i mean there are plenty people with more subscribers, but in my opinion you are the best art youtuber (at least that i know). you are so professional about your workflow, i love your stylistic direction (leyendecker, rockwell, early disney maybe as well? but it is still very much your own style, its almost like it jumped out of time sometimes) and its so rare to have genuinely wholesome art that makes the viewer smile. really feel inspired when i watch your channel. thanks for sharing your work!
I really appreciate your comment, thanks for taking the time! ☺️🧡
@@ChrisHongArt thank you for pinning and replying! really appreciate it :>
Chris:”lemme make a simple piece” me: sis you know you like detail
too true 😂😂
literally EVERY single time i've approached a painting thinking "oh this will be simple and easy!" it's one of the hardest things i've painted lol!! i stopped telling myself an idea "will be simple" lol, it turned out beautifully though!
Same xD
Thats the thing: you keep your audience because they like your process, your road of learning and experience. If you do the same over and over it gets old.
This was very nice to watch.
thanks so much Steffie, that means a lot! ☺️🧡
That "is this digital?" in the thumbnail brought out MY insecurities lol
I'd define it like this:
Rendering = Defining the texture/material of an object
Lighting = Defining the light source for consistent shadows
Lioba is ruthless, because she can just redo or repaint an entire piece if she don't like it even if its already finished and beautiful. But that's one of the things that i like about her. Chris and Lioba's views in their art is what inspires me so much.
Believe it or not, it feels reassuring and comforting to know that even the artists I admire and whose work inspires me learn and never stop doing so. It helps me realize that everyone makes mistakes, and everyone can learn from these mistakes, so it's not always easy and it's all a matter of hard work and no one is born with the ability to get every piece right from the start, and the result is always rewarding. Thank you for talking about this freely, and I hope you continue to make wonderful art.
Thanks so much for your comment, I'm glad to hear that's what you get out of a video like this, because I sometimes here that I "complain" too much 😂 when I'm just being honest about my experience!😁
I love the ribbons on the figure on the left. The folds are very Maxfield Parrish. Also, your decision to loosen up the background was absolutely spot on. Thanks for sharing your art and techniques!
This is actually one of my favourite pieces of yours. I absolutely adore the looser, more abstract style. I think it suits your work very well! Everything about this piece is beautiful, and it seems so strange to hear you talk about your artistic insecurities, when in my eyes you are GOALS!!
I LOVE the painting and think you should definitely make prints because its so different! I also really loved the convo. and it really struck me in the head the fact that, art is a reflection of the artist, and our final piece and process shows our personality traits, whether we're conscious of it or not.
Yes! Prints! Prints!
Well Lioba sure is very good with painting watercolors, but most of her art being based on photomontage with light already settled by the picture, it tends to be easier to paint without setting the light by herself because all the point is to trace the picture and paint it with the photomontage as reference.
When you start from 0 with a sketch and a full drawing from your imagination it’s always difficult to know where you want to put your highlights and shadow, which elements would be nice in the background or as a character design... The process is completely different and you can struggle with it. But the most important thing is trying. ;) Light is a difficult thing to master and I think it’s okay to work on details (I do the same). Maybe you should do simple watercolors doodles, with simple techniques. Tori is a good example for these exercices. :)
not to throw Lioba under the bus lol since I admire her ability greatly, but it IS difficult to come come up with everything from scratch! XD I should really incorporate more references into my work 😅 but everyone's process is different you're right! ^^
I come back to these painting process videos every once in a while! I love your thought process and style 💕
Listening to your struggles with this piece, I can really relate with how you feel. Getting caught up in the other details of the piece can really take attention away from what you feel should be the centerpiece. In my drawings, I tend to lean towards more of realism because whenever I use references, I have a habit of trying to replicate every since detail I see. But, after doing this, I can see that my drawing loses the point of interest that I wanted to convey to others. I have been watching others draw again on UA-cam and I am really fascinated by how differently they can represent an object/thing/person through their style. The exaggeration of the limbs, the way they color, the way they line their art, etc. changes the overall piece. Even differing mediums can change the feel of the piece. Playing around with these factors are really helping me not feel as stagnant and more expressive in art. Maybe it could help you too.
Nice painting though, I think it turned out very nice. :) Hope to see more from you.
i have the same issue with beating myself during the creation or rendering, especially if i'm fighting with the medium. And i realized that my best drawing and painting are the one where i loosen up and just enjoy the processus of making something !
your work is beautiful ! do no forget that !
its amazing how you use muted colors without making them muddy. your way of working on a piece by planning sketches and testing color schemes is too advanced for me--i still struggle to understand the decisions you make (my artistic sense still need working on orz) but its so fun watching someone so competently going at it, your logical process and everything haha. your videos are teaching me plenty!!
I wanted to say a huge thank you to you Chris because you allowed me to understand mistakes that I make myself and which I couldn't quite put my finger on . Those moments in which you are fighting your insecurities based on all the previous experiences you had are really worth sharing ! I feel it boosted my confidence to see you conquer your insecurities so successfuly , even though you were not always happy with your work, because it showed me that one single work can really allow yourself to improve drastically on many aspects , but only if you really tackle directly the problems you are struggling with... and also maintaining a major amount of fun in the process 😁😁
I completely relate to the part where you were saying you felt like you weren't saying anything with your art.
I'm kind of in a rut right now, but I'm sure I'll get inspired looking at your videos.
That's what I love most about your style: The Norman Rockwell aesthetic of it. Rockwell is one of my all-time favorite painters, and your style is very much a children's book interpretation of his work. I think you did wonderfully on this painting, and the extra touches done to the background make it very unique in comparison to your other paintings.
Just like your other pieces, I'm in love with this one. You're one of my favorite artists. ❤
I love it when how you explain how you tackle problems like this. I have an enormous fear of backgrounds and I don't know how to fix it - I can figure out what to put there but how to make it coherent and to keep the focal point the star of the show... that's really challenging for me. It helps to get an idea of a solution - thank you a lot!
Beautiful piece!
I think you really nailed the hairline honestly and I think you could use that again in the future to draw focus to the main focal point of the piece. That “sunlit” lighting you used for the ribbon on the left was incredibly nice, and really lifted everything upward (even the mood?) and the splash of the coffee was great.
Thank you for sharing this whole process!
omgggg! Thank you so much for the compliments!!!🙈 But your splatter effects look STUNNING!!! I love them!!!
I love the fact that one of my favourite youtubers watch each other too, lol. ;-)
I have a loooong way to go with them 😂😂 I'll have to study harder how you achieve yours! 😘
I think this painting turned out really fun and playful. I don't think you always need a reason to create something. This piece was a way for you to experiment and try something out of your comfort zone. Taking steps back helps you to feather go forwards. I absolutely love this painting and I'd very much would love to buy a print of this from you. I can't wait to see what you make next ♡♡♡
thanks so much Andy! ☺️🧡
@@ChrisHongArt No thank you for inspiring me and others ≧∇≦ ♡♡♡
You have such a skill for articulating your process.
Sis I was like thinking "Yeah, I'm just gonna watch it to relax myself" and then I was like "WHY SHE DOESN'T LIKE IT?" and then, out of the blue, I had like some light tears because it was beautiful and I got catched in this piece, I love it and I love how you talk about it.
everything you do is beautiful please dont stop
I love your videos! I think you are a great artist. But also because the struggle is so relatable! Often times watching artists on UA-cam it’s like „just doing this and this, easygoing - tada just finished a freaking masterpiece with ease and done!“ when my painting process is so much more like yours!! Always struggling! Lol. Thank you for inspiring me to keep going! :) Also, I’m suffering from a bad case of „background drawing fear“ as well, and one thing that helps me if I have an idea for characters but no ideas for a fitting background is to just look at random pictures on the web which relate to the characters. Example: in your case with the clown I would have looked for circus tent interiors on Pinterest or something. Hope this helps! And thank you for making great art & videos, again! 🌻
Also the painting looks so good, I think you should make prints! ✨🤗🌻
Thanks so much for watching and I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed this one! 😘
Chris Hong Art Aw, thank you for replying! 😍 Also, one thing I noticed watching your videos is you seem to doubt yourself a lot whilst making art and I know it’s hard to stop that, but you can really be proud of yourself more, you are doing so well!! Just wanted to tell you to give yourself more credit! Have some gold stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
You are an amazing artist. I hope you know that and you speak life into yourself when doing your art. I only wish I was as skilled as you.
I absolutely love your art. Your style, your values, your gestures, everything. I really hope I get to be at your level some day. 💕
Yes yes to prints of this one! Also your art is so good and I enjoy seeing your process !
I would definitely buy this as a print. I think it's good you're trying different things and growing as an artist. I love your art style and bought some of your clown stickers and loved them. You're so talented!!
thanks so much Elaine, so happy to hear you loved them!☺️🧡🧡🧡
I only found your channel a few days ago, but I'm so glad I did! I like to watch these videos while working on my art pieces, and I feel like I've already learned so much! Your honesty is so encouraging! Thank you for sharing your work and processes with us! It's a joy to see!
I'm so happy to hear it's been helpful in anyway! thanks for stopping by Timothy! ☺️
I love all off your paintings and your videos!! You are soo good at explaining both the technical and emotional diffucultis that comes with painting with watercolour. It was really fun to see you painting more loselly this time 🎨👌🏻😍
thanks Karin, glad you enjoyed this one! ☺️🧡
Just to let you know that this piece is amazing! Just because it’s different, you shouldn’t be scared. I really like it. Thank you so much for sharing your work online, it’s seriously a treat to the eye!
thanks Joana!☺️
Very cute...looks very spontaneous!
I'd really like to see more of your thoughts throughout your process on things such as this. How you come to conceptualize a painting. Especially the poses, if you use references for the poses, and the colors... What you meant by "color promps". Mostly how you go about making your decisions, maybe? :) Thank you
There's nothing that says that everything you put out there has to be the exact same style. Style is something that evolves along with us in our journey. And I would even say that this painting is the same style as your usual stuff, with some paint splatters. I don't think anyone would be alarmed or disappointed. I'm saying this because I don't want you to feel so scared or anxious about people's reactions to your art. Yes there is a delicate balance between doing what you love and doing what will sell, but again I don't see this as much different from your usual stuff. Translate: it's awesome!
You are so intelligent! The way you convey so much artistic knowledge in fluid art is inspiring. Motivates me to keep studying so that one day I can do the same
This is my favorite painting of yours ❤️🥰
I love this one so much! The splashes on the background are giving some playful personality to the painting and the whole idea with spilling the tea is so cute... 💗😊
thanks Elena, glad you enjoy this one!😘
Ya know a teacup would convey the message of tea better than a coffee mug.
I Love love these two 💕! I agree that this piece is a little bit different from your most recent work , but I disagree that people would find it out of place in your shop. It is cohesive to the collection in that it has the same beautiful use of color we have seen in your other work and the clowns motif feels familiar, but the mark making and characters in this piece also have a new fresh energy to them. I love this exploration and I have enjoyed watching it emerge in your process video. Cheers :)
Thanks Raeyanna! ☺️🧡 I'm happy to hear what you think!!
wow this was so real and raw. thank you.
Hearing and seeing your thought process is AMAZING! Your process of drawing the eye through details and destruction is really wonderful to watch... you come up with visual solutions that I make me so jealous. Lol Love watching Lioba Bruckner make her own, unique solutions as well. You are a huge help to us aspiring artists. Love the expression and story of this piece! 👍
glad to see even people ahead of me in skill level can do a piece that feels like a regression at first
In one video I learned so much. I subscribed to you recently because of your art style and your art pieces. They are so different from what I make; different stories, colours, art style and all. And I love it. You inspire me to try some new stuff. Thank you.
aw I'm glad you're enjoying these things even though they are different! thanks for stopping by! 😃👋
There are so many women art youtuber who have the same style but I love that you have your own unique style. I love the particular glow and essence of your work. Keep it up and don't be so hard on yourself just be more mindful and enjoy the process. I'm a huge fan. What are your favorite brushes you use for watercolor and gouache?
i love how critical you are with yourself and i love your paintings through out the whole process lmao, this is beautiful😍 i love it, i think you should sell prints! its stunning
Thanks Diego! 😘 I'm glad you don't mind the self-criticisms XD
@@ChrisHongArt haha im self critical with my work too!
Omg I would totally buy a print!
This painting is amazing!!! 🥰
I love how the contours of the characters blur into the background and in combination with the paint splatter it emphasizes that the girl is telling something surprising!
thanks Claudia, I'm happy to hear how that comes across! :)
Love this painting 🖼 beautiful work.
Thank you very much for sharing. I don’t know if I learn more from the step by step or by your talk. You certainly reflect common artist insecurities, but your storybook style inspires me hugely.
stunning piece and stunning talk
Stunning! I love it!
I like this a lot😎 And something different isn't always a bad thing. This is great😎
Worth it! This is adorable!
I love the detail with the coffee splatter 😍
Awesome as always!! 😍💞💝💝
As someone who's just stumbled onto your channel, and who's been following Lioba's amazing work, also, I think this picture is VERY print-worthy!! It's interesting to hear your thought process, and to see the stages of dissatisfaction you went through, to get it to where you were comfortable with the balance. I think I would buy, and enjoy it on my wall, just saying. :)
hehe thanks DrQuizzler! 🧡☺️
Beautiful
I love it of course!
I really love how this turned out .. I especially like how the white glove draws you into the centre of the painting and it’s really interesting to hear your thought processes. Thank you! 😊💜
I love this! Would enjoy seeing a few more in this style. Great work and a joy to watch as always.
i just want to say how much I love and relate to your videos
Thanks Brenda, I'm happy to hear you've been enjoying them! 🧡☺️
Beautiful, please make more paintings in this style. 🤗
I think this is one of, if not the best, pieces you have ever done
I love that painting!
One of my favorite so far! This piece is lovely, i love the atmosphere, the characters, the colors...very beautiful.
You’re a brave person to share your ups AND downs! Extremely talented, keep plugging away!
Oh it’s Fine! Some mom will love it for her baby’s nursery. Everything doesn’t have to be lit like a Pixar movie. Gimme a break!
For me- I love how abstract it is. And I know you feel like it's not in ur usual style- even that people would get confused by this painting however- I don't see what's so wrong about putting out a piece that highlights the function of looking at things more abstractly- it helps the viewer to gain only the most essential understanding of the piece. Really for me this piece stands out the most as being one of the most impactful. I can learn a lot about the strengths of my own painting when i compare it to this one.
I'm happy to hear how this one stands out for you, thanks for sharing! ☺️🧡
I personally like looser confident paintings but learn so much from your intentional planned pieces. Thanks again for sharing! I love this one💕
It‘ s an awfully cute illustration!😻🥰🥰
I love your style so much! You inspire me
Once again amazing stuff.
You should definitely consider making prints. This is an awesome piece, you should be proud of yourself!
Hope to see more. Love it
Seen ur sketches within the first few mins ..instantly subbed to u thos r soooooo cute
Lovely!!! I love adding splashes in general, so I really enjoyed this.
Have a great month!! 😊
I loved it, you just keep doing YOU and your style and how you approach figures and faces and arms and legs and feet and hands will always be Chris. No matter if they are done in broad brush strokes, or tight or single color or with a limited pallet to push what 2 or 3 colors can do in painting. Every picture I have ever seen of yours always says Chris Hong to me. You just have a way to draw and paint that is really YOU. I guess what I am trying to say is Free yourself up to try any new thing that comes into your head and your style will show through. I could pick one of your pictures out among 100's if I was asked where is Chris Hong, ( reference to where is waldo) sorry for the bad joke. Please keep making you tubes of your art journey through this life, I really enjoy watching you paint and design your work. Luv from Michigan.
awww 😭 haha that's so sweet, thanks for sending those positive vibes!!💪😤🧡
You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself! This looks incredible. Love it 😍
Gorgeous painting today Chris! Personally, I would put it on your shop- you never know when you're going to paint something that evolves your style! Try to relax and enjoy it, don't feel like you need to justify or equalify your experimentation, it's how we grow! \o/
You are soooo amazing!! This is super super inspiring!! Thank you!!
Watching you work always puts me in the mood for painting. :)
Love this one!
Beautiful piece! Your work is so inspiring!
I love your process videos! I like how you describe it, it's not only a speed up video. Btw, sometimes I wish I could draw as carelessly as when I was a kid. There was no fear, only fun! I also would really love to see a video from you about your inspirations! Keep up amazing work :D
oops I accidentally disliked this comment when I meant to heart it LOL that's a video I've been meaning to make for the longest time now 😂😂😂 I think I just get too busy w the pieces I'm currently working on 😅 thanks for your input!
Superb painting 🖼
Awesome video 👍👌
Love it
Amazing! I also have a problem with backgrounds all the time. It was nice to hear you talk about that. You did a great job! I would make prints - it's beautiful.
thanks Jodi!☺️🧡
love your art
I love this one 😍 it's one of my favorites that you have done.
Honey you're my favorite artist and the painting that you did was absolutely gorgeous!!! It might be a bit different for you but it's so beautiful and it really goes with your other art too. Please do make prints and don't overthink please. You can always go to a psychologist ❤️
I think you did a great job! Love the painting style. This piece is so fresh and so different and who doesn’t like clowns. Really does remind me of the Norman Rockwell era 😍 makes me want to paint. Hope you sell this piece in some way!
there are people out there that don't like clowns, but I'm determined to change their minds! 😆😘
Thank you for sharing this. It's nice to see your process, and hear your story.
I’m definitely in love with your sketchbook!😻😻😻
I love this so so much! Reminds me of my daughters!
aw that's so sweet!☺️
Amazing piece! I think Prints Will be sold out like crazy! Like your portret study’s. Because this style is 👌🏽😍🤩
