In this doom metal guitar lesson I teach you the entire rhythm section from When The Screams Come by Pentagram. The song is broken down into its main riffs, each demonstrated and explained in full detail.
The song is played in the key of G Minor and it’s riffs utilize elements from the G Natural Minor Scale {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7}, the G Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7}, the G Minor Pentatonic Scale {R, b3, p4, p5, b7}, the G Phrygian Mode {R, b2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7}, and the G Dorian Mode {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, M6, b7} The solo uses the G Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7}.

a pentagram song that has always eluded me to this day is Starlady, so many different crazy riffs in there

The solo on that song is ridiculous. So simple, but perfectly laid out.
That one (the at least the recording from from first daze here) is actually done in E Standard. When they re-recorded it for Show ‘Em How (2004) they used the whole albums respective tuning standard of D.

Witchcraft would be cool. Also would love to see Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats (like Death's Door), it's one of those songs where I think I'm like 80% there but I'm pretty sure I'm missing some details.

One of my favourite songs ever. Excellent lesson as always! I'd love to see some Victor Griffon era Pentagram, Petrified in particular. I just cannot get my head around his crazy tuning haha.
Nathan Merry thanks man! Victor’s crazy tuning from that era is Bb-Ab-Db-F#-Bb-Eb. The standard R5 chord shape will produce an octave which sounds very distinct and heavy, especially for the era when it was recorded.

@@Supernaut32 Sure thing. Just tune your guitar down to Eb standard (one half step) and then drop that 6th string to match the pitch of the 2nd string. It's awesome.
Fun fact.....Petrified was written by Joe Hasselvander the drummer and he taught Griffin how to play it :)

I have an interesting suggestion. On the Bedemon Child Of Darkness album recorded in 1973 by a few members of Pentagram at the Pentagram practice warehouse, the songwriter/guitarist Randy Palmer (who wrote Star Lady on Last Daze Here), used an ElectroHarmonix solid-state amp called the Mike Matthews Freedom amp. It was a small, but very loud amp. The doom tone he got from it is ridiculous. I am dying to come across one that still functions. I've seen one on Reverb, but it doesnt have the appropriate power cord, and one is hard to find. I'd hate to buy it and not know what to do to find a way to power it. If you can get your hands on a Mike Matthews freedom amp and do some Bedemon demos like Child Of Darkness, Enslavers Of Humanity, Frozen Fear, ect, would be awesome. Most of those amps were battery powered.

Cool Jam ❗I find if I use 12 gauge 💥 strings the tension in D standard is about the same as 10s in E standard , which works good for speed picking 🎸

Checkout Bedemon if you havent already. It was a side project offshoot of Pentagram, recorded at the warehouse Pentagram practiced at in 1973. Pure Doom pioneering, right there. Child Of Darkness is just so killer.

HI! great lesson! The first Pentagram album what tuning is it?
Which album exactly? Relentless is partially in Eb standard and for some songs he takes the Eb on the 6th string and drops it to a Bb (same pitch as the 2nd string) so that the standard R5 chord shape produces an octave.

Time Traveler I’m fairly certain All Your Sins has the 6th string dropped to a Bb. Thinking I might teach that one.
I have been building and selling a clone of a no longer made pedal called the Pussy Melter by Steel Panther. It sounds so awesome. A friend of mine after some tweaking of the pedal can get some nice Pentagram and early 80's Punk Rock tones. It can doom also. But doom is more the individual than the pedal in my opinion.
