I am 55 and my first exposure to Carlin was when Class Clown came out, my parents owned it and I would listen to it over and over when they were not home, which was most of the time....I miss him terribly...that album got me through a period of witnessing egregious domestic violence at home between my step mom and father when divorce was NOT socially acceptable, making me ostracized at school too...rough time made less so by Carlin's ability to just take me elsewhere, ya know?
I am too damaged to be able to debate whether humans are this way because everyone is also too traumatized or the ones who were blessed with easy upbringings and given everything on a plate screwed us all. I consider you FUCKING lucky! I only learned of George around 2012, after watching Dogma, and then I discovered a brilliant satirist and kindred spirit, my kind of people. Too late. I wish back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, when the Cold War kind of ended, instead of Santa Barbara and other crap, the Russian TV had purchased recordings of Carlin's performances. With people who have something to tell and experience booms of creativity it is best to just let them flow. Normally never challenging your guest as an interviewer is being a bad interviewer though. But I guess it is not that kind of interview.

Deep down i think he wanted us to laugh at him less and, instead, stand up and say, "Hey you're right! What the fuck is wrong with us? Lets do something about all the fucked up shit we indifferently allow to persist while we focus so intently on ourselves."

I do agree with you. I am from Shreveport Louisiana and George Carlin was in the Airforce for a short while at Barksdale Airforce Base outside of Shreveport in Bossier City.
Which is why UA-cam (and such) is so great. All these people who didn't get to grow up watching him on television are discovering him here and he is living on inspiring another generation.
George was a very intelligent, amazing comedian. He spawned generations and made people think how fucked everything was at that point in time. Its was genius how he put it all together. There will never be another. He was a total original and will be missed.
He was an 8th grade genius with a command of the english language like no other. You're correct in describing this interview as a "matserpiece of self explanation." Sonny Fox did an outstanding job conducting this interview.

I'm so glad that I was able to see George Carlin live in the 1980s with my dad. We didn't have the best seats in the house but we both pissed our pants laughing the entire show.
Was he always in the best position to judge? The drugs, the shattered relationships, the weaponising of comedy that he epitomises. "Muhammad Ali wanted to beat people up.../ if you don't go to kill people (in Vietnam) then we're not going to let you beat people up" that's quite a funny statement, when he puts it like that. But it's not a joke - it has the element of surprise, for pleasurable anxiety, the relief of laughter. But that sort of thing is a weakness into the world of real humour, even rebellious, ruder humour, for the politician, for free lance pundits like George Carlin to take over. I realized this is similar to a modern day podcast format, but filmed many years ago, pretty incredible. I discovered George Carlin and his comedy recently, and I haven't been able to stop binge watching him and all the amazing work he's done. It's insane to me how relevant and applicable almost EVERYTHING he ever said is to today's world. He was such well educated and well spoken person, and he definitely did his research when it came to writing his comedy because of all the tiny details he mentions that a lot of people don't notice. I'm so grateful for his existance and thank God we have the power of the internet so we may never forget about great people like him.
You only just discovered Carlin recently? How old are you? 10? Ever heard of Elvis? Ali? Michael Jordan? The Beatles? I seriously doubt that George ever had to 'research' anything. He was a genius. Comedians in courts have always had that role really, no one could speak bluntly to the king, and say for example that the king did something wrong or something of that kind. But the comedian could make a joke about it, and then the king could receive the information without having to kill the guy for being ''irreverent'' towards the authority of the king. Because after all, it was just a joke, right? That's why I hate when comedians say (to get out of trouble) that ''it's just a joke, just a show, nothing of this is real''. Of course it is, otherwise it would not be interesting, and certainly it would not be funny. So today they make a funny joke about feminism/women, then they hide behind and say it's all made up, just a joke, but we know it isn't.
Only a few things in my life where I actually remember where I was when I heard he the news. His passing was one of them. Not sure why or the reason it's only a handful of events that I can clearly remember, but it is. Maybe it's a similar way of thinking, or realization (and repsect) of words having meaning, the silliness of politics, racism, and a need for political correctness, but whatever it is obviously he and his ideas, thoughts, and grievances (see what I did there) have shaped me as I grew up. I turned 21 years old on October 17th in 2001 (just 5 weeks after 9/11) So as most turning 21 living in So CA do, I go to Vegas with a friend (that was of age) and some family. This was all completely unplanned, and I had no knowledge of him even being there, but when we showed up and pulled into town (on the 16th) we see on a huge neon sign GEORGE CARLIN @ MGM GRAND 10/17 !!! Obviously sold out by now, or waaaay too expensive, probably both. But we go out that night and at midnight start to gamble, blackjack.. By 3am myself, my buddy, and my mom had all won $300-$500 each. So now I'm thinking, it's prob sold out but let's try to get these tickets. We show up at the MGM at like 930am as ticket booth opened at 10. They open we ask, and the lady said, I'm sorry but unfortunately all the seats have been sold. Bummed but what we somewhat expected I say, are you sure, and my buddy adds in "its his 21st bday". She says, yeah, I'm sorry, all seats are sold out. We start to walk away and get about 10 paces away when she calls out for us. She say "so I wasn't even aware of this, and I just looked, but apparently we have 2 tickets available in the sound/light area (like a bullpen at a baseball field) but they're just chairs, no table, no drink service, just 2 chairs. "We'll take em..!!" Needless to say, BEST FKN SEATS IN THE HOUSE..!! And if I remember correctly the tickets were only like $70. No need for a table, and a little flask with a soda was all we needed. ...there was also a lingerie convention in town that weekend, but that's another story. Saw him only once live, but I'm proud and happy to say I was able to. The way it all unfolded and happened was crazy lucky though looking back
I never sit still and watch things like this but I watched the entire show and loved every minute of it. And great applause to the interviewer who asked great questions ss did the audience, and he let him speak uninterrupted!
Agreed, I get so annoyed with interviewers that have to chime in constantly with a "mhmmm" or a "yea", or with their little side stories. It is so distracting, and disrespectful (even if by accident). I noticed this interviewer doesn't even nod silently in agreement, he simply lets Carlin tell his stories. Definitely an undervalued skill, to which this interviewer did a wonderful job.

I've discovered a comedy of George shortly after he died, I'm originally from Ukraine but I know English very well and live in UK. I can say few things about George - he's tremendous character, intelligent, got great speech skills and use of language, and the best comedian of all times in my view. And to sum the thing up, I think his profession was - GENIUS!
Great interviewer. Asked a question and sat back. And of course Mr. Carlin did the rest. This was a great interview of a great American Artist and I really enjoyed listening. George is now dead, but we have the opportunity to listen to and enjoy his work. And so he lives on.
Even if he didn't do comedy, I could just listen to George Carlin talk......He had that wonderful radio speaking voice, and what a great story teller.....Of all the comics who have passed, I miss him most of all.....
He lived 1 year and 1 month more after this. This interview was april 2007. Best comedian on the social, linguistic, spiritual, political and religious subjects. . Last HBO special "Its Bad For Ya" was on 1 st of March 2008, televised live and he died few months later, 22 June 2008.
And then he died just more than a year later. I recall seeing his obit in the newspaper in 2007. What a genius he was, and one-of-a-kind. God love ya George. We miss you.

Everything Carlin said was the truth, and his view of the US was dead on. He was something of a prophet, as well as a brilliant man, who cut straight through the BS in a way that made you both think and laugh your @$$ off. I wonder what he would think about America today? There will never be another like him.

I was a fan since FM & AM came out. He was, without a doubt, the greatest comedian ever. The shear volume of material is amazing. No one comes close. He was brilliant.
I had the privilege of appearing on television with George Carlin in 1976 (Chuck Barris Rah Rah Show episode #1). He came on stage and for 3 or 4 minutes said absolutely nothing. Brilliant!

I love the way Carlin could talk about himself without sounding the least bit self-centered. Also, kudos to Sonny Fox, who could teach reams to bigger names than himself about the art of interviewing.
My first exposure to George Carlin was in 1994 on his HBO special; I was 4 years old. I convinced my mom that if I could listen to her cuss and know not to repeat it, then I could listen to him. It was the best thing she ever did for me. I would have asked him what it was noticed that made him realize we had owners.
I'd wager it was a mix of bullshit schooling, dishonest politics, and seeing how his parents navigated their world. But we will never know probably. A great man with great insight.
How have I gone 59 years without fully appreciating this amazing guy? Better late than never. I hope lots of young people watch this and listen carefully. He bridged ages and was a lively part of the culture throughout.
Listening to him today is fresh. Its like he is still here with us. I thought I was the only one who didn't give a shit until I discovered this great. He liked jazz 🎶 too.

I live in the U.K. & I had never heard of George till last week when I was watching UA-cam videos of old American comedians. It's surprising how unknown he is here because I reckon his comedy would have been very appreciated in the U.K.

The saddest part of George Carlin's legacy are the people who clapped, and laughed, but were still ignorantly asleep to what's going on in the world.

I wish back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, when the Cold War kind of ended, instead of Santa Barbara and other crap, the Russian TV had purchased recordings of Carlin's performances. Then my people would know that not all Americans are brainwashed idiots, clinically incapable of critical thinking. I do agree with you. I am from Shreveport Louisiana and George Carlin was in the Airforce for a short while at Barksdale Airforce Base outside of Shreveport in Bossier City.

I realized this is similar to a modern day podcast format, but filmed many years ago, pretty incredible. I discovered George Carlin and his comedy recently, and I haven't been able to stop binge watching him and all the amazing work he's done. It's insane to me how relevant and applicable almost EVERYTHING he ever said is to today's world. He was such well educated and well spoken person, and he definitely did his research when it came to writing his comedy because of all the tiny details he mentions that a lot of people don't notice. I'm so grateful for his existance and thank God we have the power of the internet so we may never forget about great people like him.

Comedians in courts have always had that role really, no one could speak bluntly to the king, and say for example that the king did something wrong or something of that kind. But the comedian could make a joke about it, and then the king could receive the information without having to kill the guy for being ''irreverent'' towards the authority of the king. Because after all, it was just a joke, right?
That's why I hate when comedians say (to get out of trouble) that ''it's just a joke, just a show, nothing of this is real''. Of course it is, otherwise it would not be interesting, and certainly it would not be funny. So today they make a funny joke about feminism/women, then they hide behind and say it's all made up, just a joke, but we know it isn't.

Only a few things in my life where I actually remember where I was when I heard he the news. His passing was one of them. Not sure why or the reason it's only a handful of events that I can clearly remember, but it is. Maybe it's a similar way of thinking, or realization (and repsect) of words having meaning, the silliness of politics, racism, and a need for political correctness, but whatever it is obviously he and his ideas, thoughts, and grievances (see what I did there) have shaped me as I grew up.
I turned 21 years old on October 17th in 2001 (just 5 weeks after 9/11) So as most turning 21 living in So CA do, I go to Vegas with a friend (that was of age) and some family. This was all completely unplanned, and I had no knowledge of him even being there, but when we showed up and pulled into town (on the 16th) we see on a huge neon sign GEORGE CARLIN @ MGM GRAND 10/17 !!! Obviously sold out by now, or waaaay too expensive, probably both. But we go out that night and at midnight start to gamble, blackjack.. By 3am myself, my buddy, and my mom had all won $300-$500 each. So now I'm thinking, it's prob sold out but let's try to get these tickets. We show up at the MGM at like 930am as ticket booth opened at 10. They open we ask, and the lady said, I'm sorry but unfortunately all the seats have been sold. Bummed but what we somewhat expected I say, are you sure, and my buddy adds in "its his 21st bday". She says, yeah, I'm sorry, all seats are sold out. We start to walk away and get about 10 paces away when she calls out for us. She say "so I wasn't even aware of this, and I just looked, but apparently we have 2 tickets available in the sound/light area (like a bullpen at a baseball field) but they're just chairs, no table, no drink service, just 2 chairs. "We'll take em..!!" Needless to say, BEST FKN SEATS IN THE HOUSE..!! And if I remember correctly the tickets were only like $70. No need for a table, and a little flask with a soda was all we needed.
...there was also a lingerie convention in town that weekend, but that's another story. Saw him only once live, but I'm proud and happy to say I was able to. The way it all unfolded and happened was crazy lucky though looking back

I never sit still and watch things like this but I watched the entire show and loved every minute of it. And great applause to the interviewer who asked great questions ss did the audience, and he let him speak uninterrupted!
Agreed, I get so annoyed with interviewers that have to chime in constantly with a "mhmmm" or a "yea", or with their little side stories. It is so distracting, and disrespectful (even if by accident). I noticed this interviewer doesn't even nod silently in agreement, he simply lets Carlin tell his stories. Definitely an undervalued skill, to which this interviewer did a wonderful job.

I've discovered a comedy of George shortly after he died, I'm originally from Ukraine but I know English very well and live in UK. I can say few things about George - he's tremendous character, intelligent, got great speech skills and use of language, and the best comedian of all times in my view. Great interviewer. Asked a question and sat back. And of course Mr. Carlin did the rest. This was a great interview of a great American Artist and I really enjoyed listening. George is now dead, but we have the opportunity to listen to and enjoy his work. And so he lives on.
Even if he didn't do comedy, I could just listen to George Carlin talk......He had that wonderful radio speaking voice, and what a great story teller.....Of all the comics who have passed, I miss him most of all.....

I was a fan since FM & AM came out. He was, without a doubt, the greatest comedian ever. The shear volume of material is amazing. No one comes close. He was brilliant.
When I was 11 on early youtube, I came across some George Carlin clips while on a stand-up comic binge and those 45 minutes changed my life.
I had the privilege of appearing on television with George Carlin in 1976 (Chuck Barris Rah Rah Show episode #1).
He came on stage and for 3 or 4 minutes said absolutely nothing. Brilliant!

My first exposure to George Carlin was in 1994 on his HBO special; I was 4 years old. I convinced my mom that if I could listen to her cuss and know not to repeat it, then I could listen to him. It was the best thing she ever did for me. I would have asked him what it was noticed that made him realize we had owners.
I'd wager it was a mix of bullshit schooling, dishonest politics, and seeing how his parents navigated their world. But we will never know probably. A great man with great insight.

How have I gone 59 years without fully appreciating this amazing guy? Better late than never. I hope lots of young people watch this and listen carefully. He bridged ages and was a lively part of the culture throughout.

Listening to him today is fresh. Its like he is still here with us. I thought I was the only one who didn't give a shit until I discovered this great. He liked jazz 🎶 too.
The title is soo ironic now that its 2020. GC is one of the only comics that really stood the test of time.. thankful for many years of entertainment
It's scary to think about how close he was to his death but also realize how alive and sharp and on point he was. I really regret not seeing him live. RIP George. There will never be a comedian who has a larger impact on the world.
I totally agree. George Carlin had a depth that no comic has ever approached. And though he wasn't "college-educated," he was an intellectual, without a doubt.

I live in the U.K. & I had never heard of George till last week when I was watching UA-cam videos of old American comedians. It's surprising how unknown he is here because I reckon his comedy would have been very appreciated in the U.K.
I miss mr Carlin. My entire life he was there. I'm 52 now. I still remember listening to 7 words.
He is my hero.
His 4 gold albums came out during my high school years.
He was so brilliant and had the exact same philosophy as I. What a smart, cool dude he was, I miss him.

IMO, one of the most important people to have lived and certainly of our recent generations. His comedy was indeed comedy but social commentary for those who have ears to hear. Thank you for posting this!
