Why did he even mention this? What’s his goal here, to get ahead of anything Gio might say about him ?
GGG has to protect his own ego, so he'll happily throw players under the bus.
I think he's trying his best to get another contract coaching with USA national team.
Because he’s been absolutely dragged for not playing Reyna
@@yoinksp8972 if that was his objective, he should not have even mentioned it. All he got from his speech at the Leadership council was that he was a poor leader
He didn't mention him by name us soccer did
Should of left this in house. Gregg needs to go no matter who it’s about
Agreed.
To a degree I agree but it’s human nature to want to keep ur job. Gregg needed to put out an explanation

@@hankshepherd2310 true but Reyna is a young player who's very well regarded. It amazes me that Greg thought people would take his side

I just don't want Berhalter to be the coach. Can we move on? and no more mls coaches please
yes, 100%
Straight up
No Berhalter made the right call. Entitled Reyna should have not pouted. It's his age nonetheless Reyna will hopefully learn from this. Berhalter is not the future, but he did his job and we should move on.

Bellingham is 19...look how he behaves. Reyna isn't good enough to act like a diva.
I’m not buying that the whole team was against gio, I think Greg is still lying like when he said gio was hurt
If he is we'll hear about it.
But you also clearly haven't realized that if Berhalter was lying it was probably to cover this.
And I'm not sure sure o nthwt anyway since Reyna didn't look at all like himself when he palyed.
Only the mls guys who wants Gregg back lol
Who cares it’s prolly the mls guys who are jealous of gio
No Gregg wouldn’t lie about that because he knows the team could come out and say he’s lying. I think the team was against it because he wasn’t trying
The whole team being against Reyna is the spin Berhalter wants to put on it. That it was a team decision. I doubt that is the truth. Reyna can have a personality issue as we have seen that in the past, but we have never heard of this type of thing happening at Dortmund. Does Reyna have a lack of respect for GGG?
Possibly.
Can we also talk about how Gregg Berhalter did Pepi Ricardo wrong. He should have been on the roster because he helped the USA qualify to go to the World Cup
@Lul Shield ggg sucks reyna starts for the second best team in germany i really think there is something in the past between gregg and claudio if he was not putting in enough effort then why select him look geo dose it on the field and thats what counts ggg played him in the wrong position all along ggg is like my high school basketball ball coach who knew nothing about basketball but was are coach even though he was a college baseball player make sense of that

Why does Stevie love GGG so much? Every time he says its not ggg fault, its someone else
Stevie is wrong. Gregg is terrible at talent selection, tactics, and molding the two together. Why we are in a 4-3-3 of all formations absolutely evades me.
Your job as manager is to get your XI best players on the field. It’s not that hard… make it work!
We don’t have a true #9, so why Force one? Play Gio as the 10 in a diamond midfield and let Christian and Tim play how they play best, cutting in from the wing.
Gio knows he is one of, if not THE best player in the pool. Gregg leaving him out is a worthy reason to be pissed, especially if he is fully healthy. I’d be slacking too if I knew I wasn’t in the plans despite being a major talent and earlier lynchpin in the starting XI only to have an MLS simpleton with no tactical variety sit me on the biggest stage in the world.
Gio has shown his abilities constantly in national team caps. He had been injured, but apparently was completely healthy. So what is the stick up Gregg’s @$$?
It doesn't matter how good the player is you cant let him scape all punishment especially if it is disrupting the team. You can tell it was even bigger than yall think because the WHOLE TEAM was ready to let him leave. I get that people don't like Berhalter, i don't like him either but just because you don't like a coach doesn't mean u look past everything. Reyna has had these attitude problems for awhile now and was rightfully punished for that
Who is he better than in the starting lineup? He is not head and shoulders better than anyone. Pulisic? No. Weah. No. McKennie? No. Adams? No. Musah? Maybe but two different types of players so its based on strategy. Do you want more offense and a player that does not press/defend or another central midfielder that will do everything and work hard. Gio as a false 9 is not what the team plays and would likely lead to Gio getting upset for lack of service and poor passes from his teammates. The team does not need to bend over backwards to accommodate this kid.
Berhalter brought it up to help save his job. Everyone’s talking about why Gio didn’t play and coming after his job, so I see it as Berhalter trying to deflect and explain something away to get the best off him.
He doesn't need this to "help save his job." The management of US Soccer is well aware of the situation. This was a way of letting everyone else know why the prima donna didn't play when every talking head in front of a camera was screaming for Gio. Now we know and multiple reports are coming out indicating that Gio had lost the locker room and that he was developing problems at Dortmund as well. Gio is a spoiled 20 year old that has been given a world of opportunity just because of who his dad is and what positions his dad has held (i.e. NYCFC director).

He hit the nail on the head when talking about Managing. There's more to it.
I would be hesitant to place all the blame on Gio until hearing his side of things. I know from personal experience coaches here in the U.S. sometimes can have their biases and like to flex their power over certain individuals. I went through something similiar where a coach just didn't like me and favored politics and personal bias over performance and merit. At that point you see what's going on and lash out and than of course the coach is going to protect himself.
This! 👏
Yes thank you. That was all I needed to hear.
I think this could be similar to the John Brooks situation. I thought that if the guys really wanted him on the team, he’d be on the team. There’s a power dynamic on that team of a group of players, which could also explain the sudden inclusion of their longtime childhood teammate Haji Wright instead of Pefok or Pepi. Gregg still has to go, but if the “leadership council” has a part in all the bs going on, they’re all gonna have to work on it rather than just kicking players out.
I equate leaving John Brooks home, to leaving Donovan home a couple of World Cups ago. Been following the team for over 30 years. The two worst blunders ever! John Brooks is the best defender they have EVER had. Period!
@@eddieluvski4499 I disagree a little bit only because we saw the John Brooks thing from coming from miles away so it was massively downplayed, very different news waves compared to Donovan

Gio is gonna say he was trying his hardest and Berhalter was against him. Berhalter will say dude wasn’t trying. None of the other players will corroborate either side so in the end who loses is the USMNT not getting one of their best players on the pitch for whatever reason.
I don't believe it. Greg told him straight up before the tournament he wasn't gonna play. Which is wild.
Boy Greg sure can not handle anything. Incredible way to handle it. Essentially dividing your team before a major tournament. Not taking the initiative himself to correct the issue and take the heat for it if it came to it. Man is saying these things so he can deflect from how bad he can manage players and the game. This is supposed to stay in the locker room. And he broke the number 1 rule.
Exactly. And Gregg can save all of us that "Oh, this discussion was suppose to be off the record" nonsense! He knew exactly what he was doing.
Not to mention that this will ruin reyna’s life. His family will be under scrutiny and for what? They did not do anything and I do not think that Gio Reyna is a bad person either. If I was a USA Coach, I would just put him in and play him in the field because I know he has potential and I know that he will want to be able to show it to his team.
Reyna is the best player with Pulisic in this US team. He was always a nice guy at Dortmund, cant imagine he caused trouble or something. Think was a personal issue from Berhalter.

The cycle is over! I do not want to hear from Gregg any longer. His story has changed 3 times now. There's no history of Gio acting out. If he was acting out maybe it's because he wasn't being played. I truly think it bothers him that most of these players are at a higher level than he ever reached. These players don't respect Gregg.
I agree we don’t need Gregg in anymore but just because you’re not playing doesn’t give you the right to act petty and not put in effort, and why would you be surprised you’re not playing if you’re acting like that
What's the evidence of the players not respecting Berhalter? actual question.
The squad turned against Reyna...
@@75dobs during qualifying (after the Honduras match) I think lol. The result was horrible. Gregg was still starting guys like Llget and Zardes a lot. They realize he's hindering them.
@@saucemandan7961 first of all this hasn't been corroborated by anyone. Gregg had a couple different stories as to why Gio didn't play at first. Gio clarified he was healthy via Twitter and I'm sure that pissed Gregg off. Gregg got drilled in the media over sitting Gio. Now he's saying this, but not naming a player. Finally if he's benched due to behavior why is he being used as a tactical sub? His excuse was he didn't want the media attention, but he was already getting attention for not playing him. Yep, the MMA midfield proved to be a success while Gio was injured and the WC is not the time to experiment with what is working. Same with Weah on the left and Pulisic on the right.
It’s 100% on Reyna, you could see the lack of effort off ball vs Netherlands and then there’s a clip of him pouting around while the team celebrated qualifying to the round of 16.

Well, if Gio doesn't want to be a sub (maybe Greg wanted him as a supersub). In one of the previous videos I wrote that Pulisic can't have even a shade of some power struggle now, he needs to be the only leader of the team
A coach who was afraid to attack?? Tell me you didn’t watch the games without telling me.
I agree w/ Stevie. Responsibility is to team.
Gio doesn’t really change anything for us in this World Cup but if he learns then he could be so important in 2026
The fact the Berhalter is changing the story again is hella fishy. Idk what’s true, but the real fact is that the USMNT should look for a foreign coach who knows how to win/handle situations in the locker room, and Reyna should in the starting 11. Period
Gregg said Gio was injured to prevent the real story (of him slow walking a training match and getting lit up by his teamates) from coming out. Still very bad for Gregg to reference the situation publicly, with some flimsy veneer of anonymity.
why foreign? maybe we should look for some foreign players that know how to win? we are not a soccer country, but yet everyone gets disappointed when we lose. like face it, we not beating the Netherlands. they are the 8th ranked country in the world. we are not that level
You could also argue that Berhalter DID win the situation in the locker room. He managed a successful world cup for the USMNT DESPITE their star player causing unnecessary drama. Gio needs to grow up.
Jesse Marsch should be our next coach
Klinsmann set us back almost a decade. Bringing in foreign coaches and players is what leads to problems. This team has barely played with one another. A bunch of key players were not even classified as Americans until the last year or two so they have no experience growing up and playing with the other players. They play in Europe so at times its hard to get them to play for friendlies. I think we did really good for how young this team is and how little they have played with one another. As far as a starting 11 who do you bench? Do you play Reyna instead of Musah so you have a player with a bad attitude that won't press or track back and defend? Playing Pulisic, Weah, and Reyna who do not defend is going to lead to problems. Even if Reyna is in form and doing his best just for team balance I don't think you go with him unless he plays as a false 9 but Berhalter prefers a 9 so with everyone healthy Reyna's only spot is centrally as an attacking midfielder. No way he is good enough that he deserves a guaranteed start and for the reasons I already went over it makes perfect sense to start Musah.
Berhalter is not qualified to coach USMNT. Clearly. Gio knows this. His attitude reflected how the rest of the team felt. Gregg was hired by the corrupt USSF to promote trash MLS. Gio stood up to that. Thank you Gio.
Ale is here ignoring how corrupt the USSF is. Ignoring what a horrible coach Gregg is.
Wasn’t Berhalter telling him to tell the press he was injured…when he wasn’t?
Probably for this reason. Look, if our most talented player hasn't grown up, then he needs to grow up. Plain and simple. A new coach is definitely needed to get a fresh start with this young talent, but it isn't going to happen. MLS quotas on the USMNT is a big priority and Berhalter was very faithful at doing it, so, believe me, he will do another 4 years. Enjoy.
Greg was covering for him. He didn't want all this to get out that he has a shitty attitude. Greg was protecting him by lying.
@@roaches23 You're probably right. There is also Reyna's side of the story. Do we know what that is? What if Reyna was not cool with having to play with MLS players that can't play at this level? That is a possibility too.

If Berhalter can’t get along then he’s got to go (he has to go anyway because he’s just not good). The players that are going to give the us the best chance of competing with other nations are going to stay and Reyna is one of those players. This is not AYSO good attitudes are great, but talent is more important. It's about the manager to "manage" that situation.
Playing a player that is causing division would not give us the best chance to win. And he did manage the situation. He put the team first and they played like a team. Good world cup for the USMNT. Proud of them. Onus is on Gio to not make this mistake again.
@@LtDangle911 We failed. USSF didn't tell GB the bar was quarterfinals (2002) when it should have been. And now because the bar was so low we're stuck with another 4 years of GB? We're hosed.
@4:30 Stevie, Stevie, Stevie,...You REALLY want to get Gio's side of this on record? Lololo...
No, you really don't.
I don’t like berhalter and want him out. but if what’s being reported is true and not only berhalter but multiple senior members of the SQUAD (his peers) had an issue, then berhalter is right in this situation. Reyna need to look in the mirror talented player but this is a wake up call
Take it with an extreme grain of salt, because there are members of that squad who don’t have the larger perspective and feel Greg does a good job when he doesn’t. If Gio was a distraction it is because Greg made him a distraction by lying about him being injured.
I agree tbh.
There were also rumors that the European based players weren’t happy with his game management. I think a lot of stuff happened behind the scenes. Berhalter needs to be gone.
Who were the players who came out and said he was doing great for the team. Only one side did and that was from mls
@@nFWAYGo if that's the case then that's all you need to know right there
"To protect himself. " ie, berhalter put himself above the team
The goal of all Coaches around the world to raise the trophy, except the US coach his goal was just to get to the round of 16th, Gregg Berhalter failed, his grade is F. He should go.
By that logic every coach that doesn’t win the trophy failed and had a miserable WC
@@guillermoalvarez9400 I think you missed understanding me, I said the goal, the hope of every coaches to try to raise the trophy, us coach didn’t have this hope from the beginning!
@@amanalfykhaleel while I agree that about Gregg, I don’t think every other country thinks winning the cup is realistic. Every coach hopes to win, but realistically a lot of countries are happy just to get to round of 16, maybe some just happy for quarters or semi, and some are just happy to get points vs a top team, like Saudi vs Argentina
Years as a pro with dortmund and zero problems… coach seems like he took it personally
I hate that coaches have this much power over players at the international level.
It is in the job description. The coach manages the team - who plays and who doesn't.
Lol who’s picking the team then ? Do the team pick the team ? How deluded are you ?
Gio > Gregg
What was the groups vote to have gb as coach?
I read gio had to get up and apologize to everyone like he was a little kid.
I’m not sure if gio is a problem or not. I’d like to hear it from others… gb is clearly incapable of dealing with off the field issues. Never mind that fact he can’t figure out on the field things. 🙄
When he came on in the last game , you could see he was maybe a bit off it speed & conditioning wise. But he was the best at driving the Ball forward and most importantly his final ball was far better than, all other forwards
Even if this is true, Gregg looks like a coward trying to cya after the fact. Maybe his brother has enough influence to get him a contract again, I sure hope not. I’ll still go to watch the USMNT next time they are in town, and I will happily boo when they announce Gregg’s name.
Keep Reyna fire nepotism hire Berhalter, Gio the future, GGG is the mediocre past.
Bring back klinsman
Where is the full story?
Should of been starting it showed when he came on vs the Netherlands
It seems to me that there's more to the story here. I don't know Reyna personally, but if his attitude was such an issue why have there been no issues at Dortmund? His teammates at Dortmund seem to love him. It doesn't add up, but I'll tell you what... Berhalter seems to often have rifts that are created with players... Brooks and Hoppe come to mind. Are we sure that it's Gio and not Berhalter that's the problem here?
hoppe liked something criticizing berhalter i think
There have been issues at Dortmund. Just saying...
I don't think Gregg and Hoppe really had a rift. Hoppe was mad about coming out, Gregg told him to sit down and the player that replaced Hoppe, set up the winning goal. Hoppe still started the next match in the Gold Cup final. It's not Gregg's fault Hoppe and Brooks have barely played for their clubs in the last year.
Spot on. Haaland even nicknamed him the “American Dream”. But this issues keep happening with our better players. They probably questioning his tactics or more like the lack of it. N GGG looking for a way to gaslight the player
With respect to Brooks; Brooks was giving away too many easy goals on one-on-ones to keep around for much longer. It started as far back as the two matches against Costa Rica and Mexico under Klinsmann then got worse.
We need another foreign coach like Klinsmann who knows what we need to do in order to beat the best. There simply are no American coaches currently available who are good enough to take this team to that next step
Did Klinsmann do better than Berhalter?
100%. US Soccer will continue to suck unless they do something different. Reyna is just a scapegoat for Berhalter not living up to expectations. It's BS and alot of CYA
@@LtDangle911 I'd argue that he did in a way as he brought in a lot of fresh blood and talent. Was he prefect, no. But he was what the US needed at the time to shake things up.
thats nonsense.
there are currently no American coaches good enough to coach American players. come on man. Netherlands were ranked number 8 in the world. You coulda brought in both Pep and Mourinho and we still losing 3-1. you can't turn water into wine. we are a young and promising team. but when it comes with competing against the top class countries, we are still a level below. thats just the facts.
This is hard to watch. Stevie is barely senile here. He doesn’t even remember Gio’s name.
So Gregg wanted him out of camp because attitude or whatever reason but then lost his principles just enough to play him 27 min in pool play? Why not take a stand and not play him and explain up front why? The "13-12 vote" to keep him in camp sounds made up as well but nobody would know results if done blindly except Gregg. So let's quote the max number against Gio but allows him to stay in camp. Could have been Gregg and 2 others but you'll never know. This screams of protecting himself but coming off worse especially when no other managers have similar experience with Reyna.
so true
Gregg did more talking than work
he did more running pre game than work
Moreno is spot on with his take
USA coach is a small time coach. That’s facts
The guy reading the transcript of berhalter’s press release is not good at reading
I guarantee you ggg didnt think comments he made to CHARTER (haha) at a conference or whatever it was was gonna come out like this
Then he’s too dumb to manage
How does GGG have anything to do with this? Didn’t he just have his 3rd fight Canelo?
i dont believe berhalter . Not one coach has ever complained about Gios behavior
do your research, there have been many reports of Gio Reyna having an attitude problem
@@iswag9748 More articles stating Beerholder is a poor coach/manager and only got his job due to nepotism
@@porddaed just cuz he is a bad manager doesn’t mean u let Reyna off the hook for having a poor attitude
Brooks, Hoppe and now Gio wow... 🤔
Steffen, Pepi as well. And he was calling up Arriola forever then chose Morris
They as a group spoke with this person.
Yes he has to apologize to the whole team for his Lack of effort
I find it hard that Reyna acted like that because he wouldn't be playing and starting for Dortmund. Greg has shown he isnt trustworthy multiple times and shown he is outmatched as a coach.
Different situation. He feels entitled with the national team but not at Dortmund.
I mean I’m not saying Gregg is telling the truth, but auba was a known player who acted out and was dortmunds start man for a couple years
This seems like a tough situation because they both are probably right. Gio thinking he should be playing as the team has trouble creating and Berhalter likely not happy w/his work rate. The pressing was effective but we did not look like scoring much at all throughout
It may not even be work rate, I've heard rumors about powerpoints and memorization in GGG's system. It came up with why Joe Scally was getting passed up in WCQ, which btw Scally played against quarter finalists (maybe semi) Morocco in our 3-0 win. Perhaps he should have seen the field not to mention more than Moore.
@Killdu MLS favoritism from Greg, Scally is better than Moore in literally every way possible. Defending, Attacking, Talent, Experience at high level, etc etc
@@johnny622 I know that. Heck Gregg probably knows that. But Scally and Gio, who are good friends btw, aren't one oglf GGG's "guys". So they're benched.
What does this achieve other than alienating a kid who's only 20 years old?
But.. why was Gio not starting to begin with?
Still sounds like a coach who puts himself above the team. A good coach would have solved the situation appropriately. My guess is Berhalter did not trust Gio and told him he was not going to play, Gio being a kid probably decided not to put in a full effort. It seems that Gio was more professional than Berkhalter. Berky wanted to protect his job and put US soccer federation in a corner. they hired him so they would look weak if he was in the wrong.
What is ale talking about
If you want to win, you do what's needed to win.
Berhalter mismanaged the situation in Qatar and now he is playing CYA as he is trying to negotiate a new contract with USSF
not a good look for Beerholder to show your dirty laundry in public. Clearly demonstrates poor leadership considering he said this during a leadership council
What a way to handle a 20 year old kid. Instead of forcing him to apologize and humiliating him in front of the team mates, this could have been handled so much better. Seems like Gregg has turned Gio's team mates against him. I keep hearing how Claudio Reyna and Gregg Berhalter are best friends - so how hard can it be to put an arm around Gio and explain a few things?

I'll take Gio over the coach anytime.
over Beerholder at least
USANT should elevate the manager who guided the u20 team the the world cup semi-finals(or something like that). They were really a different force when compared to the team that went to the world cup.
They're assuming this statement is true. Maybe they should attempt to confirm it with a second source.
imagine being a coach and airing out a player like this. can’t wait until gregg gets sacked
I don’t blame him for putting this out. Everyone was attacking him making up stories and lies about the situation. After the first game you had people coming out saying Gregg told him to lie about an injury. Seemed like everyone believed that 100% until they came out and said it wasn’t true.
I'd like to hear Gio's opinion
Entitlement, nepotism, lack of desire and passion perhaps?
It was dumb and naive of Berhalter to think he could talk about this at a summit and it wouldn't get leaked to the public.
Don’t believe Berhalter. He is a liar. It’s so classless for a coach to talk bad about one of his players in public. This WOKE coach must be gone.
