I really appreciate your comment on using an equalizer. I carry things for self defense and have heard people tell me they "could take me in a fair fight." While completely ignoring the fact that they are 6'2" and I'm 5'5". Certainly sounds fair to me...

I have worked with public (and private) security almost my entire life. There was a time when I carried brass knuckles. It's made of aluminum and I made a foam lining on the grip so it wouldn't hurt my hand.
But after I discovered and learned how to use Kubotan, I preferred this "equalizer" instead of brass knuckles. I found it lighter, more effective and more concealed.

    • @pharaohsmagician8329
      @pharaohsmagician8329 Місяць тому

Why is it more effective? I'd love to know. I'm a smaller person and looking at it, brass knuckles and boxing classes seem like a much better self defense tool than kubaton and boxing. Maybe if you're bigger and can already fight just barehanded and feel confident taking people on then yeah a kubaton applied with precision is good. But a solid punch with brass knuckles, isn't that even better? I suppose you also need to take into account and measure how strong your own attacks are because you work in security and can't go all wham etc taking people out and hospitalized etc but for a random civilian like me, I'd love to know why you think Kubaton is better.
I also considered collapsible batons. I read up on Monkey fist and Kubatons though.

@@pharaohsmagician8329 Friend, I wasn't born knowing how to use Kubotan! Every defense weapon (or tool) must be learned to use correctly and effectively! If you feel confident and comfortable with brass knuckles, good for you. I didn't say Kubotan was better! I wrote that it was better for me!

Brass knuckles are illegal in my state, but any length knife is legal, as are constitutional carry firearms. I agree that street fights are not fair; they are survival. Your points are reality based, in my opinion. Many people take their ideas from TV or movies. There is nothing more uncertain than fighting, but it took me a long time to realize this.

Another GREAT video! YOu nailed it when talking about "nothing beats a firearm/knife etc"! DISTANCE and TIMING is KEY! Many a "martial artist" have made the statement that what they feared most were CLOSE attackers in a confined space with a knife! Furthermore You read my mind when You introduced the LARGE comfortable knuckles. I have HUGE hands and often thought I would have to custom make My knuckles. Finally Revolvers still have a place in that they can fire when pressed up against something or they are still in a pocket!! I,am a humble man however I grew up in and around DETROIT in the 60,s and 70,s I have seen a lot of People eat pavement. The first time I saw a Man killed I was 16 He was shot 8 times with a .45 auto at point blank range. That My friend was a HUGE learning experience for me. Good video as usual...:) Using brass knuckles or other striking implement is a complicated subject. You exposed the major myths. I'm an older guy (I'll be 66 in a couple of months.). I grew up near the Mexican border. When I was younger and had to deal with violence I used all kinds of striking implements from a rock in my hand to a piece of cord that I used as a whip. Then and now the striking implement had to be quick to deploy, easy to conceal, and effective. Brass knuckles that fit your hand but can also be carried in a pocket without drawing attention can be an effective tool. As you said you need to know your local laws so that you can make the individual decision to either carry legally or carry illegally because we all know criminals do not obey laws. Sometimes carrying illegally for a short period trumps not being having a tool to defend ourselves. FYI - I liked the single knuckle/pocket stick type tool you showed so much I had to order one...:) Some people will never experience the fear of riding public transportation late at night or having to walk after a long day of work in dangerous parts of the country. Most of those people will criticize people like me for carrying a tool(knife, firearm, striking implement, etc.). I know from experience it's better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. In some situations no matter how peaceful you are there are those who will see you as a target. Keep up the great work.

In Texas, I once read that while it is totally legal to carry, it becomes a deadly weapon in court , just like a vehicle in a DWI car wreck. Also, as to the gun fight myth. When I was way younger I went in a drug house alone to rescue a girl who was being drugged and raped, and while the dealers were armed, they did not want to try me because I had a hatchet in my belt. Just by carrying a weapon doesn't mean it has to be used to be effective. Thanks for the video and the useful links.

    Thanks for the video.
I can't offer a myth, but I can offer you my paranoia. I'm terrified that if I hit someone with knuckles, I'll hit at the wrong angle. When that happens, the knuckles will twist in my hand. I'm not saying that the knuckles will deform. I'm sure that they will remain in perfect structural integrity. I'm saying I'm afraid that they will turn in a way that will twist and put high stresses on my fingers. I fear that I'm going to break at least one or two fingers. I can see where holding them in the grip that you prefer should reduce that likelihood. I can see where you get them perfectly aligned with your lower arm so that all of the stress should transfer through the knuckles into the palm of your hand and to the solid bone structure of your arms. I'm just worried that I would not maintain that grip in a real situation.
With my health issues, I have limited time to train. Even if I hold the knuckles correctly, I don't know whether I'd land a punch in a real fight. At my age, physical health, and lack of speed that has always defined me, I'm not sure whether knuckles will always be most effective for me. I believe that I need to train at least a little bit on firearms. I train a bit with my cane. I think I might be better off spending any additional training time learning to use a small flashlight to solidify my fist or to use in a hammerfist strike.
How much training do you think most people would need to use knuckles effectively in a real fight? How much time to reach a proficiency level? How much ongoing practice do you think is needed to maintain those skills? If you don't mind answering, how much time per week do you spend specifically on knuckles training?
I'm intrigued by the use of Type 304 stainless steel for this application. Generally, the 400 series stainless steels are less expensive because they don't have as much nickel. I've forgotten all of the 400-series designations. One designation has about sixteen percent chromium, so it would be close to Type 304 SS in direct rust resistance. Forgetting is embarrassing because I used this type of stainless steel in my first master's degree. Maybe its'a Type 430 stainless steel. The 300 series stainless steels are going to be less magnetic or completely non-magnetic because they retain the austenite grain structure. I'm not sure that these properties would have any relevance to knuckles.
I have a single knuckle device with a flat edge for scraping ice from a windshield. I wouldn't want to hit anyone with it, but it can be handy to carry for scraping unexpected ice.

I think my state’s statutes prohibit “metal” knuckles, along with black jacks and bludgeons. These weapons seem to have acquired the bad rap of being associated with the “classic period” mobster and thug. Wouldn’t be surprised that said prohibitions wouldn’t be a violation of the 2A even as state laws have kept them from being considered commonly used. Like anything, they require training to use or they’re going to be just as dangerous to the defender.

I see it as an equalizer.
Nobody wants to hold the perpetrator accountable for going out of there way to bully or threaten anyone. (Especially when the potential victim is far smaller and never went looking for problem's to begin with).
Why is it considered cowardice when the victim feels the need to bust out an equalizer in return?
You're going to shun him for doing so?
But you won't call out the brute aggressor for choosing to try it on a smaller civilian, just because he intentionally chose the smaller target?
    Makes no sense. 🤷‍♂️
I say the perpetrator is the coward in that debate.

Yeah coward goes home, you go to the hospital or 6 foot deep. How much is a label worth? Is using night vision goggle against dudes in sandles holding AKs cowardly? If having unfair advantage is cowardly then that means entire US military is cowardly. Street fighting is personal Warfare. Try your best to avoid, but make sure you win if you get into it. But win or lose there will be consequences.
