  • It started with Gio Reyna's lack of playing time at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It ended with Gregg Berhalter admitting to a 31-year-old incident of domestic violence and an implication of blackmail. How did we get from there to here? Here's an explainer.

    A perfect microcosm of soccer in the US. Parents overstepping their bounds, using their influence on the coach and administrators to get their kid more play time. The kid, having been notified of reduced play time has a complete melt down because he's used to having his way paved for him, aided by his parents. This stuff is played out across the nation at every pay to play club in America.

      Except Gio is a very good player and a successful professional. It's bad enough when parents do this with 13 year old but this is really unbelievable. When I heard a rumor the Reyna's were involved I thought that was impossible then it comes out to be true. Ugh. Those people are an embarrassment.

      Gio is easily a top 3 player on the team and berhalter is a bad coach. He had a losing record in the mls and only got the job because his brother was the COO of us soccer federation. Berhalter is an idiot for telling gio that he would have a "very limited role" before the tournament started. Gio has the potential to be the most talented player the us has ever produced up to now and berhalter needs to go not gio

    • @zkeletonz001
      @zkeletonz001 Рік тому +3

      Berhalter's connections with the Reyna's was one of the reasons he got the job in the first place. The lack of playing time wasn't what caused things to get ugly though. It was when Berhalter decided to talk publicly about stuff that should have stayed private. That was the catalyst for this to all get nasty. Yes, Gio behaved badly and even he admitted that and apologized. I haven't seen one person defending Gio's behavior. But I haven't seen Berhalter admit that he was wrong for putting stuff out there in public that he shouldn't have.

    • @I_am_kayjay
      @I_am_kayjay Рік тому +1

      @zkeletonz001 Coaches put stuff out in public all the time to be fair. For Berhalter to actually do it tho would have meant Gio's attitude and demeanor in the past was a point of concern amongst management and was kept private. The mother bringing up a serious incident decades ago to act as leverage was classless and an absolute disgrace

    • @zkeletonz001
      @zkeletonz001 Рік тому +1

      @@I_am_kayjayNo, coaches don't put stuff out in the public 'all the time.' Especially when talking about important players that you don't want to alienate. Berhalter has also made a big deal about keeping stuff in the locker room and having the team handle it. He even said that after Gio apologized his attitude was better and everything was good, so there was no reason to put it out there.
      Have you read Gio's mom's full statement? Yes she shouldn't have put it out there. But it wasn't a case of her 'reporting' on Berhalter. She was talking to someone at US Soccer that she personally knows and brought it up as a reason why she thought it was so bad that Berhalter was throwing Gio under the buss when he had made some pretty major screw ups when he was around Gio's age. Remember, we're talking about a lot of people whose whole families personally know each other here so it's not your typical professional sports situation either. This was a friend they trusted with their kid and he went and trashed him in public for no good reason.

    Berhalter can make any decision he wants as coach. If he didn’t think Reyna was ready physically or mentally, then he was right to leave him out. Second guessing him makes no sense. Woe to the next coach if Berhalter is replaced. A lot of unnecessary damage has been done.

    Claudio Reyna (as GM) releases" coach's son Sebastian Berhalter from Austin FC, and essentially ends his career. Then months later, coach Gregg Berhalter inexplicitly doesn't play Gio Reyna in the WC when the team needed offense. During a live broadcast, former player Landon Donovan implores coach to play Gio. WHAT happens? The US team ends up with the fewest goals of all teams that made the Round of 16. After the team's exit, coach then goes to the media to complain about the one striker he refused to play that should have gotten more play time. Multiple motives here, and none of them benefit US Soccer.

    Berhalter was the one who admited the specific action publically. Gios mom couldve gone to the press but didnt. Her statement was to 1 person and she makes a fair point, everyone bashing her and Gio need to learn to think for themselves. Berhalter has always been incompetent and only got the job because his brother was the COO of us soccer. The nepotism network in USSF is now dragging gio in order to mkae berhalter look better. Its sad to see so many people take the bait and blindly hate the most talented player we have produced while supporting the USSF that has made us soccer perpetually mediocre. The whole Federation needs to burn down so we can actually become a proper football (soccer) nation
