So its the wet and you are in Darwin, what can you do? well here is what we did during Feb 2024 in the middle of the wet. We flew there for 2 weeks (overnighting in Kununurra due to a flight change. We went specifically to experience the wet, but only had the car hired for 5 days. Our favourite goto place anytime of the year is the Territory Wildlife Park at Berry Springs, 40 minutes form the C...
Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) by boat
Переглядів 2078 місяців тому
After being in Katherine for the night we headed out early to catch the first trip on Nitmiluk (previously known as Katherine Gorge) ronly way to see the gorge properly is by a tour with the indigenous owners. They are knowledgab;le, humerous and informative, would highly recommend doing the boat tour. In the dry the boats can only get to 2 of the sections of the gorge due to water levels, if y...
Bitter Springs - Mataranka
Переглядів 11910 місяців тому
Just a short video on the Bitter Springs, thermal springs near Mataranka. Nice crystal clear, warm water and the current allows you to float gently down the spring. Don't forget to bring your noodle or other flotation device (Alternatively an empty goon bag (wine cask) works well) Much better than the Mataranka thermal springs that were overrun by Bats and smelt so bad we had had to leave
Joe Creek Walk NT- A walk back in time
Переглядів 5910 місяців тому
This Walk is located in the Timber Creek region of the Northern Territory easily accessed off the Victoria Highway. The walk itself is a loop walk, 1.7km in length but Class 4, scrambling over rocks , and uneven paths through spinifex and along creek beds.. So make sure you wear good strong shoes, take plenty of water and allow 2 hours to do the walk. The best time of day is early morning, not ...
The Grotto- 5 minutes from the Gibb River Road Oct 2023
Переглядів 16810 місяців тому
In Oct 2023 we visited the Grotto Gorge, a little known gorge thats not visited by the vast majority of those who do the Gibb River Road, yet its only a few minutes from the eastern end, just of the Gt Northern Highway So if you want a quiet swim in the cool water in the heat of the day then this place is easily accessed by a sealed road, and the water hole is via 144 steps carved and built int...
Lake Nallan- a 24 Hour stop. Why had we never stayed?
Переглядів 295Рік тому
We had driven past here literally heaps of time had even stayed just down the road at nallan Station, but we had enever noticed this place . Maybe because normally it is dry as, nothing more than caked mud and salt in the bottom of a depression, but not this year!
Arid Lands Botanical Garden - Port Augusta South Australia
Переглядів 112Рік тому
Just a very brief clip on what we consider to be one of the best things to do in Port Augusta! You could easily spend a day there, kids get their own playground garden, have a meal at the cafe, or a drink or three!. But the star is the plants themselves especially when they are in flower, the birdlife, the walk trails and the sculptures. We also found the display gardens quite interesting, how ...
Koppio- A Must See Museum
Переглядів 62Рік тому
The Koppio Museum in Central Eyre Peninsula is perhaps one pf the best nhjeritage museums that we have visited, Plenty of exhibits, interactive, and took us back to our childhood at the same time. Worth spending a couple of hours going around it ... ok and make sure you check out the barbed wire collection, the largest in the southern hemisphere... and yes barbed wiore collectiing is a thing......
Murphy's Haystacks Eyre Peninsula -South Australia
Переглядів 259Рік тому
BAck in the old coaching days , a travelling going along the nearby road was impressed by the size of the local farmers haystacks, he thought he must be a very good farmer to have haystacks of this size but he was mistaking these rocks for haystacks. As the farmer in Question was called Murphy they became know to future passing travellers as Murphy's Haystacks. Today they continue this name eve...
Centre Road Crossing - Free Camp on the Deep river- Mt Frankland National Park - Walpole
Переглядів 361Рік тому
A free camp amongst the forest just outside of Walpole in the Mt Frankland National Park 5km of easy gravel leads into this non-bookable campsite, a small area for tents and an old forestry hut. This camp used to be a section of the Bibbulmun track way back in the 90's , if you are towing be aware there is no room for turning a van around in the carpark, you will have to reverse back out a km o...
The Pelicans of Oyster Harbour- Albany, WA
Переглядів 105Рік тому
A recent trip down to Emu point, Albany - Western Australia, found us walking in the early morning mist at the small Oyster Harbour marina. The Pelicans had all taken to perching on the poles amongst the jetties and boats (that is apart fron one that had tried to land on a street lamp, slipped and fell off....most ungracefully....so tried....and failed It just seemed like they were waiting for ...
Nungarin - A museum with a difference in the WA wheatbelt
Переглядів 333Рік тому
Last year we visited Nungarin as part of a trip. low and behold we discovered they had an army museum, which we had never heard off. We knew about the one in Merredin and the old Army hospital but didn't know anything about Nungarin. As it turns out Nungarin was the largest military base in Western Australia during World War Two, 5BOD (or 5 base ordnance depot) was built in 1942 in Nungarin so ...
Return to Nungarin - A Party, A searchlight and a very loud noise
Переглядів 259Рік тому
Last year we had gone to Nungarin and discovered the Army and Heritage Museum, while there we heard about their searchlight party and heritage rally scheduled for March. So, we packed up Little Bus and headed off on the 4th of March and went to see what it was all about. This is a short video on the day, make sure you have watched the previous video on the museum to get the full picture. There ...
JAYCO FRIDGE MOUNT ISSUE- Rectifying a poor design
Переглядів 51Рік тому
We noticed on a recent trip our fridge had moved backwards into its cupboard, we hadn't knocked it or done anything to cause it and it wasnlt until we removed the fridge that we found the problem. In our experience Jayco has often built to a budget not to a standard and this is a classic example, the framing of the cabinet was not up to scratch relying on two fine threaded screws to hold a smal...

Thanks guys, heading through this way the next couple of days and was looking for something to explore. Will check it out!
Hope its still as good
Wow beautiful footage , just amazing not sure I could canoe there 🤣🤣 have a great safe trip enjoy 😊👍cheers Darrel
Thanks for feedback, have a great day
Excellent video , great detail on the engineering fix for the fridge , I have same model Jayco but only 3 months old everything is going great presently but really appreciate you sharing the fix , great job love the fan as well, been watching many of your videos and enjoying the travels, thanks for sharing, I also like the insect screen on the sliding door to the Jayco, looking to buy from Living in a Bubble is that where you purchased yours ? Thankyou Darrel 👍
Thanks Darrel The insects screens we have need to be custom made due to the top rail on the Renault's sliding door intruding inside the van so much. Ours were custom made by an auto trimmer here in Perth. who created a boxed section to allow the door to close without pushing the nets out. Always looking at improving the little bus where we can, spent some time pulling panels off and shoving insulation under etc Do you have the brass monkey fridge, if so you might have another issue with the fridge
@@westausoverland thanks so much for getting back to me, living in Perth I like watching the places you have been giving me great ideas on where to stay thanks for sharing , yes I do have the brass monkey fridge and so far in summer I just leave it on as I regularly do day trips and take water and lunch with me, the 200 watt solar panel and 120 amp lithium powers everything easily , do you think your auto trimmer would be interested in doing another sliding door ? If not no worries just thought I would ask , thanks again for sharing your travels as I will keep liking and watching Thanks Darrel
@@darrelwright7871 I'm sure he would like to , it was GK trimmers in Canning Vale (0894557144) , did the job in 1 day, not only did he do the sliding doors but also the rear doors, really like the screens. i thnk they were a total of $1400 not the cheapest but solidly built. We have an issue with our Brass Monkey fridge in that I checked the temps. The temp indicated by the fridge is around 6-10 degrees warmer than the actual temp in the cabinet. I just now run an external fridge temp as security. We suspected something was up when the drinks were not quite as cold as they should be. I now have the fridge app and set the fridge temp to -5 degrees and this seems to work really well. was thinking of doing another video on some other tips and also the Jayco RM19-1 reveiw 1 year down the track (as we just love her) , we had the PVC shower walls replaced under warranty as they had warped and bubbled in the heat (hence stuffing everything with insulation and also the fridge extraction fan) In Case you are interested we do do a travel blog as well, ( thatcampervanlife.blog ) which gives more details on where we go then the videos do.... have a look like to know what you think. any other questions i'd be happy to help
I remember having a swim in that pool. Very enjoyable until a big water monitor jumped off a ledge into the water near us and scared the life out of us :) Beautiful place and really worth checking out. There was still some water coming down at the far end of the pool when we were there.
The water was nice and cool, felt great after getting out, but by the time we got to the top of the steps thought about going back down for another swim
Have to agree 👍
thanks
Was there today worth the visit just go make it happen
yep agree
Good stuff, we spent three nights out there photographing the place and loved it.
Thanks, not sure if there has been anywhere in WA that you haven't been, love your work, keep it up Al
Just found your channel and enjoying going though your videos. I’m 64 getting ready to retire and just purchased a new hybrid caravan.. thanks for the inspiration 👍 I’ve subscribed and looking forward to new additions
Thanks John Big step going into Retirement, Jo is close to doing the same, We have changed our main tour vehicle now to a fully self contained campervan that we call 'Little Bus', Only 2WD so there might be a slight shift in the flavour of our videos, But essentially we still go outback, and to all the places we have been, just finished 3 weeks over in SA on the eyre peninsula. Our travels are also documented in our blog thatcampervanlife.blog if you have any interest in the back story that goes with these videos Cheers and thanks again.... good luck on the retirement Al & Jo
Good one 👍🇦🇺 2:43
Thanks
Love this spot! Can't wait to get back down there again this winter
Spent Christmas Day there ... two nights, and didn't see another soul.... even rained briefly, thrid time we have gone back and its always the same... very special
W20 actually stood for Western Australia, part of the Prisoner of War Employment Without Guards Scheme, there were PWCCs in most states and it was successful in assisting Australia's war time economy. There were 28 PWCCs in WA and controlled by the main POW camp, No 16 at Marrinup. There were a total of 18 POW camps in Australia during WW2. W20 was classified as a POW hostel for errant Italians who were returned to No 16 POW Camp due to offences such as malingering, escaping and non compliance, it was a guarded camp but not fenced. Originally used to detain enemy aliens in 1940 who originated from Italy and other Axis aligned countries, they were employed to cut fire wood, maintain roads and assist local farmers. In the early 1900s it was a timber mill run by Millars Timber Co and known as Old 39, being 39 miles from Rockingham, abandoned in the great depression of the 1930s, much of the structures remained, the mill was not used by the POWs but having a serviceable rail line, fire wood was cut and transported mainly to Perth. The Officer Commanding was Lt Tom Gibblet and WO2 Frank Lingard, both strong disciplinarians and no nonsense men, there was trouble and many escapes from the camp, when recaptured they were sent to Marrinup and locked up in the detention camp for 28 days and loss of privileges. After punishment they were returned to W20 and detailed extra duties and hard work for their crimes and closely guarded, W20 was run as a POW camp and had a knee high single strand perimeter wire, crossing that wire was classified as an attempted escape and accordingly dealt with. Roll calls were conducted at least 3 times a day and often snap roll calls were conducted to ensure all were present on parade. Conditions were spartan, disciple harsh, the work hard and food rations basic with little or no luxuries or extra rations. A book has recently been published.....A cage in the Bush, by Ernie Polis....which records the history of German and Italian POWs in WA with many never before seen photos and detailed account of how the POWs were administered between 1943-46. It relates historic information and snippets of personal experiences from both sides of the wire. W20 was not a secret camp, but little is known about its functions and limited information available through National archives of Australia, certainly no photos are known to exist. It is an interesting site to visit and as the sun goes down and the wind rushes through the tree tops you can almost hear Italians chattering in the bush along with orders shouted by the Australia guards.
Good Info... Thanks
G'day! Just bought one ourselves and are wondering how yours is holding up. Loved the vid, cheers.
In All honesty we still love it, and its had a hard life, the weak spot was the wire mesh grill in the base that holds the coals, finally melted through the wire in one or two spots although it still worked fine we have welded up a new one out of flat bar, so now its indestructible... thoroughly recommend it Al & Jo
That’s a great video . Thanks 👍🇦🇺
Thank you, trying to keep things simple
I’ll have to check this spot out. Any free camping there or close by. Great video
Thanks for the comment, Closest camping I know off would be at Willow springs just nearby, nice spot but it is a Parks and wildlife campsite so minimum cost, Also possibly at Karri gully but haven't checked that out Al
Creek/River crossings with a concrete base are called causeways.
yep I knew that but sometimes my mouth doesn't say what my brain is thinking ..... thanks anyway
Is there 2 camping spots at Toapin weir? We've been to the area where there were toilets in amongst a lot of Sheoak trees, not very inviting. Where you were camped looked a better spot. Nice video.
There are two spots yes, the first is at the actual weir wall and there were toilets and fireplaces, tables etc there but out of order! we camped in the area across the road, more of a paddock then anything else but big enough for biggish rigs to get in. Thanks for the feedback much appreciated Al & Jo
Nice work, ill be in Menzies on Monday.
Thanks
