The phone footage was totally OK! Seriously didn't think about or notice image quality at all unless you brought it up so must be fine, and that was on a 27" monitor. Thanks for bringing us along as always Sam

I totally support wearing Birkenstock to a business meeting, but than again I’m German.
On a side note: I wish apple would work out a customizable/smoother zoom in/out while in video mode. The field of view of each lens is quite suitable for in-camera cutting/zooming, but gets somewhat compromised by the jumpiness once one switches between focal lengths. Other than that, totally „vlog-able“.

Haha, I know that sandals are a no-go in these kind of situations but I didn't even take normal shoes with me on that trip lol. Yes I agree a smoother transition between the lenses would be nice. Although I like how quick I can switch between them.

Wow Samuel, it's so generous of you to share these very personal experiences. Your affection for your grandfather, your son and your family is really evident here. That's worth sharing in its own right but it's also the perfect demonstration of knowing when things are worth documenting with your photography. It's also really cool to share the quick introductions from your meetup, it reminded me of travel experiences in Japan and elsewhere, those connections are really valuable. Would love to see and hear more about your grandfather's work and life.

Hello there. Happy to see you visiting your birthplace. My birthplace is now on fire for the non-stop half year of was and I even don't imagine when I will able to go there for visit. Such a timing - last week I renewed my 6 years old Galaxy s7 and I was great with the old stuff, but recently cameras and many other functions stopped working completely so it was the time to get something new :-) About taking this video with the phone - it's absolutely ok, the content is what's important. Film it with a VHS camera just stay it alive, interesting, and natural. CU

Always enjoy your videos. 2 suggestions - try the DJI wireless mics. No wires so no chance of knocking the camera over. Perhaps a small plastic mirror with a magnet glued to the back with a magnet to mount to the MagSafe and you can see yourself (for framing) on the front camera. Really enjoyed seeing your Grandfathers work and hearing a bit of his story. Thank you. It was so touching to watch your Grandmother looking at the images of your son.

I thought the iPhone footage was just fine... Using the GR you know all about how large gear can take you out of the moment, I think that's something most of your viewers get. I could see where the iPhone allowed you to stay in the moment. I do appreciate how you film and edit B-roll with bigger cameras, I actually think you're one of the better UA-camrs for B-roll in general. But for vlogs like this, the smartphone does a good job. Also, I enjoyed the video in general, my wife enjoys watching your videos as well when I'm watching them and I think she connected with your thoughts and feelings on losing your grandfather. She was close with her grandfather and lost him earlier this year. Many people do not understand how the loss of a grandparent can have a strong affect on someone as an adult, we have found. I can tell he definitely had a strong artistic vision, and the work you showed was quite powerful, I think especially since it was created while he was in the hospital. That work really represented his character and how you feel about it. Well done.

Personally I didn't like the iphone as much as your usual X-H1 footage as the separation isn't so nice, less poetic - though I can see nearly everyone loves the iphone, hah ha.
I remember your days with the Canon C100 and appreciate the amount of effort required to film with that but you created some very poetic and memorable videos with that camera.. soft subtle, emotive, beautiful. I particularly remember the one about working with your father on the holiday house building a deck/ jetty. All the best Sam

    great stuff...
I enjoyed everything, but the stuff about your grandfather was wonderful.
I know that you had much to do and Ricoh / videos pay the bills, but I think you should have given yourself more time with your family and the memory of your grandfather, who obviously meant so much to you. Have you thought about putting together a documentary about your grandfather? I'm sure it would be a labor of love that would not bring in much money. But on the other hand, a personal story about your family might in the long run bring lots of views. Although, you may want to keep your memories private... Just a thought.
Making your photobook more personal sounds like a good idea.
Though a non-narrative book about your year in black and white would have been good as well.
Maybe just a zine with of just black whites? I don't know... I was looking forward to what I presumped was going to be a non-narrative book documenting your year in black and white. Both sound good. can see why your book is slow in coming. I am having trouble deciding and it's not even my book! :P

So sad that I may never get the chance to visit Japan. As a currently unvaxed American my travel options are limited right now. But I honestly just haven't felt the need to get it yet. Also after the incident with the plane on my last flight I am not a huge fan of flying all that much any more. But moving on, is Japan still closed to outsiders? I know tourism was big for Japan and I do want to go there before I can't any more. Maybe I already missed that window though huh?

Well what a great video. A very personal journey I felt priviledged to witness. Your Grandfather was a great artist and you captured him well in your photographs of him. I'm so glad his studio will be left untouched. You will when you have more time want to sit in his studio and reflect and absorb his memory and the work he did in it. My grandfather was a great travel photographer and he inspired me to become one myself. People often get caught up in the technicalities of things like using the best camera for vlogging and sound. Let me just say that I found your vlogging on your phone was great because it was more spotanious, more real and I can tell by your vlogging you felt more relaxed with less to deal with just you and your phone. If I were you I'd stick to using your phone more often. the footage looked great on my PC and the sound was just fine. Making videos more personal is a great idea. I think shooting that way will make you want to make more content. Great job Samuel!!
