Of course Jeremy would pick the Ferrari just like how Richard would pick the Porsche and James would say both are rubbish
James owns more that one Ferrari
He has only owned two Ferrari's in the past he sold his F430 and has the 458
Hariz Hafi james has owned ferraris you jackass
Neerav Reddy James has also owned several Porsches, a 964, 993 and an early 997, I believe.
+Hariz Hafi it is the 458 italia speciale
Back when 400hp was a lot. Boy, have times changed.
still is a lot
400hp is still plenty unless you're Lewis Hamilton. Anything higher and you're probably buying a death trap, unless you take advanced driving courses.
Of course 400hp is still a lot for a normal car. But those are racing version of top sports cars. Today the too version of any estate car has more than 400hp.
400hp today is a sporty version of an average car. The track versions like the current GT3 RS have >500hp. Cars like the 911 Turbo S even 650. 400hp is not a statement anymore.
because cars were way lighter back then. an amg merc may have 600+ hp but also weights close to 2 tons
yeeaah great times!
They should come back to this test with a modern GT3 RS and a 458 Speciale
they probably will, since this was way back in 2008
The 911 GT3 RS is not out yet, they will probably launch it in March this year. Chris Harris will surely make that test.
It would be no contest..... The GT3RS would annihilate it. A better comparison would be a 991.2 GT3RS DTM vs. 458 speciale DTM.... but then again the differences would be marginal at best and purely dictated by track and driver.
2019 gt2 rs vs 488 pista
trenton gassner not even fair for the pista
I watched this episode when it came out when I was in college. Never thought in a million years that I would one day actually own Challenge Stradale. I do now and I love it! Always dream big everyone and work hard!!! 😃
That's amazing. Congratulations
@@benlowe578 thanks
@@thechallengestradale what job do you do?
Congratulations. I plan to do the same someday. 🔥🙏
Niceeeee, respect
The first time I ever see Jeremy say something nice about a Porsche...lol
He still couldn't avoid relating it to the beetle :D
Also the carrera gt
Did you forget the 928 story? Brought a tear to my eyes.
Am I the only one who thinks the 360 still looks sharp?
No , I'm with u
Well there are two of you
MrBarrageman the 430 was a step back to me, looks wise at lease. Now the 355 still looks killer
MrBarrageman yes u are
It could of come out 4 months ago just needs then stupid new lights everyone fits
My oh my that Ferrari looks fresher and sleeker than the ones today in my opinion. That back-end is the definition of sexy even for 2017
After all these years this is still one of the best super car track tests Jeremy conducted, in my opinion.
The GT3RS looks great; the 360CS though - that V8 sounds glorious.
I'm definitely more of a Porsche fan but I must concede, that Ferrari looks just beautiful!
Me too ...
InternetCannonFodder
It's probably because the 996 911 it's stacked up next to is one of the ugliest cars ever to come out of Stuttgart.
You need to drive a 911 for five minutes to understand why you need one, and why it's the best driving vehicle of all time.
Yeah!!
this is the moment i decided that the 360CS is my dream car
after 12 years of hard work, I finally get my 360CS
from Hotwheels Elite
😭😭
damn hotwheels elite
u r in a diffrent class then the rest of us peasants
I have a 360 CS, it’s not all that great....
Just kidding. I’m broke too 😭
Congrats
Imagine getting the same laptime while saving 50k, and 14 years later your car is still reliable and robust as new.
That mistake in the Ferrari's lap cost at the very least .05, probably more.
Agreed, whilst the Ferrari has the panache and "look at me factor" the Porsche will still run reliably 20 years later.
i buy ferrari just for fun factor
On Corvette you'd save another 50k but performance is not that relevant at some point
I have a 360cs, it works perfectly and now it’s worth twice than Porsche
So, all this technology and the extra 50.000 and still the lap time is the same! In terms of performance this is a clear win for the Porsche!
+Marios Koutras ur paying 50,000 more cause the driving experience makes it far more special than the porsche
In what way exactly? I have driven both and I didn't notice anything special about the ferrari. And no, I don't keep any bias towards the 360, because it's a 'ferrari', i couldn't give a rat's ass about the brand. The GT3 RS is cheaper, more reliable, more fun to drive and much better than the overpriced italian ravioli.
Please tell me where exactly did you get the chance to drive a 360 CS and GT3RS .I myself studied car design in Italy i've never even came across a 360CS or a Porsche GT3RS and trust me i have seen a lot of cars . Few of those cars were made so trust me it's hard to put your eyes on one of those BUT it is very very simple to lie about stuff over the internet .
There is no way he drove both cars.
if you're in the market, you can test drive them
Man I love Porsche's. Something about them has made me have a soft spot for them since I was young. I would love to own one, one day. A man can dream!
Amen.
did you buy one yet?
My man have you reached your dream? I sure hope you😁
I mean anyone can go in the back yard and catch a tree frog.
Nothing like a porsche
The 360 is such a classic piece of design it will never look dated
Damn, the music, Boards of Canada. What a selection for a BBC show about cars, I wonder who picked the songs
".. I think a Ferrari is a scale down version of God."
XD
I love you jeremy.
And the Porsche is jumped-up version of Volkswagen Beetle
@@whiplash9948 actually it was Jeremy who said that...
Andrea M. Jeremy says that for comedy and still praises Porsche’s, this guy is a #1 fanboy

I need a list of all the songs used in this. Top Gear always has phenomenal soundtracks to their episodes.
Aphex Twin
Boards of Canada - Dawn Chorus @6:10
look up Boards of Canada album Geogaddi and you will find most of the songs there.
all Boards of Canada, the songs are 1969, pete standing alone and dawn chorus
most of us work 30-60 hrs / week and barely get by, and yet imagine there are people who have so much throwaway money that they can have a "track day" car
The 360cs is very rare and worth a fortune these days
and it sounds a million times better than the SF 90
I absolutely love how they used boards of canada's music in this video timestamp: 3:51
There are 4 more Boards of Canada songs in the video - 0:35 Dawn Chorus, 1:20 Sunshine Recorder, 1:49 1969, 3:20 Julie and Candy.
@@yesicarmranan pete standing alone
When it comes to cars like these, character defines everything.
So both win i guess, maybe more the 360.
The soundtrack guy is a _huge_ Boards of Canada fan
If I got $5 for every time I saw that 2014 Chevrolet Corvette commercial I would be able to afford most of the cars on this show
You watch alot of tv lol
damn, you're from 2014, that's a long time ago
Love hearing BoC in top gear
Respect where it's due, the top gear team has a utterly brilliant taste in music.
So much for Ferrari is scaled down god. So are the tracks by "Boards of Canada" in this video. Fair play...!
That exhaust note @8:05 when Stig downshifts is just great.
So happy to hear that Boards of Canada "Geogaddi" music in the Porsche GT3 review!
So the Porsche was the true winner here with less hp and a cheaper price tag.....
not for anyone who has common sense.
flyingphoenix113 The Porsche is for people who can actually drive the other for those who want the car to drive them fool.
manniefaces That would be a GTR. Ferrari's (especially the high end Challenge Stradales, Scuderias, Speciales, ECT.) are know for their organic driving experience. Just because they don't have terrible tendencies like a rear engined 911 doesn't mean that one is in any way "detached" from the driving experience.
But the GT3 still wins at the end of the day.
rodriguez hill on this track maybe. But not on any track with a sizable straight or sharp hairpin.
I will like my Boards of Canada with a sip of some Porsche; thanks
why is the first comment under every top gear video always a kiddie comment like "Nissan GTR is faster" ? WHY?
deluded fanboys
crawler oz Grand wishes and dreams of armchair-racer, Forza-playing scrubs The GT-R is a fat pig and there are plenty of faster cars. The new C7 Z06 will obliterate the GT-R on track for 25% cheaper. The Nismo doesn't really count, as you can't even get your hands on one, let alone for anywhere close to MSRP if you could. The Nismo costs more than twice as much as the C7 Z06, but barely edges it out by a second on track.
+chbrules the c7s supercharger leaks unlike the gtrs twinturbo v6
NINJUNK 00 Cool story, bro. GT-R is still a fat pig.
chbrules just like you sister
Love that sound out of the Ferrari !
Woah Boards of Canada feature on top gear thats sick
Had both. Both are fantastic. GT3 feels a bit more competent on the track but the Stradale is a rockstar to own. Plenty of positives for both though... And I never turn the radio on in either.
The smoothest drifting Jeremy has ever done is done right here.
0:35/6:00, 1:20, 1:50, 3:21 and 3:51...5 x Boards of Canada tracks in one car review?! Nice work!
Brings back good memories watching this. One of my favorite episodes.

Always a pleasant surprise watching old Top Gears (downloaded and not off Netflix) and they have the original BBC library of music (Aphex, BoC, DJ Shadow). Bless the music supervisor and his incredible taste in music

So basically the Porsche won.
It has less power (40PS), weighs more (80kg), is a lot cheaper (50k £) and still matches the time of the Ferrari.
Not to mention the Porsche is far more reliable and cheaper to maintain...
They didn’t show any driver mistakes during the GT3 lap while the CS lap had a driver mistake in it and still had the same time as a clean run. If they did a perfectly clean lap with the Ferrari it probably would be a few tenths faster.
actually, it's really not any cheaper to run on the road. the difference is marginal.
Just a 2020 comment coming through. Its been 12 years since this video, and Porsche has beat Ferrari once again lol
488 Pista (7:00.3) vs 911 GT2 RS (6:47.3) Nordschleife 13 SECONDS!!!!

At 2:55 he says that you don't get a radio, but at 7:39 the stig listens to music in it
Dude, He said there was no radio in the Porsche GT3 RS and when the stig listens to the radio hes in the Ferrari 360
***** no! he's defenitely talking about the ferrari. Watch it again from like 2:25 please. You maybe got confused because he said something about the porsches looks a few seconds earlier
He says "You don't get a radio AS STANDARD", which implies that it is available as an option. Clearly, there is a radio there, so they have the optional radio fitted. Simple.
Zebitty i've also thought of that but didn't see the radio. now i saw it, was kinda hard on 360p
You can clearly see a radio at 3:00 . Yes, Zebitty is correct, it is an option.
The noise from that Ferrari though 😍😍😍
That's why Jeremy is the best car reviewer ever. He's spot on about the handling.
The Porsche 911 has such a distinct sound.
Blooper: The Ferrari dosen't have a radio yet the Stig is enjoying some music, huh?
He said you don't get one standard. But I spotted one in the video =]
I think all of the "music" when Stig drives is just edited in rather than actually recorded inside the car.
James Phoenix you dont say :D
Uncertain whether to listen to Jeremy's voice or Boards of Canada's sound
wish they reuploaded this in 720p. I still remember watching this clip the first time and being blown away be these two cars
that smile when he found race button :D
I was for the Porche and could not believe that it was actually just as fast on track as the Ferrari!
Youve gotta love the Boards of Canada backdrop music
The mixture of Geogaddi and GT3 is masterful to this day.
this is my favourite Porsche 911 ever. don't know why I like the 996 GT3 RS more than the 997/991 GT3 RS
Purist appeal along with retro feel and tidy footprint.
Because the 996 looks more unique; it appeals more to automotive enthusiasts.
Love the boards of Canada in top gear
The early days of Top Gear. So educational and honest.
The Porsche is by FAR the most powerful, affordable tree frog shaped supercar ever made. Every single one of them ever make.
I've seen the F430, scuderia and Italia for so long I completely forgot that the Modena even existed.
crazy how much horsepower has changed in 12 years
I'm in love with the GT3. I mean the 991 versions - I quite like the older GT2 models as well, and I'm sure I'll love the new GT2.
Dod your 458, 488 and T8, the F430 and 360 are so stunning xD THE NOISE
Stewart,
Don't be too quick to judge
The 458 has a beautiful roar and let's not took about the king of the roar
. . . The V12 Ferrari TDF.
I'm completely in love with that last naturally aspirated V12 engine.

Man I really miss this era of Ferrari, so much better in my opinion than what they're putting out today
Growing up in the 80's, the 911 was my dream car. I finally can afford one so I drove the 911 turbo. It was slightly used. Beautiful car, but as they say, never meet your heroes. The car felt like a tank, slow and lethargic until those turbos kick in and then it took off like a rocket. I absolutely hated it. Then I test drove a Ferrari, a car I was never that fond of growing up. I fell in love and bought it. Ferrari's have such an intangible feeling that is hard to describe. You feel special when you drive one. The Porsche didn't give me that feeling.
The mistake was driving the turbo. Drive a Carrera and it’s a whole different and very Porsche experience
@@2702simmo definetly!
Such a well put together piece this.
911 GT3 all the way. Looks far more composed, has less aids, just 100% brutally honest mechanical grip
ans a rear wing the size of Texas
Yeah, i also prefer a car with less aids and ebola
2 good cars and the sound of the Ferrari is just so amazing...
"And you have a big button that says 'RACE'!"
I remember watching this episode on Dave so much.
The very definition of chronic is that it happens over and over again, so it's actually impossible to have chronic back ache in one day.
I like the fact that on No other track are they even within a second of each other, Yet here they do the same time? Please, That GT3 should have ate that 360.
I don't understand... Last year Ferrari 360 CS's were 110.000 euro's... Now the cheapest one is 175.000... An average 996 GT3 RS is now 250.000 in Germany... I wish I had some money to invest in stuff like this..
You can get a decent 996 turbo fro less than 30 grand now.
Jochem they are very limited production vehicles geared towards the track, if you want a fully OEM race car straight from the manufacturer this is what you get, it saves you all the hassle of buying either on their stock platform and modifying them for the track.... 996 GT3RS is incredibly rare as well as the challenge stradale.... Both were very reliable cars, Ferrari not as much but still not bad for a earlier Ferrari.
"scaled down version of god" hahaha
He's a one sided heathen!!
Watching this in 2019, the good old times!
Both are absolutely fantastic cars but i would pick the Porsche! Especially the new one is incredible!
Absolutely love the 996gt3rs! I drove one a number of years back, and not driven anything since that matches the unadulterated driving appeal...before the era of electronic nannying driving aids. Good times.
I love donny park, played it on ride 3! My favorite track!
I've never heard Hammond commentate a lap before.
I think the design of the 360 still holds up beautifully to this day. That design is timeless. The Ferrari 360 has been my dream car since it came out when I was a kid. I just hope to God I make enough money one day to afford one 😭
It's aging so well. With the 430 messed with the beautiful lines that call back to the Dino. Stick with the dream! Took me 14 years. Definitely have a large budget for maintenance/repairs, especially if you get a spider.
@@adamantiumknot I totally agree. Yeah it's not anywhere in the foreseeable future at this time. I definitely wouldn't buy one if I wasn't in a financial situation to afford the maintenance. May I ask what kind of work you do that you were able to afford one of these?
@@JacquelineLanceTenor freelance graphic designer. BUT it was more years of saving and making the savings work for me.
Fun fact the gt3 is now sorn with no mot with about 55,000miles on it and the registration on the Ferrari, is now registered to a 2022 ferrari 296 GTB
So glad you put "car" after the word Ferrari and Porsche. If not I would have no idea what type of program Top Gear was.
accurate to microseconds!!!unbelievable!!!
It was accurate to a tenth of a second not to a millionth.
Cool soundtrack as ever. BoC.
The manual gearbox in the Porsche has definitely aged better than the rudimentary f1 gearbox in the Ferrari
Old-school Top Gear never gets old.
I still can't get over the fact that I get to drive this Ferrari almost EVERY DAY! I feel really really lucky now but when i'm inside I forget about it LOL It was love at 1st sight..actually the 1st night I couldn't sleep 'cause I couldn't wait for the morning to come to get back in it :)
Lucky bastard
I'd take the P-Car anyday for a track car over the Ferrari.
MrFunk Proton.
i was 14 when the 360 came out in 99, at 16 i got my license & naturally had my choice of dream car i could never afford between the 911, 360, or diablo. That ferrari sound & the F1 team, made me want a 360 still to this day.. i also got a 360 puzzle that year for xmas & decided i wont open it until i buy one of the cars. now i'm trying to sell my lifted truck & modded wrx & get finances in order to hopefully finally get 16 year old me's dream car 23 years later.. i've watched this episode in the current season, downloaded it (before youtube existed) & watched it probably 35-40 times since.
2:56 Radio isn't standard but you can see it there.. Eyes and Ears, use them as a same time.
omg they literally used the entire Boards of Canada geogadi album for this
How is The Stig listening to music if there is no radio in the Ferrari?
I thought there was at least a radio in it
He said as standard. You can see a radio in it. Look at 2:59
boards of canada in the background, great!
We all had more fun in our track day cars back then. No one looked at times, but we ran bumper to bumper lap after lap at pace and all had smiles. Miss my old 6 GT3
Always loved Porsche. Similar performance, iconic good looks and 50,000 pounds less than the Ferrari. Gotta love it.
I prefer Ferrari but I respect Porsche especially the 918 love that car.
with the ferrari you get so much more, brilliant design, the engine compartment and view through glass, a beautiful v8 that sound fantastic, aluminum body/chassis less corrosion risk, superior suspension geometry, gated manual transmission, and probably many other things. The 911 is also most likely set up close to the maximum potential of the car while the 360 is probably in “safe mode” wheel alignment and can be added a rear wing so it would get faster than the 911 especially on a faster track. however the problem with the 360 is not the buying price but the ownership costs which can be in a different league even if lower than of other ferrari models.
And you have a big button that says, "RACE".... :D
the porche now is like 300hp or 400hp and it can beat a car that is 800hp like the dodge demon srt or something else. But keep in mind porche is german magic
Finally, someone who knows what Auto Union is! I'm from the Horch family and always happy find someone who knows what the rings on an Audi stand for!
LOL Hammond looks so young here.
They all do
The 360 still looks amazing today, unlike the 456.
