that part made my jaw drop and i got goosebumps, I'm pretty desensitized to murder cases at this point but something about that just made me so uncomfortable and sad. Like a constant reminder she is supposed to be getting up :-(
@@reilly4678 I'm the same, I never normally flinch, but I actually gasped out loud and looked away from my screen when I heard that 😣 has got to be one of the most chilling things I have ever heard
The beeping noise was obviously Kristin’s watch going off. That’s so incredibly eerie. Obviously Paul and his dad didn’t bury her very deep if they could hear it so clearly. That part was so disturbing.
HE WAS FOUND GUILTY!!! Justice has FINALLY been served for Kristin! May she rest in peace knowing that she was never given up on. I also hope that her family continues to finds peace.
I was born in San Luis Obispo and raised in Arroyo Grande. I remember seeing the billboard, I remember seeing Paul Flores in the grocery store and having my mom push me behind her and tell me not to make eye contact with him. The fact that he is behind bars at (least for now) gives me so much hope.
I’m from SM! It’s so wild to finally have some movement on this case (literally all thanks to Chris and zero credit to slopd even though they’ll take as much as they can get). I hope more than anything Kristin is found
Im born in slo and it's weird Kristen is like someone I grew up with but never knew. While still living and working in SLO listening to the in your own backyard podcast. It was a really eerie feeling to hear even more details that I've never heard before.
So much respect to Mary and her husband for keeping all the letters, keeping the earring and for getting a team to search the house when they were getting evicted. They didn't HAVE to do it, but they did and I respect that so much.
Amazing people, great intuition but even greater selflessness and integrity. If we could all think a little more like them the world would be a much safer place
Paul’s mother speaking about them “harassing” their family made my blood BOIL. how dare they say the Smart family has no right to know the truth? absolutely infuriating.
RIGHT?! Like, obvious evidence aside, the sheer audacity of those cold bastards to speak so dismissively about the pain that the Smart Family has endured... Seriously, "their henchman"? It's with attitude like that that makes me truly believe they're all guilty and are all rotten to the core. Selfish, selfish monsters.
And they were ALWAYS like that. It wasn’t like they were empathetic at least at first (because who the hell wouldn’t be for that family) but insisted their innocence but overtime got bitter. They were AWFUL from the jump.
Honestly, I was in the next room listening when I heard this and I came running in and looked at my screen and WHEW I got mad 😂 like, the AUDACITY of this woman knows no bounds. She knew. Ain't no way she didn't know.
She KNOWS her son killed Kristin she's just trying to play dumb and get police and the Smart family off her son's back. Typical case of a mom being ignorant about her son's obvious anger issues and violence which he already showed at a young age.
It makes me sick to hear these cases and the lack of police work. The incompetence of them all. I have never heard of not being able to search someone's property in a murder case. You get a search warrant for the property for a reason. So many years wasted cause of what?? I will never understand how our system can be so fucked. And where we're these eye witnesses all those years ago?? Did I miss something??
It's insanely ridiculous that a podcaster did a better investigation than the police. Huge props to Chris Lambert for bringing Kristin some justice, but wow this should've happened sooner.
@@yomama12546 it certainly seems like that’s the case. As if they were pretending to investigate. I don’t understand why the independent teams were able to go in & search everywhere except the obvious places the body was kept. It makes me think the judge might be in on it too.
Same. It literally felt like a gut punch. I can't even fucking imagine how it felt to be that family just hearing the watch go off and eventually just... stop.

I can't believe they never dug up the concrete in the flower bed though! If it was preventing flower growth then no harm to dig it up and also potentially find something to solve the case..
I can’t believe that Paul’s parents could know what their son did and STILL have the nerve to sue the Smart family? I can see where their sons narcissism and entitlement comes from.
The alarm going off at 4:20 is the creepiest thing I have ever heard in any true crime story and its also incredibly sad to think this poor girl was still trying to let people know where she was
It's so damn obvious Paul killed Kristin and his parents are protecting him. It's heartbreaking that she experienced this and everything her family has been put through. I'm glad Paul is behind bars.
Not only is the watch insanely creepy, but I can't believe police thought "oh wow, they've got newspaper clippings of this missing girl under their mattress. Totally normal." 🙄
I gotta say I have mad respect for Mary and her husband. They were like forget this landlord, I’m going to help the police solve a murder and they did everything they could for real.
His parents are even more disgusting. Literal enablers. Fucking disgusting. Helped him cover up an entire murder for 25 years. The entire family is disgusting. To file a lawsuit on a family that is clearly grieving because of your son is INSANE, especially since they knew he killed that girl. I have no words. This case made me SO mad. The police did not care as much as they should have. They could have solved this decades ago.
Goes to show you the lengths a guilty party will go to to try and point the finger of guilt away from them. Honestly, you would think the police would have seen right through this and got a search warrant immediately.
It must be so much more distressing for Kristin’s family that there’s a whole family involved in/aware of/covering up for this crime. Knowing there’s someone out there that killed your loved one is one thing, but knowing that an entire family made the decision to keep the truth from you is so horrific.
@@marthawatkins7184 That's just it; They don't feel, at all. No human emotion that extends beyond satisfying themselves. The terms psychopath and narcissist are thrown around a lot, but this "family" of murderers embodies those terms to a T.

I figure he didn’t want any involvement with the police and calling may put him on the radar because I can’t think of any logical explanation that an outstanding citizen would not be suspicious enough to call the police when you see someone in the middle of the night digging a grave, putting something in the grave that is known to be used to transport murder victims, then pouring concrete over it. Let’s see let me think of things that it could be other than something illegal…. Gee I can’t even think of one, not even one. He should be charged with obstruction of justice because although not premeditated ,( assuming) that is certainly what it is.
They did report and there are rumors that they may have videoed it! Understand people that this is not a cold case, it’s an OPEN investigation and the police can’t disclose a lot of this info. Doesn’t mean there’s not more going on!!
chris lambert deserves so much love and praise for what he has done with this case. Not only did he bring the case back into the spotlight with the your own backyard podcast, but he also managed to bring forward so many new tips and witnesses to the slo sherrifs. Its no wonder that the flores family hates him.
He has basically solved this murder. I grew up in a house right next to the Flores house. The evidence that has come out to push this case forward would not have come out without him. The evidence that was found in the Huasna area had everything to do with him. Also some other information that has come to light has everything to do with another person who came forward bacause of it. These two people are presumed to be witnesses in this case.
I can’t believe a man saw some people dig a hole, pick up something rolled up in a rug, and then put concrete over it and didn’t call the cops. like WHAT. I mean how much more obvious can people get

@@mikehawk8629 see I thought the same thing about the girl at first, but then I realized... if that girl had walked Kristen to her dorm (or her friend's dorm, where she was supposed to go back to) and made sure Paul left Kristen alone... she then would have had to walk all the way back the opposite direction to her dorm, and Paul may have gone with her. I don't know if that makes sense, but basically if she walked Kristen back to safety, then left, it could have wound up being her, instead. I agree, she shouldn't have left her alone, she should have stuck around or tried to get campus police or something, but I think it's more on the guy who was with them, since he knew Paul was creepy as well and he left. the other girl was probably trying to protect herself, as well. Possibly because they were naive af thinking he’s a creep but he wouldn’t actually do something to her. 🤦♀️ regardless you don’t ever leave a person alone with someone like that and think she’ll be okay. He was he even trying to kiss her, and she still left her alone with him!! Like wtf.
I hope Margarita ends up finding some peace and not holding herself so accountable for what happened to Kristen. She was tired, she didn’t want to go out and that’s completely valid
I hope so too. She shouldn’t have left her alone but then again, back in 96 there probably wasn’t as much awareness spread about murder prevention or even just not walking alone at night.
I don't think she wanted to leave her friend alone, which is why she spent the whole night with her even though she didn't want to. After a point, you have to let people make their own choices, and stop hurting yourself for them. (denying your tired, aching, etc).

The fact that Susan called him a "henchman" says everything. She clearly views anyone looking into the case as an enemy because she knows the truth and is guilty. Otherwise you wouldn't get so defensive refer to a grieving family's detective (hired or not) as henchman.
@DES - unfortunately I don’t think she is. Paul is only facing 25 years as of now and Ruben is out on bail because he’s 80 and isn’t considered a flight risk. I didn’t see anything about Susan being in court on Monday but it’s definitely not over yet and she could still be charged.
Update: (haven’t seen this mentioned) It was testified in court there was evidence of human remains underneath the planter which was the size of a human grave. While the body has not been found evidence of body decomposition has been detected in the soil as a stain in the dirt. Cadaver dogs also alerted to the spot as containing odor. Human blood mixed in soil were also found in the dirt surrounding Rueben’s deck though no DNA was able to be recovered. They believe Kristen’s body was moved recently when the investigation started to pick up again. So while they don’t have her body they have a good chunk of biological evidence.
I was kind of wondering if she's the "credible witness" who saw them moving the body, and she made some kind of deal. Because it doesn't make sense that someone else wouldn't have come forward, so they had to be close, and the fact it happened when there started to be a lot more movement on the case, I wonder if she got spooked.
The entitlement of the Flores family to file a lawsuit and play the victim. Some people are so unfeeling and selfish and unfortunately they pass that on to their vile offspring

Yeah, police really need to start taking every report on a missing person seriously. So what if "she just went on a spontaneous trip"? That's great and everyone will be relieved once you've tracked her the fuck down. But maybe she DIDN'T and you're wasting precious time- The cost in the latter case, which is often for victims who could've still been found not to be or criminals to just walk free, is WAY too high for "saving a bit of work and some money/resources". >.
And I wasn't aware until recently that the practice in my country is to start searching for a missing person only if he/she is missing for at least 3 days 😥😠

Why didn’t the police just dig up that planter!!??? I can’t believe it honestly. She could be there, especially with the watch beeping. I am so disgusted at how poor Kristen’s case has been handled.
Can't even understand this myself there's no doubt in my mind that evidence will be found if not her body I hope to God they have some kind of surveillance parked up in the sky and pointed right at that property just waiting for someone to try and alter the property or the specific planter in an attempt to hide something!!!

The part regarding the watch alarm going off every morning just haunts me. Like makes my stomach hurt. That poor girl. I hope the Flores family is met switfly and hard with charges for her murder.
Mary sounds like an absolute gem of a human, if it weren’t for her this case probably would’ve never been solved, she really followed her gut instinct and did better work than the actual police!
It always drives me crazy how police seem to assume they know the victim better than his/her friends. They will get a call that says "my friend wouldn't just disappear without a trace" and the police will say "eh... it happens all the time! No worries xoxo best of luck!!" And then they run around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to scramble a case together. Ridiculous. Hoping Kristin gets the justice she deserves.
Yes! When you've listened to a lot of crime podcasts etc., you realize that it happens so often. Families trying to report someone missing really hear this a lot. I just can't understand it. @@tuczyn exactly! Like, we all know the 24-48hr waiting period is BS. I’m not sure why police would just assume any call is unwarranted. There’s always a reason the family & friends call in the first place!

How embarrassing that a PODCAST can literally put a whole case together and even have more witness at hand than a whole ass Police department.. but other than that good thing that sketchy family is finally being held accountable.
People need to remember that these cases we hear of are the minority of cases, the large majority of cases are solved and handled properly. Unsolved cases are wildly expensive & difficult to have the budget to solve, especially when many departments have low budgets. Of course there is sometimes one or two police officers that do not properly use their training, but if you’ve never been a police officer or worked in law enforcement, i would say it’s inappropriate to judge their processes.

I actually had this happen to me at a place I had just bought and it was going off every morning at 6.15 and it creeped me out and I called the police in the 3rd day and I tried to find it from day one, in the dark with a flashlight. Those cops thought I was crazy and I told them that if I had to dig up a dead body cuz they don't have time to, then I would sue the crap out of them and make sure the whole world knew of their incompetence. Then they said they would come out the next day and I said that they need to get there before 6am cuz they need to be there when it goes off. They never came out and I called day after day hour after hour until they finally showed up pissed at me for all the trouble. Ridiculous. They heard it go off and said, "so that's it??" Um, yeah, that is what I said the couple hundred times I called. They turned around and left. I decided to dig it myself and I finally found it but no body there. Nice watch though. I have literally dragged girls out of bars because they wanted to stay to find a party after last call when I was leaving. We came together to the bar, we leave together from the bar. You want to scream in my face you hate me, cool, we can never talk again if that's what you want. But you're getting in the taxi with me and going home. My friend once went out and was walking from one bar to meet friends at another and she got pulled into an alley by a man, and the scariest part is that people walked by and looked right at her fighting to get away, hearing her scream for help, and they just looked away and kept walking. No one is going anywhere alone if they're with me. Not one girl has ever called me the next day and been mad. At the time, they're drunk and think I'm ruining their fun, the next day they're grateful because they were too intoxicated to have been cautious and something bad definitely could've happened. I have always been terrified of this happening. It wouldn't have been my fault, it wasn't this girl's fault, but I'd for sure feel like it was for the rest of my life. We deserve a world where people feel safe alone no matter where they are, but that's not what we have, and it 100% can happen to you.
Paul Flores acted like he was trying to help her get home safe… people should be able to defend themselves, that’s one of the many reasons I support the right for college students to be taught to use and carry a firearm. A firearm is the great equalizer. Even the thought that someone might be carrying could prevent them as being seen as an easy target. I’m talking about being trained and required to prove that you are being responsible. An intoxicated person behind the wheel of a car is extremely dangerous, so I believe that if we’re going to allow college students to drive, we should allow them to protect themselves and others. *I know I’m not expressing a popular opinion. Thankfully we have the 1st amendment in the United States, and the 2nd to protect it! 🇺🇸

One important correction since this video was made, they now have eyewitnesses saying they are quite sure she was incredibly intoxicated (laying down on the lawn) after just 1-2 drinks. She was 6’1”. There is no way she was that intoxicated from just a couple drinks. She was drugged. It was premeditated rape, if not straight up premeditated murder.

I now understand why my boyfriend doesn’t want to have children. Reason he’s given, if something happens to them my life is over too, sounded really silly to me until this case. Wow. Just wow.
Right? Especially if you're renting it. I think that gives you the right to initiate something like that. At the very least you can start breaking the concrete so that something can be planted there, and claim that you weren't aware you were doing something wrong if you get caught. What have you got to lose? It seems to me the end justifies the means, in this case.
@Sophie B I’m no lawyer but I believe that only applies to any investigator. Basically just to prevent them breaking the law for their case. But citizens can break laws. They might be charged, but if they find a dead body in the meantime... 🤷🏻♀️

The fact that this woman has lived with body under her house is very telling. Their son is just like them, that's why they didn't want to help him with his "anger issues".
I wonder if Paul drugged her. With how often he was seen stalking her that night it would make sense why she was obliterated especially if it was abnormal for her to drink that much. Maybe he was monitoring her being drugged?
Thats what I think. I think he drugged her while they was at the party!!! That is why she was so "drunk"!! He attacked her she fought back and he killed her. And I believe she is in the concrete at that moms house. She is a B and just as much involved as her POS son and her POS husband!!! They are all a bunch of POS who deserve to rot for this.
Yep very much sounds like a drugging , especially swooping in like a white knight to carry her home...... If i could bet my house on who did it, i would be safe betting on him. Hope the family get closure soon.
Yeah especially since Kristin wasn't known to get INCREDIBLY drunk like that so I was surprised to hear how she had a sudden change of heart. But considering she kept rejecting him over and over,I can envision the idea of him drugging her.
If I was hearing that beeping noise every morning from my backyard, rental property or not I would be looking/digging to find the source! Every single morning at 4:20?! Come on now...🤦🏽♀️

And then they run around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to scramble a case together. Ridiculous. Hoping Kristin gets the justice she deserves.
Yes! When you've listened to a lot of crime podcasts etc., you realize that it happens so often. Families trying to report someone missing really hear this a lot. I just can't understand it. I get that the cops have to look critically at things, but what makes them so sure they can just disregard someone's concerns like that?

@@mariahandsons if they handled cases the right way initially they wouldn’t have this issues. A lot of unsolved cases are unsolved cause of fuck ass police work not cause they are “incapable” or anything like that

Podcasts don't have the same restrictions as law enforcement. Also you'd be surprised how much more a good interviewer can get someone to talk than a police station. But the moral of the story is that they just brush you off and it is ridiculous.

Yes to all of this ❤️

What happened to your friend? The one everyone ignored

Right? Especially if you're renting it. I think that gives you the right to initiate something like that. I wonder if Paul drugged her. With how often he was seen stalking her that night it would make sense why she was obliterated especially if it was abnormal for her to drink that much. Maybe he was monitoring her being drugged?
probably
Thats what I think. I think he drugged her while they was at the party!!! That is why she was so "drunk"!! He attacked her she fought back and he killed her. And I believe she is in the concrete at that moms house. She is a B and just as much involved as her POS son and her POS husband!!! They are all a bunch of POS who deserve to rot for this.
