Edible Mountain - How To Make Reishi Mushroom Tea

  • The Reishi mushroom has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, and is one the most widely marketed mushrooms on the planet. Learn how to make Reishi mushroom tea with Hannah Hedrick, Community Educator at Grow Ohio Valley!
    Ganoderma tsugae, also known as the Hemlock varnish shelf mushroom, are Reishi mushrooms found throughout Appalachia and used by herbalists all over the region. Dead hemlock trees are a favorite spot to find them growing. There's no known look-alikes for Reishi mushrooms, although there are several varieties found in the region.
    Reishi mushrooms are reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and may enhance immune response. They have also been shown to slow blood clotting, and should be avoided if you are taking a blood thinner, undergoing chemotherapy, or taking immunosuppressants.
    One of the simplest ways to consume Reishi is to make it into tea. Once you harvest wild Reishi, slice them into strips or other small pieces as soon as possible; the mushrooms begin to harden as they dry, and are eventually impossible to break. “You can break a coffee grinder trying to cut one of these things up,” said Hedrick.
    To make Reishi tea, heat 3 oz of dried mushroom or 25 ounces of fresh mushroom to boiling. Let it boil for at least 30 minutes, or as long as 2 hours. You can optionally add ginger, orange peel, or,honey in the last 10 minutes for flavor. Strain the boiled tea and enjoy!

    I've been finding a lot in 2024. I've been using and making tinctures and dual extracts of reishi and chaga. I got into mushrooms to suppliment my income but have become a big fan of using them. I like the dual extract in cranberry juice. I add some chaga tea or extract to dull the bitterness of the cran juice. I sleep like a baby and my hair is growing back!

      LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself.
      This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.

    Have you processed any of these that have dried and hardened on the tree itself? There are two distinct layers - lower (padded) and upper (crusty) - which these form when dried, and I was curious about which of the two layers imparts to the tea. The padded layer is easy to slice into and separate but the crusty layer is one of the hardest things my camping knife has been through.

    are the medicinal qualities enhanced after they dropped their spores??? Just asking as there may have been a reason for saying afterwards.
    I think I saw something where it said mushrooms should be gathered in a open type container so spores can be dispersed as moving your way around.

    • @rayyanali4471
      @rayyanali4471 2 роки тому

      Spores are also valued though just the mushrooms are good enough. Remember that this is still a medicine; too much can cause severe liver damage.

    I just harvested a couple a few weeks ago up in the mountains. I made mushroom broth and they made me feel quite weird. I think I am allergic. It gave me a headache and made me weak for a day. Only took a few sips since it was my first time trying it. The taste wasn't bad but very earthy/mushroomy. I would add some type of citrus, herbs or seasoning. I wouldnt call it a tea either. Its a mushroom broth in my opinion.
