Larry Coryell was an innovator and guitar genius. He always played with the best musicians. His early albums, incredible music. Offerings is still one of my favorite. The sax player incredible.
I used to go and hear Larry and his group at Slugs in the East Village in New York. They played this tune often there. Got to talk with Larry and Mike Mandel and found them to be genuine human beings that were anxious to talk music with even us mere mortals. Great guys, great band, great venue, great memories.
Ditto. Got to see Larry & Foreplay several times at Slugs, with Mike Mandel on keys, Steve Marcus on saxophone, Melvin Bronson on Fender Bass and Harry Wilkinson on drums. Was privileged to become friends with Larry and Mike over the decades, and to be along for Larry's journey at numerous stops along the way, including his final engagement at Iriidum in NYC in 2017. Larry was always pushing the envelope, may he rest in peace and power.
Larry Coryell - guitar. Steve Marcus - saxophone. Mike Mandel - piano. Mervin Bronson - bass. Roy Haynes - drums. Lawrence Killian - conga. Harry Wilkinson - percussion.
This is simply my favourite Coryell record he just kills it! But “Call to a Higher Consciousness”. Is his best! One of the Clearest Expressions of his devotion to seek the next level. He was unacknowledged for his brilliance and talent but listen to his ability and that it speaks for itself.
RIP Larry Coryell... Jazz Fusión Pioneer, Sentimental Açcoustic Poet, Hard Rock and Blues Player ... Brillant Arranger & Composer.... Did repair a Broken Life and gave Hope to other people .... Mixed Up different Styles .... Higher conciousness here and Now.
I bought this album when I was in university. I played it constantly. Call to a Higher Consciousness is musical genius. The barefoot boy was truly one of the greats. I miss him already.
I remember getting lost in this track, like it was an acid trip. It still blows my mind. The whole band just moves like a single body. Everybody is so good.
Likewise....this and a lot of weed helped get me through my freshman year at UW-Madison '71-72. Unfortunately, my alcoholic roommate at Ogg Hall was a Nixon supporter and didn't appreciate my music, political leanings or cannabis, so we had to avoid each other except while sleeping. In retrospect, I should have found a more compatible roommate instead of putting up with so much BS.
missing the godfather of Fusion, your music has captivated the intimate listeners of jazz..and influenced a multitude of artists..rest in peace fusion overlord
Album reviews often ignore or barely acknowledge this track, referring to it as a psychedelic jam of some sort. I always thought this was one of his best tracks.
His best song ever. Pure brilliance! I bought the album from a used record store for a dollar in 1980, Imagine my shock, it became one of my favorites of all time! It's comparable to Mingus and Mile's greatest achievements in my view.
Nice to see people appreciating this brilliant album. Simply inspired playing by all involved. I’m still loving it almost 50 years after first hearing it.👏
Please be advised that there is no Guitar Player that is better. Have several of his records and listened to an acoustic one yesterday. Glad I was here when he passed our way. He did a song called Sex and made that point musically. Thank you for the post.
In my opinion Coryell never made better fusion (and he was never closer to jazz as here) album and his band from that time is amazing, especially sax player Marcus. Sad thing is that this splendid album ranks in category of overlooked jewels at the time of release : such was also the case with Jack Johnson album from Miles Davis and Folk Singer album from Muddy Waters. Jack Johnson was later preferred as the best from Bitches Brew period even from Miles. Folk Singer was fully acoustic album and was praised with 20 years of delay. It seems that some genial works need long period to be appreciated as such. Regards from Slovenia! Vladimir Trop
Vers les onze heures (23 h), c'est ça? tous les soirs de lundi à vendredi, c'était 1970-71 si je me rappelle bien… les temps mythiques… r.e.p. Larry Coryell

The BIG 3, A Love Supreme - The Creator has a Master Plan. and Call to a Higher Consciousness. Transcend your mind.
Still have this on vinyl. Perhaps one of the best fusion albums of all times and Larry's best work!
Larry Coryell, a genius God gave to us to make music during the Vietnam War days, so we could see what was really real, Thanks Mr. Coryell.
