    Since I discovered this performance, watching other people's reactions to it has been an abiding pleasure. I know I'm not alone in that either. This is a generational performance that will go down in music history. Clearly, Cory Henry is plugged directly into wherever music comes from but all of the musicians here are masters of the highest level and they support him perfectly.

    @5:09 That trumpeter with that initially drawn-out bending note and then his flurry, seems to be paying homage to Miles. Also, his processed sound, going through the flanger pedal is also very Miles. The sax wailing as it did also seems to be something borrowed, i suspect another homage there too.
    The great thing about these reaction videos is that most of us already know what's coming, so we are all thinking, if you like that, wait to till get a load of what's coming. ;0) And then there's how this piece ends. That hint of the Hammond organ. You just know there's another idea that should have, could have, would have followed. but that's all she wrote.

    Great reaction. What impresses me with Snarky Puppy even more is I)this was written by the bass player ii) the song was written 2 days before being recorded for this video iii) the keyboardist Cory Henry was going to play drums because they didn't have a drummer for this session and iv) Larnell Lewis the drummer flew overnight from the US to Amsterdam to record this and only had one rehearsal then played like that. These guys are in another league.

    The drummer Larnell Lewis is indeed a VERY humble and talented player.

    Something rarely even mentioned is this is IN 5/4; the verse is a very slow 5 and the middle section is double the tempo of the verse. On one of the live versions, M. League says it’s their version of ‘dub-step’. The group was formed at what is now called University of Northern Texas (called North Texas State when I was a kid) and a Mecca for jazz musicians for decades. Another of theirs to catch is a love song in 14/4 called “Don’t You Know” featuring musical genius Jacob Collier (along with N.O. souzaphonist Big Ed Lee) …and another rabbit hole to fall into when you see what JACOB does. The goose bumps you feel experiencing this music don’t stop over time.

    Between Michael League (SP Bass), Bill Beller (Aristocrat Bass) and Misa, that is the "holy Grail" of bass tone and groove I'm searching for. BTW, these are mostly college educated musicians, mostly out of Texas, lol! Corey Henry's solo, the best, and Larnel Lewis (Drums) was a fill-in. He learned all of the tracks recorded in this session while on the long flight to Amsterdam (recording site). Prior to his arrival, the band was "emptily" rehearsing, thinking this was not going to workout. The rest is Grammy history, Po! BTW, that is the same Larnel Lewis that listened to a track then played it on Drumeo. This is musicianship masterclass, Po! Oh, they just finished recording a "Live" like the one you're listening to, in Dallas.

      I love how this story shows up every time.
      Also, it’s nice to see someone else who found this band because of that Drumeo. He mentioned “snarky puppy” and I was like, “what’s that?”
      And the rest, as they say, is history.

I was watching a drummer guy react to Larnell Lewis and the Lingus song, when I noticed the drummer had also reacted to someone named Akane and Band-Maid. 4 months later and I can't stop listening to Band-Maid every day now. Snarky Puppy was my rabbit hole just before I discover Band Maid. They are my favorite bands. This song opens my eyes to the role of the drummer during the solos and in general Larnell Lewis opens my eyes to drums. The album was recorded live, the musicians and the public uses headphones to listen to the mix. All this album is available on their youtube channel. If you like the drummer I recommend from this same session "What About Me?" (ua-cam.com/video/fuhHU_BZXSk/v-deo.html)
    The participation of Larnell in this session has his own history, instead of spoiling it here I recommend that you add to the reaction of the previous song the short clip "Snarky Puppy We Like It Here - Larnell Arrives" (ua-cam.com/video/EvxN7wCjSis/v-deo.html)

    Hey, Ryan. These guys are good. If you'd like to also hear something special, look into Senri Kawaguchi. Senri has been one of the top drummers in the world since about the age of 12. She’s 25 now. All the top players want time with her and has recorded with many of the greats. She has a number of excellent jazz fusion albums and is always in 4 or 5 groups at a time. She even plays great hard rock prog fusion as well as straight on jazz. She did a lot of this while she attending college, too!!
    I've been following Senri Kawaguchi for more than a decade and consider her to be one of the best drummers in the world. In fact, I found Band-Maid through Senri. My list goes something like this: Senri the best all-round drummer (Akane the best hard rock drummer); Band-Maid is the best Hard Rock band; The Warning the best original rock band; Hiromi Uehara the best jazz fusion pianist; Yuja Wang the best classical pianist; and Tatiana Smailyuk from Jinjer the best Metal vocalist -- amazingly, all women!

You can't go too far because of the way the instruments work on fixed resonances, but certainly enough to get this kind of pitch stretching, etc. Trombone obviously has a lot of tricks you can play with the slide, but even with keyed valves like trumpets have, you can get some pitch play out of fiddling the valves a little.

    There's a dude named Joshua Meader who does that key solo on a guitar and it's completely bonkers.
    This was the first song that went over my head musically. Like it sounds cool to me and i get that it's difficult stuff to play, but musicians talk about it like it's the 2nd coming and that made me feel left out because i don't speak the musical language from a player perspective. Usually i find difficult music to be fairly inclusive but this song makes me feel uninvited. It actually made me start learning more about music to bridge that gap. If any of that made sense lol

      He was doubling his key part with his left hand. Which basically requires an opposite movement.... pretty nuts!

      @@RyanMear right, but was that not written, practiced, rehearsed that way? I'm not trying to diminish the talent and skill, I'm trying to understand what makes people who do the same thing gush. It's just a disconnect. I've seen plenty of absolute bonkers piano performances and never seen musicians collectively lose their shit over anything else the way they do with this

      I think maybe it wasn't. Or just seeing that done, perfectly, in one take was just that amazing. It's also the notes chosen and played, his ease of playing it, his obvious joy. I think maybe he surprised some people by improvising a bit.

    Yup. Snarky with Jacob Collier is at least as impressive and he's quite the keyboardist, too even more so on his own recordings, although that's just one of the 20 instruments or so that he plays. And then there is that vocal range and precision. He's up to 5 Grammys now. Moon River is one of them.

    This one always leaves me breathless. Someone probably mentioned, but Lionel Lewis was called about a day before to cover for their original drummer, and he learned all the songs on the album in something like a 17-hour flight. Here's a great short documentary on this tour: ua-cam.com/video/5p5sEewsYNM/v-deo.html

    He's bending the notes with the valves....VERY hard to do while maintaining proper air flow and volume of the notes without sounding flat or sharp.

    • @brianm744
      @brianm744 Рік тому

      Chuck Mangione would do that with some of his pieces on fluglehorn, which is even harder since it requires even more airflow than a trumpet. Also che k out Winston Marseilles, he's a classically trained trumpeter that has won several grammys for jazz trumpet and also does the valve note bending. Iirc, Louis Armstrong started (or revived) it all. Kinda like Michael Hedges revived tapping and alternate (very in his case) tunings.

    Point 1: Yes. There is only music. People want to divide music into this and that and the other; we like this and don't like that ... Jazz (Dixieland? Swing? Beebop? Modern? Free? Fusion?) or Classical (Baroque? Romantic? 20th Cerntury? Minimalist? Post-minimalist?) or Rock (Blues? Classic? Metal? Industrial? Death?). It's all bogus. There is only music.
    Point 2: Yes. It is a big world and there are many excellent musicians in it. Even if you could spend your entire life listening to music you could never hope to catch up to it all. It's just a bit humbling.
    Point 3: Yes, you can bend notes on brass instruments (actually, certain notes are inherently a little out of tune so you have to "pre-bend" them to play in tune with everyone else), same as reed instruments. He was also pushing the valves down part way. No, it is not easy; it's hard to control.
    Point 4: YES! Snarky Puppy! A Denton TX band! The music school at the University of North Texas is insanely competitive. It's not enough to be good; I became a software engineer.

    Do you really need to over compress the audio so much? The music gets the worst part of this, it sounds horrible... :(

    • @borisnot
      @borisnot Рік тому

      If your goal is for the music to get a bit softer when you speak, try to side-chain compress the music with your voice as the key. This way the music is not gonna get compressed unless you speak, and it will sound a lot more natural ;)

    • @RyanMear
      @RyanMear  Рік тому

      So far you're the only person to complain about it. I don't add any compression. Looks like you may need to check your settings.

    • @borisnot
      @borisnot Рік тому

      @@RyanMear my settings are fine, I checked the original video just before commenting, and yours is indeed overcompressed (I'm talking about dynamics, not codec compression)... Maybe you're not compressing it on purpose (in this case just ommit my second comment), but just by setting the audio gain too high your video editing software compresses it to avoid clipping. If you are not bothered by this and I'm the only one complaining, obviously you can just make like I didn't say anything, but I tell you, your audio is extremely compressed. ;)
