'Got a few damp patches around here, and i'm not talking about my seat' - priceless
i get the feeling she likes it.
Well spotted mate - obviously giving her a real buzz around the buttocks & just creaming with the power
Steve someone watched the inbetweeners
*suit... not seat
pretty sure she said seat
Gross
Caterham, hands down. I want one so bad.
Atom is cool, but I also like the vintage look of the Caterham.

The Atom looks too “Thunderbirds” and apparently that rear wing is mainly for show.
Call me crazy, but if I owned any of these cars, they would most definitely be my daily drive
Khazar01 same😂 itd be so cool
me too! because why not? people daily drive sport bikes, and this cars have a lot more comfort-practicality)))))
For the price, it'd have to be. lol
no they wouldn’t. ......you’d be lost the moment u couldnt connect your phone.....or got wet.
Two months later, your back is shot, you’ve got piles....
To every watcher of this video: congrats!!!!!
You really understand what a car should be, and your driven by passion, not how "big" or "luxurious" it is. Congratulations
Like those below, I was surprised that the Caterham was so close to the Atom. Putting an extra 40 bhp and £8K would possibly have removed the slight gap completely. It suggests that all that high tech scaffolding on the Atom is a bit of a gimmick.
David Hayes orrr shes just not a very good driver?
She used to be a racing instructor, so I'd assume she is a pretty fuqing competent driver lol
50 hp is not that much of a diffet in a track
@@ulisesavila2879 Yes if one had 1000 HP and the other 950 but this is around the 300 mark so it is pretty significant. They say every 10 lbs = 1 HP, so that's like the Catterham has a 400 lb extra weight. That means the Catterham must handle much better ( with the settings they were using) to keep pace. That was illustrated in the overlay.
@2:20"I've got a few damp patches around here, and I'm not talking about my seat". Did they script that or does she actually review cars in this manner? Couldn't blame her given the awesome cars she reviewed!
Revoe Lucion No, that's Vicki. She isn't afraid to express how a car's dynamics excite her.
pretty sure she's talking about urine not saying that she's wet
@@CaptJofaz apt name
@@CaptJofaz no shes wet
@5:08 Where can I get those perfectly engineered driving boots?
Fifth gear is new top gear
+woodtvnetwork try again, fifth gear is original top gear
Fifth Gear was always better! Mr. Needell really makes the show for me. It's too bad the show has been shuffled around like a hot potato. Top Gear sucks, I have never made it through a whole episode.
☣droid☣ top gear is the shit. 5th gear wishes it can be as good as top gear. Too bad the people that make up top gear isn't top gear anymore. Anyway it's the trio that makes the show not the name.
Why does a show need him in it? It's about the cars, not the nobbers.
Two words, THANK YOU!
"I'm not talking about my seat..." Charming....lol
It's hard to pick which one I would have, but I definitely love the Atom's engine noise. 😍
It doesn't happen often that we hear a 0-62 time of 2.8s and the words "slower than" in the same sentence. Haha!
i am surprised that they are so equal
you would think with 40HP extra, downforce, mid engine, modern chassis layout, fancy suspention and all the other bits and bobs the ariel would smash old mr caterham
Kalimerakis this is the magic of decades of refinment, also the engine chassy, suspension are on par with the ariel, the main difference between the two is the engine placement, carzy anc cool cars tho.
i agree
but the caterham is a lot more aesthetic and I assume more predictable to drive with the engine in the front
oh and sequential gearbox!
would be a no-brainer for me
+Kalimerakis you would assume wrong - the MR layout is used in just about every supercar and open-wheel formula for a reason, the same reason it is used in the Atom. The weight distribution is much better leading to better balance, more grip and more controllable oversteer.
Mijc Osis You are partly correct.
There are countless FR-cars that have a perferct 50:50 weight distribution (like the caterham in this video) so it doesn't really affect the grip.
The bonus of the MR-layout is that the mass is closer to the center of the car, which makes it turn easier around its vertical axis.
That makes for a more agile but harder to control chassis.
Its the ice-dancer-thing: arms out-spins slow, arms in-spins fast.
Racecars aren't about beeing controllable, they are about beeing fast.
Kalimerakis actually they are FMR, the engine is midships not hanging out the front, but that is also static rather than dynamic balance. The front engine loads up the front wheels under even light deceleration leading to understeer.
Your later assertion is ridiculous - controllable IS fast, unless you are driving a ridiculous daytona ring circuit or a salt flat top speed run to which neither of these vehicles are suited. Both these cars are designed for agility, and the MR layout provides better agility and better mid corner speed.
Given that the cars are so different and the performance so similar it would have been very interesting to hear more about how different they are to drive.
Great cars, nice review! I would go for the Lotus 7 though!
I'll take the Caterham any day!
+Coolrockndad It's 50.000 GBP for a very small amount of car. At least you get your money's worth in the Ariel.
+mattorama At least you can say you own a car when you have a Caterham. ;-)
+Coolrockndad People who own cars with roofs might disagree.
+mattorama Indeed they might but for sure the Caterham is closer to being a street car then the Adam is.
+Coolrockndad But I will buy the fully loaded Atom 3S and 3.5R FOREVER!
I do drove a racing version of the atom at castle combe last week and my God its insanely fast and agile in the bends the speeds you can achieve in a corner is astonishing my neck felt broken after I was done from the g force
Ok I admit it when she started talking about going up and down the box I had to go in the bathroom for a while.
While I like both cars, I prefer the Caterham. The Atom looks... unnecessary. It's trying so hard to be "the ultimate trackday car", while the Caterham is just good looking in a way, IMHO. It has the 70's styling refined by today's technology.
Also - 0.4s is IMO in the margin of error as for the fact, that humans make mistakes. It might be that it wasn't good atom lap and near perfect caterham lap, might be the opossite, or something in between.
+rubbers3 given it is computer timed there is no margin of error, not in the accuracy we are given.
And the atom isnt trying, it is just designed without compromise, 50 years after the caterham (lotus seven) was made for the same purpose.
Mijc Osis Dude, I wasn't talking about the way to mesure time, I was talking about driving. For it to be acurate there should be a lot (and I mean A LOT) of laps to compensate for possible mistakes made while driving. Plus - even computers can make mistakes. And physics has it's limitations as well.
Oh, and the "no compromises thing" does not matter to me. Caterham still looks beautiful, and atom looks like a poser.
rubbers3 so if its just about looks - why buy a track car - there are better looking cars than either, For that matter - why not just buy a sculpture and whack it on a lorry?
Mijc Osis Soooo, you are one of those people. I'm wasting my time trying to explain this to you, but I'll do my best - If I want the ultimate trackday car, then I'd get something that's ultimate track only car. If I want anything else, then the way it looks is something that looks good to me, as it makes the car more enjoyable. What's the point of having a car that you don't enjoy cause it's ugly? AAAANND. Whether or not one things a car looks good or bad is PERSONAL PREFERENCE. There is no way of measuring it. So... Fuck off.
(edit - typo)
rubbers3 *fuck OFF
you are arguing that a road legal track car looks UNNECESSARY?? dude - for fucks sake. you are welcome to your opinion - but dont have a hissy fit if it doesn't make any fucking sense. You buy a track car to go fast and for it to handle well, the atom is just better at it, it is a 21s century design vs a 1950s design.
If it isnt about pure speed then get something prettier if you just want to drive something beautiful - my example was an extreme but an e30 is better looking in the same way and a whole lot more comfortable too, there are a million choices outside a pure track car that costs a bomb and doesnt look as good for it.
It would be like buying an aston purely for the track - just is a strange thing to do, it is a grand tourer. I understand what you mean about beauty, but thats not what either are for.
Or to put it another way (apropos of your post) you are a fuckwit
Fancied Vicky when I was younger iv gotten older .. nothings changed 🥰🥰
Vicki ran over a paperclip and felt it! I ran over a Penny with mine and could tell weather it was heads or tails!
I have a 'Busa powered MK Indy which is a lot of fun as is. Caterham 620R is my dream car !
Vicki is such an Amazing driver
Need For Speed introduced me to both of these cars..... Glad I'm a somewhat gamehead.... I love both of these.... I gotta have a Atom before I die
Was Vicki driving in Ugg boots???! Amazing driver!!
These are my favourite cars of all...(i own an rs5 v8)
Hats Off To You! It Seens. fork sneeze What's your opinion about tmat
Would be cool if they had H pattern manual boxes
how come when i look at the lap records for the Anglesey circuit, there are loads of lap times around the 50 second mark ? is there a short circuit ?
Obviously better drivers than a TV presenter.
Starbar Rothschild idk ive seen different ones saying no. Is either like 50s as u say and then another one on the same site saying its 1m7s so there might be
Amazing videi
Best buy do Bugatti's
i feel like the audio was recorded after... so -1 5th gear +1 top gear and new amazon Prime Gear
Is it ever not raining there?
Yup, I'd love to have both of 'em. And, I'd use 'em often for the daily commute.
The Caterham has a big and flat enough backside that I'd spell out, "0-60 < :03" And I'd openly laugh at every Camry or Mustang that wanted a piece of that action.
On the Atom, I guess I'd have to spell it on top of the rear wing and sneer at the 'machos' in their pickup trucks and SUVs.
Or, on second thought, I'd write, "Quicker than everything, but Motorola," in a nod to the LEOs while hoping for a little leniency.
I like the atom.but the dacia duster is just wow wow wow
Those are some nice kitchens.
like them both
Caterham still LOOKS like a Car too . A Timeless Design . Lotus-7's were weapons using Shitty Pushrod Engines .
Now they're fitting Super-charged CRAZY stuff . In cars that weigh slightly over Half a Tonne .
VBH you little minx!
1:42 - "Motoring to the minimum"
No, that would be a 2 stroke gokart. Probably just as fast around SOME circuits/racetracks.
IMO the Caterham looks and sound better. And it's my obvious choice.
But IMHO the Atom IS the BEST CHOICE AND SOUNDS THE BEST!
A duratec simply doesnt sound better than a K20 Vtec engine, come on now :D
Put someone in it who could really push
Vicki can drive. She was a part timer in the Mini Challenge circuit last year, and did pretty well. She beat Rebecca Jackson most of the time and she was a full time driver.
Even of it had been the Ariel V8, I'd choos most any Caterham every time.
***** Why?
Martin Nikolov Atom is a car you really need to master to push because of the rear weight bias. With the front engine caterham the front end digs in more as you turn.
Martin Nikolov I just love the look of them, and they're fast enough for me anyway :) I just love that style. I don't think the Ariel is a bad car in any way, only the look of the Caterham is just my taste, and for such a car, that matters a lot to me. Just like if I were to buy a supercar, I would almost always choose the Noble M600 due to it being all manual, pretty much, and having the looks and sound it has, others might be better, but that just hits the spot for me.
I completely agree with you, caterham 7 is a style from the 60's, but the power of the 21st century. Based on the video, caterham would be much faster if the power is the same as the Ariel atom, but it would be a lot more difficult to drive, so it's less powerful but easier. If you ask me, I'd choose a BAC Mono even if it twice the price of those 2 cars
DOGEY DOGE
The BAC is very beautiful as well, but I prefer the Caterham's style.
i like Vicki, but is she really consistent within 4 tenths?? I doubt it!
amazing cars, i would never buy one even if i had the money beacuse to drive a car at that level of performance you need same awsome driver skill to push it to the limit. i would end up in a tree or a bush after a few miles probably.
Dumy Jobby believe in yourself.
Try driving one first. Well done, light cars such as these are easier to drive than heavier, taller cars. Because they're light, they do everything with much less effort and better, more direct feel.
Caterham looks and sounds better, but Atom seems far safer with that rollcage. Would prefer C though.
Caterham, by a mile, looks better and there are tons of customization. Such an awesome car.
k20 > Duratec :D Also the lady should hit some apexes instead of drifting the ariel =/
Is there any chance that i could have this thing in 5 or 10 years? i mean, all of the cars i like are going up in the value and considering that i live in poor country, most of those cars i probably wont buy... but this atom... omg i love it and i would love to have it and the prices are relatively normal but i am afraid that they will also go up in the value sooo can somebody tell is there a chance that this cars will stay "cheap" (ofc they are not cheap but they are a lot cheaper than most of the cars i really like). I dont know much about that so i am asking someone who knows. thanks and cheers! (i will post this comment in a lot of atoms videos xD)
I get the impression the Atom eitherr has a so-so chassis, or she drove the Caterham better. Quite a difference in power. Same weight. Atom has got spoilers front and rear. Ordoes the messy aero make the Atom just slower?
yes but it give it more down force, allowing for more aggressive driving...
+Logan Shealy what's downforce worth if it doesn't bring cornering speed?
It was dryer when she drove the Caterham, it also had better tyres for a track.
Any chance she could hit an apex?
You dumb? You don't want to hit the apex on a greasy track. You take the wet line as there is more grip.
I'm guessing that you dont know much about racing lines
I’d love an Ariel Atom.
No contest, save eight grand and have those Lotus 7 looks, no brainer.
Mine would need a windscreen and a stereo to play the Prisoner theme music though.
Drive an Ariel atom V8 then you'll be scared
Ariel Atom 500 V8
fastest 0-100 kmp
that 500 mean 500 HP
Vaibhav Vohra english?
Yup
Caterham has no aero kit and also high drag coefficient but still manages to do a lap in almost the same time. I don't get it.
I would have liked to see what the cars could do with a good driver.
+Newton Washinton exactly, someone who brake with the left foot at least ¬¬
yeah, with a sequential, should be using left foot to brake
She sounded like her arms were getting tired. That would make up the lap time and make the Caterham faster right?
Nice to see women on the track having fun. Especially in an atom.
catherham all the way.. mostly because of the FR layout, i don't want a 400lb pendulum on my tail
But people seem to prefer a bit more weight on the rear which makes the car trailbraking better, but personally I’ve only driven mid engines on sim and they handle much better except if you like drifting it seems harder and it’s explained by theory
Caterham looks like the kind of car that will lift off and fly into bushes if you drive it fast enough
from 2:22 to 2:30 :P
HA arial clued in .i see welds now , not braised together like a wind instrument anymore
Äch ier kennet mich...
Power is good! More Power is just better!
Das Teil isch ächt en uberlegig wärd!!
Driving miss daisy
0:46 She is excited, while sounding boring
I lapped in both cars over 10 seconds quicker but she did her best and that's what counts ...
I bougth this 2 last 2 weeks ago and i used it everyday in Real Racing3
JayEvoX Aquino wow. We are soo proud of you
Shame these cars are so hard to come by :(
Heya there . but Looks for me truly htt vidio steel =D
this atom is ⅓ of the price of the v8 but it's slower by only that much
The V8 is a limited run without an aftermarket engine.
WTF?! Somehow with their camera work they managed to make these look slow.
That shows better realism.
Both cars are fantastic but I prefer the caterham
What about the atom v8
Caterham all the way baby!
Does she say “Veyron Territory” in every video?
Did V just do only 1 lap in each car? Those times are so close!
I suppose she sounded solid on the verdict, regardless.. but
(&!) that money for a toy, choose which you feel sexier in; comparison shoppers.
Must be very nice to be yous..
Enjoy.
Fifth gear is no TOPGEAR !!!!
+Diep Trien no, because there are six gears :D
Atom v8?
Basically exactly the same then... the time difference is negligible
Caterham all day long. I drove the V8 atom a few years ago and it was mega..the closest thrill to riding a motorbike Ive had on 4 wheels..trouble is, it just looks so ugly, whereas the 7 is an absolute classic.
The Aerial is much sexier, imo.
The atom is less than a second faster and is 10s of thousands more expensive. I love them both but the Caterham is more attainable and a supercar Slayer.
Who drives in Uggs though?
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that. No idea how she wasn't pushing two peddles at the same time!
Caterham. And a license plate KAR120C.
The Caterham is a 40+ yr old design and quite frankly, in my eyes... looks shocking. And has zero side protection.
It's also cramped as hell to drive. You would need to be very friendly with any passenger, as you constantly touch them whilst driving. It's awful really.I could not stand it. Combined with Offset pedals and generally very poor ergonomics, I disliked it a lot.
The Atom by comparison is light years ahead.
Way more comfy, spacious, better ergonomics, better kit, look, feel, and well, just about everything.
It's a superior machine in every single way.... by a long way.
Ariel is Street legal?
+Darkstar Productions ye
bad thing with the atom is that it is a police magnet on public roads
If you took the wings of the atom it would be a lot slower
I think the Westfield 7 with s2000 rotrex supercharger engine has a better chance to dethrone the Atom instead of the stupid ZETEC engine.
The Caterham sort of looks like an actual car you'd see on the road. The Ariel, not so much.
I’ll take a Caterham any day.
They both did the same time. Come on, she only raced them once.
they seem to drive like bikes..
ha?
The downforce didn’t help Ariel too much 🤔
Not a great review..don't get a sense of just how fast they are..prefer the oversteer from the caterham than the understeer from the atom
The Atom was quicker… despite Vickys damp patch.
look like
Was that Vicky driving? Didn't sound like her tbh
It is Vicky after all.
If we consider the price of the Atom as justified then the Caterham is massively overpriced. That things moulds were paid for 40 years ago and not much independent R&D has occurred since. Caterham should be 35G, no more!
What moulds do they use then for the Caterham 7. The chassis are made out out tubular steel and in Jigs. The Caterham chassis is a lot different i.e. triangulation a lot stiffer than the old Lotus 7 chassis. I do know as I used to own a K series R500 and my friend owned a classic S3 Lotus 7.
Totally different cars but looking the same. Back to the cars I'd say the Caterham was the better car and will hold its value better than the atom come re-sale time.
Victoria Bailey
I don't agree that the Atom will fare worse than the Caterham. Atoms are rare and the potential second-hand buyers market is huge.
If you think there hasn't been a whole lot of r&d with the 7, then you'd be quite wrong. The car has had a change from a live rear axle to independent suspension, resized chassis, aero tweaks, and Caterham was working on a car that used custom butted tubing to save weight and stiffen the chassis. Its pretty much the ship of Theseus at this point.
Probably better to put a decent driver in both and then re-time the laps. Vicki is OK but she isnt fast... Maybe 15 years ago but even then wasnt a FAST driver
4 tenths of a second slower? So what? A better driver might erase that.
