The 228 is a 305 instead of working on it. You’d be better off to get a crate engine and put it in there from three-quarter ton pick up truck or camper special like I did. They say you can’t do it but I’m going on like nine years.

Yep that’s one of the reasons we didn’t run it long. The trim motor is shot. 🤷♂️
The engine is one thing, but when you look at the condition of the rest of the boat, be prepared for a shitton of more work and sinking quite the amount of money into it(always more than initially calculated).
I bought a run down 30 ft canal cruiser and it took me the weekends of two years to bring her back to presentable/liveaboard condition.
And it wasn't even my first boat. Boats are treacherous.
Yes it has been quite a project 👍 but it has been fun.
Spray down everything with some PB Blaster and let it sit for some hours

With some two stroke oil, for the cylinder walls. That carb cleaner is washing the oil out of the cylinders.
Give that carb a few taps with the persuader

The timing was good. It was a bad condenser in the distributor 🤷♂️
Many a bay is lined with these cheaply made vessels, thus the name 😅

Why do people think that carb cleaner is flammable. If it was it would be called EITHER. CARB - BREAK CLEAN NOT UNLESS OPEN FLAME
I have run many engines on 2+2 carb cleaner. It works great. Our problem was weak spark.
