A small correction, if I may. The spring on the tensioner pushes the tensioner rod in, and the secondary plunger's spring pushes it in as space is made. The two wedges perpendicular to each other prevent the force of the chain from pushing the main plunger backward. So, as the chain wears the plunger goes in but cannot come back. Enjoying your videos. I ride an '87 model all year round. Fantastic wee beasts!!
I don’t think the intention was to create an adjustable tensioner. I think the original thread was damaged somehow and a fix was made instead of a new spare tensioner so the original threaded piece was welded on and in order to install it they made a new thread.
Possible. I have actually managed to break one of these in exactly the way you describe. This is a way to fix it, but I would have bought a replacement 🤣
I’m actually about to do the same thing to a ‘95 zx600r. Those Kawasaki tensioners are hot pieces of shit. The bolt added was no doubt to keep the tension on the chain cuz the way it’s designed, the springs aren’t strong enough to keep the pins from sticking in the shaft. Having two wedges of steel to transfer pressure at 90 degrees is absolutely idiotic.

Love your videos! I’m rebuilding one myself right now and can’t find many informational videos like this. Please keep it up!
I will try to post more. Sometimes I just don't find the time, but I do try. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I've heard of this cam chain tensioner 'upgrade' on other kawasaki's. But can't remember why they do it 🤔
I can only imagine to put more preload on a slack chain? Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me 👌🏻
