  • Located just off the Carnarvon-Mullewa road at the Wooramel river crossing is a little known gorge, accessible in the dry and having permanent water this place is a haven for birdlife in the heat of the outback summer.
To get there you need to be well prepared as it is remote country and the possibility of being stuck there after rain can be quite high. Flash flooding can make the road impassable as the rivers flood and the tracks turn to mud. But in the dry the road is good and the track into the gorge quite easy. The heat and the flies then make it really feel like the outback.
The gorge itself consists of steep sandstone cliffs abounding a flat sandy river bed, I can only imagine what it would look like in flood, when we visited at Christmas time there was still a significant body of water that supported huge flocks of native budgies and other birds.
The track in that we took was on the north side of the crossing but later we did find out that there is a track on the south side that leads into a camping area on top of the cliffs, I have no information on the condition of that track, if anyone does know it then let us know.
So I hope you get something out of this video, and if you go there please leave it in as good a state as you find it if not better
