Bear's Head - Hericium abietis (Sister species to Lion's Mane)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Delicious, beautiful, easy to ID, a great mushroom for beginner’s to learn!
Here in the PNW we’ve got a Hericium species we refer to as “Bear’s Head”, the Hericium abietis grows on conifers and looks nearly identical to a few ‘sister species’ that grow worldwide. You’ll hear many, many common names for Hericium species because of their popularity, unique shape and the fact that there are many different types in different global regions. The great thing is, all other species that look like this are also delicious and edible! So, even if you live outside of the PNW, you may be able to find Hericium as well, however the environment and tree it grows on may be different in your bioregion.

I just moved to Maine, just read about this mushroom online, and my first day out I practically stumbled on it!! Couldn't be luckier or happier. On to the the cooking and eating part. Loved your video.
Obviously informative. Also, pretty easy to watch and listen to somebody who is this intelligent *and* adorable.
gardenzombie Ha...why thank you :) My brother does a wonderful job of filming and editing these videos-it's a team effort for sure!
Settle down little tiger.
What a beautiful mushroom, it looks like the ice formation on a frozen waterfall.
This lady is so cool! Full of great information and also seems very down to earth and chill. Great combo
😊👍
I was turned on to Lion's mane mushrooms because I've had so much brain trauma and found your video and channel and now I want to go mushroom exploring like you. Thank you so much for the inspiration and informative videos!
+Bodacious Wonk You're Welcome! So glad you're enjoying them :)
Thank you so very much, whenever I'm feeling stressed, all I have to do is watch one of your videos.
I always love the Pacific Northwest.
God bless
I just found This on a hike and took a BEAUTIFUL picture of it, but I had NO clue what it was. I am brand new to the PNW and am enjoying taking pictures of all the neat fungi in the forests :D
Oh my word! That little guy was so cute sitting there on his log. Nom Nom. Loved this video a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! (Yes, two months later I'm catching up on comments...ha) But I wanted to mention, that little guy, I actually had seen it a week earlier and it was just emerging-about the size of the quarter. So he had grown up quite a bit since I'd last seen him :)
Great video! My partner and I found some of this in the forest the other day and admired it, then realised how sought-after it was as an edible, we just went back to the forest at 8pm in the dark and -5c temperature to retrieve it.. haha. Subscribed too, your channel is great. Ash, Australia.
"Dirt spice is Old Spice for Hippies." That is just too funny! Sounds like patchouli.
J C. Would you hang on a cross for 3 hours' like the other JC. did for you, & me? My inquiring minds wants to know. Good luck with your eternity. Love. Steve
I'd do that for Jesus, @@stevemitz4740 God bless you.
So would I. "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." [John 15:13]
Would foul mouthed You [or your 3 silly up-votes] steal God's name, but not his Love & what he did for You?
@geezusispan; What compelled you to say that? Do you advise on other SIXHURB type words, I wonder?
Thanks for this! I found about 15lbs of Bears Head this weekend and had to go learn more about it! Much appreciated
Hi there! Glad it was helpful ;)
You are so lucky to live in a place like that. We have plenty of cool mushrooms down in east Texas where it's quite humid, combined with multiple trees, but for 3 months its wayyy too cold, and in the summer its generally too hot until we get to august. I actually just got into mushroom hunting recently and you've been a great help in my growing knowledge of them.
Eleanor, wonderful and beautiful videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking us along on your adventures.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting and enjoying them!
I love how you talk to the mushrooms!, just like there your friends , your little buddies.
That's so awesome.
Haha...you know, I'm not sure I even noticed that I do that until now...
If you listen closely, they speak to you as well!
i really like your videos they have a very nice elegant loving appreciation for mushrooms and plants that stays with you thanks and keep up the good work
Please do more of your videos. They are wonderful.
U have a beautiful soul ... I am glad to see u r using it to bring nature back ... Thank u
Yellow Elanor talks to her mushrooms! Yes, she is the mushroom whisperer! Amazing and informative! Thanks for sharing your wisdom like this.
***** Haha...I'm guessing by the name "Los Zollers" this is mi tio Mateo ;) Thank You!
These videos are great -- very informative -- and Elanor is beyond charismatic!
smart and pretty, very cool! thanks for the video, love mushroom hunting
I grow my own Hericium erinaceus. It's really surprising how heavy and dense they are. Delicious too!
+Jesus Christ
Hey, what substrate have you been using? I want to cultivate them at home as well!
+Jesus Christ I too would like to know, I found a bunch in a well decayed tree and I'd like to cultivate it inside and out. They're pretty well finished with returning the stump to the earth!
You can use whatever wood substrate, but most commonly people use sawdust (supplemented)
That tripped me out when you said it helps with dementia because when you cut it off of the log my first thought was that it looks exactly like a brain stem and is set up lobed like a brain!
I'm a Japanese mushroom hunter and I'm a little surprised to know some US people enjoying Matsutake. As you know it is sold at high price such as 30 to 100USD per 100g.
I know there are a little different(whitish and weak smell) but much more Matsutake in US than Janan. But I have assumed it is ignored because of the smell. I thought It marries Japanese taste and dishes but only Japanese like it.
I like all the wild mushrooms and now we are having the season of Morel and Rhodophyllus clypeatus(plum mushroom) here. I hope I could visit US to enjoy wild mushrooms some day after my retirement.
Is it possible to visit the forest for a foreign travelar?
Absoluley
gri folax you can come to the US anytime . the US is a vast land as you know with many woods and forests
dustin, What? I think you're on the wrong page. You're making a childish argument for zero reason.
i love japanese food, i have to look it up now.. i grow pink and gold oyster
my friend this is America.. you can go anywhere as long as its not restricted being like military stuff .. i walked out to the woods out back today and found 20lb of chicken of the woods on one tree.. and a few old man of the woods.. hope you get to visit us soon .. best wishes good luck hunting
You're awesome :). Keep on picking, please never lose this hobby and share it with everyone :D!
I just ran across your channel and really enjoyed it. This video captures the delight of mushrooming with intent and discovering other species along the way. The cooking discussion was a nice addition as well. Keep up the good work!
+sanjuancb Thank You! I appreciate the encouragement :)
So happy to find your channel. Great work, passion, and entertainment
Thank You :)
Thanks for this! Inspired me to go out mushroom hunting for the first time yesterday. I'm in N. FL it's a little drier and not the mushroom paradise you are in. Wandered around for a couple hours with nothing to show for it except a few tiny puff balls and dried up tree mushrooms. Then, on the last part of the last path, found a small Lion's Mane, then a large one. A bit firmer than lobster, but delicious. Thought I felt a beneficial mental effect, but not as dramatic as the ones I grow in the 1/2 pint jars. Hope that wasn't just luck, will definitely go out again.
uh oh.... disclaimer this video is for entertainment purposes only she is an expert, talk to a local expert first
U shouldn't do mushrooms if u gotta play foot ball... they drug test in the NFL dont they?

I am about to clean and cook my first ever lions mane!!! Thank youuuuu for posting so much fungi info 😍😍😍
You're welcome!!
Love ur video! Nice to know i am not the only pretty lady out lookin' for shrooms. Happy huntin'. Peace.
Awesome! 9:30 Lions Mane sold as a nootropic supplement. I've been going out picking bags of mushrooms every day because it's been raining constantly! Just boletes of course, that's all we pick, My wife came from Russia and we've been married 15 years and I'm finally picking mushrooms and not feeling like I need her to inspect whatever I pick. I really appreciate your video, if only there were more people out there (like you) but then again I would have a really tough time mushroom hunting! Russians are my biggest mushroom hunting enemies and friends!
Good stuff girl ..my favorite of all next to Chantrells...found a beauty today...can't wait to eat!!!
A "no-brainer" mushroom that heals the brain. The forest contains all the medicine we need... God is good.
Yes, & "Mother Earth" the Goddes is good ;) to us her children as well.

+Siti Rahmah Ismail Thank you :)
+Yellow Elanor most welcome
So much passion for mushrooms...love it:)
just found some nice specimens of this over in eastern Oregon today. gonna cook them up tonight. love your show BTW!
Thanks so much! Glad you've had some good success this fall!
Elanor like your presentations. Been watching your videos, good. :)
You might describe hericium as looking like coral. Great video!!
People do call it the Coral Tooth mushroom sometimes! I don't tend to use that name since there are many other 'coral mushrooms' (like all the Ramaria) that go by a coral-like common name. But good description none the less.
you rock, this was a lovely walk!
Thank you!
Keep up the great videos. Such a wonderful thing.
Phil McCain Thank You! I will, I've been enjoying doing them, plus all the more reason to get out and look for mushrooms :)
I live in NH and this year there was so much rain! And with it so many different kinds of 🍄!!
the passion of the shroom... you have that passion...it was a fun time exploring with you... thanks...
Awesome video, mushrooms are really interesting lol especially this one
SigmaKidd Thanks! And I couldn't agree more, it's one of my favorites (if you couldn't already tell).
You rock!! i can't stop watching
You are so precious! Thanks for sharing this video It was very informative and interesting!
Cinnamon and dirty socks hahaha
Love your enthusiasm! Keep it up!
I've never seen anything like that before. Since I became interested in foraging for wild plants and mushrooms, I've discovered lots of things I never knew existed. Loved the video, and just subscribed today. Not disappointed in that decision either. Can't wait to see what else you have.
Bears head looks like coral...Its good to leave a little of the fungi so it can proliferate...my friend uses honey and leaves a small bit in a rotting tree trunk so it can keep growing...good way to give back to nature :)
your videos are fascinating and charming. thank you for your work. entertaining relaxing education - what a treat.
I was happy to have found this for the first time last summer on my own land! Still haven't figured out the best way to cook but we've eaten it sauteed. Not bad.
You are the best source of information....I love your videos, wish I was your neighbor!!
You are a professor and a mentor You are Life!!!
Thank you...I really love showing folks what's out there.
the fact that it looks like nerves is an observation i had as you said its to treat that in our system.
Great video glad I found your channel I didn't know these were rare I seem to always find them lucky me I guess lol

+Louise Hiker Thank you! My bother is the one who does the filming and editing for me. I recognize your name, you must have recently started following me on Instagram?
Very informative - Love your videos. Your workshop on May 8th was fantastic too.

Such great videos, keep it up!
thanks for sharing your videos,so informative and a pleasure to listen too.
Thank you very much :)
Just watched your video after finding what we figured was Bears head fungus to make sure this was the same thing, and after hearing it had no poisonous look alike, and tasted like crab meat, I had to try it and was amazed of how much it does taste like crab meat. I don't remember ever seeing this kind of mushroom and now we have a full dead gray birch with big clumps of this fantastic mushroom which just became my favorite ! Thanks
Very cool! I just did an ASMR about a mushroom-forest adventure. Thanks for all the great info and lovely visuals.

Screw waiting till next season... Found and ID'ed ten species today! Learned a few new ones too. (Black-footed polypore, and the splitgill mushroom)
I found this by trying to look up how to airbrush faux fur.
I’m interested now! I didn’t know that there was so much to mushrooms in the woods!

Why thank you :)
Thanks for the video, I found one of these in my area of central oregon I had no idea it was a mushroom!
You're welcome! Next time you come across one maybe you can enjoy it as a meal.
I will next time I find one! Thanks for replying to my comment. I really miss your content and would love to see more if you are will to make more videos this season! If your ever in Central Oregon hunting let me know I would love to help yall out!
You know, Central Oregon is a place that I've wanted to do videos. I lived in Bend for a time and still have good friends there--I visit a few times a year but have never done any filming yet.
I found the lions mane up along the cascade lakes hwy next to lucky lake. It can only be reached by hiking about 2 miles uphill but is well worth it when you get to the top. When you come to bend next check it out as I'm sure you will like it! :)
A bit of a hike in always makes it better. That's a great area to go check out, thanks!
Thanks for presenting this to me. As a european i don´t know this particular one, but i had (and have) an almost spiritual connection to hericium coralloides. Looks veeeery similar, the taste and the benefits from it are incredible, maybe better than the incredible lion's mane.
I really enjoyed this - and I'll definitely be watching some more! ***** 3 gold stars
***** Awesome! Thanks :)
Didn't work the first time:

Yellow Elanor Wow! Beautiful dear, thnx for sharing, I am completely out of this knowledge about mushrooms, I am mexican and live in Germany, here people go out in the woods for I have no idea when, in what temperature for example, in México even in the winter we get mushrooms but normally we do not go "hunting" them because the native ones go, get them and sell them to us, so we are safe to eat them because they know they are eatable, my greatgrandma, from the tribe of the Nahuatl people knew and I ate them as a child in her house, but my mom just never took us and now sometimes I went here with friends but the last years we have been not doing it, busy, busy, busy!! And I am looking or some info to go myselef, therefore your video is very helpful! There in Northamerica like on which months you get them and under which temperature? Thanx a lot for sharing you both, the one jperson that gives you company and is filming too ;) Big mex hug to all the mushrooms lovers here.
Fantastic video!
Hi Elanor,
I like to hunt mushrooms also.
I am trying my hand at growing Morels. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have all kinds of Mushrooms growing in the woods.
IV been following you for years on Instagram, how am I only finding your UA-cam channel now?
Thanks so much for making videos!
Haha, welcome to the UA-cam side of things Tom. I haven't promoted the YT much because I wasn't adding new content, but that'll be changing soon!
I wish we were neighbors, so we could go on mushroom hunts together. Although, our husbands might become frustrated trying to find us half the time.
I keep meaning to come back to reply to this comment, thank you! It made me laugh when I read it. I'm always up for a good, crawling around in the moss mushroom hunt with another lady :)
+Yellow Elanor Awe, thank you. I think you could teach us a lot, and we love to learn.
You guys are my type of women! Not in an inappropriate way. I just don't know many women foragers and it's awesome to see!
David Dahl there are several mushrooms that are REALLY easy to identify. Chanterelles are yellow with false gills. Hericium has NO look alikes. Chicken of the Woods have no look alikes. Lobsters are super easy. It really comes down to doing a little research. I've been foraging morels since I was 5. I've been hunting EVERYTHING else for 5 years now, all because I tried a chicken of the woods, and have been buying identification and cultivation books ever since. I'm now certified in identification and licensed to sell wild mushrooms to commercial establishments in the state of Minnesota. If learning about what nature provides for free food, I would say KEEP ON IT! MUSHROOMS ARE AMAZING!!!
I'm lucky to have a forest loving friend to forage with. My husband understands when we're together we'll be out nearly all day. Can't say I haven't gotten lost, but I'd rather get lost than not go!
Awesome!! Have you ever dried it and made a tincture ? I found 3 massive heads on a split birch tree and would like to make something.. It was crazy on the tree was chaga, birch polypore, horse hoof, and the bears head. the universe was really showing me the medicine that day. I couldn't believe it
Good ol Oregon
Shout out from Portland!
Excellent information! 🐻🍄
***** Thank You! Haha, and perfect emojis for it too.
Love at first sight and an instant like.
