PJs mostly work in land while rescue swimmers mainly work in water. If there's a ship sinking or someone drowning. USCG Rescue Swimmers are the first ones there.
The PJs showed up due to location. USAF Pavehawks have inflight refueling capabilities so have an extended range compared to USCG Jayhawks which do not have inflight refueling. Both are ASTs and PJs (and don't forget the other aircrew members too) are amazing jobs full of brave, selfless individuals.
I have The Highest Respect for the Coast Guard and all you do for our country. My brother and sister - in - law , were both Coasties, having served regular duty in the late '70's and reserve duty into the mid '80's...I used to babysit my two nephews, when they did weekend drills, and two week duty every year, until they both retired. I was a NJROTC brat, and hoped to go into the Coast Guard after HS, but, my asthma had worsened, and I failed my physical. I would've loved to have served as well! So, thanks to all the Guardsmen and Gaurdswomen for your service, it's greatly appreciated!!!!
Technically it's really not that hard to pass each personal qualification standard list for ASM (AST now), just having to perform each one in front of the section chief at the school atTRACEN Elizabeth City.
I'm an EMT right now and will be working towards this for the rest of this year. I've always loved helping people and this is my go to. I'll probably be a firefighter after I finish my time or so. Edit: Also will be a Flight Medic so wish me luck haha.
Is there a zero acceptance rate into the Coast Guard if you've had a detached retina? Any medical waivers maybe? My entire life has been on the water and I was told it may effect my chances of getting in.
The best person to ask would be a recruiter. You can find your local recruiter or speak to one online using the Chat Now option available at www.gocoastgoard.com. Best of luck, Coast Guard Social Media Team
How do I even sign up for this? I really want to be a coast guard swimmer, I'm going to get experience as a life guard and I was in my high schools varsity swim team for a year, what do I need to do?
Dominic, glad to hear you are interested in serving. Each case in joining is unique and the best way to find out the case specific to you is by connecting with a recruiter. To learn more about the service and to contact your local recruiter head over to www.gocoastguard.com. You can also visit facebook.com/GoCoastGuard to learn more about the service. If the PJ's can't rescue somebody, coast guard can. I give the coast guard an insane amount of respect.

In the movie "The Perfect Storm" the PJ's showed up because the Coast Guard was incapable of doing the rescue due to the weather!

Also most coast gaurd stations only have one swimmer on duty whereas PJs have an entire squad.

It's like the movie "The Guardian" but not as glamorous and 20 times harder!

Heli Jet what are you talking about?? I watched 3 classes graduate with 0 people. You clearly haven’t seen what they do in person.
These guys only float because of the huge balls they got. For my uttermost respect, they're definitely up there with SOF operatives. I'm not kidding

Jake OZ Jake, how are you coming along in your training?
ASTs (Rescue Swimmers) are pretty much the Coast Guard’s flight medics, aside from Corpsmen, who can provide a higher level of care.
I am going to be a rescue swimmer when I am older ^^ That's my dream!

It seems a lot like the PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Rescue Diver Course, but more serious.
This is what I want to do in the future
Looks like a good job for me to be part of!

Sign me up. Seriously.
Do you need to be an American to become one? Can people outside USA apply? My daughter would like to be a rescue swimmer.
Does anyone know what the correct order of rescue is? Like talk, reach, throw.... Then what?
LPS Tarzy we were always taught: reach, throw, row, go :)
