Step-by-step guide on how to recharge the AC system in your 2017 Chevy Silverado. If you've noticed that your AC isn't blowing as cold as it used to, or if it's not working at all, it's likely that your AC system needs a recharge. Fortunately, this is a relatively simple DIY task that you can complete in just a few hours with the right tools and materials.
Before we get started, here's a list of the tools and materials you'll need for this project:
AC recharge kit (with gauge and hose)
Safety glasses
Gloves
A/C system UV dye
UV light
Rags or towels
Now that you have everything you need, let's get started!
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
The first step is to prepare your vehicle for the AC recharge process. Park your Silverado on a flat surface and turn off the engine. Pop open the hood and locate the low-pressure AC service port. It's usually located on the passenger side near the firewall. Remove the cap from the port and set it aside.
Step 2: Attach the Recharge Hose
Next, attach the recharge hose to the low-pressure service port. Make sure that the gauge on the hose is in the "off" position before attaching it to the port. Then, attach the other end of the hose to the canister of refrigerant.
Step 3: Add Refrigerant
Now it's time to add the refrigerant to your AC system. Start the engine and turn on the AC to the maximum cool setting. Then, open the valve on the recharge hose to release the refrigerant into the system. Keep an eye on the gauge to make sure that you're adding the correct amount of refrigerant. Most AC recharge kits come with instructions on how much refrigerant to add, based on the size of your vehicle's AC system.
Step 4: Check for Leaks
After you've added the refrigerant, it's important to check for leaks in your AC system. This is where the UV dye comes in handy. Add a small amount of the dye to the AC system and run the engine for a few minutes with the AC on. Then, use the UV light to inspect the AC system for any leaks. If you spot a leak, you'll need to fix it before proceeding with the recharge process.
Step 5: Check the AC System Performance
Finally, it's time to check the performance of your AC system. Allow the engine to run for a few minutes with the AC on, and then use a thermometer to measure the air temperature coming from the vents. If the air is cold and refreshing, then you've successfully recharged your AC system! If not, you may need to repeat the recharge process or seek professional help to diagnose the issue.

The one video that shows how to do it the right and easy way. Chevy needs to send you a check thanks man
You’re welcome man - glad to help
I'm sure Chevy would like to bury info like this. Can't stay in business if people can work on their own vehicles 😂
Followed ur instructions to a T. Cooling perfectly. Thank you. Saved $140 just for a Diagnostics check. Whatever charges came afterwards. Spent $100 for a bottle and gauge. Ty
You're welcome!
Thank you young man. Yours was the only information I could find--and you were/are a major help. Cheers, gk
You're welcome
Thanks for the video brotha! This helped me out a lot. Kept me from using the wrong Freon and the wrong service port. 👏🏼👏🏼✊🏽
Glad it helped
Just did this on my 2018 high country. Only difference was the bottle type. They had a bottle and hose combo for $150. Much cheaper than the $500 I was quoted to have it repaired. Thanks a lot man. Very helpful video that saved me money! Easy subscribe
happy to help
Be sure to subscribe, I have a bunch of giveaways coming up for you guys!
Thanks for this video!! I have the same truck and mine just went out. Very helpful and your video was the first to pop up. Thanks for being straight forward and to the point. LFG!
Glad to help brother
We need more people like you! They are making newer vehciles harder and harder to DIY🤦♂️
One of me is just the right amount for now-any more, and the world might just overload on awesome!
Just did this myself. No mechanic experince at all. The way you tell is recharging is that the can gets cold. Easy and simple. Cheers and ty
Glad to help 🙏
Thanks for share your knowladge with us.
You bet!
Appreciate you makin this video brotha. Almost put r-134a in mine before I found this
Happy to help
Thank you sir for the video instruction. Hose and R-1234yf cost me $72.06 tax included
That’s awesome! Always happy to help..
Where did you purchase?
@@FAbrK8r link is in the description.
Is this the type of refrigerant I need ? I have a 2017 Silverado, R-1234yf ?
My AC is out of Freon
I bought one kit , it didn’t fit the port. I took it back to auto zone, I’m headed to Walmart. Help me please 😂
@BreezybriefswithBrooke yes, the one you bought is for older vehicles. You need the 1234YF
Thanks. Don’t know if I would have found that low pressure port without you. They put that high pressure one front and center up by the battery but the one you actually need buried in the engine. Nice having cold A/C in July again.
Glad I could help
No worries I was able to follow along thank you for this information
You're welcome
Thank you bro you are heaven sent
You're welcome
Thanks, Robert. I just followed your instructions, and it running cold 🥶 thanks!!!
Happy to help
Great information. Sitting in my truck putting in gas right now.
Right on
This helped me out a lot
same
You're welcome
Thanks for the information 👍 this helped out a lot. I dont have the owners manual and i purchased the wrong freon originally. Thanks bro.
You're welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial. Good job.
You're welcome!
thanks! this saved me $425.00 at Chevy Dealership!
Happy to help
Thanks for the post champ. I would recommend that you periodically check the gauge by opening and closing valve to get proper reading to ensure you don’t over fill. Being that you had the smaller can you probably didn’t have any issues though?
@@Robert_Cain just completed the job blowing cold now. I’m just chilling listening to music in the Silverado cool breeze. Hahaha
Glad to help! Rock on..
Thanks for the info brother
You bet
i need to do my 2018 sierra denali, i live in vancouver canada. will buy the 2 items and try it this weekend. thanks for the video.
Link is in the description, but yeah haven’t had an issue since. Over a year now… let me know how it goes
I have an 18, gonna give it a shot. Thanks
Glad to help
I can not connect to the TOP one with any of the adopters is it different ?
You don’t need too, you’ll not able to charge from that one anyways. They made the adapter to only fit the correct one so people wouldn’t have this issue.
I see that your dash says steering wheel reduced. Do you remember why it had that?
Yeah, it was a power steering assist failure. I had to replace my power steering pump. which was FUN to btw. but if you're seeing on yours it could be a simply connections to the power steering system. Things shake loose from time to time, you can just make sure everything is connected before diving into it to deep.
Thank-you for the video it will help me
You're welcome
Thank you !, I have a 2017 Chevy and was about to put in the regular stuff. But I’m headed to the parts store for the YF . Thanks🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad I could help
Just did this easy video. Thanks.
You're welcome
Thanks for confirming the low port. Why put it in a nice convenient spot like the high pressure one? Is your condenser cracked? Mine is and that's why I'm recharging. Apparently a class action law suit against GM for the issue. If you haven't checked, take a look up at the pinch welds on the condenser - should be able to see through the grill. You can see a spot on mine where there's discoloration from oil leaking. I'm recharging to bandaid this before digging in to the condenser. Thanks for the vid!
I’ve seen some guys fix that with the 1234yf w/sealer. It really just depends on the size of the crack(s).
Why does the needle jump in the red when you recharge it? Is that ok? I stopped on mine because I was worried about breaking it.
I was wondering the same thing
No need to worry, it will jump as the pressure is very high on a brand new can. After 2-3 mins it will drop way down
Great information, right on!
Thanks
I just replaced the condenser so the system is completely dry, do I need to vacuum the system and such? I know you didn't use one, but in other videos it shows them pulling the pressure out of it with the gauges and such. TRUST me I would rather do it this way, I just don't want to mess anything up! Please anyone let me know is I can simply do it this way or do I need to buy the compressor with the hoses and gauges. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! Have a wonderful day!
Yes, you absolutely want to vacuum the system. 2-3 hours should be fine but I know people that run it over night just to be sure.
You just don’t want any moisture or contamination in there. It’s really easy to miss this, 10 months later end up with a crack over corrosion that you left in there.
Ive been trying for the past 20 minutes to get the hose to put freon to connect to the bottom port and it doesn’t lock in 💢😒
Make sure you have the right 1234yf kit. The other kit doesn’t work. That’s for older vehicles and will damage it.
How did it get empty in the first please
I’m unsure! Haven’t had a problem since tho.
Do you have to climb up on the truck to reach down in there? I'm an old geezer and not very flexible.
It’s easier to reach it from behind the wheel
@@victoramaro4008
How do you reach it from behind the wheel?
Any issues with the ac condenser leaking like 1,000s of other gm trucks have in the past? Welds breaking and leak out Freon.?
LOL yeah man! Stood on the tire.
Did you struggle connecting to the charging point??
Not really, make sure you have the right kind. The other type will not fit on that lower port. If it’s giving you a hard time make sure it’s the 1234yf with the right adapter.
Thank you!
You’re welcome be sure to subscribe
While it was informative, there’s a little missing information here. Not everyone attempting will need a full can. Over charging is easily done and just as bad as no refrigerant and will result in warm air. You may of noticed when he opened the valve the needle was burried in the red. I recommend adding it slowly and shutting the valve periodically to get an accurate level reading instead of opening and let sit.
Thank you for your 2 cents.
Why did your truck lose the refrigerant? I have the same truck with 78k miles and the air just stopped getting cold.
It happens around 65k/80k just needs a recharge. Mine didn’t stop blowing cold, it was just not as cold as it used to be.
You should shake it up before and during. But cool quick video.
Appreciate the help and advice. Subscribe if you haven’t already, I’m about to do a few giveaways with my subscribers.
Is the fitting larger than the standard?
It's just a different fitting all together. It won't connect unless you use the correct one.
Thank for video
You’re welcome, be sure to subscribe I have a bunch of giveaways that I randomly give to subscribers.
But can we go back to the bike in the background. R6 or R1?😮❤
Yeah I'll make another video about the bike soon.
Freon capacity???
There’s a gauge on the adapter
Thank you very much
You’re welcome
Hi Robert was your compressor engaging before you added the refrigerant?
Max out your AC and then start to charge.
so you leave it hooked up and open on there for up to 10 mins to get fully charged? just one of those cans? i have same gauge/can set up
@@Robert_Cain mine too!! did er yesterday thank you
@@Robert_Cain mine ran ice cold, it no longer runs ice cold. should i do max dry, leak stop, then add more refrigerant
@@SevenTwo5ivesounds like your condenser is cracked. Common issue
@@LuisHernandez-gu4mt it actually ended up working! still blowing cold!
I just used one can. I put a link in the details of the video.
hows your truck holding up after recharging the ac, and where did u buy these products?
I put a link in the description of the kit I used. But I only needed one can and I haven’t refilled it since. Idk this video is over a year old
What is the exact adapter you bought for it? I’m having trouble finding the right one!
I put a link in the video details.
My 2017 Silverado feels like an oven right now I’m in the Central Valley in California having 107 degree weather with no ac and I keeps getting quotes of $500-$700 to get it fixed. I’m gonna have to get my husband to do this himself because I need cold air!
Remember those days! Hopefully a quick recharge will cool you guys down.
I'm assuming this the same step for the 2017 gmc sierra 5.3 short bed v8 6speed tranny
Sure is
Where’d you buy the adapter?
Added the link in the video details.
You are right.. not enough info out there.. 👍👌
You're welcome
Was that just a quick fix? Or did you have to take the truck in for maintenance.
It fixed my issue
Thank you
You're welcome
Gracias
You’re welcome
Yea hope u fixed the issue it’s prolly ur condenser.
Not sure, just added one can and it's been working ever since.
