I like that revolver. Let's face it, gotta great name. Seems a good shooter, too!
When I hear the name I think of griswold cast iron skillets 😂
I have been looking for one of those but I keep finding the 44s I want the .36cal
Hi y'all ! This is my first black powder revolver. I used to live in Macon GA. about 15 miles from the G&G factory... Mine works nice, just a lot of deburring work before shooting. (I used your videos to learn) Greetings from Normandy, (France).
I just bought this revolver and it shots like a dream. Hello from Florida
Watching Western movies brung me here
I like the side by side pictures for comparison and reference...👍🍁🤠
It's a good thing you decided to take it easy on the charge. I seen a video a couple of years ago of Blackie's where he said one of his first bp guns was a Griswold that he shot loose. I think he said he got it in the 70s though. So if it took 40 or 50 years to shoot loose, that's pretty exceptional. He never said if he shot it loose right away, or if it took ages.
When I ordered mine I had it shipped straight to Lodgewood manufacturing to do their Defarbing job on it. I’m impatiently waiting for it to return. I haven’t even shot it yet.
Those brass frame, or gunmetal, revolvers aren't as fragile as a lot of people think.
You have it nailed. Keep it BP only, and maybe download it I touch. Itll shoot a long time.
Got on in my lap excited doing research on it
Awesome Little gun, like you were shooting it good
Of course Clark Griswold was so crazy he'd make a gun
I made that joke on Forgotten Weapon's video on this a year ago. Nobody liked it so I deleted it. I'm glad you guys have a sense of humor too.

What a cool pistol. I love the loading.
I was going to ask about the camera, it looks different than your other videos. I have been bitten by the Black Powder bug myself, it's a great feeling! Thanks Dustin!
Hi, Richard! It’s actually still the same camera, but the lighting is different. I had to record some of this one in the garage because all my new business stuff was on the table in the house. LOL
You’re right about the black powder. It’ll get ya!
I'm a BP junky myself. I was a little shocked when I heard Whitney. You really know the history and that is great. Thanks.
Guns Of The West hey GW. I’m deciding whether I want the Griswold or the ‘60 army. What is the best place to get B Powder, lead ball and caps right now in 2020?
Greetings from Texas
Guns Of The West quick disclaimer: I’m cool with either real powder or bp substitute
@@clongshanks5206 I don't know if Dustin will see your post because it's to a reply (UA-cam is funny like that) But! Cabelas usually has a limited supply of Pyrodex and round balls in a few calibers, you could chec some of the smaller "Mom and Pop" gun stores in your area, they'd be happy to get your business! If all else fails, check with Dixie Gun Works or The Log Cabin Shop in Ohio, both are great sources for BP supplies.
I like your channel. The tone of your voice and the direction of your videos makes it feel less like I'm watching a gun channel, and more like I'm watching an educational channel. It's a nice change of pace.
The gun sounds are the best in this video
Great video. I’ve got a Pietta 1851 navy as well as a 1860 army. I really enjoy shooting Pietta percussion revolvers. Thanks for doing this video I might be looking at adding a griswold and gunnison to my collection sooner than later.
The G&G reproduction revolvers I have found have been in the incorrect .44 caliber but are otherwise pretty good. They turned up at a local shop at different times, nice prices. They were made by Uberti in the '70s and don't have the safety pins between chambers, load one, skip one. They are otherwise decent revolvers.
Picked up a nice old reproduction of a G&G in .44 brass. Believe it to be Pietta, replaced mainspring, hand and pawl, (broken), with my stash of Pietta parts, top of hand needed filing down. Brass and .44? Not big on that but she really is a smooth, elegant firearm.
Very informative about the ease of loading the traditional conical without modifying anything in the Pietta. Last time I checked a few years ago I was hearing you had to get an Uberti if you wanted to shoot those long spitzerish pointy historical bullets. Impressed with the superior accuracy of the bullet too.
You gonna drop them pistols or wistle dixie
I really want to put one of these in my collection. Already have a Pietta 1858, Uberti 1861 Navy, and an Uberti 1849 Pocket.
Yes! Been waiting on this one!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
FFg will also lengthen the lifespan of brass frames.
Facial hair is looking distinguished Dustin, thanks for the awesome videos! Keep it up!
Was curious as to where you bought that gun. I purchased a Pietta which was advertised as a Griswold and Gunnison 36 cal., but it came with an octagonal barrel and a scene engraved on the chambers (similar to my Colt 1851 Navy but with a brass frame). I'd like to maybe send this back and get one that is closer to original. Geat video! Thanks.
It sounds like the just sold you a brass 1851 Navy. I bought this one from EMF. Thanks for watching!
I got a brass frame, no navy scene, but octagonal barrel, but it was the least expensive one I seen. Still has wood grips as well.
The Griswold guy who made these guns was part of the Griswold family who made cast iron cookware.
Interesting!
Keep up the great work!
Always easy to tell black by the sound... Cloud is a little different too, but the sound is very distinctively different lol
Nice video. Hows everybody? Y'all ok?
All good brother, how bout yourself?
I work to much
I like that you did the demonstration with both round balls and conicals. I was wondering if you'd have trouble loading them.
Squib Load I love it when the gun doesn’t need modification to shoot conicals!
@@GunsOfTheWest it still haven't tried them out, but eventually I will. I'd prefer not to make any modifications, but you made it look fairly easy in your video:
Modifying the Uberti Colt Walker for Conical Bullets
Never looks right using 2 hand hold
how Ironic, I got that revolver in my shopping cart, and a .44 Navy, looking forward to get into a new hobby
Welcome to the joys of black powder! I hope you enjoy it when you get your guns. Just a friendly reminder, with these brass frame guns, make sure you don't put as much of a powder charge in the chambers. Brass is weaker than steel and if you put a normal powder charge in, it'll eventually "stretch" the frame and make the gun inoperable. I had a Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy Sheriff's Model and I was stupid and didn't listen to that. Paid the price for it after a few range trips. I hope you have a lot of fun with the guns once you get them, they really can be a blast to shoot (no pun intended). 😁
Matthew Balusek hey Matt. I already asked GW, figured I’d ask you: where can I find plain lead ball and bp online? Also, what caps are good for the Griswold? Thanks
@@clongshanks5206 I buy all of my black powder supplies at a local shop, but I heard Natchez Shooters Supplies is a good website to order from. If you order powder online, one thing to be aware of, is that real black powder is labeled by the feds as an explosive, so ordering it online will also require Haz-Mat shipping charges. I personally use Pyrodex instead of real black powder. For percussion caps, a good start would be Remington or CCi #11 sized caps. With my Colt 1851 Navy, I use CCi #10 sized caps.
There *were ways of hardening brass “to near-steel specs” at the time, but I’ve not found the details.
Nice video! Thanks !
Awesome hat.
And it's cool to see someone shooting a brass frame. I know they aren't supposed to be as durable, but they look SO nice.
Do think someone interested in making it more historical could just file an angle to the bottom of the grip, or would that ruin it?
...I forgot.. experts say the barrell is round to economize material and by consequence, is lighter up front than the "Yankee" version...
Going to admit, I'm interested in finding one of these solely because of the show Hell on Wheels.
In one episode though, the main character, who carries a Griswold, does a kind of "speed reload" where he removes the cylinder and replaces it with one that's already loaded. I'm very curious if that's an actual thing that's possible with original Griswolds or these reproductions.
It is possible to reload a Colt style cap & ball revolver that way as long as you don't put the wedge in too tight, but having the wedge too loose can result in other problems which could be potentially dangerous.
The revolver you see Cullen Bohannon speed load in that scene was an 1858 Remington which are a different design from the Colt/Griswold copies, and are much easier to swap cylinders for that reason. Cullen only carries a "Griswold" (which in the show is just a Pietta brass frame 1860 Army in .44cal) for a bit in the first season. For the whole rest of the show he carries an 1858 Remington.
In that same scene you see one of the robbers attempting to swap cylinders in his brass frame 1860 Colt right before he gets shot by Lily Bell, and he's struggling with the cylinder swap because with the Colt design you have to remove the entire barrel to be able to swap the cylinder out. Whereas with the 1858 Remington you do not.
In real life the most common revolver used by Confederate soldiers was the 1851 Colt Navy in .36 caliber (steel frame).
Nice hat Dan!
I'm looking to get another .36 revolver I will have to this one out.
I got me a Snail capper and everything I needed at Cabellas in Farmington.
Would love to come shoot with you sometime i have The Walker.
What revolver would you recommend for starting out with cap and ball firearms? I’ve heard 1851 navy is a good choice
Yeah, that’s a good one. It’s cheap to shoot and has almost no recoil.
Here is a thought you might want to try. Why don't you get the Colt Dragoon gripframe and trigger and install it on the Griswold & Gunnison as the original pattern looks like it came off the Dragoon.
Here’s a question for you. Where have all of the black powder revolvers gone??!! Many online stores as well as the big name walk in store are completely out of stock.
Guns in general are pretty scarce. Between the election, the lockdowns, and the riots, things are just crazy right now.
Well I got lucky and got the last 1862 Dance from an online store. But they were out of powder. Guess I can make my own🤣.
Soy argentina cresi mirando Bonanza el gran chaparral Balle de pasiones ,me apasiona n esos revolver buenísimo el vídeo me gustaría tener de esos o actúe en wuester
You and Mike Bellevue are (almost) the same in your demeanor, techniques, style. ways & mannerisms, etc.
Sir, I've experimented with 13 to 15 grains of Goex 3Fffg in this model w/the Colt bullet and had a bit tighter and lower, closer to sight picture steel target hits w/ my revolver for contrast. Your mileage may vary. Thanks for this great video.
Excellent info! I’ll try that.
Kid Hammer ohmygosh! Is your profile picture a picture of you in an Alabama Yellowhammer Uniform?! If so, that is an awesome piece of history!
I have an Uberti Leech & Rigdon on the way that checks off many of the same boxes as your G & G: an Italian replica of a Confederate gun that is essentially a Colt 1851 Navy frame, cylinder, and loading lever-- but given a round barrel. The L & R should share the same lines as the G & G here, the primary difference being the L & R is steel-framed (that and the Uberti has a historically incorrect engraved cylinder rather than an unmarked one).
The chambers must be filled so that the ball is at the top of the chamber.
"His gun was gray steel and rainbow mother of pearl. Folks called them both 'the Sixshooter.'" Is the "gray steel" a slip of the tongue or was it common to leave revolvers in the white?
I’m hearing that if you take a brass 1851 colt .44 model and remove the barrel assembly. That you can replace the barrel assembly with a barrel chambered for .44 but the barrel looks just like a Griswald .36 barrel. Have you seen or heard of this?
You mean put a 61 Army barrel on a .44 1851 “navy”?
Yes, Pietta will sell a round 'Confederate' barrel in .44 caliber. Don't know if they sell it as a 'Griswold & Gunnison' model outside of the United States. They may have it listed as a 'Rebel' or 'Confederate' in .36 or .44 calibers. Same gun, though: a Pietta reproduction of a Colt 1851 but with a round barrel instead of octagonal.
Great video
Is this classified as a replica 1851? Thanks. Love the channel.
This made me wonder if we can swap a frame into Colt's steel frame because ... Steel frame and lighter barrel
I haven’t been able to find any of these in stock anywhere
Same, despite it being 1 year since your comment.
another reason for using the same parts off of the navy revolver other than cost is to discourage counterfeiting. confederate revolvers garner a premium as they are rarer.
I LOVE THE GRIZWALD GUNDERSON 44 CALIBER GOOD GUN SEMPER FI CARRY ON
How many grains can you use in a 36cal ?
Hey, Dustin. I am a fan of the west from Saudi Arabia, and I really like the design of this gun. Is there any place where I can order a good replica of the G & G Revolver? I am planning to collect many things of the west culture, and I'm starting with the guns first. Thank you.
I'm new to your channel but I didn't know you work with AZ Ghostriders with Santee and crew. Are you also in this neck of the woods?
Santee and I have collaborated on a handful of videos and they were nice enough to have me in one of their live shows, but I live in the Salt Lake valley of Utah.
@@GunsOfTheWest
Well, your channel is great and you should let us know if you're going to be in the Ben Avery area or anyplace nearby. Being new to this hobby there's a lot to learn. Stay safe and best wishes.
You should do a test to see how many shots it actually takes to shoot one loose. I keep hearing people talk about it. I would think a modern reproduction would be way stronger than the originals.
What size and kind of caps do you use?
Mostly Remington #10. Occasionally CCI #11.
I have a dance brothers revolver and every time I shoot fast a bot bucks out above the trigger blow the cylinder the first bolt 😢😢😢 help never been fired
Where can these be purchased? I want to find one because Samuel Griswold is one of my direct ancestors (I’m a Griswold). I’ve always wanted an original, but obviously they are worth too much money to own.
So would users of the gun carry extra Cylinders pre loaded for faster reloads ?
Can you use number 11 caps on the griswold?
Cullen Bohannon
Dustin, would it hurt the gun to use Pyrodex? I'm only asking because in my area, real black powder is very difficult to obtain. In fact, when I bought my first black powder revolver from Cabela's, all they had was Pyrodex for revolvers, and I bought a jar, but after reading all the horror stories about stretching the brass frame, my jar of pyro is unopened and my revolver unfired after 4 years.
I would use it if that’s all there is, but I would start with a small charge. Maybe about 15 grains.
That’s just me though. It’s possible it could damage the gun over time.
Real BP is highly regulated. I can get it at a shop 30 miles from me in NH but my details are recorded. Regular ammo has no such requirements, seems odd. BP is considered an explosive. You can make your own from ingredients found at most hardware or garden stores though.
Hi Dustin I subscribed to your channel
Thank you!
Yeah but the Griswold was supposed to have a shotgun barrel underneath the main Barrel does the replica have a shotgun barrel fire shotgun blast from the Griswold replica
Do you know how interchangable the parts are between the standard Pietta 1851, and the Griswold?
Whats the difference between this gun and the pietta Confederate 1851 in .44? Im assuming they're very similar however the latter has an octogon barrel..
Just the barrel.
I carried one as a Confederate Cavalry reenactor.
I would still only load 5
Oh neato! Cool
I have under good authority the High Fructose Gang is attempting to ambush you.
abraynor84 I can never let my guard down!
Where did you shoot the intro it doesn't look like Utah to me. LOL
Centerfield, Utah. Just north of Salina.
Can't do the brass ,got to have steel frames.
Normally, I agree, but brass is historically correct for this model.
Sorry, not even a close copy of a Colt Navy, except for being .36 cal. It is actually a slightly reduced copy of the Colt Dragoon but in .36 cal. The Navy has an octagonal barrel, the Dragoon still had the round barrel.
Good video, however! Fun to shoot!
It’s actually much closer to a Navy than to a Dragoon. The round barrel is the only major difference. This one has a brass frame, but the Navy frame is the same size and could be used for it.
@@GunsOfTheWest Have you thought of replacing the gripframe and trigger with a Dragoon gripframe & trigger? The original looked like it was a combination of the 1851 navy with a Dragoon grip & trigger.
Alsome video
Thanks, my friend!
Did the high fructose gang move out of town? You might have to move to Tennessee! Hickok45 has them in his yard. He has a flower pot infestation too!
Check out Dustin's latest encounter with the gang when he took the 3rd Model Dragoon out for a spin. Take a close look at what a 259-grain sugarloaf bullet does to the last bandit standing...
Want one!!!!???
36 caliber??
Man I am bummed out.
Years I order ordered one from
Cabelas maybe? Never shot it. It is in 44 caliber. That is not a Navy caliber.
Howdy howdy. *cocks gun*. Let’s get rowdy......
Hey dere "big chockoholic capaholic"! Nice review on a very nice gun. BUT WHY use such a "wimpy load" on a gun that needs all the power it can get?! Brass frame or not, I'd use at least 20 -24 grains FFFg for a defensive load, or as much powder as can be put behind a round ball or conical (one needs to figure out how much powder can be used) & not have the bullet schick out of the chamber to bind up cylinder rotation! .36cal. is NOT a real powerhouse!! My first black powder gun (1968!) was the same exact gun you tested, but made by Navy Arms. Don't know if it was worked over by a gunsmith, but the action locks up tighter than any S&W you'll ever see (absolutely NO cylinder play at all!!!). And NO cylinder score line by the locking bolt either (take note S&W!!)! The action is "perfection"! I haven't fired my revolver all that much over the past decades so I can't say anything about "frame stretch". But this type C&B revolver sure pleases my "aesthetic eye" for its fine beauty! If it doesn't do that, it's not for me (think "black guns"!)!!! "Gesundheit"!
