Oh hell yeah this is an instant classic. The whole mystery setup on who Jason is, is done so well imo. Like we get the idea he was an agent, we understand that it was a mission gone wrong but what was the mission, who gave the order, and why? Finding those out is the real juice of the story. And the fight scenes are insane imo since that even though he has amnesia, Jason’s muscle memory is clearly at peak performance, and he just kinda runs with it even though he has no idea why he knows how he’s doing it.
would not work. the bond franchise works due to a lot of tropes inserted into the character. 'my name is bond. james bond', the martini, the gadgets, the womanizing, the secret service, england, the parties, the gambling, and so on. any memorable lines or tropes from jason bourne? none, whatsoever.

Miles better than the new Bourne movie at least. It's my favorite because I've always felt like Renner is better at action movies and I've always liked his fast hand to hand combat you see in Legacy and in MI movies. Never really bought Matt Damon in the role.
I highly recommend watching "Bridge of Spies" as a one off espionage movie based on a real story with Tom Hanks in one of his most underrated roles. Think you will both enjoy it.

Unquestionably one of the best spy franchises. James Bond (007) and Ethan Hunt (IMF) were cool, but Jason Bourne was more my speed. Because he was so flawed, reluctant, relatable and stoic. The novel series by Robert Ludlum debuted in the year I was born (1980). I saw the very-first screen adaptation on television with Richard Chamberlain & Jaclyn Smith when I was 8 (1988). Definite Inspiration on The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (1998). Matt Damon getting his own franchise, 5 years after winning an Academy Award was unprecedented. So great from start to finish and more of an tradition approach to the genre. I have the special edition from 2004 with alternate beginning and ending that makes the story more complex. There was a video-game in 2008 called The Bourne Conspiracy on PS3/Xbox 360. It was a retelling of the first movie and kinda fun. The next 2 films (2004, 2007) are incredible. The 3rd film (2012) with Jeremy Renner is not liked very much. But was a decent enough sequel to me. The 4th film (2016) with Damon's return as Bourne, regardless of the years gone by since we've seen him is phenomenal. Extreme Ways (The Bourne Theme) by Moby in it's many versions throughout the films are so good.
Holden, "who am i" from jackie chan is a must watch. Understand where you got the memory loss vibes from. Cant just randomly call out a spectacular Chan film without following it up..
By the way... it's never been a big industry secret that we have this flick* and its follow up to thank for getting the James Bond producers to just stop and close up shop and rethink their brand. This movie showed their caviar and tuxedo character had to be updated for a more 'modern' world/audience. Years later we would get Casino Royale and of course a lot of comparisons to the Bourne franchise. *Vin Diesel's Triple-X that also came out in 2002 was also the 'final nail in the coffin'; the very opening shot showed a man/spy wearing a tuxedo trying to get away from some baddies. He tries to allude them by hiding in a Rammstein concert. He can be made out a mile away(!). The world had gone and changed all around him. It was funny and sad to watch. You should look up the beginning scene.
I am so glad Jen hasn't seen these. I love these movies. They are among my fav. For me the rest are just as good as the first. Even the one with Renner.
There was already a movie called The Bourne Identity in 1988 based on the same novel with Richard Chamberlain as Jason Bourne. The novel also inspired a franco-belgian comic book series called XIII. The comic books also have a really good video game adaptation and a not so good movie and tv series adaptation. You see the Bourne/XIII family tree is really wide spread ;)
The Bourne series (trilogy, in particular) is absolutely peak Y2K vibes action/thriller. I really resonate with the music: "Extreme Ways" and "Ready, Steady, Go!" were some outstanding track selections
I like Jen's reaction to it and hope she enjoys the next 2 movies as much. It is hard for me to pick which is better between Jason Bourne and John Wick movies.
I'm glad you both are doing this franchise. These movies are very well written and directed. They should get more respect than they do but I am so happy you are checking them out. Also, you have to watch The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner. It's a part of that world but it doesn't get a good review but I'll love to get your opinion on it.
The Bourne Identity released while I worked at a movie theater as an 18 year old. Any movie released between the summer of 2001 and the summer of 2002 (LotR: Fellowship, Harry Potter 1, Bourne Identity, Star Wars Episode II, Black Hawk Down, Jurassic Park III, Spider-Man, etc.) holds a special place in my heart and when I browse streaming sites like Netflix, I can pick out any movie that came out when I worked there with like 99% accuracy.
Mid '80s, I read Robert Ludlum's book The Bourne Identity, when I was about 14 or 15 and never forgot it, so it was a great surprise when the Bourne films started to come out. Highly recommend fans of the film read the book too. Well worth it.
Great Reaction. You should also watch Spy Game with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. It is an amazing film. It is arguably the most realistic and greatest spy movie of all times.
First time watching your reaction and clicked when I saw Bourne Identity, such a geek fan. I read all of the books and loved them. The films do a pretty good job of entertaining and leaving one thinking quietly "can the agencies REALLY be like this, is this a revelation of MK Ultra?". Enjoy the Bourne journey.
By the way, when you get to the Paul Greengrass directed sequels don't fall for the generic hate for "shaky cam" that permeates UA-cam. All Paul Greengrass movies are shot with the documentary style "shaky cam" style & he does it excellently. Every action is captured in a frenetic style but Greengrass doesn't do the generic shaky cam movement. You can clearly followe every move of the actors during action scenes. But of course, Hollywood simply decided to ape that shaky cam style without adopting Greengrass's unique technique. Years ago Chris Stuckman did a fantastic video on how shaky cam ruined action movies but he also pointed out that the Bourne movies are the exceptions to that.
So glad you’re watching the Bourne films, definitely need to watch Legacy as well. Also strongly agree with Holden regarding Who Am I, has maybe the best choreographed fights scenes of all time. 👍👍
Love this series and really like how fairly grounded it is, it's always been one of my favorites since I was younger. I'm also pretty sure the Daniel Craig James Bond films being more grounded and serious than past iterations of Bond was in correlation to this series coming out
Really love these movies, a bit too much shaky cam, but damn great! Would like to see you watch the others! Also another sort of spymovie is "xXx" aka. "Triple X" with Vin Diesel, back when he did good movies. And I will still ask for you two to watch "Megan Leavey" because it is 1000% perfect for Jen! I admit, I never saw the red bag at the end, great catch!
I don't know if you guys plan on it but I highly recommend the latest hunger games (the ballad of songbirds and snakes) it is my favorite and would love to see yalls reaction ❤
Can't wait for Supremacy & Ultimatum. Unlike everyone else, I actually enjoyed the 5th installment (Jason Bourne) 4th if you dont count Legacy. Imo Legacy is a great stand alone, but doesn't fit into the marathon until the 5th movies tie in. Great watching these along with you 2 👍
Great choice Jen, the Bourne trilogy is a phenomenal trilogy. You will like or slash love the other two. Side note…. These movies really don’t get the respect they deserve. They really did start the whole “realistic gritty” action fighting style that was later in the bond and taken movies. Just saying….peace and love
The pistol you’re holding in the thumbnail…. One of my first purchases in my 2A journey. Beretta APX… mine was a centurion. If it’s yours or the hubby’s… great choice! 😁
So, technically speaking, movies like the Jason Borne trilogy are not actually spy movies. More like action-operator kind of movies. If you really want to watch a true, good spy movie, I suggest "The spy who came in from the cold", based on John Le Carré's novel. Not material for a reaction probably (it's a 1965 movie and I'm not sure how many younger people have watched it) but it's definitely worth the time for people interested in cinema. It's a true spy movie to the extent that it shows the spy game as a completely immoral activity where there are no good or bad guys, only a network of spy agencies with their own objectives and the determination to pursue them mercilessly to the point of treating even their own people as disposable assets. A great insight into the dark world of espionage.
My dad was a huge fan of both the Robert Ludlum novels and these movies, even though they’re wildly different. Honestly, I’m a fan of both as well. And he preferred these movies to the James Bond films because Bourne wasn’t some slick bloke in a tux. These seemed more grounded to him. He passed away between the release of Ultimatum and Legacy, so he missed the last two films in the series, alas. Anyway, happy belated Veterans’ Day to the Mrs. Thank you for your service.
solid series! The shakey cam gets a liiiittle bit more noticable from what i remember..at least, the 3rd one i believe? Still good and definitely worth checking out, but i do legitimately think this was one of the major reasons SO many action movies following this one overutilized the shakey cam lol
Great to see you finally get to this series. I actually prefer the 2nd one slightly better. I’m thinking you’ll both enjoy the 2nd one more. Overall, all of them are good in their own way.
I always loved the 90s europe vibe, its one of those movies that doesnt take place at the usual american places and takes the hole thing to a really underused setting. Part of that is that as a european its always cool to see a bigger production like that in familiar places. The hole thing is also more grounded and isnt over the top like other spy action movies. Its more believable and it feels very real, at least for me
Did you spot Matt Damon running behind the little van when he "disappears" after disembarking from the fishing boat? You can just see a frame or two of him that they left in. 🙂
After watching the two of you giving side glass after some comments I think you should consider watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), True Lies (1994), Salt (2010), and Atomic Blonde (2017).
"You could just kill her and keep the money..." Yep, Holden definitely played GTA.

These movies are my fav.. they give me a feeling that I can't explain and I can watch this movie anytime I wana feel good 😊
Great to see you finally get to this series. I actually prefer the 2nd one slightly better. I’m thinking you’ll both enjoy the 2nd one more. Overall, all of them are good in their own way.
One of my fav trilogies. I don't think they needed the other films but it makes money so I get it
Dude, "Who Am I" has to be in my top 3 favorite Jackie Chan movies
Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner is also a must watch, there should be more of those too!
Its more believable and it feels very real, at least for me
These films get better and I love “shaky cam” filming.
Huge fan of the franchise. Can't wait for your reactions to Supremacy and Ultimatum.
Spy Game (2001), the days of the condor (1975) great spy movies with action but not based directly on real events.
*crazy drum solo* "The Hardmans *crazy drum solo* react.
Did you spot Matt Damon running behind the little van when he "disappears" after disembarking from the fishing boat? You can just see a frame or two of him that they left in. 🙂
Great movie, and the First 3 are the bomb
You two should check out RUN LOLA RUN! I think Jen would get a kick out of it!
Bro I loved bourne and Clive Owen as the villain! You guys should 100% check out children of men.
After watching the two of you giving side glass after some comments I think you should consider watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), True Lies (1994), Salt (2010), and Atomic Blonde (2017).
I am happy you guys watched it this is one of my movies
If you guys haven't seen it, I'd recommend Long Kiss Goodnight, a bit on the older side nowadays but still a pretty damn fun spy movie.
