Bathroom faucet [amzn.to/3nInGIT]
Steps:
1. Shut off water by hand or with a specialty wrench. Be careful not to over torque.
2. Use a pan or rag to catch any dripping water under the sink. Turn on the faucet to relieve any water pressure left in the lines.
3. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet. Use a multi-purpose plumbing tool if you cannot reach by hand.
4. Remove the old faucet.
5. Place Plumber’s Putty around the bottom of the faucet to make a water tight connection. It should fill in any imperfection of the sink.
6. Place the faucet through the mounting holes in the sink and tighten the nuts.
7. Remove the excess putty.
8. Install the lift rod.

How to Replace a Bathroom Faucet | Ask This Old House

What takes most people 5 minutes takes 90 minutes for me. My home is old so I have to turn off water to the whole house. The tool was the key to success so I'm really glad i watched this video first. It gave me the confidence to try this by myself.
This video is perfect for when your client needs his brand new sink on a three foot pedestal fixed and doesn't need the water reconnected at the end of the install
Thanks so much for recommending the faucet tool. I replaced the old faucet in my bathroom today and it made all the difference.
When you're an old phart like me and laying on your back doing crunches trying to do that, what gets me through that chore are my vocabulary of four lettered words!
Mine are ouch, ogod, nooo, dam't, and c'mon
@@acubley those are too weak. I'd never get the job done!
@@Kevin-mp5of I just replaced my kitchen faucet a couple of months ago and both bathroom vanities. The basin wrench sure came in handy. The next time these repairs need to be done, it'll be time to call my son for help!
Lying on my back and looking up, makes the world go spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning! Well, you get the picture!!!
Just getting to go upstairs and get er done. Is there a proper name for the orange wrench? See you Saturday!
I did this very task this last weekend. I only had to go back to the home center twice for things I needed, and only had to undo a mistake I made once.
I wish they showed the whole process instead of cutting off the part about the drain rod at the end.
The hardest part is removing the existing faucet.
Where can I purchase that red wrench for removing the top nut?
Found it on Home Depot. “EZ change plumbing wrench”
YES! YES! YES! My sister actually asked me if I'd been in a fight, my knuckles are so ripped up from trying to get those nuts out...After watdhing this I went straight out to get that orange guy...."Ridgid EZ Change Faucet Installation and Removal Tool"! Problem solved! Thank you so much!!
When everything goes right 🙁. The shut-off is frozen or doesn’t close completely. Then the shut-off is solidly attached to the nipple with umpteen years of corrosion (a torch or heat gun helps, along with some periodic tapping with a hammer and some penetrating lubricant). Hope the nipple threads are still intact. Plumbing. Not for the faint of heart. Always know where the house shut off is - and where the wrench to turn it is. Love that under-sink wrench!
And in a condo where there is often no accessible water main, leave this to a pro.
Thanks real tips on the task.
"And the wrench to turn it" -- thank you, @robertbamford8266
How do you get the cabinet high enough so you don’t need to lay on the floor?
How do you install the lift?
Im just happy to be here with everyone
Still here?
@ yup
One thing worth doing: hire a professional to swap out gate valves for ball valves whenever and wherever possible. Open and close said ball valves slowly, of course, but far fewer headaches.
Thank you sooo much. We need to replace 5 faucets in our bathrooms.
Would have been a better video if you replaced a faucet in a real sink in a real vanity located in AN OLD HOUSE and then taken the faucet screen out and flushed the faucet of manufacturing residue and checked for any connection leaks afterwards. oh btw, plumbers putty is a petroleum based product and will deteriorate any plastic or rubber gasket so it should not be used under the rubber or plastic gasket. I saw in a different video made by someone else that clear silicon can be carefully used around the faucet gasket after the faucet is installed
I might be wrong but for some reason I get the vibe that Richard might know a thing or too
Amen brother; I really really despise these videos by “professionals” that give you the theory in a perfect world. Hats off to the REAL PROFESSIONALS who show you how it’s really done!!
@@Phys1gn *Two, not, "too." And he does, but he misses the mark in that he doesn't disclose what Lockemeister details above. There is now, however, a "stain free" version (by Oatey) that is safe to use with plastics (the blue lid).
Great video but it never goes that way especially at older sinks
👍 Yup! Totally old and rusted sinks. All these videos show new plumbing and without trying to wedge your body upside down in a 12” space! Hahaha
I predict 3 trips to the hardware store and then after 6 hours realize I need a plumber. And it's sad because I have the tools and physical ability to do this.
I gave up on putty a long time ago. Silicone is the answer.
Most faucets have a rubber gasket, in lieu of a shitty putty seal that always is uneven,
Where to get this red color torque?
What is that tool called that he used to loosen the nuts?
Happy New Year you two 🎉
what kind of wrench is that with the red handle?
That's a good question. It has a lot of names, such as: Faucet and Sink Wrench,Multifunctional Faucet Wrench Tool,Basin Wrench Plumbing Tools with Gradienter,Double Head Sink Installer Tool Water Pipe Spanner Tackle For Plumbers And Homeowners, and also a "faucet change-out tool"
very nice 👍
Came here to see what tool to use to get under the sink since I can’t get a good angle. Now I need to buy a new tool 😂
“EZ Change Plumbing Wrench” for anyone wondering it’s at Home Depot
What is the name of the red wrench Richard used to close the water valve and to remove the bolts from the bottom faucet?
I had one. The red plastic snapped under heavy torque. Its Chinese
The faucet wrench he used is "EZ Change faucet tool".
Mine is from Ridgid and is very strong and works amazing!
There isnt a knob under my sink to turn off what do i do ?
All my stuff is metal and 2 cans of WD 40 and I don’t have their fancy tools. Took 45 minutes to loosen one water line but.
Why in the world would a shut off valve work smoothly in a old house and not require shutting off the water to a house and replacing the valve.
Exactly
Nice
Why is there no videos show all metal pipes
Thank you Richard. You make it look easy. I hope it is. 😉
It never is. Especially for most people who have had their old faucets for >25 years
Are they filming again or just doing reruns?
were you looking for a specific thing? or.... how many new videos of changing a faucet do you need?... this is youtube.. no reruns here.
Pro tip, cut a socket with the same design 1/5 off the side to loosen up O2 sensors on car engines
Hello, I am Ayoub from Algeria. I am 21 years old. I have 3 years of experience in installing water and gas pipelines. I am looking for a job in America or Canada. Thank you.
good luck Ayoub!
There are many openings now as plumbing is in high demand. Good luck!
Why use plumbers putty when you have a gasket?
Instructions on two types of recent faucets I installed, state to NOT use plumbers putty. Things are changing I guess.
Hmm...knowing there's a wrench thingy to make the job easier helps but the video doesn’t show how to do the sink drain....I give the video an incomplete.
You guys looked a lot older. But ultimately smarter than me 😁
How many times is a typical homeowner going to use that specialized tool? How about show how to do this task with common tools most people have. FFS.
02:19 - what game the lobster-bots play with "gabby"
I always had Kevin pegged as the one to "catch the nuts"
🦞🦞🦞
What am I doing wrong? It's so simple to install but when I turn the water back on it starts spraying from the top of the hose....I got that thing on as tight as it can possibly go!
Missing gasket?
stick to a standard basin wrench
Does anyone still use the term lavatory? Or is that an East Coast thing?
It's a technical term from the code books
too simplistic - so many old faucets are rusted and the connections do not look like the new faucets. show removing one from a real old house
Sure......have the sink above your eye level.............not on your BACK .
why all these old house videos are so useless? Why nobody but nobody shows how to remove varies old bathroom faucets? YT is fool of clowns.
You left so much out. Not helpful
😭these guys are getting so old 😭
