    The fact you take running speed into consideration when ranking your races makes this video stand out.
    Persinally, since this is for Anniversary, I would take Survival Mode into consideration as well.

      Yeah that's a good idea, admittedly this is the one area of the game I have limited experience with, I've only tried it on AE a couple of times. I might do an updated guide in the future with this included😁

      @@mike-thegamingdad Great video, but I have to agree with Leto85 about Survival Mode. The Nords, Elves, Orcs, and Khajiit all gain racial bonuses that help counteract either cold, fatigue, hunger, or a combination of all three. Khajiit and Argonians are also capable of eating raw meat without risking disease, but the Argonians get slammed with a 25% weakness to cold. Taking all of this into account, I imagine the Orcs would move into the top spot on your list. :)

    • @mike-thegamingdad
      @mike-thegamingdad  Рік тому +1

      @Homer Tipton Hey there, you would be correct about the Orc 😁. When I began my survival mode let's play, I did a quick update at the start of the video and re-ranked the races based on survival mode, and the Orc moved up to 1st. Bretons stayed 2nd due to their utility. I'm trying to remember the other changes. I definitely moved the Nords up, and the Wood Elves. High elves moved down. I may have kept the Argonians somewhere in the middle as that weakness to cold is a serious problem when needing to go up to Winterhold or The Throat of the World.

      @@mike-thegamingdad Thanks for telling me about the updated ranking in your Let's Play series. I just watched that episode and agree with most of your changes - Orcs are definitely the most hardy race now! I would've ranked the Argonians lower than all three Elf races, but I understand having a soft spot for a particular race. For me it's the Dark Elves... nostalgia for Morrowind, I guess. 😊

      @Homer Tipton no problem at all and thanks for watching it 😃. Yeah there's a few obvious choices like the orc but then a lot of it can be subjective can't it. The DE power is actually great for keeping warm, it's just a shame it's not unique, as in you can just become a mage and use the flame cloak spell over and you. Would be cool if it was better in someway

    Voice of the Emperor is actually a much stronger, not weaker, version of the Pacify-spell since it works on humanoid targets up to level 99 without needing all of the illusion perks. It has 2 major upsides: 1) It can fix some broken NPC behavior to (sometimes) fix some quests and 2) It can let you get a melee sneak attack off on an enemy that is already in combat with you (if they are alone or other enemies are not looking after being pacified). The passive ability is so utterly useless (it often doesn't work at all), though, that I still rank imperials second to last.

    Thank you for this. When I first played Skyrim in January 2021, I knew nothing about the Elder Scrolls games or its VAST history. I was a complete newbie. I played as a High Elf because I wanted to be a mage. Since then, I've been marinated in ES lore and played 7 of the 10 races. I still haven't played as a Khajiit, Argonian or Orc. I think of them as beast races. As one who loves role playing, I see the special abilities as a survival mechanism. An ability that lets you exceed the norm for a limited time. And I'm totally okay with it being once a day, since in reality we crash after an adrenaline rush. As the Dragonborn, we're getting stronger, so racial survival traits would become less useful as you become a god.
    I think I'll try the Khajiit. I love cats ^_^

      @mike-thegamingdad  Рік тому +2

      Glad you are enjoying it! Yeah they are immense games, incredible amounts of detail goes into the worlds. My very first race I played was an Argonian lol. I think I picked them because their ability Histskin sounded quite OP and it saved me a few times!

  • @davidnoel9355
    @davidnoel9355 Рік тому +43

    I played a Breton on my second playthrough and fell in love with their versatility. Now I have a hard time playing anything else. I think I'll try the unarmed Khajit next, or maybe I'll fall back on a Breton but mix it up by playing a necromancer.

    • @mike-thegamingdad
      @mike-thegamingdad  Рік тому +8

      Nice yeah I know what you mean, they are noticably stronger I feel having played all the races, that 25% base resistance is such a head start for any type. Thats cool about giving the unarmed build a go! With this style I recommend committing to it if you do, what I mean is unarmed doesn't scale in the same way as other weapons (it can be improved by using items like Gloves of the Pugilist but you can't put perk points into it etc) so if you end up levelling up lots of other skills as well, your overall level will eventually overtake the unarmed usefulness. It works best I've found if you try and keep your overall level lower and don't 'jack of all trades' the character 😁

    • @michaelmcclelland9876
      @michaelmcclelland9876 Рік тому +2

      They're not NEARLY as OP as they were in Oblivion (ES4)... Their advantages are nearly pointless in Skyrim.
      1. Reaching the 85% magic resistance cap EASY with enchanting + perks.
      2. Spell absorb reaches 100% with any race, if you choose.
      Imperials have a stronger boost Restoration, Destruction, Enchanting, and Heavy Armor, plus a generally MORE USEFUL once-a-day power that has no replacement later in the game (insta-cast, mass Calm spells simply don't exist).

    • @davidnoel9355
      @davidnoel9355 Рік тому +3

      @@michaelmcclelland9876 If you want to invest a little time in the alchemy/enchanting loop (and I am not even talking insane levels, just a dozen times) you can make all of the racial bonuses pointless. The orc racial ability? Who cares when you have weapons doing 500+ points per attack and armor levels over 2000? Etc. Etc. Etc. NONE of them are impressive even a little if you want to play games just using even the LEGAL exploits in Skyrim. The point is, if you just want to play around with a new character, which ones are going to be the most useful in the beginning? I still like the Breton. If we are talking a fully developed high-level character? Then none of them matter. And yes there is a mass calm spell called Harmony. It is not as effective as Voice of the Emperor but it exists and I don't usually care about calming large groups of people anyway you get more experience from killing them.

    • @michaelmcclelland9876
      @michaelmcclelland9876 Рік тому +2

      @@davidnoel9355 That's a fair point. Arbitrarily deciding which exploits are "legal" vs insanely broken glitches is a grey area (as with most Bethesda games). And yes, these usefulness ratings are heavily geared towards beginning of the game players (hence Khajiits being #3 with their pathetic claw damage that is QUICKLY outclassed).

    • @mike-thegamingdad
      @mike-thegamingdad  Рік тому +1

      @@michaelmcclelland9876 I've never been a huge fan of the resto loop trick. I'm going to throw it into a future video as a way of speed levelling a few skills but otherwise I try and avoid it as it breaks the mechanics so much that the roleplay element is lost which is what I usually go for. Its cool that you have found a lot of value in the imperials Voice of the Emperor power though! Thats the beauty of this game, everyone has their preferred races and playstyles and everyones tier list will be different. I've tried to love this power but unless I've wanted to get away or only enter a location to grab a chest item and keep the enemies calm I've ended up not using it nearly as much as I thought I would (I prefer combat and eventually will need to deal with them anyway etc) 😄

    @JeffStationFive Рік тому +7

    I agree with all of this minus the Khajiit. While claws help in the early game, they also prevent you from levelling the offensive skills you will need to survive in the mid game. Unless you are committed to playing an unarmed build, they are outclassed by every other race in terms of starting benefits. Fantastic video though!

    • @mike-thegamingdad
      @mike-thegamingdad  Рік тому

      Yeah thats fair 👍🏻 it's definitely a 'once you've made this choice, you need to stick at it'. I probably should have specified more the need to keep your overall player level low with the khaajit, whereas naturally you'd expect to level more anywhere else. I did an updated survival mode version of this at the start of episode 1 of my survival mode let's play. I think khaajit moved down a place, although it would have been more had they not had warmth bonuses and the ability to eat raw meat and not suffer food poisoning

    • @Nr4747
      @Nr4747 10 місяців тому

      It really depens on how highly you value enabling a different playstyle. I personally rank Khajiit 3rd lowest, ahead only of the Wood Elves and Imperials - and that's with taking uniquely enabling unarmed combat into account - it's just not a mechanically supported playstyle because it lacks a skill tree, perks and weapon enchants (minus Fists of Steel). Still cool and enough to get ahead of a weak hodgepodge of almost nothing (Woodelves) and a useless passive + very niche ability (Imperials), imho.

  • @Nr4747
    @Nr4747 10 місяців тому +9

    Small correction about the redguards: You can't actually fully spam power attacks with vegetable soup (trust me, I play on legendary difficulty and consume this soup a lot), but you can with Adrenaline Rush, so there is still a DPS and stagger increase when using that ability, you also can't afford to put points into stamina on legendary difficulty or you'll be a one-hit kill from full health for many tougher enemies, making redguards a decent-ish option, imho.

    Hands down the best for Mages is a High Elf just because of the 50 extra starting mana is huge, that's about 5 extra seconds of a novice spells or two extra apprentice spells with the apprentice perk taken in destruction and Mages need all the help they can get and for a Warrior or even an Archer is an Orc, Berserker rage is insane for Warriors and amazing for Archers, that 100% increase in physical damage and 50% damage reduction is so helpful. But even still it doesn't necessarily mean you need to play these races with these class types as when you get far enough into the game those bonuses will be less impactful, but oh boy early, on are those really fucking helpful.

    Voice of the emperor can be useful. One good use of this is when you piss off an important PNJ and need to talk to him. It's the equivalent to a really powerful calm spell without any investments.

    Orcs are far and away the best for any physical damage build (unless you're dual weilding/power attacking all the time and prefer redguard). For example, you want a stealth boi? Orc. Double your stealth damage. 15x dagger stealth damage not good enouth? 30x with the shrouded gloves still not enough? How about 60x then? It's ridiculous how much damage the orcs get. Never not a good ability. Definitely the strongest for melee or bow builds, but not necissary. Just really damn good for the dps. Not even to mention the defense
    Bretons are probably my second place because absorbing 50% magic damage is also never not good. So many magic users, so many dragons. Combine it with the standing stone of the same effect and you're pretty much immune to dragon breath, very nice. (Resistance caps at 80%, but absorbtion DOES go up to 100%)
    Those, I think, are the two strongest and most useful races for almost every build. Probably better choices for specific builds, but they're pretty good generally. Use whatever you want tho, most of the racial abilities can be made obselete with a standing stone, couple of levels, or an enchantment or shout

    Khajiit at 3 is wild. Unarmed is definitely very cool, but it’s also the weakest build in the game (at least beyond the early game), and their night eye actually makes things harder to see. I’d put them last because they functionally have no advantage whatsoever outside of tavern brawls. If this were an unarmed ranking though they’d obviously be top tier.
    But you did put Bretons and Orcs highest, so I’ll forgive you~

      Haha yeah there are a few obvious choices for best, but there's a lot of subjectivity for the middle bandings. I had a lot of fun playing as a khaajit, and I'd been pre warned to try keep my overall player level low to keep the game from advancing, so maybe I enjoyed it more than if I'd not done. There was something ridiculous about an enormous cat performing wrestling throws on entire camps of bandits 😅.
      I did a 2nd ranking at the start of my survival mode let's play episode 1. Just re-ranking this initial list and I think I moved khaajit down a bit. It would have been more but the warmth and raw meat factor kept them a little higher.

    Khajiit, Nord, High Elf, Orc, and Breton are my go to races for Skyrim. I don’t bother with the other races honestly. In fact, I don’t think that I’ve ever played or beaten any bit of the game as a Wood Elf, Red Guard, or Imperial.
    Mainly because Wood Elf and Red Guard are very arbitrary and niche races only loosely featured in the game. Imperial has a prominent role in sake of the civil war, but once you either pick a side and end the war or settle an agreement between the two factions with the grey beards, then they basically become almost an after thought.
    And I did play test and try some builds with the dark elf, but the novelty wore off pretty fast.
    I never bothered at all with the Argonians, but with what you demonstrated with them, I just might.

    Bretons used to be better then every other race in older TES games, simply because they take 50% less magic damage from all sources and elements, while races like dunmer & nords only took half as much from a single element. What i don't understand is why they removed High Elven magic weakness that was there from the beginning. They basically gave High Elves more magika pool, gave them infinite magika for 60 seconds and took away their 25% magic weakness, making them the best race to play as a mage, particularly early to mid game as later you can still get infinite magika on any race you want, making their racial ability worthless late game.

      I do the same, shouts make up for the Nords lack of magic.
      I can justify Redguard or imperial also being dragon born.
      Orc to me is just an adventurer character. I can get along with him being a companion/werewolf.
      I roleplay to only using major skills (starting stats of 25) I can fill in all perks in that skill tree, for minor skills (starting stats of 20) I can only take one path through the tree.
      I also think about what faction suits which race and stick to that. So I have different characters for different playthroughs.
      E.g argonian has lockpick as major skill, I can have all lockpick perks. 😂
      He also has alteration as a minor skill. If I get magic resistance perk I cannot then pick up adept alteration perk as the branch ended but I can have all 3 for 30% magic resistance.
      Gians fist (+10 unarmed damage) has been a god send as he’s a unarmed thief that wears light armour.
      He won’t become dragon born, he joined the thieves guild and looked for stones of barenzia.
      On master difficulty it’s been a tough playthrough, being seen = death.
      Means I never have OP characters and they all feel and play very different.
      My dark elf will never be as proficient in illusion as my high elf, but my high elf doesn’t have the destruction ability/versatility of my dark elf.
      Perks like the critical strike for swords in one handed skill actually make a difference for a non smithing character like imperial.
      For enchanting I picked the elemental boosts on weapons and armour (left branch)
      my orc went with enchanted skill boosts and health, magicka and stamina boosts.(middle branch) as he could smith his weapons and armour.
      My Redguard was my most powerful archer by far as khajiit and woodelf use alchemy over smithing. Combined with 10x stamina regen he was a beast combat archer abusing steady hand (slow time 50%).
      Also meant a stealth archer character (woodelf) had to be more strategic and use poisons cleverly, I didn’t have the huge 3x stealth archery bonus as my weapons remained unsmithed.

    Has anyone ever had the thought about how unbalanced the skills are even without racial powers? Stealth archers are powerful yet races have low starting skills for that build. Orcs are op and high elves start with the highest skills in diffrent categories of magic. Redguard are the most balanced yet there as weak as everybody else. Argonian's do less unarmed damage then khajit's yet more than human races. If they could spray poison out of there mouth and poison on there claws, they would have an edge. The human races from nords, bretons, imperials and alike have nothing special going on. Nords have battle cry which does nothing but have enemies run away. Battle cry causes fear which there is a perk that increases damage to enemies with fear but have to be on fire to do so as far as I know they do not stack with racial powers. Orcs are strong but the power doesn't last long. Wood elf's should of had a instinct kill ability for animals to make it easier to hunt especially on ledgendary difficulty. I created a Jack Sparrow pirate build. Imagine a pirate that could use magic? What spells would be best suited for them and gear? A scimitar, flesh spells, light armor, using traps and the environment around you. Running away from enemies when it's to risky, setting up traps. Enemies chase you to high ground and you jump to low ground. It actually is quite fun playing a pirate on ledgendary difficulty and is effective. Juts make sure to do all the quest related to boats, seas and such alike.

    For the most part, pretty much the same rankings I've seen among most of the other lists. I'd like to give s bunch of tips as well.
    1) you think little of Redguards because you said having high stamina in general makes their power bad. Upping stamina with level ups is a complete waste since you sacrifice survivability with less health, you have vegetable soup and absorb stamina for unlimited power attacks, a cheap house in whiterun to store stuff. And for mobility, whirlwind sprint and become ethereal shouts. Or just pick a taller race since they have a higher movement speed. Their placement is fine. They're just probably worse than you expected. Definitely the worst human race.
    2) For Imperials and Nords their power will remain useful as long as you avoid the illusion skilltree like the plague. You'd need a minimum of 5 perk points to copy the Imperial power
    •novice illusion
    •bottom left one to multiply the level by 2.2
    •the one up the middle to increase the level magnitude for calm spells
    •the 2 on the right to effect animals and then people at higher levels
    5 perk points that could be spent elsewhere. For the nords it's just one more up the middle since you need the calm perk to get to fear. And attacking enemies doesn't break the affect of other calmed enemies as long as you don't fuss with them.
    3) As a Nord main, I strongly recommend combining deathbell and salt pile. Salt pile is common everywhere and deathbell is common in the morthal swamplands. This will make a slowdown poison that cripples them by 50% of their movement. You'd be able to keep up with that mage in that clip no problem and hack him down as he can't even defend himself. Battlecry a great power if you want to take down a strong enemy while the others won't bother you.
    4) Like the Nords, I strongly recommend a specific potion for Argonians. Garlic and juniper berries. This will make a health regeneration potion that stacks multiply instead of just adding. So for example a 50% health regeneration potion will give you 15 times better regen instead of 10 times. The power is insane and definitely makes argonians top tier I think.
    5) clothing pieces with fortify magicka is easily exploitable. Once you're out of magicka, unequip and reequip the magicka piece which will refund the magicka back. Since your magicka will never drop below 0, you'll be taking advantage of what's essentially infinite magicka. Futhermore, another thing you can do on top of this is charge up a spell without casting it, unequip and reequip the magicka piece, then do the same for the charged spell. This will refund the magicka it took to cast the spell on top of the magicka you get from the magicka piece. For example you have a ring with 50 magicka. You charge up a spell for 45 magicka and exploit both the magicka piece and the spell. This will give you 95 magicka almost instantly. Maybe then exploit a spell that costs 90 magicka to add onto the original 95 total to cast the more expensive spells. This can also be used for stamina but not for health. Since it requires you to have low health, you'd be in killmove territory. It sounds complicated but when you understand it like I have, it becomes habit. Leveling up magicka is a waste, and the magicka regeneration the high elves have is useless to me. The only thing they have going for them is their 8% movement speed from their height. Otherwise I think they're a pointless race.
    6) Khajiit are just terrible. This isn't even groundbreaking news for most players. Unarmed builds are inferrior to weapon builds in every way other than the very beginning. Unarmed can't compete with their reach, enchantments, smithing and temporary potion upgrades.Even in brawls, it's still just better to abuse the argonians histskin to carry you through the fight. Nighteye is replicated with a simple brightness adjustment and they get a 5% movement speed weakness if they play a female. If you're playing the super unoptimal unarmed build then go ahead, but at that point you clearly aren't playing for a min/maxer so there's no appeal to the Khajiit.
    7) I just find it ironic you called out orcs because you thought they were one trick ponies but have bretons ranked number 1.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment! To be honest I had my reservations about the Khajiit unarmed build, its one I sat on for ages and then gave it a go and it surprised me how much I enjoyed it. I expected to be left behind as I levelled and eventually it just become impossible to play (as the game got progressively harder as it levelled with me), but as I'd stuck to it I wasn't adding any levels into combat, and I wasn't using any form of magic either. I pretty much was only levelling armour, smithing, enchanting and to a lesser extent speech, alchemy etc. As my overall level stayed low, it was relevant pretty much all the way through my playthrough.
      I did ponder whether to rank the high elves lower based on the magicka regen becoming useless if you exploit it, I chose not to do it when I played as a pure mage only as I didn't want to enchant to reduce magicka cost reduction. It felt like it didn't sit with the play style I was going for, but I wasn't aware of the unequip re-equip trick I'll check that out!
      I think on both points though this is the beauty of Skyrim, there's so many ways to play it, some more 'optimised' than others yes, but everyone will have their own tier list. It's always interesting to hear other peoples views on them!
      On the crafting points, I don't think I've used the Garlic/Juniper Berries and Deathbell/Salt potions so thank you will take a look at those! Crafting is one of the areas I need to delve deeper into, I tend to have my usual 10-15 potions that I stick to. I'm just finishing off a build guide to post probably tomorrow and I was going to put a few recommended potions into it for that build so would be interested to see if I've missed anything

      @@mike-thegamingdad If you have any river bettys, you could mix that with deathbell instead of salt pile and it will add a damage health along with the slow. They are pretty inconvenient to come across though.

    Adrenalin rush is worthless simply because u can make cabbage/vegetable stew and recover stamina for 740 seconds not 60 like red guards do. Power attacks and blocks only needs 1 point of stamina to be used. So despite Adrenalin Rush recovering more stamina, its still worthless, as in the end it comes down to, would you like 12 minutes of infinite stamina or 1 minute of infinite stamina?
    The Elder Scrolls 6 Had better fix the worthless racial abilities and not Nerf the good racial abilities as they did in Skyrim. If we can take anything away from STARFAIL is that the next elder scrolls wont even be 1/100ths as good as Skyrim was, so don't even bother and wait for Wayward Realms instead, i definitely wont be paying for TES 6 as i already know its gonna suck given the amount of litteral shit we got from Bethesda in the last decade!

    Orcs are extremely underrated. Berserker Rage is the best racial power hands down, Dragon Skin after that. I just wish the Bretons weren’t so damn ugly in Skyrim; it’s the only thing that keeps me from playing as them. No matter how hard i try in the character creation, Bretons always look like absolute dorks.

    Don't use the "you can just use a potion" argument against the wood Elves if you aren't going to say it about the high Elves magic

    • @2_be_yuna126

      nah high elves racial power(and redguards and argonians) is meant to make it so you don’t have to use a potion to begin with. why use a potion when highborn is faster and free? wood elves provide poison resistance while potions remove it entirely and are pretty common loot and are cheap to buy and make yourself.
