Again, I told you 😉Everyone in that room belonged there. The Keyboardist is like a servant. Just amazing control. The drummer.. to learn that song on a plane and play it perfectly the next day. crazy. He's done other videos with a first listen and then plays it perfectly (even metal). I would have loved to be in that room.
Welcome to the juicy world of jazz. You have to know your stuff if you're a jazz musician. You're not background participants, you're front and center, major, not minor. No distractions of singers or lyrics, although jazz music sounds like a unique language unto itself, full of emotions and meaning. The magic that is jazz. I'm so happy you found it. Back in the day, I played trumpet (17 years). My son caught the jazz/music bug (plays tenor sax) and is continuing where I left off. Please, please, please, react to more jazz, blues and funk. I loved watching you react to Snarky Puppy. This song (Lingus) is amazing!
This reminds me of the ‘70’s group Passport and their album “Cross Collateral”, a vinyl disc that I played all of the time while in high school with notions of becoming a professional musician specifically in the jazz or fusion or electronic keyboards…. This performance made me smile inside and out. Great job and great filming everybody., thanks to my local jazz station in the US, KNKX, in the Seattle-Tacoma area which I listen to in Bellingham and also currently while doing research here in Belgium and throughout Europe.
Right, so you like 'Snarky Puppy'. Next, check out 'Dirty Loops'. Some of their songs: Work Shit Out, Breakdown, Next To You, Follow The Light, Rock You.
You HAVE to do a reaction to Shofukan. The brass solo is so good it hypnotizes the cellist in real time. She looks dreamy. It's one of the best moments in music ever.
I second the motion - it's a totally different vibe from "Lingus". Ethereal... And for an even different vibe, "Quarter Master" from an earlier session - a fun, Dixielandish romp.
Larnelle learned ALL those drum parts in 36 hours with only one or two rehearsals. It’s a story that will be told for as long as people will be talking about Cory’s out of body experience DMT trip alien being inspired solo. There’s only one musician I’ve heard go off like that and that was Joe Zawinul.
Tiny point. Snarky Puppy learned, rehearsed and recorded the 8 tracks over 4 days. Rehearsals during each day, recording in the evening. AFAICT, two tracks per day. Not to detract from Larnell, but Snarky Puppy had to learn the drum parts Larnell had composed, and Larnell theirs. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year. ☮
@@gbulmer I prefer my version! Hyperbole always makes good bedfellows with a myth! But you’re right of course. I saw a different version of Lingus with an entirely different solo from Cory from one of those rehearsals and it’s insane how different it was, and the cut they chose was truly, in comparison, like magic in a bottle. A very happy Xmas and a fantastically funky new year to you too buddy. Any Pup fan is a friend of mine. 👍
We're lucky, we get to say we were alive on earth at the same time as Cory Henry and Larnell Lewis - and all of them to be fair but those two in particular on this one. The rest of them are just great. "Only" great. But what Lewis pulls off there, learning the whole set (not just this number) in the time it takes to fly from the US to Holland. And he's a beast. And then Cory Henry creates / plays / composes one of THE great solos. The construction, the pacing, the phrasing, the way he nods to Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder and - you name it there's a little bit of it in there and a LOT of Cory Henry it is glorious. It's worth listening to the rest of the concert and realising this is the finale of a concert where all the other music is on almost the same level and they can just push it that tiny bit more to get to Lingus. It's transcendent. It crosses - boundaries, genres - are left in a tiny puddle of whatever - we get to share the planet with these guys. We are so lucky long may they continue.
No. That Larnell Lewis 'fact' maybe most misquoted 'music fact' on UA-cam. On Larnell's Drumeo video _Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly_, in the first minute or so, Larnell explains that he _already knew_ 2 of the songs before he got on the transatlantic flight to *The Netherlands.* Not to detract from Larnell. He's amazing anyway. He wasn't memorising existing drum parts, he was composing them. Further, they rehearsed by day, and recorded in the evening across 4 days, I guess two songs per day. Snarky Puppy had to learn Larnell's drum part. I believe Lingus was one of two he'd 'learned' before he boarded the 'plane, but I can't find that video. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year. ☮ Super Tiny point. The country is The Netherlands, Holland is only part of the country. A little like saying flying to 'New England' instead of the 'USA'.
As a musician Jazz is the best experience you can imagine. It's a natural high to be part of a group so tightly synced and on the same wavelength. Just flowing with it. It's amazing
“I felt my credit score going up” 😂😂 Old boy who was looking at him like he’s a cold dude is Shawn Martin who has won several Grammys himself so that’s saying something. I’d love to watch you explore more songs from this session. Not a disappointing one in the whole set!
Yeah, you wouldn't know it from this song, but Shawn Martin - every musician here - is at the absolute top. Across this whole album, it's such a delight to see them supporting and enjoying each other's music. Shawn was so happy for Corey at the end of this song because they all knew he'd just played one of the greatest jazz solos of all time. There's another clip from the documentary about this album where Shawn tips Larnell Lewis a $20 after a solo just laughing because it was so good. The fact that Larnell learned these songs on the plane by listening to the ban rehearse with a click track and then walked directly from the airport into the studio and played this is so mind bogglingly epic.
Fun story about Shawn. SP did a show in Syracuse, NY a few years ago. It was mind-blowing, hands down the best group of musicians I have ever seen. This was my first time seeing them as well after becoming a fan a few years prior. They are nuts, nuff said. After the show I was walking back to the car, and I ran into Shawn around the block smoking a cigarette, hanging out. He was the nicest dude, super chill and seemed like he didn't mind chatting with us at all. I told him it was the best show I had ever seen, and that he shredded the Sleeper solo better than the recording, which he did. I was still in high school, and he told me that they were going down to Funk 'n Waffles (waffle restaurant/music venue, one of the city's gems) to jam and hang out. I told him I had a final the next day so I had to go cram for it, and he wished me good luck and shook my hand. I did well on the final and I think his luck helped some because I wasn't particularly prepared. Long story short or tl;dr, Shawn Martin is a cool ass dude.
@@kelzakdub That’s an awesome story mang! I was born & raised in Syracuse (well, Westvale 😁) lived there until about 2005 then ventured out into the rest of the country
@@kelzakdub Very small! I'm living in the Philippines at the moment and I ran into an American Ex-Pat, we got talking and it turns out he grew up in Camillus 😆
See them live. It’s a crazy vibe and atmosphere. Everyone “singing” along, dancing, clapping, I’ve never felt so connected to a band on stage. They are truly incredible performers who make you feel like they’re loving every second and you’re part of it. It’s so much fun.
Every time I listen, the drums are nuts and that keyboard solo is insane. My favorite part(s) come from the trumpet. When exchanging solos with the sax, the soaring crescendo to take the solo over is killer.
15:20 - Exactly the right reaction. 🔥Yeah, Shaun Martin is the guy who took his headphones off and at the time he was a four time (?) Grammy winner who has gone up to six now.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I NEVER REALLY COMMENT BUT PLEASE SNARKY PUPPY - BET..........It's new and has one of if not the greatest talkbox solo i've ever heard
Watching people watching this for the first time never gets old. :) The energy in that room is just as infectious as the music. I envy every person that was there that day.
I just saw this video on my list of recommended videos and I knew I had to watch it immediately because first time reactions to this insanely talented band never get old! I'm sure you thought that you would be listening to straight-ahead "old school" jazz with a swing beat when you read the comment describing Snarky Puppy as a jazz band, but whoever wrote that obviously forgot to mention, or is oblivious, to all their other influences, including funk, rock, soul and R&B. The first time I heard this, I was also blown away by their technical ability and the killer groove and solos, along with the fantastic writing and arrangement. I've been a keyboardist since I was a kid and during the entire synth solo by Cory Henry my mouth was open, my eyes were glazed over and I think I was mumbling something like "not possible...not possible...". 😁 I swear that the drummer, Larnell Lewis, must have a metronome implanted in his head because his his killer groove is so damn solid and as you alluded to, he learned the song on the flight to the Netherlands and then proceeded to play like it like he's known it for years, which is F-ing amazing!
I forgot to mention that when I initially heard the song, the first thing I noticed (other than than the killer groove) was the way all the horn players were playing the melody line just behind the beat in perfect unison, which I absolutely LOVE and it really shows how much talent and feel they have. BTW, I love your reaction videos because of your willingness to listen to styles of music which you have not previously listen to along with your interesting insights into the songs and honest opinions.
No, I believe Larnell did _not_ learn Lingus on the flight to the Netherlands. I believe Lingus was one of the two he'd 'learned' before he boarded the 'plane, but I can't find that video. Maybe most misquoted 'music fact' on UA-cam is Larnell learned the whole album on the flight. On Larnell's Drumeo video _Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly_, in the first minute or so, Larnell explains that he _already knew_ 2 of the songs before he got on the transatlantic flight to the Netherlands. Not to detract from Larnell. He's amazing anyway. He wasn't memorising existing drum parts, he was composing them. Further, they rehearsed by day, and recorded in the evening across 4 days, I guess two songs per day. Snarky Puppy had to learn Larnell's drum part. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year. ☮
If I remember right, this was the band's third take and Larnell's first take. The first times with the original drummer it just wasn't clicking, but the drummer had trouble with his passport on route to the artist collective where this was shot and Larnell had to be flown in last minute. The chemistry between them all is amazing, and you can see how well Cory Henry and Larnell Lewis are locked in.
Don't stop there. Listen to what about me, outlier, and shofukun from the same album. Then you have from the just released album trinity, take it, bet. Snarky puppy is on another level.
By far best comment on youtube for "Lingus" and, yes, Larnell learnt the songs for that session on the flight, arrived in the morning in Holland and played that in the afternoon...!
Not only one of the great jazz pieces of the last 30 years, but also one of the all-time greatest performances by Cory Henry on keyboard (and that's before we start on the drums!). All round fantastic players. One of THE great bands.
Alright. Now you're getting REAL. Your ear is great, btw. good work. FYI this is a modern Jazz classic. (And yeah, for keyboardists, it's considered among the best solos in history.)
I know what you mean by the drums captivating you even if you don't consider it your favorite instrument. A good drummer is a force to be reckoned with and you have to pay attention to every beat of the performance. Awesome Jazz all around and a little funk for spice. Love your channel! Sub
The cool thing about this is not just what individual instruments are doing (which is amazing) but how they are interacting with each other also. How the bass player and drummer are locking on together, how the horns are responding to each other, or how the keys and guitars are echoing each others melodies, etc.
Damn Corey Henry!!! Human beings aren’t supposed to be able to slay a piano solo like that!!! That’s it!!!! You’re a freaking clone😂!!! Seriously, a true Master Musician at work!
Thanks for “expanding our horizons” in this video. I’ve heard this particular song more than I can count and I still thoroughly enjoy listening. Your reaction is priceless. Try some gospel music soon. Some of the Snarky musicians grew up in church. See what artists they’ve played for.
You actually should listen yo the whole album, that is this exact performance session they recorded and which you can find in its entirety on youtube. Lingus being the last piece. Amazing album.
_Tiny_ point; Lingus is the penultimate music track on Snarky Puppy's own "We Liked it Here" playlist Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year. ☮
First off, I gotta say, bro, I LOVE your voice! You've got a radio voice for sure. Being a huge fan of Snarky Puppy, I'm really glad that you got your ears "opened" to this group of musicians. Also, I don't believe that ANYONE would expect it to be neccesary for you to apologize for stopping and commenting. In my opinion, you stop at appropriate points AND would have to thought to pull things back a little so that we can "stay" with the groove. Your channel just popped up on this and I have subscribed. I'm truly looking forward to your future reviews/commentary on Snarky Puppy. I personally think that Corey Henry's solo work on Lingus is HISTORICAL!!!! And Shawn Martin (the other keyboardist who got "full" and walked off) is (I think) is a 5 time grammy award winner. So for him to become overwhelmed by Corey's solo is saying something!!!
Great comment and I would second the opinion that Corey Henry's solo is historical, with damn near perfect flow in his melodic ideas and slow build up to a scorching finale and his technical abilities are simply insane. There are videos now on UA-cam with musicians breaking down his solo and I think one even has a transcription. I've been a keyboardist since I was a kid (MANY years ago), with a history of playing in multiple bands in various genres, and I can honestly tell you that the first time I heard his solo I must have looked like I was in a trance with my mouth open and mumbling incoherently. 😆 Another thing that struck me on the first listen was the way all the horns were playing the melody line in the first segment of the song just behind the beat in perfect unison (the sax and trumpet solos were also killer).
The expression at 15:20 just slayed me. 10/10 what every human being with an ear for music feels at that point the first time listening to this masterpiece.
POLO, can you imagine being there? Or going to a concert with these boys jammin’ like this. I heard this for the first time last year. This is other worldly! 🔥🔥🔥. I liked your review. First time to your channel. Just subscribed.

Your face during the whole keyboard solo lol 😆 🔥

Right, so you like 'Snarky Puppy'. Next, check out 'Dirty Loops'. Some of their songs: Work Shit Out, Breakdown, Next To You, Follow The Light, Rock You.
12:09-Yes, you are right!! He is playing with ALL our hearts and minds 😂😂😂
I suggested Outlier because it's got such a killer sax and drum solos and a great groove. But you can't miss on that whole album
RIP Shaun Martin
i love that you keep rewinding. seems like you really care!
I love these reaction to hearing Snarky Puppy. It’s like, “Where have I been, under a rock?”
Also absolutely love watching people discover Snarky Puppy.
You had a smile of pure enjoyment on your face. They are great…
I WISH I could have my 1st time listen , just one more time .
"i COULD FEEL MY CREDIT SCORE GOING UP" lmfao the best response ever :)
Super Tiny point. The country is The Netherlands, Holland is only part of the country. A little like saying flying to 'New England' instead of the 'USA'.
Snarky Puppy is pure musical joy.
As a musician Jazz is the best experience you can imagine. It's a natural high to be part of a group so tightly synced and on the same wavelength. Just flowing with it. It's amazing
just won their 5th Grammy for their latest album, Empire Central. Give it a listen!
@@hiighflyer13 what an incredibly small world! That's so wild I was also born and raised in cuse!
Dude it's too good. I used to live in a church with all these hobo musicians and we would just listen to this all the time lol
I saw them last month. So good.
Every time I listen, the drums are nuts and that keyboard solo is insane. My favorite part(s) come from the trumpet. When exchanging solos with the sax, the soaring crescendo to take the solo over is killer.
Welcome to Enlightenment!! Larnell Lewis ( Drummer) & Corey Henry (Keys) to a Great Band to another Level!!!
I still can't believe how amazing these guys are!! This music blends multiple styles and genres....flawlessly.

Yaaaasss!
So glad to got to experience SP! They are incredible. Check out their song called “Something”, with Lalah Hathaway on vocals. Mind-blowing!
thats my shit!!!
Corey Henry is unstoppable!! You gotta catch em live man!
Just say that your mind melted.
You should check out Larnell Lewis(the drummer) on Zildjian Live. It is an amazing performance.
If you love the drummer, Larnell Lewis, then you'll definitely love Snarky Puppy - What About Me?! Great reaction 🤎
The best keyboard solo I've ever heard put down. Even his band mate lost his mind over it!
Not only one of the great jazz pieces of the last 30 years, but also one of the all-time greatest performances by Cory Henry on keyboard (and that's before we start on the drums!). All round fantastic players. One of THE great bands.
what a pleasant surprise
btw the Drummer is on another planet
Alright. Now you're getting REAL. Your ear is great, btw. good work. FYI this is a modern Jazz classic. (And yeah, for keyboardists, it's considered among the best solos in history.)
So glad you reacted to this one! Always love to see new people react to Snarky Puppy and the best keyboard solo of a generation.
Cory Henry and Larnell Lewis - these cats are incredible musicians surrounded by incredible musicians.
I was blown away the first time i heard Snarky puppys lingus. Never heard of anything like that before . Love love lingus❤
I know what you mean by the drums captivating you even if you don't consider it your favorite instrument. A good drummer is a force to be reckoned with and you have to pay attention to every beat of the performance. Awesome Jazz all around and a little funk for spice. Love your channel! Sub
This entire album is amazing. The album is recorded live. This was the closer. Start with track one. All have videos.
Ty for this reaction. Snarky Puppy is amazing! 🔥🔥🔥 Larnell Lewis is one of the best to ever do it! please react to more SP you won't be disappointed
One of my favorite drummers, Larnell Lewis back there working the kick foot and giving us those tasty taps on the skins & brass.
Thanks for “expanding our horizons” in this video. I’ve heard this particular song more than I can count and I still thoroughly enjoy listening. Your reaction is priceless. Try some gospel music soon. Some of the Snarky musicians grew up in church. See what artists they’ve played for.
This song gives me big Watermelon Man feels.
Well....the beginning to middle did, haha. They traveled to another galaxy after that.
Larnell Lewis is the drummer, and he’s by far my favorite drummer in the game right now. Fiercely inspiring behind the kit. Love the video!!
I COULD FEEL MY CREDIT SCORE GOING UP. I am dying 😂😂😂😂 that whole solo is a beautiful ride for sure
These guys and gals give me hope. Phenomenal musicians.
You actually should listen yo the whole album, that is this exact performance session they recorded and which you can find in its entirety on youtube. Lingus being the last piece.
Amazing album.
_Tiny_ point; Lingus is the penultimate music track on Snarky Puppy's own "We Liked it Here" playlist
Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, and Happy, Healthy New Year.
Glad you brought this to your listeners Polo! Thank you for sharing the love
You are not 'pissing off' me. This is great reacting -- and great music, excellent combination.
Imagine being paid to listen to that Cory Henry solo! Congratulations, sir!
If you haven't already, PLEASE, check out Dirty Loops' "Thiller". You'll be pleasantly surprised (and that might be an understatment). I GUARANTEE IT!!!
Man there’s some really good Larnell Lewis (drummer) content here on UA-cam… his City Lights solo, hearing a song once and writing drums to it, hearing a Metallica song once and playing it… he’s a real pro 👏
