    A few things are different with installing macOS Big Sur on the new 24" M1 iMac! I will go over all the things you will need to know + I will show you 3 ways to reinstall macOS Big Sur from the slowest 1. macOS Recovery (1-2 hours) 2. USB Big Sur install disk (30-45min) & Apple Configurator 2. DFU mode and a 2nd Mac with a Big Sur IPSW file (8 Minutes!!!) Let me know if you have any questions.

      So I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and I followed your steps on the 3rd way and my MacBook didn’t have dfu pop up, instead it came up with a “connect accessory to a thunderbolt port on this Mac” message

      there faster method ,, clone existing image from external hard drive

    • @mikehunt576
      @mikehunt576 2 роки тому

      so some guy advised on how to create a external drive - clone cause the internal was only 256GB, so he
      1-Formatted his target 1tb ssd external drive as masterboot.
      2-cloned his Monterey m1 system with Carbon Copy Cloner
      3-rebooted in recovery and re installed Monterey with out erasing the cloned drive.
      does this sound correct?

    Im still stuck: My iMac M1 is not responding at all to any presses of the power button. It shows up in Configurator on my M1 Macbook Air running the latest Beta and can be set in DFU. If I try to install MacOS (tried diffrent Versions of Monterey and Sonoma dowloaded from your side and the latest Version downloaded in Configurator) the iMac lights up and shows the apple logo. A loading bar appears and starts to fill up. It always crashes at about 3/4 of the bar. Ive tried diffrent cables to. Can somebody help me?

    I accidentally deleted my "Macintosh HD" file and the "reinstall macOs Monterrey" file can't locate a Macintosh HD file. Also, I can't erase the interal SSD or partition it. Would you be able to tell me how I can install a new Macintosh HD? Hope you can help.

      Great question, but the M1 does not have native boot support for windows arm yet. For now we will have to use it through applications like Parallels.

    Unfortunately the USB method resulted in an error (personalisation error). With Ventura. So waay past Big Sur when this problem occurred. Looks like it's not fixed.

      Radu, can you please walk through what you did? Maybe I can reproduce it.

      @@Mr.Macintosh It's a long story... Started as a simple driver installation (which turned out I didn't need), and ended up erasing my Mac.
      I wanted to downgrade one of the installations (had a clean installation of Ventura and an upgrade from Monterey, on two different partitions).
      So, I initially tried to downgrade one of them (the one I was using for testing, as a clean installation) to Monterey to see if I can reproduce the issue I was having in Ventura.
      But...here is probably where I messed up.
      I had the partition name as VenturaBeta or something similar. So I thought: I want to install Monterey on it (from another USB drive), and I want the partition name to reflect that. So far no problem. The problem is that I selected VenturaBeta in the initial prompt (I still don't understand how this new recovery system works, it was a lot easier on Intel Macs), and in Disk Utility, I erased VenturaBeta and renamed to Monterey. Then exit, and started the installation of Monterey, from the stick.
      Well, that didn't work well either. At some point It finished installing, first part, but after the reboot, there was no "install MacOS" in the boot picker. I did have the Monterey partition I renamed, but it was unbootable. I could select it, it would show a spinning wheel for a little bit, then go back to Continue.
      Then I think I selected Options from the boot picker, and if I remember correctly, it asked me to select a user to recover. And I kept selecting Monterey, but that wouldn't work. So then I thought: ok, let's erase the Monterey partition and start again. This time with all the names correctly set up from the beginning.
      And I think I clicked Erase Mac from this section, thinking it would bring me to the Disk Utility page where I can select WHAT I want to delete. Instead, it just deleted everything.
      So, at this point I thought: ok, let's install Ventura directly, from a USB drive. So I don't have to install Monterey first, then upgrade it (which I ended up doing anyway, cause I couldn't find another way).
      Made one with createinstallmedia command, all good. It did start the installation, but at some point it just stopped and showed that personalisation error.
      I tried that resetpassword command in Terminal, but it didn't show any user, like in your other video (the one where you show how to fix personalisation error). It did open that Reset Password window, but there was no user (probably from the Erase Mac thingy I did before).
      So...in the end, I had to reinstall Monterey (from the internet, which took a long time) and upgrade it to Ventura (which worked fine). Overall, it's not that bad. I was thinking of doing a clean install. But this erased everything, not just the operating system.
      Anyway, once in Monterey, I did manage to test that what I wanted to test in the first place (creating a PPPoE connection with a Baseus 8-in-1 USB hub). And yeah, looks like I don't need a driver. It was just a Ventura bug. In Ventura, it wouldn't save the password for the connection, and the Connect button was greyed out (inactive). But if you have that already set up from Monterey, it seems to keep it in Ventura, as well. Haven't tested to see if it also works, but...I guess it should. Right now, I'm focusing on bringing back all my apps and stuff. Maybe I'll try again later to see if it was really that, or something else I missed or messed up.
      The machine is a 2021 16" MacBook Pro with M1 Pro. It should be the same though for other M1 Macs.
      Anyway, lesson learned: don't do Erase Mac unless you want it to erase Everything! I'm still not sure why it wouldn't let me install Monterey from the stick though. It worked fine from the internet recovery. Probably because of that name change. It wanted to install on VenturaBeta, but then that was erased and renamed, and it tried to install on that... I don't have another explanation... Weird stuff nonetheless.

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  3 роки тому

      This is why I always recommend using an installer USB. All the files are on the USB and you will not have to worry about the download. The Mac should not go to sleep during an OS install unless you close the lid.

      @@Mr.Macintosh actually, I'm using a Macbook Pro, early 2013 for restoring, and since Apple Configurator 2 was not supported, I found online an older, beta version, so this was the issue (for other who might read this). Just FYI - I'm trying today to restore with a newer Mac, Big Sure - but it still asks for the newest version of Big Sur. So this info might be useful for some folks out there. THANX for the prompt reply anyways man, your videos and website are very useful!

    Unfortunately the internet recovery for M1, is lacking.
    Intel will update to the lastest OS. With M1 you have to install the OS your iMac came with and then update afterwards.
    Thats annoying, doesn't cost them anything to allow you to install the latest available OS.
