The guy reacting to Henry's solo, Shawn Martin, has his own moment to shine in the song "Sleeper" and it's a beautiful track worth checking out in its own right.
Father forgive me. It has been ten days since I last listened to some version of Lingus. I know four days is the required amount, I will try to do better. Hail Larnell, full of grace, that, Cory plays at such a pace.
Larnell Lewis is a monster on the kit. He’s done some stuff with Drumeo where he listened to a fusion piece once and played it flawlessly. He listens to something he needs to play and visualizes himself playing the song as he listens, then he takes notes, and then executes.
Not taking away from your quality of analysis (because it was absolutely excellent and possibly one of the best on UA-cam), but I think the amount of views all of these "Lingus reaction videos" get within a month or so of being uploaded is a true measure of how great this piece of music is. It shows that there is a massive group of people eager to see other people enjoy this song as much as they have. Snarky Puppy has made many, many incredible songs over the years, but Lingus has by far the most mass popularity of any of them by the looks of it. I think there are many elements that make it brilliant: the solo, the percussion, the horns, the arrangement, the mixing and every player in the band individually. Somehow all of these elements combine together to make a TEN MINUTE LONG MODERN JAZZ FUSION SONG have over 20 million views on UA-cam. This shows that this piece of music has reached a monumental level in popularity, and has managed to bring fusion to the masses. The song was released in 2014, so it is by no means old at all, but I personally would call it a classic, and possibly one of the greatest pieces of jazz fusion (or even jazz) of all time. Random ramblings aside, my other favourite piece by the band is "The Curtain", a piece that they did on an album with the Metropole Orkest that showcases a fusion between modern funk, jazz, rock and orchestral music. If you were looking for another Snarky Puppy piece to react to later on, I feel like this would be a good one to listen to. Anyway, thank you for this video, I have watched too man of these reaction videos to this particular song, but I still gained a lot from your analysis.
I have never listened to anything like that before, though I am a big Tool fan. That was so enjoyable, all the musicians were virtuoso, but that guy on the keys was a fucking force of nature!
Also grew up on tool and metal and now snarky is one of my favorite bands. Have a listen to outlier and what about me for some heavier tunes from them.
I usually like classic rock and metal or whatever, but I've been listening to these guys for a couple months straight and you just can't deny the freaking greatness. I guess I listen to jazz now.. This is a gateway band..
Oh my Geebz !! I've been following your youtube progress for ages and you've come a LONG way ! Close to 250k subscribers ??? What a journey ! Congratulations, all well deserved !
What's kind of amazing to me, about 3/4 of the way thought it's almost like he's going to flame out. He brings some thematic stuff back in different parts that tie it together. And the way he finishes it off is so slick. The early part of the solo has some real delicious melodic sequencing too, just brilliant.
I absolutely love these insights man. I have played music my whole life (one of those kids drumming and tapping feet in every setting) and I have always had so much fun in that, and my ear for music has been heavily trained as result. I have NEVER dabbled in music theory, and in adulthood that has left me feeling extremely incomplete as a wanna-be musician. I'm taking the long way around to say, your input mirrors allot of my thoughts when I heard these pieces first too. Your input has helped me understand something so damn profound. I am a musician, who has never learned the language. Somewhere my soul understands what my mind cannot articulate. You helping me understand this, is a very big deal to me. Thank you man! To feel on the same frequency when digesting music, as someone with your accolades, it makes me not feel like a hack anymore. Knowing how to jam, without knowing a single chord has huge potential to make someone feel absolutely moronic in the presence of professionals.
@@KeyOfGeebz it felt like the absolute least I could do. True mentors are a bit rare, and so expressing my gratitude, is a must! Have a good one man & please consider keeping these series rollin!
You're not alone in that. As I sit here listening to music and appreciating nuances "pop connoisseurs" readily skip over, I realize I've definitely missed the boat in making music. I've played drums in senior year high school, but there is so much theory I now painfully know I'm lacking. If I were to be able to stop working, I could finally sit down and start the journey at "Chopsticks"...
@@roriquevernonii8439 It may not be too late my brother! With all these websites that musicians can just upload work to, things are looking groovy dude!
That's so crazy that your uncle was from Caldera! I have all 4 albums on vinyl, incredible music. Sky Islands, Out of the blue, and Shanti are constantly getting played
I figured most Caldera fans would be passed on by now :) Totally dig them and I feel that Snarky Puppy is carrying on the spirit of bands of that time.
A little thing I love here is how clearly we get to see that music really is a language. My guy here is listening to the story that composer is telling and nodding his head because he completely understands, and he raises his eyebrows at any interesting bits of the story. Just an interesting story between two great orators.
I always love finding videos of people reacting to this song, especially when they can bring to light aspects and ideas that never crossed my mind. Thanks for showing me even more reasons why I fell in love with this song, and band!
Wonderful playing, great composing and arranging. A lot of the arrangements are by Michael League - bass player and band leader. This music just lifts me so much. It's like entering another plane of music and art. Enjoyed listening to your comments from a musician/composer/engineer/producer's perspective.
Love seeing one of the greatest songs (in my opinion) again through another persons eyes and ears. Especially when that person knows about music and is as respectful and entertaining as you.
Love the reaction and the insights from you as a composer! Snarky Puppy is "led" be Michael League (the bass player) and he composes most of their music. He is a true visionary for sure. May I suggest, since you enjoy the brass solos, for your next Snarky Puppy reaction that you do Shofukan or Kite from the same session? I think you will really appreciate either one and I would be very interested to hear your thoughts. Keep up the very interesting / educational videos! They are great!
A fourth vote for the staggeringly superb Shofukan, but may I suggest the North Sea Jazz Festival version with the Metropole Orkest, rather than the one from this session? Loved seeing your reactions to this amazing ensemble, and it was fascinating to hear your commentary - thanks!
As much as I love the keyboardist. The way the drummer and other percussion build from right before the keyboard solo happens to the end is fantastic. This whole band is great.
Hey, great reaction!! Don't ever feel bad for pausing if you feel like you have something to say. As of now, I've only heard insightful and interesting points of view from you so... Just keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome so far heh. Cheers from Brazil.
Every solo ever performed - be it guitar, piano, harmonica, soprano sax, ocarina, balalaika, banjo, triangle, cello, marimba, you name it - every solo wanted to be Cory Henry's solo here.
You are one of the only reactors who I feel is really sensitive to the places where you stop. Thank god! Appreciate your ears :-) PS love the "cleansing the rhythmical palette" - great stuff!
Was really excited to see you did a reaction to Snarky Puppy. So cool to see someone finding the same joy in this kind of music (progressiv metal/funk/rock stuff) as I do. Especially a composer/engineer like you presenting his thoughts on the matter. Very cool!
9:05 Their song Tio Macao, off this album, is a really great and fun song for percussion. They have three percussionists who play an extended solo at the end, and it is AWESOME!
You're the reason I found Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops, and other incredible artists I may have never run across otherwise. Just so you know how important a video like this can be. Sharing music. No one should be deprived of hearing this. Thank you, sir. I am in your debt.
This normally wouldn't be my jam but you pulled me in with Tool so of course I'll continue on this journey with you. We shared with you now you are sharing with us.
I'm a Tool fan too, but I've been listening to Snarky Puppy for years. Good music to vibe to comes in many flavors. I hope you listen to a few more of their tracks. If you want something else instrumental, "We like it here" off this same album is outstanding. If you want something with lyrics, "Gone Under" is a huge piece.
Have listened to this recording 100 times. Mind bogglingly talented unit. Not ashamed to say (as a fellow de-composer) it oft times brings a deeply respectful tear. Loved your reaction. Thanks for the honesty. ✌🏼
I think the best part of this whole set is the fact that Larnell Lewis learned the composition of all the songs he played while he was on the plane to the gig. This man is amazing beyond description....
i've been spending the last several hours going between watching the originals of louis cole, knower, snarky puppy, clowncore, among others, and your reactions to/breakdowns of their music. i am so so glad i found your videos!!! you have covered some of my very favorite songs and musical groups so far (and i look forward to watching more of your videos and discovering more groups!) i'm just so pleased to get to re-experience all this music with someone like you, who can break it all down into the specific references, musical quirks, et cetera, and i also just love that you are as pumped to be experiencing this music as i am! thank you for sharing your knowledge and joy!
Caldera, eh???? I've got Sky Islands sitting downstairs from who know how long ago with another 2,600 of it's brothers and sisters! I always had a affinity for fusion since the early 1980's. The musicianship was always other worldly as was most of the song writing. Flash forward to earlier this year when I found out about Snarky Puppy and oh my!, oh my! Absolutely loving your articulate reactions!
Can we also just praise the camera man for the moment at 2:52, catching that obvious love fest going on between drummer and bassist. Just jamming together on a stuffed stage.
Dude! I've thoroughly enjoyed experiencing your reaction, the way you got into the "how" and "what" of not just the notes being played but of the soul being pulled up and expressed by the musicians and those observing the taping. This is a treat to become aware that an engineer possesses this trait and I'd allow that a session with you present would be MAGIC! Play on, my man! Play on!
In regards to the “live to DVD” concept, if you went to any of ther live shows in 2019 they gave out thumb drives with direct downloads from the live mixed show within minutes of the show being out. So they have a lot of success in this idea of direct mix downs. But yes this was also clearly mixed down in post.
So. First. You have a new subs here! Why? Your eyes. Your facial expressionism. Being a mental health therapist with over 20 years experience, it is my passion to just watch people's reactions to certain events to see if they are congruent with one another. I could literally see the "wheels" turning in your mind as you were trying to process all of the musical information that was being "fed" to your musically affluent, analytical mind. Meaning simply that I could see you really vibing with this joint! Enjoyed this reaction immensely!
As a polyrhythm/polymeter fan who's done a tool video in addition to this, you might really enjoy analyzing Meshuggah!!! I think your composer mind would freak out at what they do! Bleed is the most often recommended song, but I think Clockworks is a great recent track to get into. They are ridiculous prog metal gods with a love for jazz fusion stuff!
Im not a sound engineer but the way you move and react to what you're listening to is exactly how I feel music. It's nice to see similarities within humanity. Totally subscribed to your cool content!
“Reaction” had everything to do with the viral success of the Lingus video. Seeing the people freaking out in the studio has a profound psychological effect that makes you feel as though you are really witnessing something. Meanwhile, it is a phenomenal solo.
I’ve seen Snarky Puppy probably 7-8 times and every time the percussionist blows my mind. Every single musician is top of their class and makes for an amazing live experience every time.

The first time I heard SNARKY PUPPY was 6 months ago and it was LINGUS. I was AWE struck at the talent and sound. I am a true jazz lover and by far my favorite. When I'm a little low or need a pick me up, I listen to them. Their best song yet is their latest called TRINITY. Which is from their new album coming out in September and I seen the video from that song and it's all their great playing over their career put into one song. I didn't think they could get any better but they did. IT made me emotional. Amazing!
Throughout the tune you refer to the percussionists on occasion. That brought to mind Pierre Moerlen's Gong and their take on fusion where percussion took the lead. Moerlen was the drummer for Gong and this was his turn at re-fashioning the Gong name. Try the first LP, Gauzeuse! where Alan Holdsworth is the guest gunslinger on this release. The music is like nothing you've ever heard! Give 'em a shot!
Re: listening to the brass section solos as a guitarist. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from a guitar tutor was “try playing a sax solo on guitar”.
You smiled and air drummed etc exactly when I expected you to...funny how this band rises above so many other good bands in part because of their uncanny group hive mind or whatever you wanna call it. Each one loves, appreciates and celebrates the others skills and passionate contributions and have been doing #o for decades now...Makes me truly happy someone else has found this magical group of virtuosos making high level sonic memories. Just purchased Cory’s MasterClass because he does a chapter on his Lingus solo, with a good bit of it transcribed ... worth the price of admission ... @9:08 - We were raised in SoCal and my parents were friends with a couple called Sue and George Rekow. Their son was named Raul. They were very proud of their son who had just become a member of a band lead by Carlos Santana.
Pretty sure it was mixed again later as you said, but there were no overdubs/retakes or anything like that. All of the effects were done live too. The sound is pretty close to what you would hear at one of their live shows. I think you might dig the feel of their version of Don't You Know (ua-cam.com/video/eqY3FaZmh-Y/v-deo.html) with Jacob Collier who is another freak of musical nature himself. @@imetzl9340 A Grammy? No sir, my dude's got FIVE Grammy's.
his solo was so angelic.
@@styx85 picked up a sixth about a week ago.
Fun fact, the "bassist" is the actual director, and conductor, plus composer for the band. He's mostly the director
Another fun fact...he used to live down the street from me. He’s awesome!
@@dafingaz That's amazing
@@swaggyp1219 yeah. One of the most knowledgeable and humble musicians I've ever met.
That is the single best keyboard solo I have ever heard oh my gooooooood.
Of course I’m here till the end . Really enjoy what you’re doing. Keep it up.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thankfully someone mentioning the tight assed horns!!
Father forgive me. It has been ten days since I last listened to some version of Lingus. I know four days is the required amount, I will try to do better. Hail Larnell, full of grace, that, Cory plays at such a pace.
🤣
Amen 🙏
LOLOL
Celebrating at the Church of Puppy!
🤣🤣🤣
Technically speaking : IMPROV GOD COMING OUT HIS SOUL
Come back here occasionally because your facial expressions during the solo are perfect😂 much love
I have never listened to anything like that before, though I am a big Tool fan. That was so enjoyable, all the musicians were virtuoso, but that guy on the keys was a fucking force of nature!
dude as someone who grew up on metal jazz is so beautiful and the similarities between the two are amazing
@@toXXic501 totally. I played funk and metal bass and it set me up well for jazz.
Yes, Corey Henry is awesome.
Wow, thank you so much for that comment, really.
Me too! I love caldera, discovered them through Earth Wind and Fire because Larry Dunn was with both bands and they just rock!
I figured most Caldera fans would be passed on by now :) Totally dig them and I feel that Snarky Puppy is carrying on the spirit of bands of that time.
Corey Henry is a beast! An absolute Legend!
A little thing I love here is how clearly we get to see that music really is a language. My guy here is listening to the story that composer is telling and nodding his head because he completely understands, and he raises his eyebrows at any interesting bits of the story. Just an interesting story between two great orators.
Percussionist here. Thanks for the comments & kind words. :-)
2:56 Funk face synchronisation! 🥴😂 Awesome tune!
Right? :)
Thank you very much! 🤙🤙
Shofukan is really awesome!! That ending is a must watch for sure
Shofukan gets a third vote
A fourth vote for the staggeringly superb Shofukan, but may I suggest the North Sea Jazz Festival version with the Metropole Orkest, rather than the one from this session? Loved seeing your reactions to this amazing ensemble, and it was fascinating to hear your commentary - thanks!
15:26 Great frame to pause on, pure joy!
Great video again!
It's so wonderful to watch someone react to the Cory solo for the first time 😊😊
As much as I love the keyboardist. The way the drummer and other percussion build from right before the keyboard solo happens to the end is fantastic. This whole band is great.
The guy lifting Cory in the air is Shaun Martin four time Grammy winner ...
Torben what’s that stuff in back ground almost too the celling
*6 Time 🙏🏽
When he gave a shoutout to the percussionist that made me SO happy
Thanks man!
Hey, great reaction!! Don't ever feel bad for pausing if you feel like you have something to say. As of now, I've only heard insightful and interesting points of view from you so... Just keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome so far heh.
Cheers from Brazil.
There's just something so amazing about listening to musicians who are in total control of their instruments
My life long goal is to get good enough at music to know WHEN I am supposed to say Oh damn in that solo. LOL
Very cool!
11:30 for the keyboard solo if you NEED to hear it again like I did 😬
9:05 Their song Tio Macao, off this album, is a really great and fun song for percussion. They have three percussionists who play an extended solo at the end, and it is AWESOME!
"I'm gonna pull the emergency parachute going down the Tool rabbit hole", hahaha, hilarious. Exactly what I needed. Thanks (Y)
You're the reason I found Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops, and other incredible artists I may have never run across otherwise. Just so you know how important a video like this can be. Sharing music. No one should be deprived of hearing this. Thank you, sir. I am in your debt.
That middle section with the keyboard solo reminded me a ton of The Mars Volta.
Dude this music makes me SMILE... :) Lots of surprises.. and I've heard it a bunch before..
Glad you cracked a smile!
If you want something with lyrics, "Gone Under" is a huge piece.
im a metal, rock, hip-hop guy but watching snarky puppy play gave me an appreciation for jazz
As a percussionist…. Thank you for the shout out. Great review, and earned a gleeful sub to your channel. Look forward to diving into it more!
Have listened to this recording 100 times. Mind bogglingly talented unit. Not ashamed to say (as a fellow de-composer) it oft times brings a deeply respectful tear. Loved your reaction. Thanks for the honesty. ✌🏼
Thanks for the shoutout for the percussionists Jeebz!
I think the best part of this whole set is the fact that Larnell Lewis learned the composition of all the songs he played while he was on the plane to the gig. This man is amazing beyond description....
i've been spending the last several hours going between watching the originals of louis cole, knower, snarky puppy, clowncore, among others, and your reactions to/breakdowns of their music. i am so so glad i found your videos!!! you have covered some of my very favorite songs and musical groups so far (and i look forward to watching more of your videos and discovering more groups!)
i'm just so pleased to get to re-experience all this music with someone like you, who can break it all down into the specific references, musical quirks, et cetera, and i also just love that you are as pumped to be experiencing this music as i am! thank you for sharing your knowledge and joy!
What an awesome video and reaction, thanks for your insights and knowledge. I just found your channel yesterday, and very happy I did!!!
If Chick Corea, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, and Fishbone had a love child.
Congrats! One of the better analysis that I’ve seen in UA-cam
Can we also just praise the camera man for the moment at 2:52, catching that obvious love fest going on between drummer and bassist. Just jamming together on a stuffed stage.
Thank you so much for your insight I appreciate you reacting to this wonderful group
Just wanted to say this - Your uncle and the band had it going!
15 minutes in "Sky Islands" and that stuff is awesome!
Play on!
I appreciate that! 🤙🤙
How did I miss this for two years?! Wow this is spectacular! Nice to hear such great music today!
As a percussionist who has played in a band and did a live recording like these snarky recordings, I feel so seen right now!
As a long time bass player, I’m blind so don’t “see”” you but I grok and feel you! Nothing like the buzz of tight bass, drums and percussion. ❤️

I really enjoyed you enjoying Snarky Puppy playing Lingus. I just discovered them a few months ago when I heard someone mention their name. Looked them up on the web and hit the Lingus You Tube video. I was transported and amazed, and it gave me an intense feeling of joy. Watching it helps me get through these dark times. I still watch it when I need a lift. So glad we humans have music.
Sound like you live in the 808 state my guy (from there). Great react, it's hard not to be amazed by Snarky Puppy. What About Me? is another great one.
Shooootz 🤙🤙
The first time I heard SNARKY PUPPY was 6 months ago and it was LINGUS. I was AWE struck at the talent and sound. I am a true jazz lover and by far my favorite. When I'm a little low or need a pick me up, I listen to them. Their best song yet is their latest called TRINITY. Which is from their new album coming out in September and I seen the video from that song and it's all their great playing over their career put into one song. I didn't think they could get any better but they did. IT made me emotional. Amazing!
as a drummer i felt like you under appreciated larnell lewis, but it was still great to watch haha
I'm not a drummer but I thought the same.
This video is how I found larnell. I agree, he was the first thing I noticed
0:45 WHOA. caldera is my fav jazz fusion band! That’s so cool!
me 10:00 minutes into watching your reation to one of my fav bands be like: "shut up you haven't heard nothing yet" :D
Me too! I kept going. Just *wait* until he gets to the Corey Henry solo....
Love this reaction..he's saying what I've been thinking
Throughout the tune you refer to the percussionists on occasion. That brought to mind Pierre Moerlen's Gong and their take on fusion where percussion took the lead. Moerlen was the drummer for Gong and this was his turn at re-fashioning the Gong name. Try the first LP, Gauzeuse! where Alan Holdsworth is the guest gunslinger on this release. The music is like nothing you've ever heard! Give 'em a shot!
The keyboard solo is beyond mortal ...it is sooooo damn good !
Cheers
Hey bro. I'm an old guy living in Hawaii as well (Kauai). I appreciate hearing the thoughts of professionals like you.
Cheeeeeee! Super Mahalo for watching 🤙
You need to watch the complete DVD to get the background to this session, incredible group ... great DVD
Just purchased Cory’s MasterClass because he does a chapter on his Lingus solo, with a good bit of it transcribed ... worth the price of admission ... FYI, the other keyboardist in the group are just as talented as Cory. Especially Bill Laurence, who has about 7 CD’s released under his own name. Also you should check out the Family Dinner Vol 2 with guest artists like Jacob Collier, David Crosby, Charlie Hunter, etc. My wife, don and I had the privilege of attending this session and it was magical .. this is a great group/band ... 👍
If you are looking for something really interesting on the "rap" side, check out Run the Jewels, Thursday in the Danger room off the RTJ3 album. The depth of all of their music is pretty amazing. Lots of production things going on.
Love hearing your comments about this. I will watch more. Thanks (and yes I'm still here lol).
I thought this said Skinny Puppy and I was excited and scared at the same time, but alas I was mistaken... great videos though!
😂🤣
Slightly different artists.
He might be another interesting rabbit hole for you to dive into if you aren't already familiar with him.
One of the absolute best keyboard solos of all time. My favorite part of this video is Sean Martin's reaction to Cory's solo and then he says "nah" and just goes into the crowd hahaha amaIng
