Omg Jim, you just burst my bubble!! Since I started woodturning, I have become a hopeless wood hoarder and scavenger, thinking that I'd eventually grow out of it. When my firewood was delivered this year, I found a beautiful piece of Curly Maple on top of the pile. This resulted in my needing to put my hands on every single piece from the 4 cord pile. I ended up finding about a dozen pieces that I look at every single day, wondering what I can do with them. You've saved the day, yet again, I hope whatever I make comes out half as beautiful as this!!

I do the same with every piece of wood I see lol.
I drive down the highway or back roads and look at all the trees , can spot a burl at 100 yds . After seeing some of the results my wife is doing the same " look honey, how would that finish out "
I keep a high vis. vest and a hard hat in my truck, so when I stop on the side of the road to pick up logs, nobody questions me.
So beautiful. I think I say “Ok, this one is my favorite” just about every week!!

You mention that it’s hard to turn so far off the rest quite often in your videos, have you looked at Robust’s bowl rests? I use them and they make a heck of a difference. Nice colors this week.

Jim, I'm running out of words to describe you pieces and your ability. Simply stunning comes to mind with this one. As you mentioned, the beauty of the inside would have been lost if you stayed with the hollow form plan.
One of the things that I think separates you as a master turner is you ability to change direction in mid-stride when you see the opportunity to improve the overall look or design. Well done!

I don’t have a wood stove or fireplace but I’m sure if I ever get one I’m going to be looking through it for character pieces. We moved during Covid & I was in hospital so all my collected wood for crafting was lost 😩. At least I can live vicariously through UA-cam

Just getting to this video this week. Your maple analysis is dead on for all that I've seen down here in Northeast Tn as well. Granted, I haven't seen nearly as much maple as I have Oak and Pine, but for what we have seen over the years, it has held true. I have to say I love how the Designer Epoxy grey turned out there. The mother of pearl always surprised me on how it stands out from almost everything, instead of just blending in, probably shouldn't at this point, but I always love it!

I did the same with my firewood last spring. I found a beautiful piece of spalted maple and gave it to my son to turn for handles for his snake hooks. Great way to find some gorgeous wood.
