    Very interesting unboxing, I particularly like the way you compared survival kits as you went, and not just at the end. Good job.

    I certainly understand the appeal of buying a premade kit but I prefer to make my own for lots of reasons. First off is that the requirements for survival vary from region to region. True, certain things are universal (eg fire, the need for water, etc) what you'd want for FL might be different from what you'd want in MT. Here in MT it often gets down into the upper 30's/lower 40's at night even on days when it might be 85. So I put a higher priority on shelter/warming layer than I would if I were down south or at lower elevations.
    But both of those kits look good, and either would be a good foundation to build upon.

    For Australia I would go the Esse all the way because water matters a lot. Having said that I bought a tin very similar to the Esse and filled it up with my own stuff for way cheaper.

      You can also buy the Esse tin alone if you want, and great idea.

    Glad you're back feeling better Wendell, I have one of these Solkoa kits(Seal team six). Personally IMO the Solkoa is a better kit all round . Add a good blade to it and it's golden

    Good job on this comparison and review. Anxious to see some more in depth field testing from you. I hear on the weather as well. You know I'm more east central Ohio, and it's been difficult to get out and do much lol.

    I EDC the Suma Elite that I added gear to. Suma container in right cargo pocket, pouch goes in the left cargo pocket. It’s part of my line one gear.
    Bit more portable for EDC.

      Just today I placed an order for the Pro Survival Kit - SOLKOA Survival Systems from 5col.com. I plan to put this in my EDC/Get Home Bag. Bit of a sticker shock but SOLKOA makes great kits and this is the most comprehensive kit I've seen. Look forward to your part two on these kits.

    Just addressing your remark about combining the two kits, the ESEE tin is available by itself. So after that, it's just a matter of if you want to go out and get all of the individual components. With only an $8 difference in price, would I really be getting more bang for my buck with the S3? I'd really have to look hard at everything side by side and ask, "Which one is going give me the BEST CHANCE to survive?"

  • @Skills2survive

    From someone who like to build kits and such, both are great kits like you said. Definitely have pros and cons to each.

  • @adame312
    @adame312 5 років тому +3

    I vote for the esee tin, its reflective and easier to use for flagging down aircraft etc, plus you can cook with the tin, if that s3 is aluminum or some weaker metal, it may not be good for cooking or boiling water. And the squirt is nice but very small, and nothing ti hold it in, yes the fixed blade knife is small, but its a fixed blade THAT ALSO INCLUDES A NICE SHEATH THAT CAN BE ATTACHED TO A BELT ETC. and the esee kit also included a swiss knife, you should have redundancy for everything including cutting tools, what was the secondary cutting tool for the s3? That razo blade is handy but you wont be doing anything to wood with that, that blade can snap easily and or be lost very easily. You talk about adding things ti the kit on either side, yet if you are looking at these kits with zero extras, as intended, then id have ti go with the esee kit.
    Also if you drop the black s3 at night, its much harder to spot that over a reflective metal tin that will stand out in any natural surrounding. And you can always get a nylon bag like the s3 comes with for the esee if you are going to add stuff. The striker on the esee kit may be weak, but you can also use the knife as a striker.
    For the knife, i think the fixed blade will be sturdier and can take more abuse, keep it stupid simple.
    What happens if the screws come out of the leatherman from being used? As you said you also already had a multi tool, id add that to the esee kit. Hell you have both kits, just take both and maybe use the tin for one for medical. The S3 certainly lacked heavily on te medical aspect compared to the esee kit

    Nice review though I’d personally rather beef up the ESSE with the less expensive items it lacks than the opposite. The skeletal handle of the esse knife allows it to be used as a spearhead as well.

    • @perpetualnomad4304
      @perpetualnomad4304 4 роки тому

      or you could give it a paracord wrap on the handle for extra utility as well.

  • @eqlzr2
    @eqlzr2 4 роки тому

    I just watched your opening of the ESEE kit, and commented that I was surprised there wasn't a Shelter item. I see in this Solkoa Elite kit, that is one of the first items out of the bag. That would make it my choice over the ESEE kit right away. However, I just looked up the price of the Solkoa kit, and it was around $165. I believe that, without much effort, a person could duplicate that kit for substantially less $. Many thanks.

  • @SignedSign
    @SignedSign 4 роки тому +4

    ESEE is the better option as it inkludes the expensive bits and everything in it is quality, mylar blanket, paracord etc are all cheap stuff to add to it, you can even put a mylar blanket ontop of the box and wrap the whole thing with paracord.
    ESEE has already inkluded a better firestriker as the best striker there is, is the back of a victorinox saw as it has real sharp edges to use on a firesteel

  • @kidbach

    both are cool but, i would probably go with the solkoa and put in my izula 2 purely because its a less noticeable urban friendly kit.

  • @Chiburi
    @Chiburi 5 років тому +3

    I really think that the survival tin as a concept is a tin (or pouch, whatever) that you carry on your person. It should be a miniature version of all the essential tools that you carry in your pack, and it should NOT go in your pack, which would defeat the purpose! The survival tin is what you have left when you are separated from your pack. Your whole pack is basically a survival kit, so why put your backup kit in it? So, both of these kits are great, but only the SOLKOA tin can be carried in a pocket on your person, so they shouldn't really be compared to each other.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 4 роки тому

      I agree totally and the base concept of the ESEE dates back to the LRDG in WW2, forerunner of the SAS. This container for a survival kit is well known in the UK thanks to TV programmes on SAS survival way back in the 80s, hosted by John ''Lofty'' Wiseman, ex-SAS survival instructor, and the subsequent SAS Survival Handbook. In all cases the mess tin survival kit is supposed to be carried in a pouch with a belt loop and worn on the belt in the field.

    Nice comparison video,think i like the essee better.As far as the knives that came with the kits I think an izula 2 would be excellent. I edc one and even though it's small it's very comfortable in hand.

    • @kidbach
      @kidbach 6 років тому

      izula 2 is a nice, small(it meets the legal carry size in my commie state) edc knife that can do tough tasks.

    • @joelohms2629
      @joelohms2629 6 років тому +1

      kidbach I completely agree. I made a short parachord lanyard for belt carry,it carries like a dangler and I've edc'd it for over a year.The belt clip was to narrow to fit on my Bigfoot leather brand gun belt, hence the lanyard.

    • @kidbach
      @kidbach 6 років тому

      thats another reason, totally moddable to the individual, unlike some "edc knives" at twice the price.

    • @joelohms2629
      @joelohms2629 6 років тому

      kidbach yet again I agree.I made the parachord lanyard for it, but I also piggybacked a TOPS knives Ferro rod and kydex holder onto the essee sheath.Its a great little edc knife that fits well into my carry system.I carry a lot of stuff everyday.lol

  • @dark_gravity_edc
    @dark_gravity_edc 5 років тому +2

    The Solkoa is an ass raping. You can buy those fast fire tabs cheap at Walmart. You can buy cordage at Walmart. With Solkoa you're paying $180 for string and fire. I also can't believe you're complaining about the knives. That esee knife will do a lot more than the 5 cent razor you got in the Solkoa.
    Obviously the ESEE kit blows the Solkoa kit out of the water. They're supposed to be self contained kit, not add on kits. You can always build better. The question is what you get for your money. Go do the math.

    I’m not sure why you folks who make these videos about survival kits never seem to realize the obvious thing that’s missing and that is a knife sharpener. It doesn’t really do a whole lot of good do a whole lot of good for you to have cutting implements with no way to maintain them especially when so many of these blades are made from stainless steel that loses its sharpness so easily. A credit card sized diamond sharpener would be a perfect addition to any of these kits.

      @@ThePreparedWanderer i’m sorry, I didn’t mean that as a personal criticism of your content, just that in the various years that I have been watching similar videos I have never seen anyone mention the lack of sharpening items, and it’s just my opinion that they are important consideration.

  • @dark_gravity_edc
    @dark_gravity_edc 5 років тому +1

    I'm very confused as to how you can say the Salkoa kit is better. $10 price difference but you obviously get better gear for the money from ESEE. An ESEE 3 would be a better knife, but that puts the Solkoa up to a $300 kit and the container is still comparatively useless to the ESEE. It's a lot cheaper to add a bivy, a better striker and some 550 cord to the ESEE than it is to add a knife to the Solkoa. Not to mention, since the ability to add is important, you can fit a lot more in the ESEE.
    I could keep going and actually compare item for item, but I think you get the picture. You have a responsibility to give fact based information if you're gonna put yourself out there as a "resource". The facts just don't match your statements in this video, sorry.

      Tad Watson its all a matter of opinion skill level and area that you would possibly need/use of a kit you can puck it apart all you want but what the main purpose of any review is personal opinion and without these reviews and opinions less people will know about things like these kits and the survival/prepper/bush craft movements
