Love this. Cindy, George and Julian cranking speed and driving accuracy, Gary delivering funk… then Larry doing his trademark thing, almost sounding off key. Creating space. Tripping down the stairs. You have to listen a few times, bearing in mind he is doing this on purpose, then it clicks in your brain, and you fully understand why he considered one of the great masters of jazz guitar.
It's nice to see a drummer really enjoying her work and not being too cool to express her joy .Saw Cindy at a recent drum clinic in Sydney . Very humble person and a great ambassador for the drums .Larry Coryell had impeccable time and tremendous feel with the guitar .
I saw Mr Coryell more than anyone else and my favorite was a small venue (100 people tops) back in the seventies. Solo show - he played piano, acoustic guitar and electric. I still think of that show fondly. Hats off to Julian - I imagine he had one proud papa.
Larry's playing on this session reminds of Barney Kessel: very modally inventive and gritty with an aggressive attack. Leaving space is always harder for some guitarist but Larry was a master of space and time, right? Right. Julian is a guitar god as well. And Cindy? Drum goddess of the kingdom of drums. Hats off to George too. Interesting dichotomy: a master sax player who seamlessly uses circular breathing and a master guitarist who leaves breathing space. Gary brown holds it all down with virtuoso funk and groove. And I look forward to catching Julian next time he is in the SF bay area. What a fantastic player. So sorry for his loss. What a closeness they must have had. RIP Larry Coryell.
@@EbonyPope I wonder if you know what he was going for and missed? I hear what you're hearing. but he's also making up some lines and rhythmic choices that are chunky and dirty by design.
I was listening to some Coryell and Mike Stern (for the first time EVERRR) and I could've sworn I had an eargasm - a strange phenomenon that hasn't happened before :S and I didn't think I was enjoying the music that much.
RIP LARRY! IT IS A PITY I NEVER SAW YOU LIVE ,I WAS PLANNING THIS SUMMER BUT DESTINY HAD OTHER PLANS FOR YOU.I AM GRATEFUL FOR YOUR MUSIC AND FOR ME YOU BELONG TO ONE OF THE GREATEST.ADIOS!
Larry is playing in Napa, CA on January 9, 2015. Part of a jazz trio. He said he'd be playing some Stravinsky....Tickets may still be available.....I'm going.
One of the best guitarists I'd never heard of; just read he's passed. Such genius is now gone. He could play with ANYONE & make'em sound better, IMO...
Was lucky to have seen him..my buddy from syracuse did some producing for him in his last few years..we used to get high in my buddys basement listening to Larry back in the 80s..along with Stanley, Al D, Metheny..and so on
So deng close communication between the the musicians, absolutely yaw dropping and the drummer holding it all together, pushing it to the limit. Hallelujah, this is music.
Loved Larry's solo very interesting and unique, the band appeared very enthusiastic, not the cookie cutter solos heard often, interested tone. Great composition as well by Larry, one of many by him.
It seems that jazz guitar is overlooked and underappreciated. Some think it boring, I think it's beautiful especially Tal Farlow, Mike Stern, Metheny, that type of sound. This kinda music tickles your ears and goes straight to your brain cells.
FRAMUS AR-1974....................more recent version of the vintage FRAMUS Jan Akkerman [FOCUS] model ..............cool guitar and Larry plays it well!
Man! How cool would it have been to see this live? "Kowloon Jag" is my second favorite cut (after "Woman of Truth and Future") from that Eleventh House record. (Boy does Cindy cook!)
Wow, incredible, beautiful music!!! Miss you Larry, no one plays like you and no one will ever play like you did!!!! Thanks for the killer music!!! Btw, Julian has his father's guitar skills!!!
Larry's show in Napa was wonderful. Too bad there weren't more in attendance... he dedicated the show to Wes Montgomery....played much in his style.....and a piece to Jim Hall. After the show, he stuck around and talked with everyone. Loved his Duke Ellington piece. The bassist and drummer....great! They had it working..... He is such a good person! Got an autograph, talked with him for 5-10 minutes....picture, etc. What a warm caring guy....and he's still got it!
I was reading while listening then heard the drummer. I thought Cobham was on but discovered it to be CINDY BLACKMAN SANTANA. OH YEAH! will be looking for her work
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this fantastic performance. I was lucky enough to have been there that evening, and it was Fusion at it's finest. Yoshi's is a great room, and this combo blew the roof off. I hope to see Larry's son Julian come back to these parts soon, his solos were as amazing as his dad's.
Siempre Larry Coryell me sorprende, aún después de haberlo escuchado. Cuenta historias distintas con los mismos acordes. Gracias por este regalo, Flavio.
Somewhere in the early Seventies a girlfriend of mine knocked at my door and walked in with a guy who had a guitar case in his hands. She had met him somewhere in our town Vlissingen in the Netherlands, She had told him that I can play the guitar as well, and so she took him to my house... I did not even recognized him at that moment. He told us, he was playing in a band and that evening he had a gig in " De Piek " a place where I and all the other local hippies used to hang out. Many world famous bands used to play there over the years. The man she took to my house was Larry Coryell !! I couldn't believe my eyes and ears when he told me his name.. OMG there in my house was Larry Coryell !! We played together for one hour or so, because he had to go back to his Hotel. But when he was leaving he invited us to come to the gig. Cool fact is, I remember him answering my question, that he never let someone play on his guitar, just before a gig... because I asked him if I could play something on his guitar. There were no cell phones back then in the Seventies so I have no pictures....Only, when he left he forgot his pick in my house.... and I still have it.
wilbroo Excellent sweet story... Heard nice things always about Larry, saw him several times with high energy coolness, bridging the gap between rock and jazz, i guess that's why they coined the word fusion when people saw the 11th house.
cool. like, where fusion w/ LC RIP) and everyone, meets rock fusion meets jazz w/ LC ( to me ) 'leading the way!' But, every bit, is so beautiful, so complete, intense, it swings 'with fire!!'
I hate the fact I was never able to see Larry in concert. This seems to be completely insane due to the fact I’ve actively go to tons of show even having to fly to them.
Ha! I live outside of Chicago area and he was backing up frank Zappa. On the way there we got a flat and by the time we got there he was playing his last note and walking off the stage. Never had the oppertunity again.
Julian Coryell. When you have a dad like Larry, there's no way your not gonna be awesome. I wish my kids were as serious about guitar as I am. Family fusion is the best kind of Jazz.
Saw Larry & Cindy play over 20 yrs ago at a theater in Putney VT. She's only gotten better (& even more beautiful, if that's possible) with age. I don't recall who the bassist was on that date (Patitucci?), but Stanley Cowell was the pianist...
Larry Coryell is second to none.
He was also a very nice man.
Cindy’s playing makes many grown men drummers cry.
Not cry... stand and salute.
The late, great Larry Coryell. Your music lives on, brother.
When’d he die ? I moved to Cali 2014...been to both San Fran Yoshl’s and Oakland’s . Did I JUST miss him?
Love this. Cindy, George and Julian cranking speed and driving accuracy, Gary delivering funk… then Larry doing his trademark thing, almost sounding off key. Creating space. Tripping down the stairs. totally agree, had the same experience, people sometimes don't understand Larry
Jazz allows 'offkeyness', 😂, but, more seriously, 'offtimeness' is much more tricky to master.
SO very underrated my dear tour friend, I miss you every day. Larry "You got friends in Columbus!" Larry taught me to "just go for it" on solos
It's nice to see a drummer really enjoying her work and not being too cool to express her joy .Saw Cindy at a recent drum clinic in Sydney . Very humble person and a great ambassador for the drums .Larry Coryell had impeccable time and tremendous feel with the guitar .
Cindy is always relentless
But he plays really sloppy here.
The future Mrs. Santana.
The drums are really driving this piece
@@EbonyPopeI disagree
R.I.P. Larry Coryell - you WILL be missed! What a great track to remember him by!
RIP Mr. Coryell. You did inspiered a lot of people on the music path.

What a great musicians! And Cindy blackman.....man what a woman! She is Spot on!

the band is really delivering the goods here!! Great performance

I saw him live with his Eleventh House group in the mid 70's in the Washington DC area and he and the group were sensational!
RIP! LARRY
😎
Much tears, you taught me to free up, let the spirit take over, play for the Creators, bless your artful soul, love you Larry!
RIP great guitarist. RIP Larry.
Saw him Live Larry Coryell And the Eleventh House. At Jazz Workshop in Boston back in 70s
I met the Man in Dublin last year. RIP Legend.
Larry is playing in Napa, CA on January 9, 2015. Part of a jazz trio. He said he'd be playing some Stravinsky....Tickets may still be available.....I'm going.
Larry ALWAYS went for it..loved this cat....this is so damn good here. RIP my man...missed you are
the man can jam and for his age that shit aight easy I luv him and his son so much.
One of the best guitarists I'd never heard of; just read he's passed. Such genius is now gone. He could play with ANYONE & make'em sound better, IMO...
He truly was an unbelievable guitar player, and I quite honestly a musical visionary. The guy is The Godfather of jazz fusion.
Cindy Blackman is incredible!
Whole band is.
Great vid.
Seeing Larry in October, and really looking forward to it.
Cindy Blackwoman would be more appropriate 🤣

fantastic! larry is my guitar hero then and always, so i glad to have talk to him briefly and shake his hand lol

Love the way Larry and George play!
Unreal.
It seems that jazz guitar is overlooked and underappreciated. Some think it boring, I think it's beautiful especially Tal Farlow, Mike Stern, Metheny, that type of sound. This kinda music tickles your ears and goes straight to your brain cells.
Larry Coryell always sounded like he missed notes. He did not play with sustain either. His tone was old school.
And it doesn't go through your heart. Jazz and trombone, trumpet, sax, piano - ok. But as you mentioned: jazz and guitar is boring.
wow....could you play guitar better than him?
Saw Mr. Coryell several time, a true master musician, great shows.
Larry's guitar is a seriously sweet looking instrument. Wow.
Man, this is good. Such intensity and 'only the right notes'. Amazing.
amazing, all of them
so good
Love Larry...have so many of his albums...wonderful to see this!
great drummer...

Sadly....our brilliant guitarist passed away in NYC after a show. He was only 73...and had such a caring nature about him. RIP Larry....we love you.
FRiggin' great groove! "Kowloon Jag" stands the test of time! :)
A fantastic quintet with stellar musicians - wonderful.
STUNNING PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!
One word only: WOW! Okay, again: WOW!
Bless them all. They are fabulous. RIP Larry

Was there for both great shows. Amazing all players. Hoping the DVD comes around soon.

gREAT job !!! larry and friends..!!!
The sheer power and musicality of those drums and the flow of the bass under the solos. Amazing.
WoW, just love finding these gems on UA-cam. 🤩

U2WB did she play with Lenny kravitz too? (I think I recognize her with pharaoh sanders aswell?)
Wow. Wow. Wow. All musicians where exceptionally great! Thank you!
The drummer is wonderful!
Such intensity 💚It's magical ⭐
Everyone gave a dynamic performance 💥
Much respect
So happy I made that show in Oakland. RIP Larry... That gig was AWESOME! Wish to see more footage if it's out there!
RIP Larry - thanks for leaving Julian (and Murali) here with us.
Outstanding performance, looks like Larry passed the genes to his son.
Rest in Peace Larry. We'll miss you.

Fantastic!
