The fact that this is just what some people did for a living way back when, that this was all they did, is so crazy and cool to me.
Same here. I think if I’d been living back a few hundred years ago I totally would have done this for a living 🥰
I will agree wholeheartedly
@@hamburgerwizard5853 really? I thought scribes just wrote stuff down, I thought book binding was it’s own separate profession
@@econley1088 same
I'd probably farm. Like 90 percent of everyone else at the time.
14:48 Oh! I see! Only fire-aligned mages can see what's written inside! Very clever!
What?
i was thinking one may have to light it on fire to see the writing. I like your theory better xD
Invisible ink that only appears when heated.
Yeah personally I’m a water aligned mage with a touch of air from my father

Bob Ross' the eff out of it.
This is no disrespect.
I love how you do all this work in your home on and couch, table, and using a chair. An average person doesn't have a shop and your making some awesome stuff out of your house.
Cheers!!
well mister @@SeaShrimp can you make a book like that ?? or even remotly close ? well whose got a sad life now ? .... have a nice day :)
So angry lol.
Come back in 5 years and tell us what you create that helps the humanity as you so elegantly put it.
@@SeaShrimp Dude, why so much anger over an art project? She built something that shes proud of and enjoys. That doesn't sound like a "waste of resources" to me.
@@SeaShrimp Actually, Mr Shrimp, what IS sad is that you have to be an anonymous keyboard troll who obviously find joy in being a total tosser!. She is a true craftswoman, who takes great pride in her work and sharing it. If you find it so 'sad', why are you even here? Your 'studying' to ''progress humanity forward' doesn't quite fit your rhetoric.....just the opposite in fact. Your character is on show to all on this thread........and it isn't anything to be proud of.
@@SeaShrimp It's called having a passion. People choose where they want to go in life, not you.
As for a job, UA-cam is a job dude. Try waking up to that fact.
In terms of 'no skills involved', I don't think you could be any more blind to how much precise work goes into this, despite being shown in the video.
Sure, this method of making books is old fashioned and no longer practiced to be printed in, but is certainly something that goes back centuries in crafting. Let people enjoy their lives. What they do with that shouldn't concern you.
If any engineer has your attitude, I surely hope they're not trying to 'help' society if they don't even understand it.
Seeing as the leather carving went quite well, you could try a Norse inspired book cover for an unrelated bookbinding, using both runic inscriptions and the various carving styles of Norse art. Given the Viking raids, conquests and trade relations brought them far and wide, you can also easily incorporate elements of Celtic, Islamic and Christian art in there.
I've thought about that for a long time, and I'm definitely going to do one in the future! And also, thanks for your compliments!
- Martina
Yay runes!
Yes!!!
Your cats wanting to be involved no matter how much in the way that makes them, always makes me smile! Love your work! :D Look forward to seeing all the tomes!
yes ... her next book will be on cats ..... as they get glued to one.
is it no matter how much they get in the way, or because they get in the way? 🤔🤔
I love that in the timelapse shots, you see her stop to give the cats scratches.
Imagine calling her while she's staining the paper
"Hey Martina! Whatcha doin?"
"Nothing, just putting some paper into some coffee."
"Wut"
"Yeah, this next batch is almost ready to head into the oven"
The Tome of fire is my favorite book that you made so far.

Do you sell your books if you do were do you sell them
Once had an interview at a book binding facility. The hiring manager refused to hire me. Wanted to learn I asked why?
Needless to say they underestimated a gal...unfortunately.
It is a great artform. Folks who are vegan don't seem to grasp we want cruelty free treatment of animals yet, we all die the leather can be ethical it's a problem letting it go to waste to rot. They clearly have never smelled dead farm animals rotting in fields- I certainly have piles of wasted hides that can be useful in the right hands.
My perspective on all this. Treat the critters with respect while alive and their spirit after as well you'll find a beautiful story on the outside of the book and inside as well. Wouldn't mind seeing you do a dream catcher cover? Overall this was enjoyable- obviously over 2 yrs old video still, your cat is adorable. Nice job.
Why didn't you use red leather for your fire Tome?
My voice is a bit unstable in this video because I caught a cold while making this book - sorry about that. As always you can find a list of and links to all the tools and materials I've used in the video in the description.
Super stoked about making the rest of these books! Which one are you looking forward to? Air, earth or water?
- Martina
Nerdforge so you get a cold while making the fire tome, coincidence?
Water will be great :D
Sir Sundays I think if the order went air, earth then water, it would be really cool. As fire and water are opposites it would be cool if they were opposites.
DeadeyeXL You mean if they bookended the series with the two opposite elements? That *would* be awesome!
Dark Jedi Princess why did you bold “would”?
Nhhhhg, it turned out so beautiful! 😍 Your skills are improving astronomically on each book you make. As a major fan of high fantasy (and The Circle of Magic series) I can't wait to see all the other element books you make for the series!
I love The Circle of Magic!!!
I LOVE THAT SERIES LOL!
Your skills are phantastic. Not only the book is extremely well made, also the video is great. I hereby recommend you as official supplier for Game of Thrones.
PS: I love your cats.
I just wanted to say thanks for being part of what has inspired me to take up book binding/book making. I've learned quite a bit from the videos you've made, and I have been able to make quite a few gifts for my family for Christmas this year.
Also, I hope you're enjoying the Wheel of Time series. I've just started book 7 and it gets better and better.
I love your grimoires! I can't wait to see the other three in this series.
The camera work in this video is amazing, Martina! It really makes the video higher quality. Brilliant job with the book as well, I can't wait to see your interpretation of the other elements in the other books.
I absolutely love your book making stuff, its because of this channel i started doing it myself and its great with christmas coming up im making a couple smaller books as gifts for people. I had never done anything like this before however over the 3 book binding videos i have learnt alot and have put it into practice. So please keep making these books and i cant wait to see the other element books.
This looks just sublime. That detail work on the cover takes my breath away.
Also a tip: I would recommend a liquid pH test, like the ones for aquariums. Strips are often just really inaccurate and if you want the paper to last then you want to test as accurately as possible
Now I KNOW you're a witch! You grew extra hands at 13:13!
SUPER fabulous work, you have awesome skills. How long did the entire project take, start to finish?
It is her familiar (no, not the cat), whose name shall not be spoken.
why do you think she is planing on makeing more spell books?
SUBSRIBE TO THE WITCH! wait-
Witch confirmed. She uses magic to make these books. How else can you make amazing books?
WOW. I want one! Love four elements-themed stuff, so I can’t wait for the other three!
you are so incredibly talented! you have inspired me so much and I can't stop talking about book making to my boyfriend and I made him watch all your book binding videos lol. I cant wait to see the other three!
For some reason, I found it refreshing to watch you working comfortably on your couch (with the help of the cats). When I was a child, I did most of my making in our family/living room; with other family watching and helping as needed. This video brought me back to those days, and it was comforting to watch. I would happily bring my hobbies into my family room now, but I suppose a CNC Router, milling machine, and mig welder next to the couch would leave my wife thoroughly unamused.
when pouring a liquid out of a container (even without a lip) touch the middle section of the spoon vertically on the edge of the upper container and let the liquid stream over the surface of the spoon down towards the receiving container below without any spillage 🙂
Nelson Baietti ty for tip!
The video was beautifully made! That scene where you dusted of the gold was amazing!
wow. i don't think i could be more floored by your books if one fell off my top shelf, conked me on the head, and literally laid me out on the floor, lol. every single time, i expect something gorgeous, and i am stunned by how much you beat my expectations by. always amazing work!
You should get a silicone brush for spreading the glue. It's handy
Love all of your books and this one is especially amazing. You’re definitely an inspiration, once all of my Christmas blankets are finished, this is next on my list of things to try ☺️
For not having much experience in leather work, that book is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I can't wait to see what the other books look like when they're done.
The embossing is absolutely gorgeous. I loved it! 📖🔥🖤❣️🖤
Amazing book! I really appreciate the fact that you have listed everything you used in the tutorial, it really makes it easier to find stuff. Looking forward to the book of air!
Woooow! You did an absolutely beautiful job on the leather carving!! I can't wait to see the rest of the series of books. You can always tell a cat lover, they can work around a cat doing anything and everything. PEACE:) Happy holidays to you and your family:)
WE NEED MOAR TOMES
You guys are NAILING the delivery AND of course the amazing crafting. The passion not only in the making of the books you've been doing but the video editing too. Love! I've hit subscribe and the bell to follow.
Martina, I just watched all your bookmaking videos and I am amazed by your skill and talent. Each one is a work of art. I look forward to seeing more.
love this channel so much, been watching for so long now yet every new project never cease to amaze me!! the dedication, originality, and talent that goes into every project is so unbelievable!! so much love for you guys, you deserve waaaaay more subscribers and views!! love from australia! x
Looks great! I can't help feel though that you missed the opportunity to burn the edges of the paper on this one :(
Still could, just would need to be careful
Or gild them.
fire is my favorite element, and this book is absolutely gorgeous! i've been binging your videos, and i think this is one of my favorites! you've been inspiring me to try some traditional book binding haha
May i just say that ive only seen a few videos of your work and im totally blown away by the jaw dropping work you do! Youre are a goddess muse and i hope to see your work for many years to come!!
This is STUNNING! I can’t wait to see the others in the series!!! Are you thinking about making a spirit tome? As the five sides of the pentagram representing the 5 elements? Also super excited for the air tome!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I absolutely love all your videos, they inspired me to try bookbinding.
It is phenomenal to see how bookbinding was once done, and how we are in solidarity with the cause Notre-Dame is a good way to not forget a beautiful art that was Notre-Dame.
Lovely to see how you've taken a liking to book-binding -- and how /good/ you are at this. Mindblowing to watch this piece come together. Truly beautiful and inspirational. Can't wait for the next one. Thank you for sharing you guys' work with us!! Happy holidays!
Amazing book, each time you keep getting better and better. So exited for the other three.
Oh I really love the baking soda tip! And the entire project just blows my mind!
Since my local ren faire is coming up I decided to make a spellbook for my costume (dark enchantress mushroom fey) I didn’t have a sketchbook to take apart so I took an old notebook, and some loose leaf lined paper, cut it to size, aged it, and then I used the bottom of a stool as a frame to sew it, I love this and I’m only halfway thru making it! This is definitely going to become a hobby of mine since I’m a sucker for a leather bound sketchbook but can never find one that opens fully. These videos are amazing and I hope you do more bookbinding in the future ❤
these are some of my favourite videos ever, they're so chill to watch and the product is just always amazing, thank you!
You know what since your so inspiring I've decided to make my own book ,and it's all thanks to you although I hope that cold goes away
Can you also do the fifth element, Spirit?
Yes plz I agree, after all there are five elements worshiped :)
I wasn't aware that Spirit was an actual element. 😕 The things school neglects to mention.
I thought lightning would be the “5th” element. And something like spirit and or aether would be a unique magic. I was gonna recommend doing sub-elements like ice, storm, wood, metal, sand, crystal/gems, lava etcetera.
TheMaiaDriscol that would be awesome if she did
Lapis Lazuli earth, air, fire, water, and spirit are common categorisations of magic types. Spirit would include schools of healing, protection, the sorts of things that are more inward/internal. Not an element per se, more the things outside of the elements. That’s my interpretation, though admittedly I do not practice any sort of magic or spirituality and my knowledge is mostly based on fantastical worlds and stories.
Your lovely artwork is an inspiration. I have not practiced bookbinding in a long time, but seeing you make such amazing things makes me want to pick it up again! Perhaps one day I will be able to make something half as beautiful as the works of art you create. Thank you for posting this video!
shout out to whoever captioned this video! the descriptions of the music is a really good addition to captioning, and it adds flavor!
What I love about these videos is that you always put 100% effort no matter what 😊
I LOVE WATCHING THESE BOOK BINDING TUTORIALS! YOU'RE GETTING SO GOOD!
That is gorgeous! A true work of art! You are very talented. Thank you for sharing - love the videos!
You have inspired a new hobby for me I think. I want to make my own book of Shadows. Maybe 2 different books. (Spell, and process/information) Your work is absolutely amazing. So much passion and care go behind what you do and it's truly beautiful.
that was the most smoothly integrated plug ive ever seen. gg
Would love to actually get lessons on bookbinding from you in actual time, it would be fascinating. You are so very good at it! Thank you for all your video's, they are the best i have ever seen.❣

Also nice Oreo earrings.
Wish I could show you my book. I’m so proud of it. Followed your tutorial step by step, got myself and renovated a press, got my hubby to make me a sewing frame. So freckin happy. Thank you 😍
This is impressive! I'm making a similar project for my friend stationed in Australia, but the cover is made of leather scales like a dragon's skin and has the US marine corps symbol on the cover
Wow mad skills. Your dedication and talent are amazing. You could do tutorials on how to shoot and edit aswell as compose a complete idea from creation to execution. There is no limit to how many skills I see displayed in just the 3 journal vids I have seen. I cant wait to see some high tech stuff. Thank you both or all I'm not sure. Great watch excited about all you have shared.

Love the book. I've used this channel a lot for help and techniques when making my own books. Just saying though... What you were using as an alcaline for the coffee was baking powder, not baking soda. There is a difference between the two, but they are both alcaline and will give the same result.
Thanks for clearing that up!

You have forget light and dark tome for complete all elements
Amazing but would look better if the cover was a darker shade of red than the leather belt-things. also maybe if you could've added some blue and or purple, maybe on the carved fire designs, that would look great too.
That is fantastic! I've wanted to try to make one so watching this was perfect to get started on making my own
I used to carve leather for saddles from time to time and a trick my mentor taught me was to draw what I was carving on some wax paper and lay it over my leather, tap out the design and then deepen my lines after.
I'm glad I didn't use coffee in my art...
Wouldn't know it would damage the paper overtime.
ShellCyan You can use coffee as long as you neutralize it with baking soda first
Yes, I found out from this video...
I didn't know about this before watching though so that's why I'm grateful I never used coffee because I was thinking about using coffee to stain paper without knowing about baking soda to neutralise it.
