Simply because the USCG is not necessarily combat oriented they're often forgotten as a branch of our military but these guys have pulled my fat out of the fire on 2 separate occasions and they deserve so much more recognition than they get...as far as respect goes I hold them in the the absolute highest regard!! Things for everything y'all do for us!!
Its funny you say that because Navy and Coast Guard rescue swimmers up until recently went through the exact same rescue swimmer school after aircrew can school and even roomed together in the same room in the BEQ. One of my instructors was Coast Guard. However i would be wrong in saying that in the fleet it is also the same. Navy swimmers for the most part are crewman and the rescue swimmer part is secondary. Has it turns out there isnt that many planes going down in the ocean for us to get the call that often but when it does you need someone that knows how. Coast Guard primary mission is just that to pull people out that need help. Drunk surfer, folks on vacation, olympic swimmer with a cramp or a 747 that crashed in the ocean. No matter time or weather they will come for you but if all this occured in the past its a decent chance that coast guard rescue swimmer partner pushing that concrete block across the bottom of the pool was in the Navy. Just saying
Adrian Woodard, a 747 doesn’t just crash into the ocean. I’m an aviation enthusiast and I know that it does happen. But when it happens it’s not a controlled landing, even if it is it will most of the time end up in fiery catastrophe scene. No pilot who has enough control of the plane to ditch the plane would ditch it on water unless they’re running out of fuel or something with no other options. TL;DR No plane would land there with good control, most likely ending in an explosion like ‘landing’.
My brother was a helicopter rescue swimmer in the coast guard for 15+ years. So very proud of him ❤️. For years it was difficult hearing the stories but now with him recently promoted to chief and no longer out in the helo’s I can watch footage. These men are true heroes.
My hat is off to the brave men and women who risk their lives every time they fly out to save others. Anyone who does this for a living has my respect forever. God bless you all.
No we got paid more than that. You got automatic e4 after graduating RSS. Plus you got flight given you got your hours every month. Depending on the situation you could also get hazard duty pay.
Billy Bob well I took it as he did rescue swimming in the past and now he's alive and onto something else. I think you read it wrong but I'm no English pro 😊
God, it gives me chills to hear someone say that. As a coastie, when someone asks what you do and you can tell them “I’m a rescue swimmer”....it’s like saying “I’m John, I’ve been in the coast guard for 10 years...and I’m mutherf--ing Superman.”
This is so cool! I want to become a coast guard rescue swimmer when I’m older, I love to swim and I’m in love with helping people. This is generally just my dream job, These people do so Much just to save others!
I’m here after reading about this rescue in Rachel Slade’s Into the Raging Sea. You guys do something that’s so amazing and unbelievable. You are real heroes of the world.
Imagine you’ve lost hope and despair is all around you , you know a hero when you see them in action , a courageous silhouette amongst a swirling wave a grey spray , then hope becomes real again .
I served as a US Navy Rescue Swimmer. Even did a collaborative mission with the Coast Guard off San Diego to medevac a merchant mariner with appendicitis.
I'm so scared of water, i get watery eyed thinking about being in hurricane weather. I'd be crying like a little baby. You guys are braver than i am in that regard.
Lived and commercial fished in Kodiak since 1974 and I can tell you that we lost so many young men and women but when the Coast Guard made it---they have saved hundreds of lives...including the 6 crew of the Odyssey, October 1984...my husband and 5 others who thought they were "dead" and began to load the pots with buoys so that their bodies would be found..they thought no one had heard them, no one ansered the may day...and then the C-130 flew "low and slow" the powerful plane that can get close to the ocean, and dropped flares -- and then the helicopter and rescue swimmer showed up-saved 6 men in that one.....Whenever I hear them going over, I run outside to look at the J-Hawk or the C-130...Heros they are...all of them
These people are my greatest heroes! I am terrified of water AND heights so to even watch this is scary. They jump right in there, and their only agenda is to save people. No politics or ideology. Just doing their utmost to get people to safety. AMAZING PROFESSIONALS! ABSOLUTELY HEROES!
Their crews respectfully are nicknamed REAPERS ,,why ? Cause they collect up lost souls ,like fire crews they the ones who bravely face danger everyday
@Justin credible I think you'll find its probably to do with SOS save our souls ,so it collecting lost souls as reapers collect souls ,dunno why you'd associated you'd think otherwise ,murbid comments shows no pride in people who selflessly go out into the worst storms known to save and preserve life of another
bad to the bone, those coasties...great history..great men and women...dont kid your self, combat ready as well (Vietnam) ...they lost one on the east coast...the storm of the century...he left behind 4 kids and a wife...we will never forget those who give their all...we salute the Coast Guard men and women.
What about AW3 Dorner USN HS-11. He swam through sharks to save 4 people who had been adrift for a couple weeks after a hurricane capsized their sailboat. Btw, awesome job to this CG crew.
Thumbs-Up #866 I am, Saturday 14 Apr 2018. That is what I like, professionalism and communication. It is astounding to me that there are 16 dislikes. I would expect zero!
Kaepernick does not pretend to be a hero. You are comparing apples and oranges. Kaepernick is simply making a point that badly needs to be made, about the persistence of racial prejudice in the US as a whole and racial bias by law enforcement in the US. Millions of Americans - not just blacks - support what he is doing. It Get over yourself.
We’ve got idiots and adrenaline junkies who’d go out to sea on extreme conditions, putting the lives of these brave men when they get into an accident.
In my opinion, there are very few things scarier than the pitch black ocean These men of the Coast Guard take it on fearlessly to save those in need An absolutely honorable position of our military
What was happening was the Pilot was bumping down the hoist cable via a switch he has on his flt controls up front in the cockpit. The helo hoist system could have experienced a malfunction of some sort (which was mentioned the cable was fraying if that was the first helo) or the Flt Mechanic running the hoist was not able to lower the hoist cable once the basket was inside the helo. He should of had a hand held, remote pendant to operate the hoist unless he was in a situation where he could not use it.
Yeah but you ain’t got nothing on that oil rig guy. He swam out to it with no wetsuit. It was raging in flames and listing over. He”d climbed bare hand up the steel to the first deck. Then after searching the gangways and pushing forth through heavy flames, he’d ripped open a steel door. All bare handed. Saved the oil rig workers. Then as helicopter took off a second floor 10,000 Tonnes pontoon was collapsing so he’d stayed back to brace his body against It’s supports. He’d held it there. Chopper flew off to safety. Clarke Kent his name was.
Yes, whatever they get in pay could not be enough for what they do. Elected politicians are grossly overpaid. Our military and Coast Guard are grossly underpaid. The problem is that Congress votes for their own pay raises. This must change. It's gone on way too long. These heroes deserve the highest monetary rewards. What truly GREAT men they are.
Im curious to know why he didnt stay on scene with the last 3 stranded victims? It is possible command did not allow it though. I would have wanted to stay.

Nobody cares about the coast guard until they need em
Not true, us grunts know. Coasties > Squids all day, everyday.

"Because even the Navy needs heroes"

Swimming in 60 mph winds and 12 foot swells to rescue 12 men and didn't lose a single one. That's a life well-lived.
These guys should be paid a lot more than they get. Cut politicians wages by half and give it these heroes.
Standard military pay......
No we got paid more than that. You got automatic e4 after graduating RSS. Plus you got flight given you got your hours every month. Depending on the situation you could also get hazard duty pay.
Thanks
Id do it again for free if they feed me and bought my dr pepper and clothes.
heli tack Originally politicians were never supposed to be paid. Take all their pay and raise he all military pay.
I don't know how their helicopter can take off due to the massive weight of their balls. Props to the crew and to the helicopter.
Jorge Mendez it’s a superpuma can fly in any conditions
Get a new joke
That’s an original one😉
Julio Blind, I wouldn’t consider a crew with balls of steel being ‘a condition’.
lol. true that!
My son was a Navy rescue swimmer. I am very proud of him.
Billy Bob well I took it as he did rescue swimming in the past and now he's alive and onto something else. I think you read it wrong but I'm no English pro 😊
TilemanSD no one asked about your son, did you just come to this video to say that ?
Noah H no asked you to mock this guy but here you are
the guy with gills yes, there is no need to thank me. For I am just a normal citizen who wants people to know how dumb they sound
Army vet here. Thanks to your son for his service.

Amazing men. The definition of " a man's man"
So others may live.
So that others may live
@@scotrule6128 "So others may live" is the USCG rescue swimmer motto.
"That others may live" is the motto of the USAF Pararescue airmen or "PJs".
Oh calm down
So that others may live. Doc
With my most respect to this swimmer and to all CG.
the food chain in the ocean: shrimps
True hero's one and all, thank you for your tireless efforts in saving those in distress.
All my respect to this brave men! 🙏
Oh My God. What a team effort. Salute to all of you! I have goosebumps seeing it as a real scenario.

How awesome it is that we have an organization dedicated to serving the American public on the water- maximum respect and appreciation!!
Absolutely amazing, keep going this way heroes, thank for your service.

These guys are total badasses and heroes.
That feeling when you're one of the last 3 and you see the helicopter flying away.....
The RS most likely stayed on scene with them.
Unsung heros........everyone one of the team....but especially the crew who helo's out to save people.
The very best of humanity, no exceptions
The anxiety of having to leave three people out there twice had to be rough. Well done y’all are definitely under appreciated in my opinion.
True to life...Semper P, brother! And...to this day they will say, "We were just doing our jobs." God speed!
Freakin right brothers!
Goosebumps.
Tim Rohrbach same all over this is very cool to watch
God Bless You
I will always respect the women and men whose jobs are to risk their lives for us. Salute.
This man needs the medal of honor or something.
The Medal of Honor is a combat medal. They would have been eligible for the Gold or Silver Lifesaving Medal or the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Now that truly is a hero.
Thank you for your service...
God blesse these men!
Rispetto assoluto per questi uomini coraggiosi🇮🇹💪🖐️🖐️🖐️🖐️

@AvalancheCleo unfortunately hurt my knee on an off-base run. Wait time for school was unknown at the time so I switched rates

Honestly I am shocked that the helicopter could handle his giant balls
Could've been citizen of the year! But we ended up with that joke Kaepernick. This is what a real hero looks like.
Sadly they'ed would just accuse him of white privilege and racism and ask why wasn't it a black man that rescued the survivors.
Bro the job of a rescue swimmer is to jump into the water. Do we say now every USCG swimmer gets a courage award?

What are the bumps
looks like he was telling him to press down on the carrier for some reason but idk
I guess to keep the line tight to help the winch?
Young lad here has never had a bump or a line lmao
I think the basket was stuck so he made the helicopter go down so the basket would jolt up and in
