I was talking to a sound engineer friend of mine earlier this week, he said something along the same lines. It would be cool to see a little behind the scenes with the sound engineer/s.
My dad have been in the music industry for well over 40 years and heard everything. When I discovered the Lumineers, I watched the entire concept-album of the Ballad of Cleopatra. Then I called my dad and said, "You need to see this." He went in and we watched the entire thing. My dad isn't very emotional, he's 70 now, and he was taught to hold it all inside. He smiled, he cried, he laughed, and in the end, he didn't had to told me this was the most moving thing he had ever hear or seen. I just knew. There are many bands in this world - a lot are better on paper, have better equipment, and play in big stadiums, in front of bigger audiences, and rack up hit after hit. But the Lumineers are special. Not because they're virtuosos nor because their songs speak for our generation, not because they are sexy or weird or cool. The Lumineers are legendary because their music, quite simply, sounds like life.

Probably not a coincidence, since the band has talked about how processing the overdose death of the drummer's older brother (and singer's best friend) was a source of inspiration for some of their early music
In 2012, my friend gave me an extra ticket to see Brandi Carlile in our little resort town of 1000 people in northern WI. He told me he was going so he could see the opener, a band I've never heard of called The Lumineers. I swear my friend and I were the youngest people in the audience but once The Lumineers came out they had the whole audience singing, even at one point with a three-part harmony. After the show, they were standing around outside the venue awkwardly so my friend and I bought their CD and got it signed by them. I ripped that CD straight to my MP3 player and listened to it that summer on repeat while biking to my job washing dishes at a restaurant. I don't listen to them as much as I used to but that first album always brings me back.
I'd be honored if some Lumineers & Tiny Desk fans who appreciate the 90s acoustic era would take a listen to my piano & vocal performances of LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows, SHE'S A BRICK by Ben Folds Five, and Mmm Mmm Mmm by the CRASH TEST DUMMIES on my YT channel in tribute to 3 great mid/late 90s standards. 4:33 Thank you for Leader of the landslide. When the song was released I couldn't stop listening to it and I was like "THEY GET IT". I cried a lot. It was cathartic. I think something changed for me. I needed it. Thank you.
I SAW THIS AND I STARTED SHAKING, CRYING, AND JUST IN UTTER AWE. Thanks Tiny Desk. Please get Bon Iver, Ben Rector, and Kaleo to do a concert! You won't regret it
Leader of the landslide always gets me on the verge of tears, and just hearing the passion behind it in a live recording shows such raw powerful emotion
If you have had any substance abuse in your life/family, The leader of the landslide is like a trip to the therapist. The Lumineers, healing pain with songs. Magic.
Wesley seems like such a real guy. That’s one of the reasons I love their music so much, it’s genuine & paints poetic visuals of actual hardships that a lot of people go through. I just love them so much
leader of the landslide will always rock me to the core. This is a song that speaks to the soul of many. These are the songs that need to be sang. Thank you Lumineers
I've never seen a band so enthusiastic about their music. All smiles for every member. It really makes it a joy to see this band perform. A lot of heart, and it shows. Looking for shows in my area, post-covid of course.
It is amazing to see how they can play different instruments, they are musicians, they love music, they make me feel that the real music is not lost yet. Thank you Lumineers for making this piece of art. You are awesome!!!!
Absolutely top notch. They're with DuelTone an indie studio that allows them to keep their artistic integrity and just make their art. It's such a genuine, raw, amazing sound they have.
I love how the other singer in the background is so into the music. It seems like he's feeling or has felt the pain the album talks about. The way he harmonises with the lead singer. So raw
I’m a functioning alcoholic, struggling, and so much to relate to in the 2nd song “Leader Of The Landslide”....now I’m washing dishes with my tears, , strange how it feels like a good kind of hurt...I think everyone knows at least one on their life but it’s more socially accepted than any other addiction out there, yet joked more about than any other. by accident I discovered this group on youtube some years ago... now I realize that it wasn't an accident, it was a revelation ! A gift from the universe!
Always loved their music but never had the opportunity to watch them until now. The band has such beautiful chemistry...there is so much love for each other and the art in that room.
I found the Lumineers completely by mistake; literally just scrolling through Americana/Folk on Spotify. I cried at “Stubborn Love”, “Ophelia”, “Angela”, “Cleopatra”, etc. etc. This band could write about trying to fix a broken toaster and bring me to tears. It’s just so perfectly earthy, and natural. Other country singers sound like the parts of life that test you, or bring you more joy than you’ve ever felt before. The Lumineers just sound like living.
Heard songs of theirs before without knowing who they were-I'll never forget the name now! These voices; these lyrics; the mastery of instruments all around-man, too good!
Teared up at Leader of the landslide, I’m so glad they played it. Was one of the most powerful sounds I’ve listened too from they’re albums. Love this band.
I absolutely love how they get so into it they look at each other and smile while playing their instruments because it’s so soulful. Music is pure art!
This may very well be my favourite NPR music tiny desk concert of all! Having had the precious opportunity to see The Lumineers live late last year in Lisbon, this felt like living that amazing night all over again. For that I thank you NPR Music for bringing this amazing band on. They always sound amazing and their energy is unique and special. Love them. Stay safe everyone!
I had the pleasure of watching these guys in Paris a few years back... Wesley jumped into the crowd and had the whole floor bouncing, it was one of the best experiences of my life and I'll always look back on it with happy memories.
I keep coming back to The Lumineers, what an amazing soulful and uplifting sound, seen them in concert twice and look forward to May 2025 when they are back in the UK!
Love the energy you all bring. It's authentic. The guy in the piano, mean playing the piano, was so inspired to raise it to another level, with no shoes. He choose to be connected to the earth in his own way.

Awesome performance. So gutted I didn’t get to see them earlier this year. I got the ticket notification too late and the concert was sold out in no time :( btw NPR, please get Gregory Alan Isakov!
Missing Bon Iver, Nathaniel Rateliff w/ Gregory Alan Isakov, and The Lumineers concerts because of COVID-19, but at least I am healthy. Can't get too upset.
I know!!! I got tickets to see them in Houston but it might get cancelled due to the corona. The good thing is that they will be back in Austin in September and they will have Gregory there which would be even be more amazing.
I saw them live in Dublin up close in 2016 and when I say it’s an experience I still think about. They’re incredible live and I just can’t get enough of his voice. Thanks for this tiny desk!💜
This makes me so happy, they are my favorite band ever and due to covid19 I lost my chance to see them live but that doesn't mean I can't still appreciate their music through amazing content like this video.
Yeah, his voice is just naturally expressive. He doesn't even have the "ideal" singing voice, similar to Chris Martin. But it just fits with the intrsuments.

This is so sweet. I felt it through my bones.
Steven Anderson I was looking for this comment😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

If you have had any substance abuse in your life/family, The leader of the landslide is like a trip to the therapist. The Lumineers, healing pain with songs. Magic.
"you can't ever love without crying"
The crickets and the rain outside...I'm crying. They are so free, and so beautiful, and happy.
Wesley seems like such a real guy. That’s one of the reasons I love their music so much, it’s genuine & paints poetic visuals of actual hardships that a lot of people go through. I just love them so much
I see NPR I click. I see Lumineers I button smashhhhhh.
leader of the landslide will always rock me to the core.
Better than coffee on this dreary rainy Monday!! I was so hoping to hear Ho Hey. Cheers to NPR!!
Loverly weather here cooped up UK

stubborn love is one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. the lyrics are just ❤️
She's multitasking and it's amazing to watch especially when you can see that she's passionate in what she does. I love this band so much!
She's really talented but I really miss the cellist girl
Neyla Pakarek
They sound like theyre having so much fun its impossible not to enjoy
It is amazing to see how they can play different instruments, they are musicians, they love music, they make me feel that the real music is not lost yet. Thank you Lumineers for making this piece of art. You are awesome!!!!
The Lumineers hold a special place in my heart 🥺
It’s been a long time since i listen to The Lumineers while i lay on the floor. Thanks NPR.
These guys don’t miss a single note. Amazing. Very talented and dedicated musicians and songwriters, what a gift.
So raw
absolutely the most raw, unique and talented band I’ve seen in a really long time.
The writings on the wall.
Rikimaru17 sending prayers my dude!
@Rikimaru17 I feel your pain. After losing my third brother, I picked up the bottle, & now I can't put it down.
Tamara Wolf sorry to hear that...pain can motivate or it can devastate, one is easier to be allow than the other. Wish it was easier.
sending love to you my friend.
@@tams4008 and to you aswell. i wish you all the best. I've been helping people out that were in similar situations through particular emotional techniques. if you are interested please contact me on Facebook "Lucas Sendlhofer" I'd love to help. lots of love
They all play off one another so perfectly, Leader of the Landslide was beautiful
I fell in love with Ophelia and haven't stopped listening! They are easily the best band of this era.
by accident I discovered this group on youtube some years ago... now I realize that it wasn't an accident, it was a revelation
!
A gift from the universe!
I have so many memories attached to this band that it breaks my heart every time I listen to them.
you wait 6 years for something...and its just perfect
The pianist is pure joy, my loooooooord
His voice is unmatched. Listening to him is a whole mood.
Dead sea would have fit so perfectly in this tiny desk concert.
Always loved their music but never had the opportunity to watch them until now. The band has such beautiful chemistry...there is so much love for each other and the art in that room.
8:41 “All I ever wanted was a mother for the first time; Finally I can see you as the leader of the landslide”
sarah allen I scrolled onto this post by chance as the lyric was being delivered. Thanks, that was cool.
@@rahawk69 me too - that was weird.
I am time travelling back from 2189 to let you know this is still the best Tiny Desk ever produced.
I cry every time I hear stubborn love. And I’m a forty something punk rocker.
I feel the same way, sttuborn love gets me everytime I hear it
Peanutbutter jellyfish ok
what a song - the opposite of love is indiference
I rarely listen to it exactly because of those emotions
They have too many great songs to count. But when Stubborn Love comes on, its impossible to think it's not their best.
Luke Taylor especially when it’s live, getting everyone involved like that is
awesome
Exactly !
totally
Agree.
Agree.
That drummer can play nearly EVERYTHING. Every time i watch i live performance he is playing a differente instrument.
Yeah jermiah is a music genius!
@@hodorhodor2427 indeed
I work at a homeless shelter in Oak Harbor WA and we listened to you guys together. We enjoyed your music and testimony. Thank you!
The lumineers take me to a roadtrip with my friends enjoying life and eachothers company
Tiny desk, one of the best things that ever happened to the internet
Heard songs of theirs before without knowing who they were-I'll never forget the name now! These voices; these lyrics; the mastery of instruments all around-man, too good!
this is one of the best if not the best tiny desk concert.
Make sure you listen to the Avett Brothers tiny desk
I haven’t watched a npr tiny desk that was disappointing
After listening 932913 times to Masego's one, I am not sure if I can agree with you hahah But this one is so great as well!
One of the best. Agreed.
Pretty sure that's what I say everytime
Teared up at Leader of the landslide, I’m so glad they played it. Was one of the most powerful sounds I’ve listened too from they’re albums. Love this band.
I absolutely love how they get so into it they look at each other and smile while playing their instruments because it’s so soulful. Music is pure art!
I absolutely adore the effect the crickets have in 'Leader of the Landslide', it feels so cozy.
Was hoping for Ophelia, but nonetheless, I am still happy
Ophelia actually the best)
Ophelia’s great. But they’re promoting their album III.
Im happy too. But i would've been over joyed had they played Ophelia
@@fosforus15 they couldve played Ophelia since they played stubborn love😔
I named my dachshund for that song :) it's my fav!
I had the pleasure of watching these guys in Paris a few years back... Wesley jumped into the crowd and had the whole floor bouncing, it was one of the best experiences of my life and I'll always look back on it with happy memories.
I keep coming back to The Lumineers, what an amazing soulful and uplifting sound, seen them in concert twice and look forward to May 2025 when they are back in the UK!
lockdown just got a bit less depressing!
Thanks tiny desk for inviting my favourite band😊
Leader of the Landslide always breaks my heart
The guitar in stubborn love sounds great here
Love how they switch from Gibson to.. Gibson :D
@@Reloaded202 ...or Guild to Guild ;)
We are talking about it.

Gregory alan isakov is what we need!!
Stubhub
Missing Bon Iver, Nathaniel Rateliff w/ Gregory Alan Isakov, and The Lumineers concerts because of COVID-19, but at least I am healthy. Can't get too upset.
I know!!! I got tickets to see them in Houston but it might get cancelled due to the corona. The good thing is that they will be back in Austin in September and they will have Gregory there which would be even be more amazing.
Yes!
I love how they put instrumenal songs in their albums. Patience and April are so beautiful ♥️
You know you’ve hit the pinnacle of your drumming career when you get an assistant.
The sound engineer for Tiny Desk is a genius
When the violin starts, I get the chills....every time.
I saw them live in Dublin up close in 2016 and when I say it’s an experience I still think about. They’re incredible live and I just can’t get enough of his voice. Thanks for this tiny desk!💜
This makes me so happy, they are my favorite band ever and due to covid19 I lost my chance to see them live but that doesn't mean I can't still appreciate their music through amazing content like this video.
same i was suppose to see them in may, super sad
@@baileighpatrick470 me too, in Texas. Would've been an amazing experience. But at least we still have something like this to watch
I can’t pinpoint just why this guys voice is so good
Very expressive voice, carries emotions well & knows its limitations just enough to push against them. Having good lyrics to sing helps, as well. :)
100% agree!
And he’s a great storyteller. Saw them in Houston 2017 and Wes’s stories were captivating.
Natural born singing voice.....can't be bought nor taught....simply beautiful
Yeah, his voice is just naturally expressive. He doesn't even have the "ideal" singing voice, similar to Chris Martin. But it just fits with the intrsuments.
Wesley Schultz is such a brilliant storyteller, songwriter, and singer. Saw them in Nashville and was the first time I ever cried at a concert.
My daughter and I bought tickets. Aint had the gift of witnessing your immense talent yet. God Bless you kids! Love & Peace !!!
Their first album is still one of my favorite albums ever.
