I have a manual 718 Spyder and actually had a 2015 GTS manual I traded in for it. The GTS was a fantastic car and having a 911 definitely is special. However, this Spyder is just on another level when it comes to performance. I don’t think I’ll sell it for a long time if ever, it is driving bliss!
Very interesting! I must admit, this Spyder made me question my ownership of my GTS. The Spyder is so sharp and fun. As a driver's machine, it is great. I think I will hold on to my GTS though, because I still drive long distances in the Porsche and the GTS covers that ground a little better for me. But the Spyder is such a great weapon.
Love it! Very INTELLIGENT Review! Best 718 Spyder review on UA-cam. Truly love the way you verbalized your description and Review of the 718. Hi Joe, Came across your most enjoyable review of the 718. I know your review is of the 2021 model and its now a model that's progressed into the 2022 and soon 2023 models but I found your review really helpful in a first hand driving driver experience of the car. I'm trying to research a buy in the very near future and am leaning towards Porsche for their drivability. My test drives have been of a few of the Porsche range but I dearly want an full open top car for the Queensland weather and weekend and daily fun drives, without a the super powerful twitchy engines the massive turbo models. But to hear form someone who's driven the car for more than 20 or 30 minutes like i have is very helpfiul in my choosing a second, enjoyment car. I was considering a 2018 2019 Ferrari 488 (pre Pista model) but my heart and eyes keep returning to Porsche for their practicality. I'm a tad scared to be honest of the practical using of a Ferrari and parking up when out etc. I am pretty sure the Porsche wont suffer from such immediate scrutiny as Ferrari's while not uncommojn in my region of southern Queensland are still seen as very exotic. Porsche not quite so much. I love the shape. The balance of the rear and front of the car is so pleasing to the eye and the dual ferrings on the rear boot give the car real zing. The rear end itself is so gorgeous too. Thanks again for the opportunity to share your pleasure of this beautiful car.
Thank you for watching my review and for your kind words. Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I am curious about what you decided to do. Did you end up purchasing a Porsche or Ferrari? I would share your concern about maintenance cost of a Ferrari. Not that Porsches are inexpensive to maintain, but I hear about very large expenses with Ferrari. I would be more comfortable with a Porsche in that regard. At any rate, I hope you are enjoying whichever vehicle you decided to purchase and thanks again for watching!
Great video Joe! Just what the doctor ordered to lift my spirits during the tumultuous times we live in. Escapism has its rewards. Looking forward to your next dose.
Thanks so much! Still trying to learn video editing. That car is so special, I tried to do my best to capture the excitement and enjoyment of driving it.
Good video. But the Syder should always be a manual transmission. It is marketed as a true driving car and not a track focused machine, such as a GT3 and thus it should provide the driver with the complete visceral engagement driving experience. This requires a third pedal and manual gearbox.
Great video and I appreciate how accurate you are when going through the car. I have a Spyder coming in a few weeks and I can't wait for this car. Manual of course.
Hi Joe, great review of the SPYDER. I have a 2019 991.2 Turbo S Coupe. This is my 17th Porsche. The car prior was a 2016 911 GTS CABRIOLET. I was hit head-on by a Chevy 3500 Silverado Dually pickup and so that awesome car was destroyed as well as myself. Seven surgeries later I encounter daily reminders of that accident. The 3 airbags saved me. I am on the waiting list for the Corvette ZO6. I am number 400+ after 15 months on the list. I may forego the ZO6 and order the SPYDER. It is a tough decision when I have an awesome Porsche already and a Corvette but the new ZO6 comes with 670 Hpw and redlines at 8600 RPM. However the SPYDER is one of the best looking cars ever!!! Most likely won’t get the Corvette until 24 or 25. So I am wondering if Porsche will make the SPYDER in 2023. Thanks again for your awesome video!!! Cheers Gordy
Oh my goodness! The accident and the aftermath sounds like such a traumatic experience. I am glad you survived that crash and recovered!! The Z06 Corvette's naturally aspirated, flat-plane crankshaft engine putting out 670 hp (!) will be a very special motor. I experienced a flat-plane crankshaft V8 in the Shelby Mustang GT350 that sounded glorious, revved out to 8500+ rpm and was a spine-tingling thrill! What a visceral experience. The Vette V8, with so much more power than the Shelby, should be even more thrilling. I drove a C8 Corvette convertible with the Z51 package and it is a great car, so the Z06 has a solid foundation. The magnetic ride is so smooth when you need it to be yet allows the car to handle very well. The Z06 should take this to the next level of performance. I suspect the Z06 will be a pretty rewarding car to drive. Having said all that, the Spyder is so, so, so much fun to drive and looks amazing. The Spyder is more of a scalpel compared to the C8/Z51 car. If you enjoy carving up a twisty road, that Spyder is really hard to beat and is more thrilling that the C8/Z51. And it is so gorgeous to look at. What an amazing design. The Z06, at least on paper, promises to be in a whole different league, performance-wise. But the Spyder provides a thrill!
Gordy, thanks for sharing your feedback. Hopefully you are getting better every single day 🙏🏻 Quick Q. After your experience with both GTS and Turbo S * I am still debating between both of them in cabriolet version. Which one in your opinion fells better * safer, as my wife will be driving. I am extremely confused and the on,y thing is missing in 718 Spider are space with rear seats that 911 have, but it’s look fantastic. Extremely hard decision...
@@Dejan_23Unlimited Hey Dejan, if you can get the 911 Turbo or Turbo S. Both the Turbo and GTS are the same in safety. All 911 Porsches are the same in safety. I have to say after my experience the 911 is one of the safest cars made. The Turbo or Turbo S are incredibly fast and definitely faster than the GTS. All three models are excellent daily driver’s cars!!! I recommend the Turbo. Turbo S is $20K more but the same car as the Turbo. Take your wife on a holiday with the savings by getting the Turbo. Definitely one of the best cars on the planet‼️
I’d take the spyder over every Porsche, (except maybe the speedster) Can’t wait to snag one. hope they don’t go up in value too soon! 👌 great review!! 🔥
The Spyder really had me wondering if I should trade in my 911 GTS for one. I still love my GTS and decided to keep it, but the fact that the Spyder made me question my car is a testament to how good the Spyder is!
Oh man, both are great around the curves. You can’t miss with either. But the 718 Spyder is tuned by the GT Motorsport department so it sticks a bit more and being a smaller platform it is sharper in the very twisty stuff. So if it is about pure canyon carving, the choice may be the Spyder. But for all around use, the 911 is still on top.
appreciate the perspective, I am currently in a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 and am considering the swtich to a 991.1 GTS Rwd manual coupe. I go back and forth on it. I am drawn to the looks and sound of the 991, but appreciate the smaller size and better manual in the 4.0. I think overall the 991 would be more of an event to drive for me, even if maybe slightly less fun in sheer driving enjoyment. Now the only trick is to find a rwd manual coupe in a color I like!@@Joe_Hutchinson
Your channel, Cars With Luke, Harry's Garage and Buzzy The Blue (I think this is correct) are just the best. You like cars and don't hate on other brands even if you do prefer Porsche. I thought your GT350 review was nice. Cheers to you man!
Thanks so much for your very kind words. I really appreciate that. As I am sure you can tell, I am car enthusiast. The brand doesn't matter to me if the car is special in some way. Take the GT350 you mentioned: that is a fantastic car in its own right and stands up to any brand! And I enjoyed my time with it (and wish I could have kept that one in my garage). When a car is great, you have to give it props.
@@Joe_Hutchinson btw your GTS has a beautiful induction howl that the newer Spyder and GT4 incorporate with the sound symposer coming from your intake , it does sound incredible. I was watching when you test drove your buddies manual GTS and you could really hear it in the lower gears when you got in it , it had that low growl that built up into that Howl , epic stuff . I wanted to ask you what your plans are for your GTS , are you going to keep it even longer since it’s the only engine that’s naturally aspirated for the 911 is the GT3 going forward .
Very good video. I have a 21 manual and it’s just a fantastic car! It makes you smile every time you drive it. Value and price aside, would you trade it straight up for your 911?
I believe that your 21 manual puts a smile on your face every time you drive it! I really enjoyed my time with the Spyder. What a fun car! Would I trade my 911 GTS in for it? From a pure driving pleasure point of view, carving up back roads, yes! BUT, I also go for long trips in the GTS so the GTS is a better all rounder for me, so I couldn't bring myself to trade it in for that wonderful Spyder. At least not yet.
Full disclosure: I have not driven a 992 Carrera S yet. So I can't say definitively. And, I would ask: how is the car going to be used? If its being used primarily to carve up the backroads, autocross, track then the Spyder fits that brief. Or, its being used to run errands, commute to the office/long distance and occasionally carve up backroads/autocross/track, then the Carrera S may be the way to go as it is more of an allrounder. Still fun but wider use. If the 992 S and 718 Spyder were sitting in front of me today, and I wanted to drive fast on a great curvy backroad and be thrilled: 718 Spyder.
Thank you for checking in on me. I appreciate it. My real job has become all consuming and made it difficult to carve out time to make videos. But I am back at it! I just posted a video this morning about my recent autocross runs in the 911. Please check it out. Let me know what you think!
I’ve read where the 718 Spyder weighs nearly 400lbs more than the 981, much of it due to the added emissions systems. Totally defeats the “light and nimble” essence of what the Spyder should be. Brutal.
@@danny200mph5 Thanks for the correction, so it’s about 300lbs more than the 981 Spyder. So both are equal when it comes to lbs/Hp. With an ECU tune, the 981 is about equal to the 718 in HP. The 718 is a great car, just not as engaging for me as the 981 and the 981 engine sound is much better due to the emission controls on the 718. Both are great cars, just “different” great.
Love it Joe H. thanks for the review, appreciated. My first choose would be a manual, yes i know, second Miami Blue, 3rd black wheels, 4rd ….. i need to save up because i want one. BTW yr 911 GTS is stunning still i would prefer the Spyder.
Oh, good question. The thin fabric top may not be as insulated as a normal 718 Boxster top but it does a decent job. Understanding that this is a sports car, not a luxury car, I was fine with the amount of noise coming in to the cabin. My wife and I were able to have pleasant conversations with the car's top up. No need to shout.
I have a spyder coming, but I'm starting to get very hesitant about trading my 981 cayman GTS for it....the GTS seems to just sound so much more passionate, emotional etc. Have you had experience with both? What are your thoughts?
I have not driven or experienced the 981 Cayman GTS so I can't speak to a direct comparison with the 718 Spyder. But what I can say is that the 718 Spyder is very engaging. My microphones may not have captured how good the Spyder's engine sounds so I apologize for that. The Spyder's engine note combined with the Spyder's open-top convertible adds to the whole visceral experience. I really enjoyed it.
Owning a 981 Spyder I can confirm that it sounds much better and emotional than its successor. The 718 Spyder sounds very well in these times but if you know the sound of the 981 you might miss something.
My real job has been taking up so much time. Plus trying to leave time for family. But I am back at it! I uploaded a video today that I hope you will enjoy. And more to come!
I know when I wash my car, the steel rotors for my brakes look rusty after being wet. As soon as I use the brakes, that surface level rust comes right off. I think that may be a similar situation with that muffler.
Nicely done, you've never been more excited telling us about a car. Is that a Spyder in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? 🤣You were super enthused on this one! I hear you on the PDK but I wish Porsche did a better job designing that shifter. It just screams old automatic! At least the 992 looks more high tech but you can't please everybody because people say that one looks like an electric shaver. 🤣 Nice car.. someone commented it's not a GT3 but last I checked the Touring doesn't offer a convertible so this is the ONLY convertible developed by the famed Porsche GT team. It's also not the $150K+ a GT3 would cost if you can find a dealership that will sell it MSRP. The reality is a 991 or 993 GT3 in today's market approaches $200K and the ones with a manual transmission are $200K. This is a nice option and something to think about.
I’d get the manual. But then the PDK is amazing, and the ratios are better TBH. You’d hear the engine more, but you’d lose the shifting engagement. Weirdly, the former might actually be more important than the latter. I can’t believe I just said that, but it’s probably true.
Decided last minute to fly to MN from VA back in May to pick one up….drove it all the 17 hours back and good god…the Spyder is such an amazing machine

I wish there was an option for a power top if you want it
4.0 GTS is the ticket.
Yes, agreed, 4.0 GTS.
Great vid Joe , I just sold my 16 Spyder and man do I miss it already lol , love that mid engine feel and I miss that Porsche howl !!!!!
Right on! It's so addictive!
What a beautiful place to drive, can I ask where this is? Looks like Lake George NY.
Several locations. The really twisty road was Harriman State Park.
I love your videos!!
Thank you so much!
I think its possible to keep the engine in the high rev power band with the manual as well.
Oh yes, for sure.
Great video!
Would you take this car over a 992 Carrera S?
@Joe - You good? Haven't seen a video in over a year!
Brutal.
The car only weighs 3205lbs which is a feather in todays car world. And with 414hp its a rocket.
@@thedudeabides1443I’ve heard tires and gt4 suspension etc add weight but make it more capable.
Great car sir. I must need a different set of ear buds, I'm not digging it's sound?
My exterior mic isn’t the best, unfortunately. But when you are in the car or the car is driving by, the engine/exhaust sounds great.
@@Joe_Hutchinson I believe you brother. Cool car. I will own a 911 someday! Good video.
Love it Joe H. thanks for the review, appreciated. My first choose would be a manual, yes i know, second Miami Blue, 3rd black wheels, 4rd ….. i need to save up because i want one. BTW yr 911 GTS is stunning still i would prefer the Spyder.
Love this car
Joe what is the road/wind noise like with the top up?
Oh, good question. The thin fabric top may not be as insulated as a normal 718 Boxster top but it does a decent job. Understanding that this is a sports car, not a luxury car, I was fine with the amount of noise coming in to the cabin. My wife and I were able to have pleasant conversations with the car's top up. No need to shout.
Anyone for one? Do you scrape it on speed bumps and getting up Shelly curbs to stores and gas stations?
is the 2.5 faster
🔥🔥🔥
Why aren't you uploading videos anymore?
My real job has been taking up so much time. Plus trying to leave time for family. But I am back at it! I uploaded a video today that I hope you will enjoy. And more to come!
4:46, WTF muffler already rusty???
I know when I wash my car, the steel rotors for my brakes look rusty after being wet. As soon as I use the brakes, that surface level rust comes right off. I think that may be a similar situation with that muffler.
@@Joe_Hutchinson Stainless Steel would be nice.
Thanks Asten! Yes, I was really pleased with this car. HA! All good points about GT3s and the Touring!
WOW ,,,,, what a car..... but still expensive for a 6 cylinder car.
too bad its impossible to get any of the special Porsches
Yeah, and nowadays, with the supply shortages, it's so difficult and dealerships are charging extra premiums. It's really crazy now.
good😆😆😆😆
okay jay z 😂
As great as it is, it doesn't sound like a GT3... imho...
Fair enough! You are right, the GT3 engine is in yet another league of its own.
Having said that, you were lucky to have fun & some time with the Spyder... Congrats!
You lost me at PDK, ugh
You've obviously never driven one
oh yeah because your manual 2004 honda accord gearbox is better, snob
I’d get the manual. But then the PDK is amazing, and the ratios are better TBH. You’d hear the engine more, but you’d lose the shifting engagement. Weirdly, the former might actually be more important than the latter. I can’t believe I just said that, but it’s probably true.
