OMG I cant believe i just came across this video with my exact faucet. I spent over 2 hours fighting with it and decided I was gonna take an angle grinder to it next week. The most frustrating part was not knowing who manufactured it because there are zero etchings on it so I was completely stuck. THANK YOU!!
Good video. I would have recommended dropping the P-trap and cleaning that out as you are installing the new faucet, since that is not something people do every day (or even ever few years). That also makes removal of the drain assembly easier as well.
You just saved me 30 minutes with an angle grinder, maybe a trip to the hospital, and likely my marriage. Thank you. This thing is a true BEAST (especially when it’s fully rusted in)
That was way to fast. I’m hablving yrouole with the know assemblies. They are rusted. . I’ve been to Home Depot 3 times already.
Thanks for helping out Truck Guy. Without knowing about that hidden allen socket I would have lost it. I started removing this pita faucet and soon realized I needed help, and there you were!
Literally spent hours trying to figure out what type of faucet i had and stumbled upon your video. Thank goodness
Thanks for allen wrench call out. That was the first valuable clue I needed.
Second was the c-rings. Would have been nice to more clearly see that as your hand was blocking, but it was enough of a clue to get me going elsewhere and complete the job.
Thanks
Thank you! I wasn’t aware of the second Allen screw that needed to be removed to loosen the fixture. That’s what I needed to get to those orings. What a pain!
THANK YOU!!! I was stumped. I kept trying to spin off the top washers after taking off the handles like others I've done before, but not his one! Didn't know what I was doing wrong. I had no idea that there was an allen head bolt inside the spout. You saved me, thanks!
perfect directions for this installation ,replaced my moen after 21 years
Thanks, glad the video helped!
So... every time I hear "guys" I have to do ten pushups. I save thousands on a gym membership. And I learn plumbing basics at the same time. Win win. Thanks!
By the way, I got the rusted faucet and the handles off! Just needed a bigger hammer! Didn’t hurt the sink at all!
Thank you, you saved my bacon. I was getting ready to try to grind it off when I found your video. Thank you!
Thank you. Saved a lot of time and aggravation.
Btw, the 5.5mm worked great. I was able to get the old faucet off - and I was stuck and it sat for over a week! Thanks!!
Great to hear you got it! Those are not hard to get off at all (even if you know what you're doing).
I used a 7/34 imperial hex. Seems like that’s what Moen would use in US
Thank you!!!!!! Getting the old one out was insane. Thanks for the directions.
Guys , if I hear guys one more time. Dammit dude !!!
Aside from needing to preserve the chrome handle, not much help. Ditch the music and explain and try not to say “guys” every three seconds
I died of laughter when I read your comment and then watched video lol😂😂😂😂
One would think this is a straightforward job. But nooOooo… here I am over at my sister’s place. That’s the first clue to problems ahead. No idea it’s a Moen Montecello so I’m down under sink turning off water then disconnecting water supply lines. Get them off only to look up at underside of faucet assembly to see metal plate connecting everything so it won’t easily pull up & out. Lovely. Crawl out from under sink & grab hold of hot side with channel locks. It breaks free so I twist & twist but it won’t lift off. Now mind you her handles are broken off for past 10 years. I’m looking down at innards & there’s all this what I thought is hard water buildup so I am now chipping away at that stuff like a dentist clearing plaque off your teeth. It still will not come off. Alright I move over to the cold side to try getting that one off. Using my vice grip channel locks I grab hold of chrome fixture and could not get thing to budge. An hour & a half later I am still where I was 10 minutes into the job. Left her house pissed off as usual because every project she asks me to do turns into a fiasco somehow. Going to try again tomorrow with my damn sawzall to cut thru the crap.
I had the same problem at my Moms with the same faucet as in this video. Tried to remove the hot handle because of a faucet drip, but the sleeve keeps turning and turning as I'm holding the top of the knob stationary.. I must have turned it 40 times counter clockwise but nothing gets loose!. I just want to stop the drip drip.
@@rgraz4929 I think I finally sawzalled the damn handle off
@@PJL7095 I just found out that the older faucets that look like the one in this video don't screw off from the base. The handle bases turn, but nothing loosens. There are instead c-clips that must be removed to replace the cartridges and to access them, the entire faucet must be removed. So I think your better off sawing it off!
@@rgraz4929 it was my sisters faucet & the crap I go through to repair stuff over there blows me away 😆😆. One minute with the sawzall & the faucet dropped down and was tossed out the window. Hahaa.
@@PJL7095 😀😃
This was so helpful. We needed to replace two 30-yr old faucets and couldn’t have done it workout this video.
Thanks. I was flipping out trying to take that thing apart. I was about to take an angle grinder to the metal piece below the counter.
Thank you for this video. The 5.5 Allen wrench was the greatest help. I was ready to break out the
That Allen wrench works on Vintage Pfister bathroom facet (really crappy design all those faucets)
Great tutorial, I used for Moen T4955 Castleby Chrome two-handle low arc bathroom faucet
The key part to removing the Monticello faucet handles from before 1999 here is removing the retaining ring/clip under the handle hub and over the decorative ring under the hub. You can only get at this clip by removing the faucet head and loosening everything up. That will give you enough play to get at it. I wrestled with mine for a ridiculous amount of time because the installer before me glued the hub and decorative ring threads together. There’s wasn’t enough clearance on the ring to get vice gripes on it unless you loosen the entire assembly, but once you get some play in that area you should be able to break it loose. Good luck! If you run into this problem, I hope this helps.
BTW you’ll see this here at about the 7:22 mark. I just got it loose enough to grab the clip with some duckbills and pulled it off. No big deal.
Turn up the sound for full effect!
Mine was original 1978 hardware. Came right off, no problemo. Quick and easy. Not a "beast" at all.
i have a set that has a 5 and a 6mm allen wrench. it didn't work but i ended up using a 7/32 and that did the trick. Also, how the hell did your handles come off so easily?
Hmmmmm? Me too. el problemo
My handles came right off. It's the dang faucet spout that I CANNOT get off
Any advice for getting the O rings off. mine are a solid circle that will not break apart
I'm removing the same model. Corroded crusty beast is right. Lol. I just cut it apart and remove in 3 pieces.
THANK YOU!!!!! It was perversely satisfying after hubs and handy guy spent 2.5 on this issue to tell them to not worry their pretty little heads about it, I had the solution. 😈. Big hugs!!
that style of faucet is really cool and the color is great, that is easy if you have the right tools, nice and clear tutorial as always, sometimes when i throw the instructions i have to pick them up lol
Lol, I love it! I agree, you always need the right tools, otherwise the job becomes very frustrating.
thanks, I have one like this and I didn't know how to remove it...but after watching this video I will give it a try. btw, you need to replace your sink too :)
Dude!! This saved us on removing them…well, *I* saved us by finding your vid after hubs and plumber screwed around for nearly 2 hours and $$$ trying to figure it out!! But I did give you all the credit!😂. Sooo…you didn’t reuse these? We are trying to reinstall them and can’t get the faucet to sit /secure properly to the gold ring/at the bottom. Hubs head is about to explode. Suggestions? 🤞
6:29 for me was key...with no obvious set-screws on the handles, or even a brand ANYWHERE on the thing, there was no obvious indicator how to remove the handles, valves, etc, or even where to start searching for instructions. After loosening the nut underneath one valve (the other was corroded in place), the valve body would lift high enough I saw "MOEN" imprinted in the plastic, leading me here.
Turns out you just fuckin untwist those escutcheons, the handles will be lifted straight up and out, then you can pop out the c-clip retainer above the washer, releasing the valve body to drop through the countertop.
Ok, you're my hero of the day. 5.5 mm magic.
Thanks for the tip on using a 5 mm hex key. However, this trick will only work if none of the components are not rusted together. If they are, good luck because I had to use my sawzall to cut away the retainers. Not fun whatsoever.
Great video except for the music. Music does not help the situation
True.
Now I know why my faucet handle bases keep turning a million counter clockwise revolutions but nothing is getting loose. Because the older style Monticello faucets (that look EXACTLY like the ones in your video) have C clips and the entire assembly must be either removed or loosed to get to the C-clips. With my luck, there's many videos showing how to simply unscrew the base to replace the cartridge, but none on the older style with the c-clips.
Thanks guys!!!!
Thanks Shawn!
So I have completed all the stems until the getting the base off with the allen wrench. Used a 5.5mm allen wrench and it won't move anything in hole on top. is there something underneath that has to be loosened for it to turn? The two handles came off no problem, but I also noticed that someone used caulk on the underside to hold the brass plate in place and have removed all the caulk. I am at a loss on how to be able to get the base off. Any suggestions? Happy to send video or photos of issue.
Can you chisel away the caulk? If not, maybe you need to go at it with an angle grinder. That really sucks cause caulk or anything like that isn't necessary for moen faucets. They fit on extremely tight without anything added.
7/32 Works fine too.
I'm expecting more detail how to remove the handles.
I need to disassemble “The Handle” itself without damaging it bro, and not the complete thing. How to disassemble the handle only please?
@KarlaJorge My experience with 2 of these from probably 1996 original installs says: you won't be able to save the handles ... sorry. I'm gonna guess you probably have a drip and just want to change the cartridges? Oh, boy.
In any case, while this video directed me to a 7/32" Allen wrench (after I converted from 5.5mm) and the parts hidden inside the handles, I had to break one handle with a pipe wrench and Dremel-cut the other one in half before I could get to the C-ring.
I came to a video thumbnail with the word STUCK and a big arrow pointing at a handle hoping to find out how to unstick that always stubborn part. Unfortunately, no such luck. And after examining the fruits of my hard labors here just now, I don't see how anything could unstick these parts.
So glad I found this vid. Thank you
My faucet looks EXACTLY like this. When I turn the rounded base of the faucet handle (as I hold the top stationary), it keeps turning along with the very bottom collar as if it's one piece. NOTHING gets loose. I can turn the base 100 times in either direction while holding the top of the handle stationary, and nothing gets loose. But after doing so, when I turn the water on again, it comes out black for a few seconds. What am I doing wrong? I need to fix the hot water from dripping. Thanks.
Any luck i cant get the bottom of the handles to spin at all
@@stoberski92 I think I had to hold the very bottom collars still with plyers while I turned / unscrewed the part above it. I can' remember the details.
How are the "O" rings removed?
Should have said "guys" more
that was stupid fast forward through the most complicated part. LOL
Thanks for the video!
Thanks Gil! Please subscribe if you haven't already. Much appreciated!
Goes to super speed at the time when we need to see what he's doing😢
Life saver. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I know this video was posted a year ago but I'm trying to remove mine and the Allen wrench absolutely will NOT budge in trying to loosen the faucet. I've tried a hammer, wrenches, etc and it will not move. Any ideas?
Allen wrench is the only way. Make sure it's inserted fully down. Then I would use a plumbers wrench to turn it.
@@TheTruckGuy well, I did finally get it turn but it ended up stripping it. My friend came over and pretty much ripped it off so at least it's off 🤣🤣🤣
Good to hear, nicely done!
5.5mm for the first part. Then during the 10x speed part you say use the “other” Allen wrench. Size?
Sorry, the only one needed is 5.5mm.
Wish this worked for me about to take the whole entire entire sink out
Instead of moen should be doing the pfister
Guys guys again guys one more time by guys
Use the word guys only once. Not needed😮
7/32 Allen works as well
GUYS!! Enough guys!!
The 10x speed through the hardest part made this video essentially useless to me. 'guys' repeated and the music just made it uncomfortable to view.
GUYS!
Guys
The background music is really annoying and unnecessary, other than that is a helpful video.
The word guys said one too many times = mute.
I think the allen wrench is 7/16" not 5.5 mm - made in US. Moen faucets that are neglected can be a bear to remove. I'd use some spray lubricant and let it sit a day or two if it's stuck. I personally only buy faucets with metal drains. They cost more but in my opinion are well worth it for longevity and durability. I also like pop ups - a step or two more but who wants to stick there hand into dirty water to open? Not the women I know. The more expensive Moen faucets also have cartridges which are far superior than the valves in the copper tubing.
I would never use a hacksaw underneath either. A pipe wrench will usually get that big nut loose even if pipe dope was used.
The C clips that hold the handles on can usually be popped off with a screwdriver BUT make sure you wear eye protection! Last resort would be to cut the C clip with a dremel type tool. No time was spent showing how to properly disassemble, and clean the drain or put in a new one which is extremely important.
Sorry. The allen wrench is 7/32 not 7/16. 5.5 mm is probably almost exactly the same. To take off the C rings get them loose by carefully pounding the end of one with a hammer and small flat blade screw driver. You may loosen it enough that the opposite end allows you to put another flat blade screwdriver in the newly created slot and it will pop off. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!
If that doesn't get it off try getting the ends of the horseshoe shaped ring toward you, then use a flat blade screwdriver on each end and push with moderate force. This should pop it off it didn't come off with the first method.
Either music is too loud or voice is too low. "Guys"--too much of that. What about the gals?
You cover up a lot with your hands. A different camera angle would have been very helpful.
Saved my fucking day
throwing the instruction away without reading it carefully is dumb
Using the word guys 10,00 times in a short video makes it hard to watch. Even if the vid has good content.
Please stop using the word "guys", if you want the handy "gals" to watch your helpful videos.
Will do, thanks Rusty!
I’m with rusty in this one as I’m sitting here struggling with the damned O rings….the 5.5 mm Allen wrench saved me from having to ask my husband 😜
This is the worst video ever. Please stop saying the word “GUYS “.
Must have said it 300 times in one video.
No worries Ronald, feel free to do the project without the video! Cheers guy!
Stop repeating "guys". Once is good.
STOP with the "guys" already! Annoying!
Annoying music
Music sucks.
BS!
What is BS?
