I Appear Missing is easily my favorite song of all time and this album is my favorite album of all time, everything about this album to me is perfect and just gorgeous
Kalopsia by definition suits the song (and the album as a whole) so perfectly. It’s the delusion that something is beautiful. I consider it to be the centerpiece of this album
Considering that Josh brushed against death so painfully, it just puts the themes of mortality into even greater perspective. Also I should say that the entire Songs for the Deaf crew actually came back on "If I Had a Tail", and Alex Turner actually did the little "control the dice" bit at the end. Dave Grohl actually did most of the drumming on this LP cause their mainstay Joey Castillo left the band in the process of recording, afterwards they hired Jon Theodore, who's also a beast. Trent also wound up collabing with them earlier on in the track "Era Vulgaris", which surprisingly didn't even make it onto the album of the same name, and you can basically only listen to it on youtube
@@akwilson1676 I don’t think he should only react to things we’d expect him to love. I’m personally very curious how he would feel about Era Vulgaris, not every song on it is my favorite, but the ones I like I love!
Such an underrated album. EV and Lullabies are my favorite Queens albums, but they often get overshadowed by their more popular work (which is still great). I’m just a sucker for the more melodic and weird stuff.
Fun fact, Kalopsia only exists cause of Alex Turner, Josh called him and asked for something beautiful, and Alex said "Kalopsia", and then Josh asked "What the fuck does that mean?"
This reminds me of when you first reacted to The Black Parade. A rock album hasn't elicited this sense of wonder and thorough enjoyment from you since likely The New Abnormal, and it's great to see. I'm really glad you enjoyed it, it's one of the very few great alt rock records of the 2010s.
I’d love to see that as well, but he heard No One Loves me a few times and he disliked it even more with each listen, he also absolutely despised Reptiles unfortunately :(
I remember watching em perform it on Austin City Limits, and a couple times the crowd chuckled at song titles and such. Josh didn't seem to love that... but I felt the same way when I first heard certain track titles and the chorus to If I Had A Tail (I'd own the night) here... I mean it does kinda conjure a fruity image of Cats the Musical or something. Still, QotSA, Kyuss, TCV, there's something to love in all of em. Vultures' Scumbag Blues is straight up Cream circa 1967.
It was nice to have the chance of catching you live on twitch while you were listening to the album. It's so nice to see the live reaction of someone that is listening for the first time to one of my favourite albums and enjoying it so much. It's a great feeling.
It was Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner who came up with the song title. Frontman Josh Homme told NME: "I called him one day a few years ago, when I was first starting to think about the possibility of getting to make a record and said 'hey man, give me a good line.'" "He hit me back and he was like "kalopsia", and I said "kalopsia, what the hell's that?" and he said "it's a condition wherein everything seems more beautiful than it actually is." Homme produced the Arctic Monkey's 2009 album, Humbug and also sung backup on their track "All My Own Stunts." Turner returned the favour by singing back up on the …Like Clockwork track, "If I Had A Tail."
Suchhhhhh a good album. Probably the last one that was on repeat for months at a time in my car back when it came out. Consistently amazing, still get chills at different points here now watching the reaction.
Not sure if too many people here would've heard it but Diorama by Silverchair is a MUST listen album - Silverchair often get overlooked as a Nirvana clone who went pop but those here in Australia know just how incredible of a record Diorama is from start to finish. Particularly when hearing the story of Daniel Johns' arthritis that came on right before they began touring it and the US record label's threats to shelve the album because it wasn't "Silverchair enough". One of the greatly under-appreciated albums of the 2000s.

Glad you enjoyed this album. I think you 100% "got" it. Homme is one of the best *songwriters* in rock. He has a real command of the rock& roll mythos, imagery, etc. Agree about Alex Turner, too.

I need to revisit this album. I remember not liking it as much as some other QOTSA albums at the time, but given that back then I was in the middle of leaving an abusive relationship while dealing with severe depression and alcohol abuse, I think subconsciously this album just hit way too close to home.
