I will go over how to restore macOS on your new Apple Silicon Mac. Your first line of defense for installing macOS on Apple Silicon should be macOS Recovery. But if for some reason you are having problems with that you can boot your Apple Silicon Mac with a Big Sur USB installer drive. I wrote an article covering all the changes to macOS Recovery here.

Order of that you should follow for reinstalling macOS on Apple Silicon.
1. macOS Recovery
2. System Recovery - (Will boot automatically if macOS Recovery is unavailable)
3. macOS Big Sur USB Installer Drive - (External boot for macOS Installers is enabled by default on Apple Silicon)
4. Apple Configurator 2 REVIVE option - This option will reinstall macOS Recovery (retains user data on the SSD hard drive)
5. Apple Configurator 2 RESTORE option - This option will Reinstall macOS Recovery, ERASE your SSD hard drive and reinstall macOS

Hello I have tried to use Apple Configurator 2 to solve activation lock but I did not succeed it. When I put my MacBook Pro m1 silicon into DFU mode, it shows me everything I need to do but when I tried to revive or restore, it said that this Mac cannot be restored or revived. Can you help me please?

I want to tell you THANK YOU for creating and sharing your highly informative content/tutorial. I spent half a day with 5 Apple Genius who could not resolve my issue, 3 didn't even listen and try to understand the problem, too busy reading off the script they had in front of them asking me the same question over and over again. Thanks so much! I was having issues getting into DFU mode. Had no idea the timing was so specific. Count it out to 10 seconds plus 7 after, that is key!!

This video was very useful to help us get my wife's new MacBook Air up and running when the migration from her MacBook Air 2014 failed. We ended up having to wipe the new MacBook Air and then we had problems reestablishing the MacOS on the new machine. Once we used Mr. Macintosh's connection to the latest ipsw firmware, we were able to quickly get her new MacBook Air up and running. She is now a very happy "camper".

Just did this.
To get to DFU Mode, I found I had to switch from my LG UltraFine 4K Display Thunderbolt 3 to a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 cable ( perhaps a bad cable )
Once I switch the cable, it immediately connected to DFU Mode in the Apple Configurator 2 app.
The rest went extremely smooth and was done in about 90 min.

Hi, The installation process on my MacBook starts, but when the installation is almost complete, it turns off and does not turn on. Maybe you know what to do in this situation?
Can you do a write up clarifying if you want to migrate from a usb - c MacBook to the new MacBook M1 laptops, what cable do you need and what is the process. I can imagine that there are a lot of people who are trying to migrate using usb c instead of wifi. The online guide on apple's website isn't very clear if the normal usb c charging cable will work, what ports it needs to be plugged into... It would be very helpful.

Absolutely fantastic info on this site. My wife just got a silicon M1 MacBook Air and after installing her time machine backup with the initial new computer install the WiFi would not work. Even though the network symbol showed full bars, the computer kept saying you are not connected to the internet...therefore no mail, no safari, no siri. So we decided to try an erase and restore and since it is not in Intel machine...we did not know how to proceed. Mr. Macintosh had videos and several options that we could not find on apple sites (at least not that were understandable, thorough and worked. His did and w are back working! Thanks much.

Great presentation. I'missing something. When I do a revive or a restore it goes into activation mode, possibly because the disk is encrypted, and I don't know the password. What can I do?

I keep getting "step 2 of 4 down loading documents" after I tried the down load method of the IPSW, I think it only downloaded the link, it's nowhere near the speed of yours. I am between a MacBook Pro 2012 to M1 air. The problem started when I tried to migrate the two. The new computer asked for password but would not take the one I set. So I restarted M1 and ended up here. If I cannot reboot the system how do I get the password off the new computer T2?
My Intel mac shows up in Recovery instead of DFU in AC2. When i try to revive or restore, I get an error that says "Unexpected device state 'Recovery' expected 'RestoreOS' (Probably caused by corruption or panic in the bundle's restored)
How do I fix this?
Thanks man, trick worked for Macbook Pro 2019 and yes, machine was totally bricked, no fan, no light, no sound, black screen, and DFU reset, wake it up.
Also DFU work for me, when I connected dead machine with the left 2nd (from the screen) thunderbolt port.
Reason for the condition: I tried to update to macOS Monterey , and when it stuck i forecefully restarted it. (maybe it was working, but the update bar is not moving much for around 30 minutes)

Now Apple Appstore says that Apple Configurator needs MacOS 14 or more... I have Monterey on a late 2016 touchbar 15" Macbook Pro... you made this video on an A1706... how can I get this app running on my Mac?
Your video it's just great. Really helpful. However in my Macbook Air m1 2020 it happens something I didn't see at your or any video. During initial 10 seconds to try to reach DFU mode on the Mac running Apple Configurator 2, at exactly 8 seconds (all the times I tried), it appear in a flash DFU mode and immediately appear "Connect Devices" message, and the screen becames black on problematic Mac. Eventhough, I keep counting and after 10 seconds only pressed Power button (for more 8, or 10 seconds) and nothign happens. Any other "magic" idea you may have for my case?

If someone has been infected with a BIOS/Firmware level virus, would this method be the ideal manner of removing it since it re-installs the actual Firmware? I am relatively new to MAC OS. On the Windows Side, I am used to just flashing the BIOS.

i am using the charging cable that came with the mac the usb c to usb c. Most of the reviews i have read state that a ThunderBolt 3 cable is not supported to restore a macbook
Hello Drew, you might get that message but the restore process will work just fine. I've tested a thunderbolt 3 cable and it works fine. You can switch to the USB-C white charge cable and that will work fine also.

Will MacBook Pro 2017 with downgraded Big Sur (from Monterey) be able to downgrade Mac m1 to Big Sur and also set recovery to be Big surs (and not Montereys)?

Hello Dan, yes AC2 2.13.3 was released! The IPSW file is exactly the same, at least until Apple releases Big Sur 11.1.

Hello Ifeanyi, to restore a MacOS Montery Beta IPSW you need to have the HOST mac on Monterey or you can use big sur with the latest version of Xcode Beta.

Wait, so if you have that restore icon at boot up do you have to use a second Mac? Or can you just use a Big Sur bootable installer?
Yes! You can use a Big Sur Bootable installer.
Apple has basically shot themselves in the foot here.. They should have kept internet recovery..
