Just wanted to add- I'm a spanish speaker, and the radio snippet (more like mexican radio and not spanish radio technically) in the outro of No One Knows goes a little something like this:
Good afternoon, gentlemen and ladies, here is the DJ Héctor Bonifacio Echeverría Cervantes de la Cruz Arroyo Rojas. This is Radio Quetzalcoatl, the station where rock lives and never dies. We'll listen to a couple of tracks by Queens of the Stone Age, first we'll listen to First it Giveth. Such impressive and fearsome music, and now you'll really see, you'll see, you'll see, here it goes!

Honestly surprised Hanging Tree was your least favorite of the first half, but I take it from this video that you're not a big fan of Mark Lanegan's vocal delivery. This album has three singers: Josh Homme (also the guitarist), Nick Oliveri (bassist), and Mark, who did Song For the Dead and Hanging Tree (and also God is in the Radio on the 2nd half). So that's why there's some varied vocal deliveries throughout this album. Since you seem to like Josh's voice the most, I feel like you'll enjoy some of their later albums, since after this album Josh is the only singer.
Also, that amazing drumming? Dave Grohl.

  • @Simpobee
    @Simpobee 4 роки тому +115

Oh hey this is fun. Lookit all the comments, hot dang! OK, sorry but I feel like doing A Big Comment
    -----
    - Although it has stabilised in recent times, QOTSA was a bit of an ever-changing lineup, to keep things interesting and more experimental than your traditional kinda rock band. This was mainly by design rather than people falling out, although that's part of it..
    - Here you got your man Joshua Homme, who is the main guy when it comes to Queens.
Hanging Tree singer is Mark Lanegan, interesting dude, Mr Gravel Voice. Before QOTSA, Homme was a guitar player in Lanegan's grunge-era band, Screaming Trees. Love his work in Twilight Singers, but I digress.
Screamy singer is Nick Olivieri, who was a big part of the band's energy of the time, but had to leave because he was a bad boy.
And of course Davey Grohlton on the tubs.
And lots of friends doing pieces here and there, including....
The radio bits! They kinda help the album flow along, give it a sense of momentum, as well as being a semi-concept of a drive from LA to the desert, the band's home away from home, Joshua Tree.
    - That weird Song 0 is a Very Secret track, that most people of the time didn't know about. You had to play the CD, then rewind to before the start of Track 1 to find it!
    - About the mix of heaviness and not so heavy, Homme felt his previous bands were a bit monotonous. "I wanted to make something that girls could dance to, y'know?"
    ----
Glad you're digging, well worth listening with no pauses in your own time, I feel like it benefits from keeping up that momentum all the way through. I love listening to full albums on a walk or a run, might have to do that for this album!

As far as the heavy music and the soft singing, Josh Homme once said something like "Rock music should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls." And it's actually probably my favorite thing about the band. And the songs where you didn't like the singing, that was a guest singer, Mark Lanegan. So you don't like Mark Lanegan, lol. So, a bit of backstory for you brad.
Songs for the Deaf is the 3rd QOTSA album. The first two were a bit artsy, super alternative, very non-mainstream. I love the first two, they're masterpieces, but it's fair to say that they weren't huge commercial successes.
So album three comes around and the record label is demanding something more commercial. Songs for the Deaf is that album. The bassist (Nick Oliveri) coming into the album felt that the songs were too loose, too different and that it could really do with a concept to hold it together. So, here's the story:
Songs for the deaf is about the drive from LA to Joshua tree. This was a drive that Josh Homme (the lead guitarist and singer) was well acquainted with, as he lived in LA and was from Joshua Tree. The Album is him driving, picking up the different stations as he goes. The different radio stations are not really particular locations, but many of them poke fun at particular radio stations or hosts. There's a great video from Middle 8 about this if you want more info ( ua-cam.com/video/PgW8UolRrl4/v-deo.html )
It was a huge success and really thew QOTSA into the spotlight. You mentioned loving the drumming on the album, all I can say is Dave Grohl.
Finally, you mentioned the sharp production, that's courtesy of legendary producer Eric Valentine. Again there's a good video on this.
Loved the video, really interesting to see your reaction to one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands.

My favorite part about the album's production is that they recorded the cymbals and the drums separately so that they could compress them differently and get a really punchy drum sound but still have a really clear cymbal sound. The reason the riffs sound different and unique is that when Josh Homme was learning guitar, he would take scales and take out some notes and put in ones that werent part of the scale, thats why his sound in QOTSA and Kyuss (please do a video on Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss, its a banger of an album) sounds so unique. They're HIS riffs, they're HIS scales, and distinctive.

So what’s cool about this album brad is that it has a lot of different people who helped produce this including 3 different vocalist (Josh homme= the main softer guy +lead guitarist, Mark Lanegan= the gravely graveyard guy, and Nick Oliveri +bassist= the more dry sounding and screaming guy), Dean Ween on some guitar tracks and lots of Josh’s other friends. On top of that a lot of the songs came from different ideas over the years (like millionaire was first recorded on the desert sessions 4 years before this album came out and same goes for hangin tree and the riff for no one knows). The producer of this album Eric Valentine also gave some insight on the album about how they mixed the guitars which is a cool video to watch (tl;dr they mixed shit loads of crappy amps and loud vintage ones to get the sound with only using the overdriven sound of the mids from the amps to get the loud distortion crisp). And on top of all this is that the main man Josh Homme produced Humbug which is ironic considering your reaction to each being drastically different lol.

So i thought i'd give you some context here, the album is structured to simulate a road trip through the california desert, from los angeles to joshua tree and thats why it has those weird radio skits, its to simulate the driver tuning into different radio stations as the trip progresses.
The narrators usually speak in a way to parody radio channels as you switch through stations in your way, like Klon radio "we sound more like everyone else, than anyone else" and other stuff.
Also i think every song is a reference to a city if im not mistaken but i could be wrong here.
