ive followed this process but the laptop doesnt seem to get past activate my mac ???? I keep getting the error the operation couldnt be completed. Activation lock status could not be determined because the activation lock server cannot be reached. Try again in a few more minutes
Oh man, you are golden, thank you so much! Finally I was able to reinstall my bricked/corrupted MacBook. I was struggling for several hours to get my MBP working and finally I found this video. Btw: only full restore helped in my case, but luckily I have TM backups.
Out of all these videos this is the best. None of them said you have to click on the pic of the DFU chip in order for the restore and other options to show. Great Vid
Mr. Macintosh, Sir your a genius! Restored a 2020 iMac here from a 2014 MacBook Pro. Having mused for a couple of days over an apparent "Bricked" iMac which looked to me as if the Computer had a "Bricked" Logic Board which on the 2020 is pretty much everything i.e. SSD etc. I was "sweating Bullets." So I scooted over to Amazon and ordered a USB-A to USB-C. In the meantime my Samsung Galaxy needed charging, just by chance I looked at the USB-C end of the charger Cable and "Lo and behold" it fit the USB-C port at the back of the iMac. Downloaded the Apple Configurator and went through the iMac process and "et voila" DFU mode first time. I wondered in the Video clip as to your apparent exuberance at getting the procedure to work, well I was the same here. Many, Many thanks again for your superb helpful advice, Videos and Channel!!!! 😁😄😃😀 PS now off over to Amazon to cancel the Cable before they ship it!
TY bro. i wiped my SSD on my mac mini 2018. bc i was goign to sell it tonight. i started the process and when i got home i found the OS never finished. I have been trying to reinstall Big sur on it since 9pm and it's now 1:35 am. I think it is finally installing. I just hope it doesn't fail at 10 or 8 mins remaining like before!

I had watched other videos and they didn’t say that you could: 1) Use the USB C charging cable on both macs, 2) Plug the first USB cable to the left nearest port on both macs and then plug in the second cable into the left farther charging port so the main(working) Mac can also charge. My MBP had infinite reboots. After lengthy struggles, I was able to find the apple guide on revive/restore Mac. However, it described incorrectly (too short for 3 sec) and I was hopeless after many trials. This video shows exactly what to do to get to DFU mode. Thanks a lot!!! My Mac is getting back where it was.
Had difficulty booting into dfu mode on my 2018 MacBook Pro when using the instructions from Apple. using the instructions on this video, I was able to boot into dfu mode on the first try. Thank you very much for posting this video as well as giving us written instructions on your website.
Really hope this solves my problem. My macbook pro 16 just didnt turn on one morning. No fan spin, no charging chime, no lights, nothing. I have automatic updates on so it could possibly be a failed update. The last os reported on icloud is 10.15.6.
@@Mr.Macintosh Unfortunately it didn’t work. Couldnt get the mac into DFU mode at all. I guess its dead and unrecoverable. Outside the US and there are no apple stores here. Third party technician cannot fix it either. This mac is barely 2 months old, extremely disappointed.
I have a bricked 2019 macbook pro that will not even boot to the apple logo. No response on power button at all. Unfortunately this does not work. It's not a power supply issue. Hi! great video. My MBP 2018 has an issue with Touch ID enrolment. I am pretty sure it is not a hardware issue. It says unable to complete Touch ID enrolment. I have tried many online solutions including pram and sec reset but nothing worked. Someone had a similar problem and they said reloading the T2 firmware fixed their problem as during updates, sometimes the T2 chip can corrupt the connection between Touch ID and logic board. Do you think I should give this a try? Is reviving the same as reloading T2 firmware?

Hello Emilio, your best bet is to make sure that you are using a USB keyboard. Sometimes wireless keyboards can cause problems when you are trying to issue startup commands. As far as the DFU BridgeOS install, if you attempt this just make sure that you choose the REVIVE option ONLY. This will just reinstall bridgeOS but NOT erase your data. You could also boot your iMac into TDM target disk mode and get all the data for backup if needed. (this is if that works or not since you only have a black screen) Let me know how it works!
I tried with revive mode, the update appeared on the screen, but when I restart the screen is still black. i tried the destination function (t) but it doesn't work; disk utilities either. the last time I used it I shut down the system properly and the next day it stayed on white screen. I turned it off and on again and now it starts up with black screen. keyboard commands don't seem to respond..

Having had a bit of a look it seems as though I need to do this via the terminal in -bash-3.2#.... Do you have any ideas on how to set up a new admin so I can unlock the SSD and boot from a USB? I have tried every site, all videos, but cannot get a customers Macbook Pro 2019 A2141 Intel i9 into DFU mode, was updating it to MacOS Ventura and it got stuck at the startup disk option. Now cannot get it out of that and every video that I see, it simply goes into the DFU mode. THe only difference is that Apple only has Apple Configurator to download, can't find Configurator 2 anywhere. The version that is downloaded says it is Version 2.15.1 and it also says (right on the main page when you open up the app) that Apple Configurator support iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV, no mention of MacOS. I've tried USB-C to USB-C, used Thunderbolt C-C, made sure I have Target and Host OS as Monterey but no luck!!!

They told me that this lock can be removed with Apple Configurator, now, I have Apple computers that are somewhat old, Mac mini 2012 iMac 2012, I don't know what type of cable to use to do this since the iMac 2019 uses Thunderbolt 3 and the Mac mini or the iMac do not use that type of connection and finally the key combination is the same for my old computers thanks

This is very informative. However, I was looking for a way to get past a EFI password, to reflash or make it clean again so it can be used. Does the DFU do this at all?

I have another 2019 16" Mac Book Pro and tried to get the inoperable macbook into DFU mode and it keeps returning to internet recovery mode. No matter which key combination I try to get into different recovery modes it is always defaulting to internet recovery mode. Any suggestions of what I can try different to resolve this issue?
Hello Moody, this method will not clear the firmware password lock. The only way you can do it is to contact Apple with a proof of purchase. AppleCare can then remove the firmware password for you. Good Luck!!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation with a bricked A1989 model. Tried to do this with Configurator2, but the dead MacBook is not recognised on the tool after using this key combination. The host MacBook (mid-2012) is running Catalina 10.15.7, so I'm not sure if there is a compatibility issue with that. The version of Configurator2 is 2.14.
great video however I'm not able to enter DFU at all. My MacBook Pro 2019 simply is not starting at all when holding the buttons, I tried all variations. It will only start after I release the power button. I can hold it for 10sec, for 5 or for 1 min it doesn't matter, the mac will start only after I released the power button. In all videos I have seen all mac's start while holding the combination, mine doesn't. I tried the variation with power on too and "shutting down" but still I can't access DFU. Any advice? Hello QT, this means that your Mac is connected but not in dfu mode. Try holding the power button down, you should see the lock disappear. then try dfu mode again.

Thx for the all important better instructions on how to get into DFU mode! I'm trying to resurrect a faulty 2020 MBA 13" using a 2015 MBA running Monteray 12.6. Got into DFU mode. All the Advanced options in Apple Configurator are greyed out. I double clicked the large DFU icon anyway and under Apps on the left, got the message '"Apple Controller" is not booted. Click Restore to update the device to the latest firmware. So I did. It went through all the motions as per your video. After that the target device automatically booted to the internet recovery network selection screen (not the question mark folder). I restarted it with the ethernet cable plugged in. Internet Recovery starts but stalls with the countdown timer at 24:00 and the fan spinning high. Any thoughts?
I've been trying to upgrade RAM in an iMac Pro running Monterey, is reviving required to do this? I can't get it to boot (black screen) with the 4 new sticks of RAM. The 4 new sticks test clean and are the right specs for the machine and if I revert back to the original OEM sticks, it will boot fine so the 4 slots are OK. Any experience needing to do a revive (or restore) in order to make a iMac Pro properly detect the new RAM?
My mac comes alive, loading goes all the way to the end, then I get an error on the host device error 9, and then on the other mac the screen goes black (with backlight still on at 100%) and turns the fans on to 100%. What should I do??

Excellent video , I have a 2011 27inch IMac which has the T2 security chip installed. When you install the firmware password it disables all the commands except recovery. I have tried using recovery and it goes 1/2 across the progress bar and then goes to white screen? It’s running High Sierra 10:13:6 , my question is this will this DFU process work when I connect a MacBook 13 inch running High Sierra 10:13:6 via a Thunderbolt cable? The27 IMac was running fine now it hits the 1/2 way mark and freezes nothing progresses to log in screen. By the way I know the firmware password.

Help me Obi-Wan! I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 15" touch bar that has the T2 chip enabled (no external drive access/target disk mode) with NO OS installed. I can boot into internet recovery via Wi-Fi and ethernet connections. However, every attempt when downloading/installing the OS, it comes up with the error, PKDownloadError 8. I have tried 3 different internet connections (home, work, neighbor, all three via wifi and ethernet) but get the same error. I have tried to install via time machine backup, but it states it needs a backup that includes the MacOS. This Mac had Monterey when it was wiped and depending if you do Control-R or Option Control-R you get Catalina recovery or Sonoma recovery. Will a DFU restore/revive help? How can get this Mac to boot to anything? Thanks!

Hi, I do have few boards I would like try to restore them with Apple Configurator 2. The problem is, I don't have the exact body to test them. Got the battery, screen, fan and power cable. No keyboard or trackpad. My question is, is it possible to put them in DFU using an wired external Apple keyboard? Did anyone managed to do it? Hi. I tried to follow your steps with my MacMini 2018 as iot was not doing sec updates showing "Bad Magic" Warning Message after restart. As I said, I followed your steps. Just before the end of the update, I get the warning message: "System could not be revived. Device added from invalid state Restoring [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0xFAA (4010]" The front LED blinks the Morse Code SOS and there os no start fuction, no safe or restore mode available. So now it is really dead. Any ideas?
Macbook air 2020 intel bricked via update. Tried to revive and restore. Internet Recovery stays in an endless loop trying to sign into the wifi. Thoughts on how I can get past that? Is there a specific ipsw that is better to restore it with? Haven't had any luck with a bootable drive either. Or recommendations for an Ethernet adapter that works in recovery mode? I bought a MacBook Pro by auction, because it has a password in it, I watched it from the videos, while resetpassword, the system keeps turning itself off and on. CMD+R keys do not enter the recovery mode, I enter Wi-Fi from the internet and it starts to fill, after it is full, the machine turns itself off and on, I tried it from USB, but it did not load, it shuts itself down constantly, what is the reason for this? Possible Melvitronica. You could backup your data and attempt a REVIVE only to see. This would retain your data but only reinstall the latest version of T2 BridgeOS on your Mac.
hello sir i restored my mac pro 2018 like this now i am trying to re install mac os hut unable to do so, through internet recovery it gives error that the recovery server cant be connected although my internet is working perfectly fine. second method i tried is to re install using usb drive but when i try to do so it says security settings on this mac do no allow to use different startup disk ! can turn of this security setting? plz help ! i will be grateful thanks
Great stuff Mr mac ..My situation is I bought an 27" 2020 imac from a IRS sale...The unit doesnt have an OS and is iCloud Locked, has no OS ...Im assuming the worst as the previous owner did this on spite when the IRS took his estate ... I have a 2009 imac running high sierra ..WHat can I do in this situation ??
Dang what a bummer. If this was firmware or something else you had a few solutions. In this case iCloud Lock is pretty rock solid. There are a few groups out there that do offer icloud lock bypasses but I'm not sure if i trust them. At this point though, it might actually be worth a try. Let me know if you do try one.

I belived that they have been following the apple ethos of "always pushing for replacement". so I won't be able to repair it from them (futureworld.com.lk/) I have published support portal on my facebook page, twitter and some local forum. I found some owners who has the same spec devices like mine. once I educate them about what went wrong with my device they are not allowed to do the proceduer, or even afraid to put his/her device in a situation like this. you might heard Apple in South Asia is a necklace to the developing world, but for me this is pro tool. On my 2017 iMac, I had to use USB A to C to restore my 2019 MBP even though the 2017 has USB C.
Really hope this solves my problem. My macbook pro 16 just didnt turn on one morning. No fan spin, no charging chime, no lights, nothing. I have automatic updates on so it could possibly be a failed update. The last os reported on icloud is 10.15.6.

@@Mr.Macintosh Unfortunately it didn’t work. Couldnt get the mac into DFU mode at all. I guess its dead and unrecoverable. Outside the US and there are no apple stores here. Third party technician cannot fix it either. This mac is barely 2 months old, extremely disappointed.

After you entered to a Internet Recovery, and before that you can reinstall the OS, do you have to unlock the device with the Apple ID password?
Hi! great video. My MBP 2018 has an issue with Touch ID enrolment. I am pretty sure it is not a hardware issue. It says unable to complete Touch ID enrolment. I have tried many online solutions including pram and sec reset but nothing worked. Someone had a similar problem and they said reloading the T2 firmware fixed their problem as during updates, sometimes the T2 chip can corrupt the connection between Touch ID and logic board. Do you think I should give this a try? Is reviving the same as reloading T2 firmware?

Does the DFU Utility install the appropriate firmware version that should work, and not necessarily the latest one?

Hello Emilio, your best bet is to make sure that you are using a USB keyboard. Sometimes wireless keyboards can cause problems when you are trying to issue startup commands.
As far as the DFU BridgeOS install, if you attempt this just make sure that you choose the REVIVE option ONLY. This will just reinstall bridgeOS but NOT erase your data.
You could also boot your iMac into TDM target disk mode and get all the data for backup if needed. (this is if that works or not since you only have a black screen)

I tried with revive mode, the update appeared on the screen, but when I restart the screen is still black. i tried the destination function (t) but it doesn't work; disk utilities either. the last time I used it I shut down the system properly and the next day it stayed on
white screen. I turned it off and on again and now it starts up with black screen. keyboard commands don't seem to respond..

This has been a great help! Thank you for this video - I got to the recovery boot running and thought I was on my way to a fix to find that I have missing admin. Having had a bit of a look it seems as though I need to do this via the terminal in -bash-3.2#.... Do you have any ideas on how to set up a new admin so I can unlock the SSD and boot from a USB?

I have tried every site, all videos, but cannot get a customers Macbook Pro 2019 A2141 Intel i9 into DFU mode, was updating it to MacOS Ventura and it got stuck at the startup disk option. Now cannot get it out of that and every video that I see, it simply goes into the DFU mode. THe only difference is that Apple only has Apple Configurator to download, can't find Configurator 2 anywhere. The version that is downloaded says it is Version 2.15.1 and it also says (right on the main page when you open up the app) that Apple Configurator support iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV, no mention of MacOS. I've tried USB-C to USB-C, used Thunderbolt C-C, made sure I have Target and Host OS as Monterey but no luck!!!

Mr. Macintosh, thank you for this video and watched it a few times before I tried out the steps you have outlined. I have a 2019 16" Mac Book Pro that is stuck in internet recovery mode. I have another 2019 16" Mac Book Pro and tried to get the inoperable macbook into DFU mode and it keeps returning to internet recovery mode. No matter which key combination I try to get into different recovery modes it is always defaulting to internet recovery mode. Any suggestions of what I can try different to resolve this issue?
And, I even tried to boot off a macos installer usb drive and, kept defaulting to internet recovery mode.

Hello Moody, this method will not clear the firmware password lock. The only way you can do it is to contact Apple with a proof of purchase. AppleCare can then remove the firmware password for you. Good Luck!!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation with a bricked A1989 model. Tried to do this with Configurator2, but the dead MacBook is not recognised on the tool after using this key combination. The host MacBook (mid-2012) is running Catalina 10.15.7, so I'm not sure if there is a compatibility issue with that. The version of Configurator2 is 2.14.
great video however I'm not able to enter DFU at all. My MacBook Pro 2019 simply is not starting at all when holding the buttons, I tried all variations. It will only start after I release the power button. I can hold it for 10sec, for 5 or for 1 min it doesn't matter, the mac will start only after I released the power button. In all videos I have seen all mac's start while holding the combination, mine doesn't. I tried the variation with power on too and "shutting down" but still I can't access DFU. Any advice? Hello QT, this means that your Mac is connected but not in dfu mode. Try holding the power button down, you should see the lock disappear. then try dfu mode again.
Do you mean v2.16 for the apple configurator? That the version number in the App Store.

I'm trying to resurrect a faulty 2020 MBA 13" using a 2015 MBA running Monteray 12.6.
Got into DFU mode. All the Advanced options in Apple Configurator are greyed out.
I double clicked the large DFU icon anyway and under Apps on the left, got the message '"Apple Controller" is not booted. Click Restore to update the device to the latest firmware. So I did. It went through all the motions as per your video.
After that the target device automatically booted to the internet recovery network selection screen (not the question mark folder). I restarted it with the ethernet cable plugged in. Internet Recovery starts but stalls with the countdown timer at 24:00 and the fan spinning high.
Any thoughts?
I've been trying to upgrade RAM in an iMac Pro running Monterey, is reviving required to do this? I can't get it to boot (black screen) with the 4 new sticks of RAM. The 4 new sticks test clean and are the right specs for the machine and if I revert back to the original OEM sticks, it will boot fine so the 4 slots are OK. Any experience needing to do a revive (or restore) in order to make a iMac Pro properly detect the new RAM?
My mac comes alive, loading goes all the way to the end, then I get an error on the host device error 9, and then on the other mac the screen goes black (with backlight still on at 100%) and turns the fans on to 100%.
What should I do??

Excellent video , I have a 2011 27inch IMac which has the T2 security chip installed. When you install the firmware password it disables all the commands except recovery. I have tried using recovery and it goes 1/2 across the progress bar and then goes to white screen?
It’s running High Sierra 10:13:6 , my question is this will this DFU process work when I connect a MacBook 13 inch running High Sierra 10:13:6 via a Thunderbolt cable? The27 IMac was running fine now it hits the 1/2 way mark and freezes nothing progresses to log in screen. By the way I know the firmware password.
I really liked the clip, I connect with a USB C cable, from a MAC 2020 computer to a "Dead" MAC A1708 . and I have this message: cannot use thunderbolt accessory connect accessory to a thunderbolt port on this mac. Is it possible to bypass or cancel it?

Help me Obi-Wan! I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 15" touch bar that has the T2 chip enabled (no external drive access/target disk mode) with NO OS installed. I can boot into internet recovery via Wi-Fi and ethernet connections. However, every attempt when downloading/installing the OS, it comes up with the error, PKDownloadError 8. I have tried 3 different internet connections (home, work, neighbor, all three via wifi and ethernet) but get the same error. I have tried to install via time machine backup, but it states it needs a backup that includes the MacOS. This Mac had Monterey when it was wiped and depending if you do Control-R or Option Control-R you get Catalina recovery or Sonoma recovery. Will a DFU restore/revive help? How can get this Mac to boot to anything? Thanks!

Hi, I do have few boards I would like try to restore them with Apple Configurator 2. The problem is, I don't have the exact body to test them. Got the battery, screen, fan and power cable. No keyboard or trackpad.
My question is, is it possible to put them in DFU using an wired external Apple keyboard? Did anyone managed to do it? As I tried and I couldn't get to DFU by using the same sequence on the external keyboard.

iBuzz, you need the keyboard. It would probably be best just to pick up a used top case just for this purpose.

Hi. I tried to follow your steps with my MacMini 2018 as iot was not doing sec updates showing "Bad Magic" Warning Message after restart. As I said, I followed your steps. Just before the end of the update, I get the warning message: "System could not be revived. Device added from invalid state Restoring [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0xFAA (4010]" The front LED blinks the Morse Code SOS and there os no start fuction, no safe or restore mode available. So now it is really dead. Any ideas?
Macbook air 2020 intel bricked via update. Tried to revive and restore. Internet Recovery stays in an endless loop trying to sign into the wifi. Thoughts on how I can get past that? Is there a specific ipsw that is better to restore it with? Haven't had any luck with a bootable drive either. Or recommendations for an Ethernet adapter that works in recovery mode? I bought a MacBook Pro by auction, because it has a password in it, I watched it from the videos, while resetpassword, the system keeps turning itself off and on.
CMD+R keys do not enter the recovery mode, I enter Wi-Fi from the internet and it starts to fill, after it is full, the machine turns itself off and on, I tried it from USB, but it did not load, it shuts itself down constantly, what is the reason for this? Possible Melvitronica. You could backup your data and attempt a REVIVE only to see. This would retain your data but only reinstall the latest version of T2 BridgeOS on your Mac.

Dang what a bummer. If this was firmware or something else you had a few solutions. In this case iCloud Lock is pretty rock solid. There are a few groups out there that do offer icloud lock bypasses but I'm not sure if i trust them. At this point though, it might actually be worth a try. Let me know if you do try one.

I belived that they have been following the apple ethos of "always pushing for replacement". so I won't be able to repair it from them (futureworld.com.lk/)
I have published support portal on my facebook page, twitter and some local forum. I found some owners who has the same spec devices like mine. once I educate them about what went wrong with my device they are not allowed to do the proceduer, or even afraid to put his/her device in a situation like this. you might heard Apple in South Asia is a necklace to the developing world, but for me this is pro tool.
