- From the video game Demon's Souls (PS3 - 2009). This theme is played when you're in 'Character Creation' mode and when you're in the 'Load Game' menu.
This theme, entitled "Souls of Mist", wasn't released on the original Demon's Souls soundtrack.
This music was composed by Shunsuke Kida. I don't claim to own anything.

Something about Demon's Souls that the other games in the series just could not replicate and I miss it. Maybe I'm just nostalgic but I always remember a certain "atmosphere" Demon's Souls had that was full of intrigue. Felt like you were exploring the shadow of a broken world.

The OG Demon’s Souls has the most unique atmosphere I’ve ever seen in a game. I could only describe it as ethereal and otherworldly. Like a dream almost.

It sounds stupid to say this because I've never played shadow of the colossus besides the demo years ago but the art direction or style reminds me of that game.

Exactly. I played the OG Demon's Souls after I cleared the Dark Souls series, and it certainly has a different atmosphere to it. Very dreamy.
I've listened to this well over 5,000 times over the past three years. I can fall asleep to this, study to this, daydream to this, etc. This is a timeless piece of menu music, and I think it's a shame that Dark Souls 3 did away with the peaceful, otherworldly music at the title and character creation menus.
True but Secret Betrayal and the Firelink theme in Dark Souls 3 are really encapsulate that feeling, in my opinion.
Dark Souls 3 wasn't the same theme, the same story. It was a tale of an ending world, of a cycle of cycles tired of turning round and round on itself, but which did not concede to go so gentle into that good night, and still raged against the dying of the light. As some Welshman would say. It demanded grandiose themes, and rightfully so.
@@MEUAR exactly it’s like in dark souls 1 where you get a huge explosion of flame at the end in the words of dj peach cobbler “you get a flickering flame one that can barely sustain itself burning at the edge of a dying world”

Just a correction: this piece is not by Shunsuke Kida, although it is obviously based on a theme -- that of the Nexus -- by Kida. It is in fact composed by Yuji Takenouchi, who also composed Dark Souls' menu music, and was both games' lead sound designer.

I wish FromSoft kept their King's Field type of music in their Souls games like they did with Demon's Souls. There's that unexplainable feeling of eerie or creepy kind of feeling I get in these tracks.
The soundtracks beyond Queelag started becoming grand, and it lasted to DS3.
So this morning I decided to plug my ps3 back in to play this after so many years. Something about the remake doesn’t quite capture everything I feel for the original game. What a masterpiece!!
I know, right? Original is so mystical and beautiful, and there will probably never be something like it again…

Dark Souls 2 really was similar to Demon Souls in a few aspects... although it's always going to be remembered as the black sheep of all the games.

It’s 4.30 in the morning, I just got back from a party and I’m listening to this under the warm sheets of my bed, completely surrounded by the welcoming darkness of my bedroom and I’m having the time of my life. Forever grateful for this game and this soundtrack that will never grow old.

Literally a minute into the song, and I made my mind up to buy back my PS3 and replay this game. So many damn memories I want to relive just from hearing this tune.

I wish one day I will feel again like those first hours in demon soul trying to get through that first level wondering why the fuck I sucked so bad. This game took my gaming habits and broke them against the wall of difficulty and thoughtfulness, making me think again, fell again, wonder again. No more cliches no more tricks, it’s all new and what the hell is going on what am I doing where should I go who are these people. Ha the bliss I felt then. Like playing a game for the first time.

Overall a great song that draws the mind in and provokes thought while balancing low and high tones that have an almost horror effect

So simplistic, yet hauntingly beautiful. This will always be my favorite character creation theme.
In music, often the pauses between notes are just as important as the notes themselves. This song makes full use of that concept.
For anyone who wants more like this, the composer is Yuji Takenouchi/TECHNOuchi/Missingsoul. His music has a very distinct tone and is very similar to this, just often with a more upbeat/dance oriented style. Look up his remix of The Black Shell Beast King, from the Mushihimesama Double Arrange album; it uses many of the same samples/instruments as this.
He was the lead sound designer for Demon's Souls, and composed this theme and the character creation theme in the original Dark Souls.

really wish I grew up on DeS. Used to love DaS like how one loves the first Souls title they play, it's great, it has plin plin plon, but DeS makes me feel things that cannot be described by anything in the english language

It's almost a year that I listen to this song everyday. No metter what troubles I have, or where I am: when I listen it, i feel a quiet, mysterious peace within myself.
I feel the same about Song of Healing from Majora's Mask.

This feels distant, like in outer space. it sounds calming as if preparing you for the rage and tears.

kind of insane how 4:50 is very similar to the mountain top of the giants in elden ring. Also the dragons in demon souls are soo interesting

When you hear that calm theme playing while creating your character, you're million miles away to expect all the brutality /blood/salt/tears this game can hold.
That theme remembers me of Akira Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill

It’s like everything about this game is eerie or terrifying in some way. The graphics may not be super great even by ps3 standards, but they really add a sense of dread to the game that no other souls game, or even it’s remake, could replicate.
Excellent study music, really gets me in the zone.
There are a lot of hidden gems in the Demon's Souls soundtrack.
I remember sometime in 2010's I've heard about demon souls. People were talking about it as if it's some old school game were you die easily and have to go truough a whole level again. I've tried it and it sucked me in straight away. It seemed that this was exactly the game I was looking for in terms of theme, atmosphere and gameplay. And look at it now it's a legend and a big brother to all the souls games, bloodborne. I haven't played demon souls since many years ago, so it's like a great nearly faded memory in my head just like this song.
This thing created my love for Dark Fantasy, best thing ever happened to me.
"Final Fantasy 9" reminds me of the Souls saga due to the whole Mist thing. Which one do you think is a more accurate representation of the world's response against a global magical catastrophe, should such exist ? Dark or Light fantasy ?

As I read through these comments it feels as if I’m sifting through a time capsule of a truly grandiose size, reading the numbers atop the comments it feels strange as I come to the same realisation as everyone else has come to too, that we are individuals living lives at different times, 9 years ago i didn’t know what a console or pc was, and now I read comments of people who had to scour for this song. Demon's souls is never dead my friend. Every souls game will never die,if fromsoft ever moves away from that franchise,we can still reminsce about the nostalgic times in gaming and we can still go back to them and enjoy as much as we first played the games. I may have never played demon's souls,but it has been drawing me to it and i just cant let it go,but i have played dark souls,and ive loved it since my first time getting into it.

Setting this on loop while reading really does it. It doesn't take away the focus from my reading, in fact, it feels as though this track enhances my focus.
Same. I really enjoyed reading the Witcher books and the metro series to this soundtrack on loop, it’s much more enjoyable to read anything with this soundtrack.
Really sets the tone for the entire game. Playing Demons souls is real experience.

In 2011 this music made me stay on the character creation screen a little longer than I admit fantastic game Demon Souls was a game that opened my eyes that difficulty could be fun
One of the most influential and impactful games that will ever be made. Dark Souls was the true refinement of what Demons Souls should have been but Demons Souls lay the groundwork for everything that came after. This game changed the industry so much and will continue to do so for decades more

My favorite game. I remember not having enough money to buy the newer games but when I played this I was like wow, how does no one play this? I felt like I was the only one who appreciated it. Everything about this game was perfect to me. I was trapped in a dark atmosphere that I never felt. But every win felt victorious especially because getting your souls back was really hard... A masterpiece
The remake removing the reverb on sound effects like dialogue and music may added clarity but it removed place; nobody feels like they are in their location when there's no echo and now there's awkward space where there used to be a filling reverb.

1:30 I imagine myself being trapped for eternity as this knight in the abandoned Italian city known as craco in an parallel universe. Its Dark and gloomy. I doesn't matter how often i try to escape, there is no way to leave this place. Many other died there. It's an mysterious place with strange creatures and other survivors.

Absolute love. The Souls series to me has always had this deep spiritual feel and this song just feels like the pure essence of Souls.

I'm glad they made the character creation music 8 minutes long, since that's how long it takes to make a character who doesn't look like a boiled mutant.

the lesser graphics quality of the original adds so much to the sad, mysterious atmosphere of this game. Remake made it too bombastic, I didn't want to feel like the hero soullessly being a badass destroying any demon in my path. Something about the original, feels like a depressed world that is beyond saving, even when you beat the game.

Demon Souls has an a very surrealistic vibe to it due to the weird lighting this game has and the fact that the models looks wet all the time. Which unfortunately the remake couldn't capture. For whatever reason.
