Great video thanks. The W169 A-Class Merceds Benz has timing chain problems and is difficult to replace the chain. There are plenty of UA-cam videos showing the timing chain cover with a slotted hole in it due to a worn timing chain rubbing a hole in it. People usually notice an oil leak from the cover before they think the noise is an issue. If the guides need to be replaced the engine needs to be dropped.
Brand new timing chain set in my car, of course new oil as well, the engine is still not a quiet one. Timing chains are noisey buggers compared to a conventional timing belt.
Awesome video I have 2013 dodge avenger se 2.4 ,we changed the head gasket for oil leak and decided to change timing chain and tensioner as well. Timing was fine before head gasket . But now its slipping and has a loss of power. We didnt change guides or phasers or water pump. Water pump is not on timing chain , its outside the timing cover connected to serpentine belt .we changed all sensors . i got code p0016 - no correlation bank 1 sensor A Why is my timing slipping ?
Thank you for the video, I had a transmission full service, changed the throttle body and I still hear the clicking noose very mildly, and when the car is cold I have a hard time for the speed to pick up, no shaking, it just won’t pick up speed right away, after a while its ok.
If the timing chain was stretched (not broken), would it cause the valves to be bent (if it really broke in a real sense, then of course it would have caused a number of valves to be bent...) so what are the common engine components to be replaced beside a new timing kit?
I have a ‘13 Impala with the 3.6 LFX engine. I know those 3.6 engines in general were known for timing chain issues. I’ve not had issues with mine…. Yet, but I’m OCD with oil changes and checking the level.. My question is, in general why don’t manufacturers put some kind of anti back flow valve on the tensioners where the oil pressure doesn’t bleed off when the engine sits? I’m not a mechanic but it seems like that might solve some of the cold start wear issues.
timing chain is a bit loose, about 1/2" or so, on the right side only, seen from the front of the engine, is there a way to adjust it to make it tight ?
@@et5256 the slack disappeared after I ran the engine for a bit ...no clue as to what happened ... maybe the chain tensioner adjusted the slack by itself ... while running there is no clack-clack, no noise ... the engine starts easy, usually on the 1st or second turn ...
I have a 2018 F150 5.0 with rattling on cold start, Ford says the problem is within the timing system. I had it in for servicing about 7 months ago and they said I had to purchase a new Dipstick because the OEM part was revised. The new dipstick is longer with the hash marks being wider apart from the original. After watching your video I now have to wonder if the proper oil levels were kept within the engine (due to the old OEM dipstick) that has ultimately led to this timing issue which has huge costs involved to repair.
I was removing the crankshaft to get to the head on 3.7 jeep and I used two rachets to get the bolts off the top crankshaft sprocket I held the driver side still while trying to crack the passenger side bolt and it turned messing all marks up what can i do
I would like ask, why i can hear Timing chain noise when the car reaches it operational temperature but there is no noise when the engine is cold . This usually happens when the engine has run 2k to 3k kilometers after an oil change Please explain.
@@Teknakill guess what, that noise has disappeared, just using slightly thicker oil,b4 was 15w30 but now using 15w40 and everything is going flawlessly. Haven't changed the tensioner or anything, only the oil.
@@damanijohnson2500 I replaced the timing chain tensioner and also had the clutch replaced along with the exhaust all welded up properly and its running amazing again and I don't notice any knocking sounds, I guess it was clutch related perhaps. I have a diesel Ssangyong Kyron with the Mercedes engine. Cold start super quiet until the engine gets up to operating temp then it starts to rattle?? Could this be the tensioner?
My 2012 Kia won’t start . Mechanic said the timing chain jumped . Got the ac compressor replaced then when I started it , it was loud , dropped my kids at school . Drove home . Came out later tried to warm it up and it cut off . Never came back on . The timing jumped . Are the valves damaged ?
Not really, sometimes the chain might also be damages and streched. With this you may risk the chain skipping, decline in engine performance, weird noises... Which can destroy the inner motor parts and the engine might seize which is really expensive to repair.
3.3 L V6 going up hill very slow but accelerating perfectly downhill fast speed , but trouble on acceleration on gas pedal. no issues with losing coolant or fluid ? .
No noise from the chain when at idle, however, under moderate to extreme acceleration only then does the chain sound like it’s flopping apart. Bad tensioner or chain? Pain in the ass to change the chain, but wondering if it’s worth it to just try to put in a new tensioner first.
hi i have a polo vivo 1.4 when i cold start it it has that rattling noise sound like disiel engine but its petrol the car is on 90k km is possible it can be timing?
So I don’t hear any clacking on a cold start or when I’m driving but when my car is in park idling normal (warmed up) i hear a small clacking sound I don’t have a problem in accelerating while driving or from a dead stop
I timing back the engine top dead center n on 4e but engine is not getting compression but i took off the cam pulley to change the seal so dnt know it the cam pulley went on wrong
At the first signs of what he mentions including a reduction in miles per gallon. IF you change your full synthetic oil every 5-8,000 you probably will never have to. I just rolled 400,000 miles on my 2007 Civic and it is the original chain and only recently am I hearing an extra sound at cold start that I am sure is not the alternator nor serpentine tensioner pulley. Time to do it!!!
How about you only hear the rattle for 1-2 sec on cold start only (15-24hrs engine rest) after 1-2 sec its gone even after you immediately turn it off and on its gone. You'll have to wait for the next morning to hear it.

I do not think it could bend valves just from just being stretched out.. I mean a chain can only stretch so far before it breaks

I did my timing on my 01 Tacoma. Having acceleration issues. Timing marks are a possible culprit but I’ll have to verify.
