Agreed, that Ruiner is the best song on the album. Adrian Belew's (ex-King Crimson) guitar solo late is such a nice touch, too, just as catchy as the rest of the song, but tripper in the sense that you can just lose yourself in it for awhile.

Hey Brad if its any interest to you, Chris Vrenna, NIN's drummer was my audio software teacher in college and he told us all about the recording of this album. The band was living in the Sharon Tate house for the two years they were writing and recording this album. They would be visited occasionally by Manson cultists who would take pictures of the house. They'd also be visited by fans of the band and they'd have a beer or do some coke. The whole pig motif on the album comes from the images of the Sharon Tate house taken on the crime scene right after Tate's murder, when the cultists had used her blood to write things on the door and walls calling the police Pigs, and I believe they also left a severed pig head behind.

just a note/tidbit: the first song on this album the first track “Mr. Self Destruct” is a direct reference to the first track on Soft Cell’s 1984 album ‘This Last Night In Sodom’(also called “Mr. Self Destruct”).
I think anyone can admit- it’s a fantastic title.
NIN used to cover “Sex Dwarf” for their live shows, and of course, a cover of “Memorabilia” was used for the B side on the “Closer” single. Trent’s a big fan, needless to say. you can hear their influence in a lot of places in his music, IMO.

Maybe it's just because I've seen the video for it so many times, or maybe it's the lyrical content, but everything in "Closer" feels very _organic_ to me, like a melding of meat and organs and maybe some surgical equipment like an EKG and a bone saw.

I was like 14 when this came out and of course loved it, but didn’t really think much of the lyrics being a kid still. I was listening to it on my Discman at Christmas at my grandparents house. My uncle comes over and asks if he can hear what I’m listening to. He put the headphones on and listened for a minute. Now he is extremely Christian and he just looked at me concerned and asked why I felt the need to listen to this kind of music. He was genuinely frightened and I still laugh about it to this day. I don’t remember how i responded to him.

I listened to this album for the first time today, not knowing that you had made this video. Man, I was not prepared. I had just finished listening to Pretty Hate Machine for the third time. Of course, I was already familiar with Hurt, but I still somehow was not prepared for what was in store. PHM really does not prepare you. To put it simply, The Downward Spiral is easily one of the most affecting first listens I've ever had. I had a moment during that lethal combination of Big Man With a Gun and A Warm Place. I swear, I almost had to turn the album off and collect myself before moving forward. I didn't, though, but almost!

Loved the review, hated that you split it into 2 parts. It;s probably just me, but Closer was so overplayed when this first came out that I can't get behind it as the best track. The Becoming is the one I listen to on repeat. Maybe it's because it's more relatable? "The me that you know, he had some second thoughts; He's covered with scabs, He is broken and sore; The me that you know, He doesn't come around much; That part of me, Isn't here anymore." Hard to get better than that. There's also a stripped down (no electronics) version of this that blows me away every time I listen to it.

Oh that's weird, you just articulated something I've kinda felt in a way for ages and in some of the music I listen to. That 'confidence in this fucked up feeling' hit for me. Like, after a certain point of just ceaseless un-relieved fury, you hit this kind of zen point where you feel nigh-unstoppable in your nihilism. Course, you still have no goals or outward reason to continue to exist, but its a nice feeling in the moment.
