  • In this video, Dr. Mark Pimentel discusses the connection between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
    Video Summary:
    - The connection between Bacterial Overgrowth and IBS is well established
    - Breath testing is far more likely to be abnormal with IBS patients
    - SIBO is an important part of IBS
    - Hydrogen, Methane and Hydrogen Sulfide are associated with SIBO
    - Hydrogen doesn’t correlate with symptoms
    - Methane correlates with severity of constipation
    - Hydrogen Sulfide correlates with severity of diarrhea
    - 60-70% of diarrheal IBS is bacterial overgrowth
    - Bacterial overgrowth can be caused by many other issues
ibs-smart® could help patients begin appropriate treatment quickly and prevent years of potentially unnecessary procedures like colonoscopies.
At www.ibssmart.com, patients can have an online prescriber evaluate their symptoms and order ibs-smart. Patients can also request kits to take to their current doctor. (www.ibssmart.c...)

I've told the doctors about my symptons and they ignore me. They only say: 'it's anxiety', but I have always been like that. This happens to me with certain foods, and reading about SIBO I could analyze my own diet and found out how onion caused me severe diarrhea... I think, I have that bacterial overgrowth in my gut

Highly likely! And so annoying that your doctor wrote it off as anxiety. Grrr. makes me mad! It's easy enough to test for SIBO, I do it all the time with clients.

I just came back from getting a colonoscopy and endoscopy today and I still feel like I'll never get put if severe rectal bleeding and vomiting blood off and on. My current new gasterenologist did I have no signs of ibd or a peptic ulcer but even he can't seem to explain what's causing me to have bloody stools. Ibs= it's a b.s. diagnosis. So I told him early this morning that I won't be coming back anymore. I could have saved myself alot of stress and money skipping these stupid and useless procedures.

I've had symptoms for decades, and have been to several gastrointerologists. They were all useless. I've just about concluded that lots of MDs are just quacks, although probably well-meaning; their training and the medical boards and the FDA don't let them deviate from standard protocols. I've recently started seeing a Functional Medicine practitioner. This doctor is an MD but not like the quacks I went to before. Functional Medicine practitioners don't just try to suppress symptoms like conventional MDs do, they look for root cause and treat that, not always with drugs & surgeries like the usual quack MDs. I've only been to this doctor twice, so I'm not well yet, but I'm hoping she can find and treat the root cause. I'm now also looking into the SIBO diet even though my SIBO test came back negative, because my symptoms seem suspiciously like SIBO. Unfortunately Functional Medicine practitioners are not covered by insurance in the USA so it's expensive.

I have had a full hysterectomy due to non stop bleeding but still bleed occasionally. I have had all the tests, some so unbelievably painful, but they have no answers. This was followed by rectal bleeding but have tested clear of cancer. I have constant diarrhoea. Then I had a very large oral bleed, so much blood. To cut a long story short I have been tested and diagnosed with what is known as HHT. Its an hereditary bleeding disorder and may be worth you looking into it. It’s short for Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia and takes many forms, often symptoms varying from minor to major in persons who are in the same family. It is as complicated as it’s name which is why it is commonly known by its abbreviated form.

@@johnterry8958 the TCM im seeing said the same that most MD'S are not trained to treat the root cause but just the symptoms he also said when he was in college that they only spent 2-3 weeks on the organs then moved on to some thing else

First time I’ve ever heard anything from a doctor that I can relate to IBS -GI doctors always say they don’t know the cause and it’s probably stress - only test for H-Plyori . This can content is encouraging

Most dr’s don’t understand the gut and don’t want to look deep into the real gut issues that exist. They blame it on stress like you said and also on too much acid production but could in fact be the complete opposite to what they claim it to be - low acid production. PPi’s could make things alot worse in the gut especially long term use that they’re prescribing these days. A gastroenterologist advises minimum use of PPi meds and as or when required. A GP Dr will try to prescribe and keep you on PPi meds long-term to shut you up but making your gut more worse in the long run. That’s my opinion.

I’m in Australia and not many docs know of sibo over here however I found a naturopath about two years ago that arranged a sibo breath test for me,came back negative but still my so called IBS persists. Crazy bloating, distended stomach and diarrhoea most days.
I can’t find anyone over here(Adelaide that knows about hydrogen sulfide sibo?!
Don’t suppose in your doctors circle that you know of anyone in Australia at all. I’m desperate

GIardia doesn't cause SIBO, but can cause IBS symptoms. My son recently tested positive for giardia on a stool test, and this was driving IBS symptoms.

Can you test negative on a breath test and still have sibo? I had a test 5 years ago. I have had gut problem, diarrhea for 23 years but had breath test 5 years ago, was told I didn't have it. You said that you can get it from adhesions, which I do have on my bowel. I cannot have more surgery because they said will just grow back. I don't know if all the fodmap and fasting that work.

I had a SIBO test 7 years ago. It was negative, but my symptoms continued. My doctor recently looked back at those results and told me the criteria have changed and by today’s standards, my test would be considered positive. She ordered a new breath test for me, and my numbers were way higher now than 7 years ago. I’m finally being treated for SIBO, both hydrogen and methane. Maybe you should consider testing again.

I saw that a study came out this week that indicated no it does not. There’s interesting evidence that it could be related to a prior food poisoning 🤷🏻.
Anyway, my dr switched me from PPI to Pepcid. Made no difference.
