  • We made a DIY journal from up-cycled faux leather. We used old boots my wife was going to get rid of to make the outside binding of the notebook.
    The Process:
We started by removing the faux leather from the old boots by cutting the stitches away with a precision hobby knife. Once the material was removed, we moved on to prepping the parchment paper. To give the journal a rustic look, we measured about a half an inch around each edge and tore the sheets. Once all the edges had the torn look, we split the sheets in half to get a smaller final page size. After folding all the sheets into booklets, we made a template and used an awl to poke the pages where we wanted the binding string to go. We then cut the faux leather to size making sure to allow room for overlap as well as a little extra to create the finished look. We took the additional step of finishing the edges by folding them over and using rubber cement to glue it in place. We then made waxed thread by taking some brown/tan cross-stitch tread and running over beeswax several times. The waxed string is a lot easier to work with. We then used the string and a needle to stitch all the pages into the leather cover. We finished the look by taking some of the buckles that were on the boots and stitching them to the journal.
I followed the detailed instruction found here:

Did you need to wash the leather before working with it? I know you didn't use the bottom of the shoes but I wonder if there was any smell or dirt in the calf lining.
