I've been a musician forever and probably the biggest challenges to playing in a band and playing original music is that you always have the issue of egos that can mess everything up. Someone overplays or plays too loud. They want to be in the spotlight. I would guess this issue is what prevents most bands from making it. And the more members you have, the greater the chance of having a problematic ego. But all these band members listed here in the Oh Hellos obviously set their egos aside order to make beautiful music. This tells you so much of what they're probably like as people. You know they're each quality people that you'd want to be around and get to know.
A while back I was at a concert in Austin and a really nice guy came up and started a conversation with me. I asked him what he did and he said “I play violin for a band called The Oh Hellos.” Cool to see him looking just as happy here as he was talking with me. Rare to meet such a genuinely nice person.
Michael Heredia I met Maggie through band at region tryouts (or something similar, it’s been a while) in high school and had a huge crush on her haha. He current banjo player is someone I was friends with from marching band too
Well I am a musician from Rowlett TX and this song is such an important influence on my freshman college years I wish I could personally tell them how at peice this song has made me feel.
I don't know any of them or any of you but I really like their music and based only on this first experience of them, I suspect all of you that spent any time with them are good people that shared pleasant times.
He says that the performance of Exeunt is more impressive with the full setup, but this version is my favorite. The energy it holds is more raw and personal, and the full group singing "I have set my mind and my will" helps release that energy. It has been building through the song as the reasons to leave have become more and more clear, and with that burst of strength and resolve, the clarity of the final "I am Leaving" is properly driven home I have nothing but love for this song, and this version is the best I have heard
For me, the music by The Oh Hellos is just like a warm hug, a cup of tea on a rainy day, the smell of the rain and the forest, everything healing combined. I alway start to cry when I listen to them but afterwards I just feel like I'm glued back together. It's amazing what music can do to humans, and I'm amazed how much this music in particular does for me. This was wonderful to watch :)
this comment hits pretty hard, you seem like a wonderful human being. (and don't worry, you aren't the only one who cries because of everything this music makes you feel :') )
Yo I was just gonna comment the same thing and I thought "This is from 2015, there's no way that has been commented yet" and here you are, coming through. My eyes widened as soon as I heard him say the words.
There's usually a mic for each ellectric instrument. Its right in front of their monitors, not shown by camera i think. They did a video where they show the mic setup.
Deadass, as much as classical stuff can be fun to play and learn, playing music you have a hand in writing and playing music which you can *actually play* is a lot more enjoyable, I'd be raving in his place 😂
I've been depressed and void of feeling for months, and this music brought warmth to my chest and tears of joy to my eyes. I can't explain why, but I am thankful.
Great band. They've somehow managed to carve their own sound in the era of Mumford & Suns, Of Monsters of Men, Lumineers, and many other failed to be known indie folk bands. This was a nice, genuine performance
AlexSuperTramp took the words out of my mouth! I love these bands! Great message songs; normal looking people who can just touch my heart with their incredible talent. Today, all other “music” is a waste of my time.
All the bands you mentioned but this one is pretty well known. If I mention any of them to anyone, there's a big chance they know atleast one of them, if not all of them. Edit: I just realized your comment is 4 years old, but atleast I can proudly say i knew of them all 4 years ago. :) Gotta thank spotify artist/playlist radio for that one actually.
This is one of the most soulful Tiny Desk concerts. They are all incredible but this one stands out. Still coming back to it 2 years later. What a performance! Always leave me speechless. I found my favorite band through Tiny Desk.
keep coming back to this video when I'm not feeling my best. the songs themselves are fantastic, but the looks on their faces as they perform really drives that feeling of safety and community home. obsessed w these guys
The violinist hypes me up so freaking hard. Let’s GOOOOO!!! That is how I want to live my life. Everyday. Just spazzing out hardcore to the moments that overload my feelings and senses with too much joy that I burst at the seams into dance and body spasm rages.

Those tremolos during the vocal interlude at 8:30 almost brought me to tears. I never noticed them until today even though I listen to this concert often.
Wow! It's amazing how they sound just as good live in this video as they do on the record. I wish more bands these days would share the same passion for variety in instrumentals. It would be really neat to hear some praise songs.

I love that you didn't overestimate in your statement, like saying "I'm pretty sure I'm 99% of the views on this video." I mean let's be real. Good estimation is always appreciated. :)
hands down one the best tiny desks ever made, the amount of warmth and vibes this video gives makes me come back here so many times in calm nights and rainy days it just never fails to uplift me and leave me with a sort of fuzzy feeling I've grown way too fond of
My heart is so full right now! I saw them live at Wooly's in Iowa. One of the most dynamic performances I've been to! They put passion in every song. None are mediocre. My wife couldn't go because she was sick and she's the one that got me into them. Tyler and Maggie graciously allowed me to record a video of them saying hi to her and saying how bummed they were that she couldn't come. I became husband of the year that night!!! Haha

For the 16 minutes and 37 seconds I listen to this, the world is ultimately a better place. Thank you Tiny Desk for introducing me to the Oh Hellos, and thank you for all the musical adventures you have provided through the years.
Seems like there would be ZERO chance of not liking these guys if I could party with them. I love how she manages to smile so much while singing so lovely.
A few years back, my High School chorus teacher played this video for the class and introduced me to one of the most talented bands of the decade. I'll always be grateful for that.
Went through something of a hard breakup a a few days ago, and I've just now discovered these guys yesterday. The amount of comfort dear wormwood specifically has provided has been immeasurable, and is really evidence of Gods timing.
I have a confession. I clicked the video tonight and immediately started to skip to like the dawn. I stopped and realized the first song is a good lead. And then realized this whole set is well orchistrated. And I need it in my life now. Especially at 3 a.m. and highly under the influence.
Saw them live at Bowery and they are the coolest, happiest group of people ever. Love 'em! Their new album is fantastic. Also, just in case you wanna skip around: Hello My Old Heart 00:00, Like the Dawn 05:43, Exeunt 12:54
Tiny Desk does such an amazing job of exposing us to so many different kinds of music, and the chemistry inside their tiny studio is just as magnetic and electrifying as a live concert. This is so beautiful. Thank you for everything you do!
Since it isn't already listed in the video, the names of the performers are:

I can totally tell the 2 lead singers are brother and sister because their harmonies are fantastic and they sound amazing together :)

You made me pay attention to him and then I saw how EXCITED he was during the last song hahaha
I went to college with most of these guys. The accordion player was one of roommates for a year! Great group of musicians and even better people.

I emailed Tiny Desk almost a year ago and recommended they invite The Oh Hello's! Never got a response, still taking credit though
You should. Thank you from suggesting them. Bob Boilen is a fraud.
The hero we all needed but didn’t deserve!!!

i've gotta give credits to the sound guy. only a couple mic's and it sounds so good, every single desk concert

Their sound guy is always fantastic!
Okay but the violinist looks like he's having the time of his life :D
Saw them once in concert, was directly in front of his area on stage and he was fiddling his heart out and causing bedlam for like 2 hours straight.
The entire band looks like they want to explode with energy but can't haha

Ugh like the dawn just gets me every damn time. And I love it.
I want 1/10th of the energy and joy of that Violin player
Matthew Hagerman from Austin, Texas.
Man, that guy can sing. What a pure voice
Oh my gosh, this is just incredible... I can't describe how wonderful this is.
I've been to their concert and the violinist has his arm around me omgomgomg
Having seen them live, they’re even more energetic and awesome during a concert but man, I still can’t get over how raw and pure their music is
Seems like there would be ZERO chance of not liking these guys if I could party with them. I love how she manages to smile so much while singing so lovely.
That little smile on her face at 9:32 :) how adorable. Loved this entire performance, truly magical!
What a crazy ensemble, everyone adds something important and together it's a masterpiece.
A few years back, my High School chorus teacher played this video for the class and introduced me to one of the most talented bands of the decade. I'll always be grateful for that.
i've come back to listen to this so many times over the years. makes me feel so happy
Went through something of a hard breakup a a few days ago, and I've just now discovered these guys yesterday. The amount of comfort dear wormwood specifically has provided has been immeasurable, and is really evidence of Gods timing.
They look like they are enjoying themselves as part of the music. It’s beautiful.
I have a confession. I clicked the video tonight and immediately started to skip to like the dawn. I stopped and realized the first song is a good lead. And then realized this whole set is well orchistrated. And I need it in my life now. Especially at 3 a.m. and highly under the influence.
Oh and the whole point was....
Thank you NPR and thank you Oh Hellos. I appreciate ya
Saw them live at Bowery and they are the coolest, happiest group of people ever. Love 'em! Their new album is fantastic.
Also, just in case you wanna skip around: Hello My Old Heart 00:00, Like the Dawn 05:43, Exeunt 12:54
Please give the violin player a big hug for me. It reminds me of the passion I used to have for music.
Tiny Desk does such an amazing job of exposing us to so many different kinds of music, and the chemistry inside their tiny studio is just as magnetic and electrifying as a live concert. This is so beautiful. Thank you for everything you do!
The way their voice melds with violin creates such beautiful music almost like it's a single instrument and not 2.
