USCG Helicopter Rescue Swimmer AST A School (131-19)

- Arguably the most widely recognized team of rescue-swimmer operators, the elite United States Coast Guard Aviation Survival Technician (AST)/Helicopter Rescue Swimmer team is called upon to respond in the most extreme rescue situations. High seas, medical evacuations, downed aviators, sinking vessels, and hurricanes are some of the deadly scenarios that Coast Guard rescue swimmers are trained to handle. The Coast Guard's team of ASTs is composed of about 350 active-duty members, and only 980 members have passed the training to become Helicopter Rescue Swimmers since the mid-1980s.
AST A School in Elizabeth City, North Carolina lasts for 24 weeks, and includes intense physical fitness, long hours of pool fitness and instruction, extreme water-confidence drills, and classroom instruction. The Coast Guard rescue swimmer training program is very challenging and is one of the toughest U.S. military training courses. Reportedly, only 75-100 Coast Guard personnel attend the school each year. The attrition rate in some years has been as high as 80%, although the 10-year average is just over 54%. Prospective U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers are physically conditioned to meet high physical fitness standards. About half of prospective candidates make it to AST "A" School. Upon graduation, candidates must attend seven weeks of training at the Coast Guard's Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school in Petaluma, California, where ASTs become EMT qualified. Rescue swimmers at Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, Alaska, must maintain the EMT-Intermediate level of proficiency due to the remoteness of their operational area and the number of medical evacuations performed by that unit each year. Once stationed at a Coast Guard Air Station, apprentice ASTs must complete 6 months of qualification on their respective airframe before moving on to finish their rescue swimmer syllabus and becoming journeymen.
The Coast Guard holds a one-week Advanced Helicopter Rescue School (AHRS, formerly known as Advanced Rescue Swimmer School) at Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Washington, which is host to Air Force pararescuemen (PJs), Navy rescue swimmers, and foreign rescue departments as well. There, students learn the challenges of vertical-surface rescue, cliff operations, sea-cave traversing, and extreme-high-seas rescue. AHRS is considered the premier helicopter-rescue training school of its kind by most military and civilian rescue operators.

I have an older cousin who broke multiple ribs during BUDs training, he was unable to complete and the Navy told him he would not recover in time to try again. He joined the helicopter rescue swimmers instead and I never heard him express regret. The way he handled himself when we wrestled in the pool one summer is one of the most remarkable memories I have. I am grateful for his service and for the rescue swimmers in this video.
Bravo bravo
whoever jumps out of a helicopter in the middle of bad weather straight to the water to save someone else's ass deserves mad respect. this guys are crazy
Anybody who works on the water knows that feeling of relief when the orange and white helicopter is in view. Thanks, boys.
can you suscribe to my channel pls¿ road to 100 subs :(

Hi
Albino Harambe exactly Fortnite you tubers love to self promote it’s annoying
I want to be a coast gaurd when i grow up be cause i like the air and water
I’ve never have heard about these guys, but they truly are the real deal, massive respect for them and their hardcore training!

movie was made in 2006 to honor them "The Guardian" with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher
Defidenty
Looks like they’re all lean too which is what you would need for swimming
Damn the comfort these guys have in the water is amazing
There's never really any comfort
it's not comfort it's calm and confident. when you get comfortable you've made a mistake.
the water is where they spend must time in work so its normal i think
@@carsonkouts ok high speed lol
@@thisguy-yv5so how is that high speed its what they teach you. I love the water, used to spend as much time in it as possible. Then during dunker and sere they made sure you understood the difference between comfort and confidence. They would randomly switch out our HEEDs air bottles with empty ones and if you got too comfortable you would freak the fuck out when your just filled air bottle is now empty and you are strapped into a chair upside down in pitch black water sinking into the pool
I am relieved and overjoyed that in this day and age the mustache is alive and thriving in the coast guard.
you cant have a beard so more people grow mustaches since thats all thats permitted

As a Navy Veteran, I have huge respect for USCG Helicopter Rescue Swimmers.
To all USCG, thank you for your dedication and service.
God, my heart rate doubled inside 15 seconds. I was a USCG Blue Dolphin at Yorktown, and my age group was my extended-family from the age of about 5, until we each either went off to college on swimming scholarships, or to be rescue swimmers, or maybe even moms and dads. But 6 mornings a week, for 14 years, before school, we were in That pool slapping tiles. The USCG puts great pride in its swimming talent, and I love seeing them get the recognition they deserve.
Whoever shot and edited this, kudos! You did an awesome job!
Wow John that is so interesting- were your parents in the service too ?
Like how the training includes the combat you’ll have with your victim
I heard the coast guard does a great job of challenging the candidates with real challenges they’ll face on the job
I went to see how they do without fins lol
just in case this comment isn't a joke: the reason they probably train for that is because when someone is in the process of drowning, they instinctively reach for anything floating and try to get on top of it/them - in this case the people trying to rescue them, which can result in both of them drowning which is why they need training to get someone off them.
So why do the rescue swimmers sneak up on them from behind?🤔 I want to know so they don’t have do it to me if I ever need to get rescued.
@@lokomono89 probably still pretty well as fins can only help so much
My dad was in the Coast Guard for 22 years. Months at a time, I wouldn't be able to see him. It felt like he'd be gone for months then come back for 1 week and leave again. That's what it felt like. He retired when we moved. So now when he's gone at work or on fishing trips it doesn't seem to bother me because he used to be gone for months at a time. Just glad I can spend time with him instead of him being gone for months now. 😔❤
My brother was a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. Unfortunately, he died on his very first mission out in Humboldt Bay California. He loved his job and the Coast Guard. We did not have a funeral just a lot of Memorials. James and I were real close, at least he died doing something that he was passionate about and not from overdose on drugs or a drunk driver or whatever. These guys are really hard core and take pride in their jobs. Thanks for the video Cayden Grooms. New subscriber here.
@SocraticMindThinker 101 Died on a rescue mission in northern California back in 1997.
@SocraticMindThinker 101 I wouldn't say that, they went out in a bad storm past midnight. Borderline catergory 1 hurricane big swells too. I don't think the Helo should have been sent out that night in my opinion?
I’m so sorry. Hero
My deepest condolences 🙏 he is a hero ! God bless you , your family & all the gold star families 🙏
I live in Humboldt and we have the deepest respect for the coast guard. Sending you my deepest condolences.
My dream is to join air force pararescue, but these guys have my upmost respect too!
Follow your dreams, be a Hero for your country.
Dude same but my parents say it’s too hard
@@alexshaw8952 i mean true it is hard but nothing is too hard obviously some people get through it. It just matters how much you want it
I have thought about both not sure which one I want to do. They both are amazing jobs.

When other swimmers say “hold my cup” and go and show off, these guys brings their cups with them. :)

I like that
This brings a tear to my eyes because I’m going to boot camp for the coast guard soon and here right after. I am so grateful to even have the opportunity and I hope I have what it takes to be one of these men.
How’s everything going ??
nice, your physical training is the most clever way I have ever seen in the military
As a good family friend (USCG 1968-1973) said...
"Because some days even the Seals need to call 911"
isnt that sorta what pararescue is suppose to say?
George Kirubel Yeah, but Combat Controllers are their “911”

I am a retired US Army "wolf / mountain lion." My small unit went nowhere near the ocean, but good luck finding or coming after us in the mountains. I am amazed at you "fish / sea mammals," because I ain't going anywhere near the water (ocean). LOL I love how diverse and and different we humans are. If everyone were a carpenter, we would starve (if that makes sense). Great video, and thanks for what you do.
International Oppa just as the wolf/mountain lion is useless in the sea so to is the shark in the mountains and forest. We all have different strengths and weaknesses.
Big respect for the determination and self-discipline to keep pushing, not only through the training/selection, but no less all the years of PT just to get to selection. Staying dusciplined with PT, diet, sleep and not going the path of least resistance is tough. Hats off.✔
I was in the Coast Guard 30 years ago. Wish they had rescue swimmers then. I probably would have tried my damndest to join this elite group. Much respect to rescue swimmers everywhere. Stay safe and Semper Paratus. Bravo Zulu.

Just plain BADASS !!!!
Thank you USCG !!!
They should put this on Day time tv !!! All the people that have no idea what our Military does !! 75% probably can’t do one task !!
Thank you for your hard work and keeping us safe!!!
J. R. im a 20 year veteran , its ok if the other 75% cant , we voluntarily take on these types of roles to afford those the opportunity to not have to ..it’s their right !
That's why USA is number one ( excellence in everything) 💪💪 love from algeria
It takes one special individual to do this job. Selfless service and personal courage are given for a occupation like this but it goes deeper than that. "Love for man" is as close as I can get. To throw yourself into a situation VOLUNTARILY; a situation where the odds are stacked against you. A situation where you find yourself submerged thrashed about by mother nature in the dark abyss that is the ocean to rescue people who are encountering one of the most terrifying times of their life that will stick with them forever and YOU choose to be their saving grace. Love for man is the only thing I can think of that drives these incredibly special individuals.
God Bless you.
Never knew about any of this. Always makes me proud to be an American when I see men and women like this making these sacrifices for our country.
Special Forces 22 years and attended the Scuba Course, Key West Florida, 1977. Watching them do flutter kicks pool side with mask and fins brings back lots of memories. I’m 63 now and just got a hip replaced and everyday something hurts, but If Father Time gave me a do over, I wouldn’t change a thing.
I don't care who you are, if you work in a job and your motto is "So Others May Live" you're an ultimate badass.
It’s now 2024 and I’ve had this video in my like videos on UA-cam since about 2 weeks after it was posted. Seeing this video and how cool these guys are. I knew from the first time I watched this video that’s who I wanted to become. I would love to go into the Cost Guard, Air Force, Army, etc… Sadly medication is the one barrier keeping me from starting my journey.
Great video these guys are nothing less than heroes putting it on the line every day. The hard work and dedication it takes to become apart of the eleit life savers is extraordinary and they have my upmost respect. From a US Marine to all those who take on this calling thank you Semper Fi Semper Paratus
I've lived on the water for years and years, and my most fulfilling memories are pulling people out of the ocean, who's lives are on the line.. and numerous times I've heard; where'd you come from ?!? And what's your name ?!? And then a heart felt hand shake !! #watermenforLife
Thats is so wholesome !
I really appreciate this USCG going though this training to help others so they don’t die. Thank you USCG.
These guys are absolute badasses and as a big time beach goer I’m always glad to know that they’re coming if you are in need of help.
This is seriously the coolest Coast Guard video I’ve ever seen! Excellent production! Thank you to these Coast Guardsmen for their hard work and dedication! Love seeing them enjoy what they do too! (From a proud Coastie Mom)

Two combat tours in Vietnam with Army Special Forces. I know badass when I see it. These folks are absolutely badass!
1:39 >That thing is real. When someone is drowning, they will try to grab your neck, hair, shoulder...anything.
I'm a lifeguard (North West of Africa, Atlantic Ocean), we have to hit people behind their necks with our elbows (in the water), once they pass out in the ocean, we start saving them without risking our lives. It's ugly but it works every time.
I am so proud to see my Coast Guard brothers going hard.

Respect to A school rescue swimmers!
The Guardian is one of my fav movies! Def check it out if you haven’t!
It can be a rough job sometimes. They don't tell you all the stuff you'll have to most likely put up with eventually. For example like rescuing some one and getting them in the helo than the engine overheats so they have to rush in and meanwhile you're stuck out in freezing cold water for hours near dead with hypothermia until another one comes to save your ass. I've seen that happen at least twice when I was in Alaska. And those dry suits definitely dont stay completely dry either once you're in the water.
By bsf has been training (on her own terms no trainer she did this on her own) since she was 11 and I'm really proud of her she still has a long way to go but she is doing amazing!
