"You Never Know" Dave Matthews Band // musical analysis

- Опубліковано 25 жов 2021
- This musical analysis of DMB's song "You Never Know" was commissioned by my Patron Travis Hyde! This video uses some music theory concepts to study the harmony, melody, rhythms, and structure, but the intention is to explore the emotional impact of the narrative supported by the music. Hope you enjoy, Travis! (and if you are not Travis and stumbled upon this video, I hope you enjoy it too!)

I've been trying to play this song ever since middle school. Dave is THE reason why I picked up my first instrument and I've been playing DMB for like 20 years now.
BUT even 20 years later, it took your video to make me realize how incredibly beautiful that 'every fire dies' part is. I'm blown away by you, subscribing to everything and anything you do. Hope you do more DMB in the future too
Carter Beauford is one of the best drummers alive.
He’s a god among drummers.
False. He IS the best
Yes!
Double Correction. Carter Beauford IS the best drummer WHO HAS EVER BEEN alive.

This video changed my musical life. I have never found anyone break down Dave's music like you do. I will be contacting you about how to get more break downs of his songs done.
I'm happy you got so much value from the video, means a lot to me and I'm sure to Travis too, who invested a lot to have it made! I am unfortunately not available for commissions at this time, but you are invited to check out my main channel. If the music choices there aren't your style, no hard feelings :) ua-cam.com/users/iximusic
About 10 seconds into this video, I realized there was no going back. I am riding this to the end. Thank you!
What a great song for your first breakdown of a DMB song…
I would to see you fall in love with this band as so many of us have… for exactly all the reasons/elements you picked up on 💟 thank you
This is the best breakdown of what the Dave Matthews Band sound is.....
*Been a fan since 1993.
I can’t believe I watched the whole thing. Incredible video. More of this please; I’d watch every DMB breakdown you would ever do.
A big wow to you for this spectacular analysis. Ive been a dmb fan for 26 yrs now and have listened to this song a million times never realizing it's so musically ambitious and artistic. Im sure Dave never planned it that way, it just comes second nature to him I guess. I enjoyed your analysis of the tune so much, thanks a lot for your effort.
The most amazing breakdown and analysis of a Dave Matthews Band song I have ever seen. The musical nuance and the way it hits your being is what makes some so engrossed in his catalogue. Aced this video! Berkeley here we come!
47 mins later I’m still here… she got me
One of the greatest songs ever written. It doesn’t get much better than You Never Know
Came from Reddit - put this video on and was then delayed in getting out of bed for 47 minutes. Incredible analysis
Your analysis is great but I also want to say I love your piano playing and would love your piano rendition of this song to listen to
The first thing I did with this song was count out the time in each section. Also, what you'll find about Dave, and Carter even says this about when he first heard Dave's songs was they don't necessarily follow "the rules."
Amazing analysis. DMB has had a huge impact on me as a musician. Arguably the largest influence. "You Never Know" is certainly one of my all time favorite songs of all time.
You've most definitely scored yet another fan in me. Thank you so much!
What an interesting video. Seeing DMB live more times than I can count I am always blown away by their individual talents all coming together so wonderfully.
incredible professional analysis. DMB is something from another planet ! nobody do analysis of their music because they are so unique and exceptional. The bassist and the drummer are really good !
What a sensational video!
The crazy thing about this song is that, according to producer Stephen Harris, the band wrote it and recorded it in one day.
What an absolutely incredible analysis. I’m a gigantic DMB fan and this has been a song demanding closer attention for two decades now. Thank you for this! You really know your stuff!
If you care for some more awesome DMB deep tracks, check out:
The Stone (F major heaven)
Dreaming Tree (Stefan’s ultimate showcase… the best bass in their whole catalogue)
Captain (minor minor minor A MAJOR minor)
Really just the entirety of both Before These Crowded Streets and Busted Stuff. Two of the best front to back records in existence (the Lilywhite sessions would beat out busted stuff if not for You Never Know)
What I wouldn’t give for a completed studio cut / live version of Monkey Man.
Had LWS been completed, it may well have been their best studio effort. That Captain is leaps and bounds better than what we got off Busted Stuff (and that’s not to mean that the Busted Stuff version is bad - just so much more emotion and soul in the LWS cut).
Awesome analysis
Ive seen certain bands be exceptional at certain things, but live i have never come close to seeing one so consistently flexible with the ability to peak multiple times in a set. Every song is fair game in terms of someone stepping up with a new idea in a live performance.
im still going through this but this is absolutely stunning and incredible
The drums are so good in this song. Add in that unique tuning Dave uses on the guitar, it's such a beautiful song.
I love how you focus on Roi’s sax lines just as coherently as Dave’s melodies (even if you show the replacement sax player at the time heh). I feel like they’re often relegated to “solo noodling” but part of why he was so good is that the notes he played always had such intentionality.
You mention memorizing the sax parts and being able to sing along and it really does feel Ike that. Instrument as voice. So powerful.
This woman is very smart and I dig this. Thank you for sharing ☺️
As Dave once famously said when recording the song that was eventually named Seven (most of which is in 7/8)… “I thought this was 4”
I have a ton of thoughts to discuss next session, but I am 1000% in agreement about that 9th being so incredibly satisfying. Thank you so much for this, this is so awesome.
Thank you so much for this. The best hour of my day. Going to sleep very happy. Thank you.
Such a pleasure to watch one of my favorite songs broken down like this
Busted Stuff was my first Dave Matthews album, and so I hold it in special regard.
This is the coolest thing that I've ever heard that I have absolutely no understanding of (almost) whatsoever! Can you do 45 minutes on why "I worried if I looked away she'd be gone" is the sweetest lyric ever?
I loved this video! So very special. Please do more Dave. Maybe “Seek Up”
This is an amazing DMB track!! They have 100+ tunes worth checking out, but this is amongst my favorites! Also, anything off “Before These Crowded Streets” is a must to check out. It’s their most mature & complete album & shows a band firing on all cylinders!
I adore your musical knowledge and concise breakdown. Much Respect.!
That was awesome. Thanks
Yes! Fantastic song!
Great! Thank you!
Awesome! U are my hero like Dave.
I’m lucky enough to have seen this song live and it’s become a favorite of mine. I appreciate it even more now thanks to this analysis.
Same here! Nearly 20 years later and I caught this live at SPAC. So much occurring in my life right now (Kids, job, ect) Hearing this song live at that moment... was appropriate. Very well done on the analysis!
Really deep and detailed and thanks for this - happy to be your 100 subscriber 🙏🇿🇦
Wow, thank you for such an in depth and well thought through perspective on this masterpiece.
Absolutely loved this analysis. A perfect mix of head and heart, and I will forever listen/appreciate this song in a deeper way. Thank you, ixi!
Thank you for making this
This is one of my favorite songs and it’s awesome to hear your appreciation of it and to gain an insight into why I like it so much.
Love your analysis! This is one of my favorites by DMB too!
I love this video. Such an off-favorite DMB song to select for the breakdown, but which is such a great example of incredibly common tones and tropes that are extremely DMB. As a fan of the band since the Crash Days, I love that these themes have held true even throughout the coming and going of some drastically different members.
I love everything about this video. All I can really say is thank you for it.
The way you break it all down in all its different facets quite truly is a special gift.
Beautiful thorough analysis! Please keep em going! You Never Know is a wonderful song, from a wonderful band
Such a great analysis. She knows her stuff!
Great analysis, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Loved this song for many years !
I'm on my third time watching this video. It makes me fall more in love with this spectacular and epic song. Beyond amazing. Gorge 2023 here I come.
Incredible video
I’d love to see you performing the song all the way through via your lens and touch on it. I bet it would be amazing.
How do you only have 25k subscribers on your main channel when you're doing stuff like this?! I have to get more people watching you.
This song has a particularly strong connection to me because it debuted in Boston in Spring 2002, night 1 - all the way back when I was in high school! I remember waking up the next day and downloading it from the now defunct forum Anyone Seen The Bridge, and it had been a particularly difficult previous day (my mom had started to go completely blind around this time in my life) so I just remember downloading it to my MP3 player to listen to on the bus to school, and having to hold back tears the entire ride. I went to the show that next day in Boston, where they unfortunately didn't play it. I had to wait until the following July to hear it in person, where I - again - had to fight back tears. It still reminds me of my mom every time I hear it. I lost her a couple years ago, so hearing that this may be about Dave's father (something I'd never even thought about as a long-time fan) just makes me feel that much more connected to this song.
Thanks for doing this one, I really loved this video.
Ha youtube is crazy. That was my first ever DMB show. I still reminisce about it!
Amazing! Do more DMB
Not only his father, but research his sister’s death in South Africa. Rather being related directly to specific people, always felt it’s just life versus death in general. Dave (like most people), has been through it.
“Every fire dies” while it sounds very mournful it also sounds.. like acceptance?
Awesome! More dave please! The Stone would be great!
Gorgeous song. One of their best. Listen to a 2021 tour version.
👏👏👏👏👏 thank you for this!! Dave Matthews is a lyrical genius and DMB is the BOWA.
ixi, I really appreciate this analysis. This is one of DMB’s strongest studio efforts, and I really like your observation of the parts getting shorter and shorter, simulating the passage of time and life.
Really cool observation of Dave’s vocal performance in the Bridge section. He uses his voice as an instrument remarkably well. And you nailed it - Stefan and Carter are two of the most underrated musicians in rock.
Curious, were you a DMB fan before this recommendation? If not, have you ventured into any more of their catalog?
I'm glad you enjoyed it! No I'd only heard a few radio hits before this analysis. I've got a pretty full plate right now but I may explore a bit more one day...you never know ;)
@@iximusicPATREON You can’t go wrong with any of the first three albums, but Before These Crowded Streets is a perfect album. It’s an absolutely beautiful studio session.

How do you make it so interesting and understandable that even though I know nothing about music I watched every second lol 👍🏻🙏
this is my favorite rabbit hole I've fallen down since sourdough bread
Great analysis and video, I can get about 1% of your insight from playing the guitar casually, but I wish i could hear and understand things like you.
...just keep playing and never stop
A brilliant and beautiful analysis, how you don’t have more subscribers I don’t understand, good luck to you.

This song doesn't get enough traction among the many dmb songs, but it is very interesting. It's very different, it's one of the first things you'll notice about it. I heard it in Cincinnati this year.
As to your comments on whether the E was major or minor in the chorus - it was originally played live as an unresolved but implied major. Recently (I'm not sure when exactly) they've begun to resolve it as a minor. I always preferred the major implication which made it seem even more interesting. Check out the unresolved but implied E major on this older live recording. It's crazy how much it changed the feel of the song ua-cam.com/video/C6h4SKYmEVE/v-deo.html
Ah thank you! It still surprises me that all it takes is a tiny half step to change a whole song.
Dave has tuned one of his acoustic guitars UP a 5th (to B), just like his baritone (1-b 2-f# 3-d 4-a 5-e 6-b) but an octive higher
... I see you ☝🏽💜
@@Humble.Monkey what is the you you see in me?
….Siting up in my tree again
Out of the darkness is definitely the best part
IT IS!
This video is amazing. I am a long time DMB fan and have always loved this song, but now i love it even more. Have you become more interested in DMB's music, based on your work to create this video? It seems like there are parts of this song that really impress you and you seem to really like it. I think there is a lot more where that came from. Just wondering what your interest level is now, in the band and in Dave's writing.
Also, do you think that as a musician Dave was thinking about all the things you commented on and found during your analysis, when writing the music? Do musicians have to actively go through the process that you went through to analyze the music while writing, or does it just come naturally to them and then good music happens to lend itself to this kind of in depth analysis after the fact? Not sure if my question totally makes sense. I'm just wondering if musicians are thinking of all the things you analyzed as they write the song.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Re: your very interesting question, I know a musician or two that do have music theory in mind when they write songs but I think most of the time writing music is a more about instinct. More often than not, songwriters are following tension and release intuitively, the same way you and I know how to speak and write in English without having to construct every sentence from scratch. It just flows, because we're fluent. Same with music a lot of the time. Getting too analytical when you're creating can be counterproductive. I don't think about music that way when I write. The way I see it, music theory is one language that can be used to describe music afterward and explain why certain things "work" or feel this way or that.
If you like their recorded stuff, then you’ll really love their live stuff
He was raised a Quaker and I believe this influenced his sound. Very cool! Thanks for your analysis of Dave. I flew across country to see him at the Gorge. There is no other band like them!
I think you could have big success in breaking down dmb songs
This chorus is just a b7, 4, 1, 5 progression. It’s incredibly common in gospel music.
Please break down live a version of Dave Matthew's Band please the live music is so different than their studio work.
Please do Crash into Me
Dave uses sus chords all the time, and uses major/minor chords for chorus, especially his early stuff. He never used to play in easy guitar keys E A etc very often. Great analysis
Try and analyze Big Eyed Fish?
Its Carter BEAU-ford but great breakdown nonetheless
Thanks!
There’s 1000% chords being applied. My gosh. 😂 do you need a breakdown of what the verse chords are?
FYI, Carter pronounces it “bow-ford”, not “byoo-ford”. Also, Dave has had no musical training. He doesn't even really know what keys he writes his music in. If he needs to know, he'll ask Tim Reynolds.
Thanks for the correction!
