100%, i wanted to borrow a tap of the misfits from my sisters boyfriend. and it was good. I played the other side and it was I should Coco. first song on deck was I like to know and my mind was blown. ps im canadian so the only bands that really crossed the pond was blur, oasis and pulp. so this was magical to me

For all of Oasis's tedious proclamations about them being the next Beatles, it was Supergrass (and Blur) who really embodied the Fab Four's widescreen vision and open-ended approach to creating music.
Alongside The Boo Radleys and the Super Furry Animals, Supergrass were the wonderful shining diamonds in the pigswill that was Britpop.

First off The Beatles were something of a miracle that have never truly been rivalled. They are unmatched albeit for The Beach Boys or rather Brian Wilson and furthermore; Britpop was not ''Pigswill'' There is and has always been good music, even Oasis wrote some good music.

      I got lucky.
I moved from Houston to Phoenix in 2000 to live with a friend that just got out of the Army. When I showed up he had two tickets to Pearl Jam/Supergrass like 2 days later. He had no idea Supergrass was in my top two bands at the time either. When he joined the Army we were both still into grunge, but I had switched to Radiohead and Supergrass in that time and he actually moved into Tool and some heavier stuff as well.
      Good times!

Supergrass have been one of my favourite bands for a long time, one of the few bands from that 90s era in the UK, that were consistently good. Really worth checking out all their stuff (and Gaz Coombes solo stuff too). Enjoyed the video. :-)

They were a big part of the soundtrack of life in the 90’s and early 00’s. They got lost in the wave of rock / pop music that exploded out of the UK. For me Supergrass and Super Furry Animals made the most interesting and amazing music. They both had a run of albums that were just miles above the rest. In my humble opinion of course.

I was 15 when Mary was released and I spent a couple of weeks trying to nail the Rhodes part so I could show off to my mates from school. We all went to see Kula Shaker at the Wolverhampton Civic and afterwards we ended up in a pub (totally underage drinking) and there was a piano there. All my mates were going "play Green Onions," but I had Mary up my sleeve! The landlord of the pub came over and I thought he was going to kick us out for being underage - he offered me a job to play piano every week on a sunday!
He must've been a Supergrass fan also.
Bloody love Supergrass. They always scratched an itch that I never knew was itchy...if you know what I mean?
Thank you for a great video. It's always cool to witness someone get into it..especially when they turn the switch and do things you don't expect.

It’s super enjoyable, watching you feel the way I remember feeling when I first heard this in the 90s. Very nostalgic vibe even back then. And it’s pretty impressive watching you really get it and feel it and understand it. I’ve been listening to these songs thousands of times, and it was nice to kind of go back and have you break it down to remember all the little parts that I’ve neglected to pay attention to since I first discovered them.

I can remember having to pay $30 to get the XRay record imported because they didn’t have a release date for the states yet. I did my best to get as many people into them as I could. An amazing band & for me the best to come out of the UK at that time. Far more interesting than Oasis & better songwriting than Radiohead. My opinion anyway. I gotta tell’s a It’s was great to watched your learned responses to their music. A fellow musician turned me on to them years ago, and I think they are the greatest English band from that period. They balance sophistication and finesse with Rock’n power. I think their pieces are especially moving to other musicians. It was great watching your responses, I could totally relate.

This was so great. Most ‘reaction’ stuff is “I want someone to like the music I already like”, and I’m a sucker for that.
I’m not Supergrass’s number one fan, but I like them. To have someone pull the songs apart a little (musically) is so interesting. To do this in real time and pretty much nail the key, mode and chords is something I’ve never seen before. When you picked out bits of melody you also picked out the feel too. Either the songs are so distinctive the melody delivers the feel, or you’ve picked up the vibe first time.

She's So Loose has that beautiful Phrygian quality in the verse (which you nailed btw!). First time I heard it as a teen I simply had to learn that first chord. Turns out it's an easy one on guitar because it's just the standard F barre shape but with the barre lifted so the top two strings ring out open. This alone opened (pun intended) up a whole new world of chord voicings for me. Also learned so much from Supergrass about modulation and non-diatonic changes, but within a pop structure. Brilliant musicians.
Beautiful People was always a favourite for me too because of how wild its changes are!

Hey there Ixi from Ned in Spain. Thank you for diving deep into one of the finest and under appreciated bands, Supergrass. Gaz on guitar and main vox, Danny on drums, Mick on that fab bass and Gaz's brother Rob on all the keyboards. They all sing. Their method of composing was to combine different song ideas from Gaz and Mick which gives it that tricky "where is it going to next" ? vibe . Gaz and Danny had a band called Jennifers but it wasn't until Mick arrived that their songwriting clicked. Lucky me and the wife got to see them live from their first US tour onwards. Fabulous band. Try the song " Faraway " please.

I bought this album when first released. The worst song on it is the most well known ‘Alright’. I’m 59 yrs old now and I still play it in my car - my son likes them too. I’m in the Uk 🇬🇧 btw.

Supergrass are England's most underrated band . They are still great live which is more than can be said for a lot of bands from that era

  • @danielramondominguezalburq2780

Great songs selection. Im so glad they got back together recently, really hoping they come to Argentina

if i could pick any band to play "lead" bass for any band out there itd be these guys. Id be hurtin the morning after. they attempt to make each song its own little trip to somewhere. Now Writing with them would be even better.

You ask if the comparison yo the Beatles are favorable, In a recent interview when asked about how it felt to be signed at 17, Gaz said he would just so proud it was Parlophone, the Beatles labile the band the grew up on.,

I little bit Beatles, a little bit Radiohead, quite a lot Kinks, if you ask me! (and, like the Kinks, criminally underrated)

I think you would enjoy The Meters, unless you are already acquainted. Still though... Their eponymous debut album.

I don't hear The Beatles in any of their music. Which is probably why I love Supergrass so much.

Try British group called family late 60s 70s great musicians, Roger Chapman falsetto vocals, tracks to hear, my friend the sun, seasons, part of the load, the chase, weavers answer. Many others! You won't regret it! Can hear family in bits of supergrass!

Great band. Worthy of a revival of their own.
I think you might also enjoy at least some *Cardiacs* from your reactions to the more "Cardiacs parts" of the Supergrass songs. (I don't know if they were influenced by them; it's just the way I tend to hear things these days. "How Cardiacs is it?" Monomania strikes again.)
I"ll give you ten "replies", trying to use just covers "made with added loving care" so you can see if they're of any interest to you. (They're not an utterly obscure band, but they're not that well known, either.) It's all major and minor chords, but they don't always do as they're told.

*The Everso Closely Guarded Line* - cover by Paulo Sala. ua-cam.com/video/DtB4tEAesgA/v-deo.html
It's not all the way out to their weird side, but it's heading there. I'll just make the assumption that weirder is more potentially interesting to you.

*Jitterbug - junior is a* - a cappella cover by "the 180 G's" - or possibly just David Minnick all on his lonesome, simulating them. ua-cam.com/video/bmxNKMO2kjA/v-deo.html
(This one is weird. Even David says so in a reply to one of the comments. It apparently arrived one morning to wake Tim Smith up, and then he had no choice but to get out the paper and work on it till it was done - which lasted a solid 36 hours. The lyrics are from English as She is Spoke - a topic all of its own.)

*The Breakfast Line* - just on piano by Zachary Detrick (so unfortunately you miss out on the original violin and maybe cello, but then you get piano, so maybe you'd like that better). ua-cam.com/video/LZqkdiWbgtw/v-deo.html
If you ever did a live reaction (not likely to bring huge numbers of views, but also almost guaranteed to bring at least some views) the place to get the originals is probably their bandcamp site.
(This is fun. Supergrass in the background, with commentary. I know these backwards. Don't need to listen - even if usually it's tempting to do so.)
You might enjoy Zachary's other music. He has a pretty good band. Many of them are somehow involved with the Julliard school, so they know their stuff.

*Dirty Boy* - cover by Joe Parrish James (who would've been playing for Jethro Tull in the Ukraine when the Russians invaded and put a stop to that). ua-cam.com/video/xx15Gr2nRME/v-deo.html
It soars and soars and soars and soars and soars ...
If you enjoy alternative interpretations of classical music, you might enjoy Joe's. He also has a folk metal band of his own, Albion. (His Rite of Spring "cover" has lots of approving comments on it, for starters).

*Anything I Can't Eat* - cover by Roman band *Sterbus* . Original is a fast-paced hard rocker/ maybe even a bit punk, but they do it with what sounds to me like a ukelele, but I can't be sure. ua-cam.com/video/b-6U73cix2A/v-deo.html (Still nice and energetic).
