I went to high school with Rocky back in 1978, you couldn't help but feel sorry for him but he actually seemed upbeat when you talked to him, most of the time.
Can we talk about Eric Stoltz? The genetically blessed person (understatement) who became Rocky Dennis. At no moment during his performance do you recall his natural appearance. A highly underrated performance by Stoltz - who off the top of my head you would only know as the heroin dealer from Pulp Fiction. Highly recommend John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful" w/Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes).
I grew up around outlaw bikers. I had a lot of uncles, and aunts that weren't blood. They used to call me Dougly do-right, and always pushed me to do good in school, and by virtue of seeing them in various stages of loaded, kept me away from drugs. It's definitely an interesting family life.
I grew up with extended family who were wrapped up in various drugs and they were the best advertisement for not doing drugs. They always watched out for me like that too but not in a condescending way, they would just point at themselves and ask me not to make these same decisions. Addicts self aware enough to protect others even if they can't save themselves.

Cher has stated in an interview that the reason she stopped making movies is because all of her early films were literally so good, that she became sort of paralyzed over the choice of what movie to do next because she always wanted to be as good as she was in Mask, Silkwood, Moonstruck, Witches of Eastwick... etc.

This movie is where I realized what a great actress Cher is. She was in a movie before this though called "Silkwood". Another movie based on real events and really good. It is not mentioned much but worth your time.
She once recounted seeing a whole theater audience laugh once her name appeared in the Silkwood trailer, since it was her first acting role and no one had any idea how good an actress she was. The director Mike Nichols advised her to just wait until they actually saw the movie, and they'd stop laughing.
According to IMDB they filmed it in Rocky's old neighborhood. While in make up a neighbor greeted Stolts in the Rocky makeup and said 'Hi, I'm so glad to see you I thought you passed'. Cher said the guy was so happy they didn't have the heart to tell him.
That is a nice story but I honestly don’t believe it. You see, Rocky in real life looked quite a bit different than Stoltzs character in make up. Anyone that knew the real Ricky would recognize this fairly quickly

The Academy made up for it the next year by nominating her for Silkwood and later for Moonstruck.
I haven't seen this film in a long time. But I'm laughing at Ashleigh's reaction to Sam Elliot, thinking to myself, "Someone get this woman some water, because she is dying of thirst!" 😂😂

Keith and Watts is such a great relationship. So many best friends are terrified of becoming lovers but when it works it's incredible! The ending of SKOW is one of the best ever. And I like when Amanda and Keith come out of the party and see Watts, and Watts says she was impressed by what Amanda did and that she admits she misjudged her - the look on Amanda's face - she doesn't have to say anything, but you know she's thinking she misjudged Watts, too. And that's the moment she realizes what's really going on and knows she's going to give the earrings back to Keith. Then the final part with Keith and Watts is amazing! "You knew you were going to get these, didn't you?" "No, I didn't know. Hoped, but didn't know."
I actually think this is the best reaction I've seen on the channel so far. This movie is super heavy. I still can't watch it without crying. Great reaction Ashleigh. Thanks for posting.
Ah, we broke Ashleigh in the most beautiful way. Big hugs. One thing that stuck with me after I saw this movie was the way he showed her colors, such a smart and creative way.
I saw the real Rusty Dennis in an interview she did an interview one year after Rocky passed. Cher did an amazing job playing her. She captured her personality and mannerisms perfectly.
The real Rusty Dennis looked a lot more like Rocky, probably really close to how a healthy Rocky would have looked. But, Cher is brilliant in the movie.
After being snubbed at the 58th Oscars in 1986 for her role in Mask, legend has it that the Academy was biased against Cher in light of her past Oscar wardrobe choices, believing that she “needed to learn how to dress like a serious actress." Cher responded by showing up to the 58th Annual Academy Awards in March of 1986 dressed in a black sequined gown with a cut-out halter, exposed midriff, and a towering feather headdress. She presented the award for Best Supporting Actor, telling the crowd, “As you can see, I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress." She won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck two years later.
I love movies like this that basically have a message of "don't coddle or condescend to people just because they have physical issues, just treat them like everyone else and let them live their lives". My Left Foot and Murderball are two other good movies with this theme, and they're both worth reacting to. Eric Stoltz played another character with a disability in the movie The Waterdance where he played a guy who gets paralyzed. Really an underrated actor.
Eric Stoltz is a nice guy too! I met him once when he came into a store I worked at. He joked with me as my (young, female, beautiful) manager hid behind a display and drooled over him. I think he knew.
That is mine and my mom's favorite movie to watch together and now that I've moved away from home it's not the same watching it by myself but very good movie
@@tryandsaycecili My mother LOVED this movie too in the 80's. It was always rented out on weekends at the video stores cause so many women enjoyed seeing it lol.
When this came out I was in high school, and my mother saw the bully scene where Rocky laughs it off. She took me to see it because I had been bullied in school....Thanks mom! I needed a good cry! Absolutely one of my favorite movies.
You reacting to this movie is what brought me to your channel. Since then, I’ve watched nearly every video you’ve posted! I love spending my mornings with you!!
"Haven't you seen someone from the planet Vulcan before?" is referencing the show Star Trek. Basically she's telling people to quit looking at Rocky like he's an alien. Swedish pop musician Jens Lekman self-published a song titled "Rocky Dennis' Farewell Song to the Blind Girl", causing DJs to mistakenly call the musician by Rocky Dennis' name.[9] Lekman clarified that the song was not about himself with the release of Rocky Dennis in Heaven, an EP containing four songs about Dennis and his film portrayal.
"One stressful situation and that's all it takes?!" Yeah that's how it goes with junkies and alcoholics unfortunately. Its really a tough monkey to get off your back.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought, "oh, yeah, she's gonna cry." Heck, I've seen the movie before & have tears on my face, even knowing what happens. Such a wonderful movie, and a real heartbreaker.
Agreed. Ashleigh watching Fried Green Tomatoes is my go to for a release of emotion. I`m going to give Ashleigh a 4 out of 5 ( the first I`ve given) because I felt a bit let down by her score of 4 out of 5 for a move that made her feel so many emotions and she so obviously enjoyed it immensely. As I waited for her to give her rating I was bouncing on the couch like a child in anticipation of the 7 out of 5 she was going to give. Denied. Now I have to hunt up another one and make another cup of tea. God bless.
Mask is such an underrated movie that people seem to have forgotten about. I was so pumped when I saw the thumbnail and realized you were reacting to this movie. I knew your heart was going to shatter at the end, but you made it through to the other side. :D
Did not have weeping like a baby on a Monday watching your reaction to this awesome movie on my to-do list...but here we are. I agree with your rating - I couldn't watch it again because it killed me the first time. It has been decades and I STILL bawled my eyes out. But it was a really good film and I thank you for reminding me of the wonderful messages: Kindness is free and when you die - you go everywhere.
Cher was great in this, and also in Silkwood. That was her first role where people saw her in a different light, meaning other than a singer. She just seems so thoroughly real as the character she plays. What a great reaction! Made my Monday.
It is an unforgettable movie. Sure it's sad but it's also inspiring and heartfelt about coping with what life throws at you. I don't understand giving a movie a lower grade only because it makes you feel sad or horrified. That means it succeeded in it's intentions. Also "action" might keep your attention but it needs more to make a movie "memorable".
@@stillfoufou because I challenge you to find the movie Silkwood anywhere. They don’t have it on streaming and as far as I know, not pressed on DVD. I never see it on cable or even regular tv. If you know where to find it please let me know because I’ve been looking for it for years. I saw it on cable when it first hit cable, but it disappeared after a while. Man, when Ashleigh said this is a feel-good movie I knew she had a long way to fall. I can't wait until she watches Terms of Endearment... And an Officer and a Gentleman and Urban Cowboy. What I think of as the Debra Winger trilogy with a bonus of Jack Nicholson.
Officer and a Gentleman was a strange movie in that of course it was marketed as a love story between Richard Gere and Debra Winger. But the most important relationship in the film is actually the one between Gere's character and the drill sergeant played by Louis Gossett Jr., whose Oscar was well deserved for such a powerful performance. Actually I think this movie really brought out the best in Gere.
I've been requesting for Ashleigh, to react to "Terms Of Endearment" for quite awhile now. Hopefully the more people, like yourself. Will convince her to finally react to it.
Before the movie ever started I said, "you're gonna cry, I know it!" I saw this when it came out and fell in love with it and Eric Stoltz' performance as Rocky. Cher, as always is amazing and of course Sam Elliott as well. Dozer was so loveable, too. The ending kills me every time when she realizes he's passed. What a tear jerker. Glad you reviewed this. One of my favorites.
It's heartwarming to see how emotionally attached you get to the film characters and vested in what's happening in their lives. Combined with your charismatic personality, this is the best movie reaction channel on UA-cam.
This movie came out my Senior year of High School and I took a girl I liked to see it…. I cried more than she did. This movie kills me, I love everything about it.😢👍
It seems to me that Cher's character was acting like a mom that knew her child would die form this disease- and not surprisingly had to drown her emotions in drugs/alcohol and men- to know the inevitable to lose your baby boy. So well acted by all! Great review!
Fun Fact: Diana, Rocky's gf also starred in Jurrasic Park as an adult. And btw...I just loved this review. This movie hits you in the feels. I remember my first time seeing it as a teenager. I was just as emotional as you were.
Diana was played by Laura Dern. Daughter of Bruce Dern and Diana Ladd. In addition to Jurassic Park & Jurassic Park III, she also played Rose in "Rambling Rose" among many other excellent roles.
This is the time when if you want to do a "Fun Fact" you actually look up with the actress' name is before you post. :) Don't wanna be a douche but there it is!
Laura Dean is in a ton of different things. Her work with David Lynch in Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks The Return is among my favorites. Also she is awesome in the HBO series Big Little Lies.
That's pretty hilarious that "Jurrasic Park" is what you think of when you think of Laura Dern. Why is that a "fun fact"? That's the most "i don't know anything about Laura Dern" fact a person could come up with. Obviously, any real movie fan knows that she is most principally associated with David Lynch ("Blue Velvet", "Wild At Heart" and "Inland Empire"), and has done a string of incredible roles ("Citizen Ruth" being particularly great; was fantastic on "Big Little Lies"), and is the daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Those are the REAL fun facts, not that she ran around in front of a green screen for dopey "Jurrasic Park", lol.
One of the few Cher movies that I actually liked. Another great movie that deals with deformities that you should check out is The Elephant Man, which is a better film to me with an amazing performance by John Hurt and also contains one of the all time great movie lines in "I'm not an animal, I'm a human being." Actually you should check out David Lynch movies in general. Yes their out there and weird and bizarre, but oh so good
Elephant Man also features pre Hannibal Anthony Hopkins as the doctor treating John Merrick and it's a great subtle performance. Tough movie to watch, though.
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I was about 14 when I saw it. This was the movie that made me a fan of Eric Stoltz, Sam Elliott, Laura Dern, and cemented my fandom of Cher. I haven't seen it in decades, but it was one of those that always stuck with me. Thanks, Ashleigh!!!
I was a camp counselor for a kid with this disorder (or something similar). It was the late 1990s, 15 years after this film, so treatments had improved. His condition was pretty well treated, though he had had a lot of surgeries and still a large growth over one of his eyes. He was the nicest kod at the whole camp and everyone loved him, fortunately. I googled his name. It is a little too common to be sure, but I think I found a picture of him, now in his young 30s. If that's him, you can't tell there's anything wrong.
I knew you were in for a cry fest. I recommended this movie a long time ago so I'm glad your patreon peeps finally pushed you that direction. For me, this is right up there with Steel Magnolias. The character development, and the reality that life, even a good life, isn't always easy and it will come, sooner or later, with heartbreak. Rocky's poem has stuck with me since I first viewed this movie back in 1986. It's simply... deep, and worthy of paying attention to. Kindness, is not always free, but it is often offered without a price. Glad you saw the value in the movie and enjoyed the story... and recognized the lessons. Mask is a Hollywood gem!
Fun fact: at the wrap party, Eric Stoltz almost wasn't let in because no one knew what he really looked like without the prosthetics. He was and still is a very good looking man. Another fun fact: he was originally cast as Marty McFly, but was replaced by Michael J. Fox because they felt that he was too serious. He agreed. There are some clips available online of him in some early BTF scenes.
Estelle Getty auditioned twice for Golden Girls, the second time she wore a wig and glasses and some old lady clothes and used an alias then she killed it and won the part. She was considerably younger than the other cast members. She was 61 in 1985 when The Golden Girls first aired.
Please watch Powder (1995) A lot of movies are called underrated but this classic is truly underrated and needs to be acknowledged more. It stars Jeff Goldblum, Lance Henriksen, Mary Steenburgen and Sean Patrick Flanery
I started crying when I saw this thumbnail. A very favorite of mine. I cried, cried laughed, mad cried all through your reaction to this. Sam Elliot could get it and can still get it. He is one fine specimen. Now I must watch this one in its entirety and cry all over again.
Thanks for doing a grownup movie. For March madness can I suggest: Memento (2000) From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) Vanishing Point (1971) The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and for Easter/Passover: The Ten Commandments (1956) (Make it a two parter) Ben-Hur (1959) (Make it a two parter) Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) The two parters are known as epics.
Fun Fact: You could actually hear every girl on earth watching this movie for the first time in 1985 collectively swoon for Rocky at that "This is beautiful" line with Diana.
I promised myself I'd never watch this movie again after the last time I saw it 30 years ago. Fantastic, but way WAY too close to home on several fronts. Yet here I am, watching you experience it for the first time and being just as emotionally affected by it as I had been then. A cathartic experience to share with you, thank you. Both Cher and Eric Stoltz were utterly robbed of at least an Oscar nomination that year.
I busted out laughing at the end when you were trying to sing "Born in the USA". I absolutely LOVED your bourbon reference, I know if Sam Elliott had his own bourbon I'd buy it without hesitation. If you ever want to sample some delicious bourbon, you let me know. 🖖😎🥃
Try Matthew McConaughey's LongBranch. Not too expensive and that stuff is goooood. Notwtihstanding Sam's recent blather (though he isn't entirely wrong that it appears to be impossible to have a simple, standard, traditional Western anymore...I mean, sure, do you if you want a bunch of gay deconstructions of movie genres but ferFS, don't prevent the other kinds at the same time!)...anyway, where was I? Oh yeah. If Sam had a bourbon, I think I'd have to try a dram, too.
What I remembered most about this movie was the fantastic way he explained colors to someone who has never seen. That was incredible and has stayed with me
This is a really good movie that I've only watched once. It's so heartrending that I've never gone back to it, but I never forgot it, either. Have a great week!
I had an uncle who has severe Cerebral Palsy. At the time he was born, people with his condition were lucky to live until 20. He lived until he was 64. He loved going on roller coasters. Many times I'd walk him through the lines. Other than taking longer to get him in and out, he was just like everybody else for those few minutes.
The kid is a pretty solid actor who went to do a lot of interesting things as a grown up. He's the drug dealer who sells the heroin to John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction" and he plays a bank robber in a Tarantinesque heist movie called "Killing Zoe" from back in the 90's. I always liked that one even if it's a bit derivative, and most people don't seem to know it even exists. He's also the lead in John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful," which is a movie Hughes made basically as a way to tell the actual story he wanted to tell after the studio made him change his preferred ending to "Pretty in Pink." He was also the original Marty McFly in "Back to the Future" before Michael J. Fox was able to work out his scheduling issues and they re-shot the movie with him when it was mostly done, which is kind of funny because his co-star in "Some Kind of Wonderful" is Leah Thompson, who plays Marty's mom in the "Back to the Future" series.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video I knew it was going to be freaking amazing and I was SO not disappointed! I LOVED it! Thank you so much for this reaction!
The line "you've never seen anyone from the planet Vulcan?" Is a reference Star Trek. That or because he was a intelligent person he could be referring to the so called believed planet "Vulcan" that was between Mercury an the Sun that was discovered back in the 19th century.
I had completely forgotten about this movie...saw it when I was younger and it tore me up then...watching bits of it along with you hit me hard all over again. It's almost criminal that this movie doesn't get talked about more.

MISS AMANDA JONES.. lol
Also John Ashton ("Taggert" from BEVERLY HILLS COP)
One of my all time favorite movies!!!!!!
"You knew you were going to get these, didn't you?"
"No, I didn't know. Hoped, but didn't know."
I actually think this is the best reaction I've seen on the channel so far. This movie is super heavy. I still can't watch it without crying. Great reaction Ashleigh. Thanks for posting.
This is one of those movies that sneaks up on you. Not much happens, but what does happen is important.
Ah, we broke Ashleigh in the most beautiful way. Big hugs.
One thing that stuck with me after I saw this movie was the way he showed her colors, such a smart and creative way.
"Is this movie gonna make me cry?"
Yep. Several times.
Ashleigh. Seeing this two years later: "Kindness ain't nothin' but free." Djeezuz! That raw pure statement came from your soul. And it hit!
Rocky's mom is a really sad story too. She died in a motorcycle crash.
Sounds like she was pretty stupid then
She also had another son who died from AIDS.

Omg Murderball!!
Eric Stoltz is a nice guy too! I met him once when he came into a store I worked at. He joked with me as my (young, female, beautiful) manager hid behind a display and drooled over him. I think he knew.
Hey was originally slotted to play Marty McFly before Michael J Fox ended up with the role.
Ashley, there is a saying. “All true stories end in death, this was a true story”
Beaches needs to be watched. Only film to ever make me cry.
Definitively needs a Beaches reaction.
Yes!
You should watch "Some Kind of Wonderful" or "Memphis Belle" to see some more of Eric Stoltz acting as he's a pretty good actor.
Isn't he also in Human Centipede 3? No, sorry, just checked that was Eric Roberts.
Also 'Killing Zoe'.
Crazy that Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly
Some kind of wonderful is so good.
@@sylvienygaard1630 And a better song.
You reacting to this movie is what brought me to your channel. Since then, I’ve watched nearly every video you’ve posted! I love spending my mornings with you!!
Mask and The Elephant Man are two films you can only watch once. Both make you cry buckets and hurt you so much .
I watched this movie as a teenager, and it affects me the same way today. Eric Stoltz, and Cher were amazing
"The sun shining on my face" is a line that will live with me forever
"One stressful situation and that's all it takes?!"
Yeah that's how it goes with junkies and alcoholics unfortunately. Its really a tough monkey to get off your back.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought, "oh, yeah, she's gonna cry." Heck, I've seen the movie before & have tears on my face, even knowing what happens. Such a wonderful movie, and a real heartbreaker.
I know it must be emotionally exhausting going through these tear-jerker films, but I think they're your best episodes. 🥰
God bless.
You should watch her reaction of “Always”
She should do a review of the song The Last Game of the Season (A Blind Man In The Bleachers) by David Geddes and maybe Rocky by Austin Roberts.
Now it's time for a funny family plot like Serial Mom.
@@howiegruwitz3173 Mr. Mom.
“Silkwood” is also a great Cher movie.
Yeah, the ending to “Mask” stays with you for awhile.
I was wondering why Silkwood doesn't come up more often as a Cher movie.
I thought maybe it was the subject of a lawsuit or the nuclear power plant people had it suppressed.
@@dreamweaver1603 whaaaaa.... that's crazy... it wouldnt be the first movie that's hard to find but that one had a lot of stars in it... I am seeing the DVD avail on Amazon but one review says it's low quality.... now I feel like re-watching it cause I was a kid when it came out and I don't remember it as well except for the one scene when someone gets contaminated and has to shower, and just feeling so scared for her.
@@stillfoufou that scene was brutal. I remember how terrified I was of nuclear power (still am to be honest). I was a kid too so I feel like I’d understand it better if I saw it now. Interesting that there is a dvd. I never found it, but admittedly I only look for it every once in a while.
Got me tearing up when Dozer talked. I have an uncle with a stutter who got me a job and rented me an apartment when I was down and out
Man, when Ashleigh said this is a feel-good movie I knew she had a long way to fall.
"Terms Of Endearment" is fantastic! Is she going to watch that? She's going to LOVE that one!
I've been requesting for Ashleigh, to react to "Terms Of Endearment" for quite awhile now. Hopefully the more people, like yourself. Will convince her to finally react to it.
Thelma and Louise
She should watch Champ.
This movie kills me, I love everything about it.😢👍
When you said it was a feel-good movie, I was like "OWWW, look out!"
The other girl, the one with the guy Rocky tutors was in Dead Poets Society.
The girl, Diane, was played by Laura Dern. She also played Ellie, Paleobotanist, in Jurassic Park.
Yes their out there and weird and bizarre, but oh so good
Elephant man is a better film. But it’s been known to cause viewers to die of a broken heart. I wonder if Ashleigh could manage to survive.
Mel Brooks' Production only serious movie, it would destroy Ashleigh.
Elephant Man also features pre Hannibal Anthony Hopkins as the doctor treating John Merrick and it's a great subtle performance. Tough movie to watch, though.
Cher also starred in "Silkwood" as Meryl Streep's best friend... I think it was her first movie...
The camp girl friend is Lauren Dern. Eric Stolz was cast as Mattie in Back to the Future, then MJF was cast
You should watch "Mermaids" with Cher and Winona Ryder. You will love it! Great reaction! Thanks for making Mondays a day to look forward to.
Oooof this is a tearjerker. One of my favorite 80s films.
Another awesome review! Laughs, tears and “Beans! I’m having a moment!” 🤣
That part made me laugh so hard!! And I was supposed to be crying 😂
You have no clue how much I love this movie and only a couple of people have made videos for it! Made my day!!!
"Im not sure about this Dozer side story"🙄
10 minutes later: "OMG Dozer is the best character ever of any movie ever!"😭
Fun fact: at the wrap party, Eric Stoltz almost wasn't let in because no one knew what he really looked like without the prosthetics. He was and still is a very good looking man.
Another fun fact: he was originally cast as Marty McFly, but was replaced by Michael J. Fox because they felt that he was too serious. He agreed. There are some clips available online of him in some early BTF scenes.
I forget which scene it was, but Stoltz made it into the final cut of _BTTF._ You can't see his face, which is why it's still in the movie.
@@toob1979 I think (not entirely sure though) that it was the scenes filmed in the mall parking lot, but don't hold me to that!
It isn't acknowledged more because it was directed by convicted pedophile Victor Salva.

This is a really good movie that I've only watched once. It's so heartrending that I've never gone back to it, but I never forgot it, either.
Have a great week!
I saw it as a kid and it stuck with me for sure, but I've never had the desire to see it again.
Fox was able to work out his scheduling issues and they re-shot the movie with him when it was mostly done, which is kind of funny because his co-star in "Some Kind of Wonderful" is Leah Thompson, who plays Marty's mom in the "Back to the Future" series.
don't forget Eric Stolz was also one of the stoner kids who hung out with Sean Penn (Jeff Spicoli) in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High lol
You also forgot he Wes Michael tha archangel in "The prophecy " and Jeff spicole buddy in "fast times in Ridgemont high";)
Mask and the original Back to the Future movie were released in the same year of 1985.

Cher is also great in the film Mermaids. Check it out if you haven't seen it 🙂
I love that the phrase you use when Rocky goes to see Diana is that she's happy to see him.
Rocky was also Lance in Pulp Fiction.

Cher, Kurt Russell, Meryl Streep and a true story!
The line "you've never seen anyone from the planet Vulcan?" Is a reference Star Trek. That or because he was a intelligent person he could be referring to the so called believed planet "Vulcan" that was between Mercury an the Sun that was discovered back in the 19th century.
Mermaids needs to be next. How can you not tell that that is Sam Elliott?! You had me cracking up the entire time. 🤣😂
Another great true story film about someone with the same disorder is "The Elephant Man" starring Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt.
