From personal experience I’d comfortably say that blunted conical bullets give a flatter surface to deliver more stopping power but does take away from the intended penetration. Great video, always a pleasure to watch.
I’m a big fan of the 1858 Remington and have been ever since I watched “pale rider” years ago. I’ve been eying up one of these carbines for awhile, looks like they would be so fun to shoot.
I love mine!!! You get .357/.45 super performance out of a repeating muzzleloader not a bad option. Also it weighs as much as a .22. It’s insanely handy to carry not a bad balance for the woods close range defense. Also that long gun is way way easier to load up. Basically IMO the gun essentially doubles as a loading tool. And the grip is not nearly as awkward as it looks. It actually works pretty well cuz it’s really rear heavy so it balances rather natural. I imagine the original with 24-26” barrels were more awkward???
The guitar that Kurt Russell smashed in The Hateful Eight was an actual antique Martin guitar on loan from Martin Guitar Co. In house museum. They were supposed to say cut and swap the a antique worth about 80k out for a disposable prop guitar. Russell when he didn't hear them call cut assumed that they had already swapped it out for the scene. The dismayed Whoa!! Whoa you hear Jennifer Jason Leah yelling. Is her knowing that the guitar. being beaten to kindling is in fact the real irreplaceable Martin guitar that was a survivor from the time line the movie was set in. It was said when Kurt Russell learned that he had destroyed such a valuable instrument. That he got tears in his eyes.
I been shooting my 1858 Carbine for 9 years, wore out the mainspring, replace it. Replaced the nipples with Slixshot nipple. Removed the loading lever, replace with the quick release. The cylinder is reloaded with a press. I shoot competition with a club using X sticks. Found out that front sight broke loose and the set screw reset with lock tight. It’s extremely accurate at 25 & 50 yards and can place 5 rounds on the 100 yard target, not grouping though. I have the cartridge cylinder but have not used it yet. I place a towel on shoulder so that curved stock does not bruise my shoulder. 😊

I agree about the butt plate. It could stand to be larger as most of us have been trained to keep the butt of the rifle as far into the shoulder as is comfortable. Nevertheless it is very accurate at carbine ranges. It's almost difficult to get a loose group
Great video and a beautiful Remington carbine! I enjoyed seeing the fructose bandit's! I went to Melody Ranch Studios last summer and got to see the cabin they used for the stage depot in the hatefull 8..Arnold Schwarzenegger stays there alot and has his tank parked near by....thanks again
Dustin, it's one of my favorites too. It's funny, you mentioned the exact same issues I had with it, the blowback to the face, and the odd shoulder mounting. I'm not tall like you, for I'm only 5'8", but it still fit weird. I'm not going to lie, it bugged me to get sprayed in the face. I solved the issue, I just bought a conversion cylinder in 45 LC and the problem was solved. Mine, like yours, was rather accurate too. It is a wall hanger. Mine is displayed proudly with 2 other black powder rifles that are hanging. I'll share the photo of where I hang mine on you FB page.
I love my Remington carbine, but I really wish they would have put a 24 inch barrel on it. It would have made it more accurate and better balanced. but, that's nit-pickin'! Great video!
hey dustin, i love your videos. i found you after looking into getting my first black powder firearm, the pietta reproduction 1851 navy "yank" is what im looking at
@@GunsOfTheWest i knew i wanted something that if i kept it nice i would have it essentially forever, your video on the slixshot nipples made me want to get those too when i get the 1851, but im sure the factory nipples will work fine for the time being. Have a great day, also its awesome to see that cool little rifle chair again. that thing is pretty sweet.
Awesome video Dustin! I would love to add one of these to my collection some day! Looks like a lot of fun and something a little different to change up the cap and ball collection!
Pretty great rifle! I recently bought a 45 Colt conversion cylinder for it and it's just about as accurate at 25 yd or so with rhe right loads. Plus, it eliminates the cap backsplash and if you want, the fouling, if you run cowboy action loads. Real good fun!
I have a stock pile of Remington #10 caps I purchased 5 years ago. I’m running low now and I can’t find caps anywhere. I’m now to the point where I’m not shooting cap and ball at all because I don’t want to use up all my caps. At least I can shoot my Single Action Army revolver and my 1911s because modern ammunition is abundant right now thankfully. Anyways, I’d love to buy that Remington Carbine! Thanks for sharing!
I still would love to see you get a Howell drop in .45 LC conversion cylinder for this piece and shoot some .45 LC cowboy loads with it. Maybe do the gated conversion with the single firing pin which Howell also offers now just like Kirst does
They are very fun and accurate to shoot. I added a leather buttpad that I made to mine because your right about it poking into you , even if you do hold it lower. After adding it , it’s a joy to shoot!! Great video!
Dustin I don't know if I mentioned it before but I just found this video. My grandmother had an original Remington carbine she'd let me hold when I got all the chores done she had for me and uberti got it dead in with theyr reproduction
Out of curiosity: have you ever tried the Lee Van Cleef grip from A Few Dollars More, where he grips the wrist of his trigger hand? And if so, how did that work out?
So, I have to ask: Is it normal for your New Model Army to shoot better WITHOUT lube? I got mine to the range for the first time a week ago, and it shoots much tighter at 25 yards without lube at all, and virtually no fouling at all. I put 20-30 rounds through it without cleaning it, and the last 4 shots of the day landed in a 1-inch group, and that was the best group of the day.
Hello Dustin I Hope that You and Yours are doing well. I always thought The Design of this Particular Revolver is really Cool. That Sail makes it look so Unique. Black Powder sure makes an interesting Show of Shooting.
Last year Cabelas had a Lee 200gr RN Conical 2 Cavity Mold for Cap Ball Revolvers. I'm just trying them out in my Pietta 1960 and 1858 but they seem to give good accuracy at 15 to 25 yds. Ive got your Cartridge former and they seem to load well in the 1858 but the 1860 is an issue with both Round Ball or conicals in Paper Cartridges, but both work fine with Loose Powder and Wads. My 1860 has not been altered for easier loading as I've seen done in some videos. Any tips are weicome. I loved this video.
Wait how does Remington deform balms differently than a colt would? Also is the debt enough to negate the extra 60 grains of mass? A bigger issue is Uberti uses .450” chambers. So you don’t get a shave and you get a loose fit bad for chain fire potential.
If the rear sight on your carbine is like the one on my Pedersoli .54 mountain rifle the screw on the rear sight (4:07 mark on the video) does not go into the barrel it only anchors the rear sight so it doesn't move after you drift it for azimuth adjustment. Could you check your carbine to see if this is or is not the case?
I want a rifle so bad ugh. Bough a steel framed army sheriff back in the day for like $300 bones, but the rifles and shotguns and blunders are all like $1000
The lever linkage on this gun is poor and with a bit of shooting and loading the link will break. However as a machinist and gunsmith I found that the link can be replaced with a superior item in that the plates from a chain say chain fits perfectly and out lasts the original link.
The one I owned was from the 1970's and was in 36 cal. Nice little gun. Great for small game. I bought it new back then and basically wore it out. Sold it in the late 80's.
Yes I got to say it does look good but it does not look comfortable to shoot I never wanted one and after watching you I still don't want one sorry Dustin
I hated that movie. It didn’t seem to have a point other than to be shocking and violent. I can get that on the 6 o’clock news every day with less vulgar language.
Check out the Guns of the West store here: gunsoftheweststore.com
I love the gun and the H-8 references!
You would be surprised at how many people I have come across who believe you have to hold the carbine in front of the cylinder.
From personal experience I’d comfortably say that blunted conical bullets give a flatter surface to deliver more stopping power but does take away from the intended penetration. Great video, always a pleasure to watch.

I found Remington #10 caps at Jay's Sporting Goods in Gaylord , Michigan last weekend. They didn't have any other caps in stock. I was surprised.
I have to agree with you Dustin. That's one good looking carbine!
Beautiful. I have a chiappa 1892 in 45 colt. I just love me some guns of the west

I'd love to see a video of this on the chronograph, especially side by side with the 8" revolver and identical cartridges.
That’s a great idea! I’ll do it.
@@GunsOfTheWest you have my vote that would be a very interesting video
Nice. Bet it would make a nice conversion. Beautiful piece!

They're great fun, but I use a howell conversion in mine exclusively now. Runs really nice in 45 colt.
Mine too, would like to see a video on a conversion cylinder
I recently had to put a trigger spring on my .36 caliber Navy.

Grear video and shooting/review of the Remington Carbine. As an aside, when will you be restocking the paper cartridge boxes in 36 cal?
Have you tried it over a chronograph? It would be interesting to see how much of an increase in velocity that you can get with the 18" barrel.
Out of curiosity: have you ever tried the Lee Van Cleef grip from A Few Dollars More, where he grips the wrist of his trigger hand? And if so, how did that work out?
I’d probably saw off the brass and instal single inch blocks until satisfied. Though I understand why some wouldn’t.

I have been wanting one of those for a long time
Mine has taken down a feral hog at 20 yards. Of course, standing still at a feeder. Shot right behind the eye.
That looks like so much fun!
Would be a good candidate for a 45 colt conversion cylinder..do they come in stainless steel?
That is a beautiful place to go shooting.
It sure is! Thanks for watching!
Rework the plunger to fit the nose of the conical bullet. Supposedly, on Uberti NMA revolvers, the plunger better fits conical bullets.
Great vid as I just picked one up.. 👍🏻👍🏻

It’s the Bench Master Sniper Seat 360. Here’s the review that I did of it: ua-cam.com/video/-5p9ixcNUiQ/v-deo.html

Hey bud what kind of hat do u wear where'd u get it and what size is the brim and crown
need those 44 boxes used to carry paper rounds
Would you ever consider drilling and tapping the sites to add a picatinny rail? Is it a bad idea?
I personally wouldn’t have any interest in it.
@@GunsOfTheWest I’m just happy I got a reply, you’re a stand up guy!
Shame modern revolver manufacturers don’t make hunting revolvers like this.
You'd have to chicken-wing such a rifle to keep well away from the side blast coming out of the gap between the barrel and cylinder.
Nice shootin'! 👍
Any day one can burn some charcoal, is a good day. 💥💨
